Sephiroth is one of the most well known characters in the Final Fantasy universe, serving as the main antagonist in Final Fantasy 7.
But there is so much to his story, from his unconventional birth, being a celebrated hero, becoming the ultimate evil in the world of Final Fantasy 7 and fading away following his second defeat to Cloud Strife.

Sephirot is pretty much immortal, this was implied in Advent Children, and now it was confirmed, he will live in the livestream forever, and he can use it to even go back in time...every time they kill him, he comes back stronger .
@@Jose-se9pu I have a theory... Aerith dies in the original... to save the planet... Now... Cloud needs to die.... To Kill Sephiroth.... Sometimes... the only way to defeat the darkness... is to let it consume you and not the ones you cherish. Aerith inside the life stream could save the planet... but we need Cloud in there to undo, counter, actually clean the life stream, From Jenova.
Sephiroth, while the *actionable* villain... Has been the Pawn of Jenova... Cloud... is the only one to have been shown to be able to defeat Jenova... The life stream needs him to finally recover from the impact of Jenova ages ago.... everything since that moment... has just been the build up, and we never actually killed, destroyed, or eliminated the *actual* source of the problem... "Jenova". It also works as in Cloud, isn't really the best in the physical world, he *always* needed the help of his friends... but in the lifestream, in the metaphysical realm when Sephiroth (Jenova) tried to take him over... he *literally* could not lose. That's been the *point* of Cloud's life... to fight Sephiroth (Jenova)... not in the physical realm, but the lifestream, but he needed *HIS* life's *memories* and experiences to take over into the stream to win.
If that... is where they go with by the whole "whispers" and "changing their fate/destiny" .... I'm okay with that being the story change. But what *EVER* they do.... Sephiroth.... had better *STAY* the villain.... no redemption story for him, no reconciliation with Aerith as both being the last of their kinds, different kinds, ancient enemies to be specific, no reverting back to them being Bro/Sis or ex-lovers like the SUPER og storylines had it, before "jenova" was even an idea. I'm not okay with changing that much.

Aerith = Feminine Holy Earthen Incarnate
Cloud = Masculine Holy Earthen Incarnate
They have ALL lived, and ALL have died... except Cloud.... Time to "bring balance back to the force"
And as long as those key facts... *DO NOT CHANGE* ..... I'm... skeptical... but hopeful. And no... *NOT EVERYONE* should survive, *Loss* is an important and *UNAVOIDABLE* consequence of life... so no "Disney Perfect Happily Ever Afters" either.... lol.

Considering Nibelheim's remoteness, I like to envision that both Cloud and Tifa had country accents before moving to the big city, lol. I remember reading a story where Cloud's mother always pronounced his name more like "Clow", XD!

I really think Sephiroth was just lonely, and it drove him mad. Think about it. He grew up in a lab, treated as a weapon, not a child. Then growing up the strongest in the world, with no equal. No one can understand what your going through. Then, after years of this, you see your "mothers" Name on a door. You have family after all, and they have her captive, using her powers. You feel betrayed by those closest to you. They kept you from having a mother, a family, perhaps a life you choose. It's enough to make anyone go mad.
A lot of times in these games and shows, I like the villains, because most of them are justified in how they feel. Maybe their actions... Not so much.

I find it fascinating that in VIIR, the dialogue seems to imply that Sephiroth and Aerith both recall the events of the original, and each hopes to tweak the results

That's one of the theories based on the events of advent children. The theory is they're both traveling back and informing the past self of what is happening. Sethy to succeed where he failed and Areith to help stop him. One of the theories is FF7R isn't a remake but a sequel in part 2 where they change to course of history. I'm down with that.
I agree as well. Additionally, I think it wrong to not mention Aerith at all in this origin story as they are both so connected to each other as opposing forces in the life stream. His popularity/infamy was also in part by the fact that he killed her, a major character. The remake does well to show that as they both seem to be the ones who remember, with Sephiroth trying again to destroy the world and Aerith again trying to protect it.

@@spazzmaticus9086in reality it is both, without Hojo's actions and decision to raise Sephiroth as nothing more than a machine of a man meant only for destruction, he would not have gone the way of Jenova, but without Jenova Sephiroth would not have been capable of many of the actions he pulled off. both integrally were the thing that pulled and severed the few strings holding the Silver Soldier together, and inevitably birthed the one winged angel

I like seeing the human side of Sephiroth prior to the events of VII. I like the idea of seeing him as a hero and I feel like that made me enjoy Crisis Core all the more.

I don't. It softened his character and made him more of a sympathetic villain. This did not work with the way he was portrayed in original PS1 game. Which is the definitive version of the story whether compilation fans like it or not.

@@ericrhodes5174 FF7 takes place after Sephiroth partially dies and resides at Northern Crater, all through the amnesiac mind of Cloud Strife. We didn't know much about his past at Shinra, or birth prior to that. So Crisis Core "softening" his established character makes no sense. It filled in the many gaps about his predestined life and downward spiral. He still became very much a true villain, the ultimate consequence of Shinra's reckless greed with power and human experimentation.
Despite Sephiroth's atrocities, I still believe that the ultimate villains of this entire story are the alien Jenova, and Shinra Corporation. Jenova ravaged the planet and committed the Cetra genocide, and then Shinra Corporation excavated "her" to harness her genetic powers, no matter how dangerous or immoral.

He'd probably dedicate his life fighting against Shinra, because after all, deep down he sided with his friends. He did not want to kill Genesis, hence why he made Zack take missions for him.
I like the idea of Sephiroth settling down at Cosmo Canyon. :3 Given that Sephiroth would want to lay low (lest he be hunted down by the Turks), he'd settle for a quiet life and learn more about the universe under Bugenhagen's guidance. In-game FF7 dialogue, as well as Sephiroth's habit of locking himself away to read or obtain information, all points to him being a man seeking knowledge.

I'm fairly sure Sephiroth was deeply affected by the whole Crisis Core ordeal. There is a line that Angeal says to Sephiroth after he momentarily returns, "Sephiroth, have you lost weight?", to which he responds, "Hmph.". This implies Sephiroth isn't eating as he used to due to depression/anxiety.
So yeah, I believe Sephiroth was in a lot of pain, but he didn't let anyone know it.

He's not just famous within the Final Fantasy franchise, he's a famous villain outside of it as well. When the question is asked, who is one of the best villains, Sephiroth's name always comes up. Regardless of franchise, he is recognizable throughout the gaming universe.

The thing I've realized about the game is that Hojo is the only character who seems like he is a true villain--he's constantly doing the typically cruel, bad-guy actions. Sephiroth, meanwhile, is actually a victim of Hojo's impulses. He's not a bad guy in the beginning--he's actually a very intriguing, thoughtful person who seems like a good guy.

I agree completely. And I think that's another facet of Sephiroth's madness is the fact that humanity only seems to want power because of their greed so he wanted to rule it a different way. A part of me wishes he never turned bad because I really liked seeing him in CC

“I will never be a memory” is such a fantastic final line for Sephiroth. It allows the feel of his ever looming presence to stay alive for potentially as long as the series lasts.
I guess the fact that Sephiroth made a return years later after the events in ff7, its not so far fetched that in the remake he was able to have knowledge of the future and hes trying to change it, or so it seems. A villain that gets killed multiple times, seemingly cant die, and is able to alter history, badass.

I know they should have made one while they working on the new FF7. I remember back in the days I had a gameshark for my PS, and used cheat codes to play as Sephiorth. Even though my game would crash after the 3rd battle, it was a good feeling semi-controling him.

Every time someone brings up Sephiroth’s back story it annoys me because of Lucretia. She sacrificed her son for the sake of science and barely did anything to solve the problems that came with it, instead locking herself away in crystal. I know she helped Vincent but still…
I can understand what you mean, but I'd be inclined to think that Lucretia didn't want to give Sephiroth away to Shinra. She was forced to by Hojo. From the story in Dirge it definitely looks like Shinra stole Sephiroth away from Lucretia.

Riddle me this. Once Sephiroth was thrown into the lifestream by Cloud and absorbed its knowledge, he should have realized that Jenova was not his mother, Lucrecia is. Why did he go on believing that Jevona was his mother?
Jayjs20 in a way she was seing as she is the one who made him what he is (via the whole jenova cells thing). Sephiroth would probably view lucrecia as just a vessel for his birth, going off his general mental state.
Jenoa cells took over the humans cells so Jenova is the cell mother and lucrecia just the vessel. He didn't know anything about her and I guess he didn't care when he entered the lifestream.
Defy 'mother' - You see Sephiroth is a human-alien hybrid, also that alien side is someway stronger, ofc it make no sense in Compilation games but Sephiroth character was ment to represent PTSD. We saw that a bit in Kefka in FF6 but only a bit, while in FF7 ment to show this even more. You are a gamer was ment to see how Sephiroth is falling down into madness, cuting off of his own humanity into conviction that he is someone more then just a human. Ofc he whole his life felt that way but couldn't tell why.
He probably did find out at some point. The thing is he just doesn't care! Jenova is the one who got into his head and Lucrecia's just some woman who made him what he is and then abandoned him for all he knows and honestly he has every right to believe that. He's waaaay past caring about having a 'mother', he only cares about fulfilling Jenova's legacy.
This is why I hate theory's about Sephiroth turning good if he 'found out' who his biological mother is. Like no, he will most likely cut her into exactly 56 thousand pieces if he comes across her.

The best ff character, I liked him best in CC, I just wish there's more backstory about him, his transition from hero to a villain was tragic, the mysteries aura around him makes him interesting. While he is the strongest being physically but in the inside he was truly non other than human being before the Nibelheim incident and just the way he question things makes you want to know what his inner monologue is going through.
The reason Sephiroth is by far the best FF villain for me is because he is the only one I've genuinely feared. You spend the whole game pursuing him and never quite encountering him until the very final Climatic boss fight. In several other FF games you fight the villains multiple times and sometimes at very low levels. It makes them less intimidating I think. During the 'Cloud's Past' flashback you get a brief window to control Sephiroth in battle and he has end game stats and spells. Cloud (Zack) is dying with every hit and missing with every attack and Sephiroth dodges and one-hit KO's effortlessly. Before you know it you're back controlling your party and they all suck Ha! Before the story of this game even started, years ago, Sephiroth is 10x more powerful than your party who are currently bread and Breakfasting in Kalm lol! Then you run through the swamp dodging the giant Midgardsomr fearing for your life, only to find it on the other side effortlessly impaled on a tree! 'Yeah Sephiroth did that'. The fact that you see Sephiroth as a badass soldier, a God and then finally a cancer like disease in Cloud's head is another reason why he is so frightening, he is a threat on every level. Combine all this with an incredible, iconic character design and he is the best FF villain for me. I was really worried with Crisis Core because I thought seeing him before his fall from grace would destroy his character a little, but I think it's done really well. It's nice seeing him as hero very briefly because it makes his villainous self so much more of a fall and frightening, there is absolutely nothing left of a hero in FF7, he is just pure evil.
Yes I've loved him since my childhood, but I was UTTERLY disapointed that he's by far the easiest final boss in any final fantasy game. So I hope they will fix it in the remake, because back in FF7 he was so damn easy to beat that I was really traumatized! Square please make Sephiroth harder this time!
There were such intelligent connotations in the portrayal of this. Like certain groups in real life, the poster boy isnt the real enemy.
Sephiroth is controlled by jenova. Jenova is the real threat to the planet as evidenced by the cetra narrative. Everybody is talking about sephiroth and we just take jenova as an extra.
When aerith is killed, jenova is talking to both of them when we think sephiroth is calling cloud a puppet. Edit: jenova finishes sephiroths sentence, as if she was making him speak and finished the sentance for him

Sephiroth learning that he was a monster, that his life had been a lie, and his "mother" was an extremely powerful alien goddess, he probably suffered a psychotic break and simply never recovered. That is what made him decide he needed to take over the world.

If Square Enix can get their shit together. At the speed things are going the PS4 will be obsolete by the time the remake is released.
And so they will have to remake the remake again to fit a new console and 10+ years later we MIGHT see ff7 remake... That seems to be their standard these days...

@@theobscured_one square has always had a bad track record for releasing games on its designated launch I dont mind simply because that means the game will actually be good also I see a lot of people that are unhappy it's in 3 different parts but I will defend it because we have no idea how long until part 2 will be released so money shouldnt be a issue also because back when the original was released it was okay to bring out all of it on separate copys the original was great but I think they added a lot more so releasing all the parts at once would make it take a lot longer to be released so I understand.

The die hard OGs will know the REAL antagonists of the FFVII story is Shinra. Its ultimately them to blame for Sephiroth, genesis, Angeal etc. (although u can’t blame them for sephi going all psycho when he relates with Jenova as his mother xd)

I think it's difficult to know for sure. I would counter though, by saying that when Shinra decided to eliminate Genesis and Angeal, they don't trust Zack because he's being affected by his emotions. Sephiroth then reveals that he's been entrusted with the task and Zack questions it by saying "to kill them?" and Sephiroth gains a wry smile. ~Darryl
I think Darryl did the right thing and didn’t get more into the trio’s friendship. Because on the surface, they seemed like pretty good friends but if you look at it more thoroughly, that wasn’t the case. Angeal cared blindly about Genesis and never receiving anything in return (dumbapple story), Genesis only cared about himself and just wanted Sephiroth to acknowledge him and since that didn’t happen, he just forced some sort of rivalry on Sephiroth even he’s clearly not interested in it. And finally, there’s Sephiroth, who, is clear I think, appreciated Angeal more. He even responded “I wonder.” to Zack’s question, “You guys were pretty tight, huh?”

Sephiroth truly is a tragic character. He was weak of the heart and mind, taken advantage of with his childhood completely stripped away. Being raised as a weapon for his entire life. It drove him to straight insanity and jenovas influence made him fully crack. I love him so much as a character. Square managed to make a supernatural almost godlike being seem extremely human at times

So Lucrecia begin to experience visions of the future while impregnated with Sephiroth, I assume due to the Jenova cells now within her womb. Maybe remake Sephiroth can also see the future and that's why he's trying to change things.

I think Crisis Core gets too much credit for showing Sephiroth's complexity. The original FF7 was rich with clues regarding Sephiroth's complex nature, yet required gamers to pay attention and piece together the pieces themselves. For instance, the information Sephiroth shares in FF7 during the Nibel mountain flashbacks reveals that his relationship with Aerith's father (Dr. Gast) was much more than he let on.
Piecing together the pieces from FF7's dialogue and chain of events, we learn Sephiroth once hosted a romantic view of the world as a child, referring to materia as 'magic'. Hojo criticized him for it. However, that criticism didn't come outta nowhere. Dr. Gast also held a similar romantic view of the universe. Considering how much Sephiroth admired the man and still mourned over his loss even in his adult years, we can conclude that Gast served as a paternal figure to a child-Sephiroth. It was Dr. Gast who influenced Sephiroth's view of the universe, which, ironically, Sephiroth still shares since his dream is to build his own utopia somewhere within those stars. Hojo's overreaction, then, makes sense within this context. Not only does he hate that Sephiroth regards Gast as the smarter one, but he's bonded with him as well. Hojo's criticism, then, comes from a place of resentment and jealously.
It's things like this that I loved discovering in FF7 and connected me to Sephiroth. His character is shrouded in mystery, yet, FF7 provided a shit-ton of clues that point to his complex nature. He's a tragic and flawed man looking to the stars as a means of ignoring his sadness. Cloud addresses this 'sadness' in the original FF7 game too. During their confrontation, Sephiroth goes out of his way to deny he is 'sad' and, instead, focuses on his God-like mission. Yet, this sadness is obviously there since, in Dissidia,, the Warrior of Light notes the 'sadness in those 'winter eyes.'

Nice video. I think you undersold Sephiroth's involvement throughout FF7 though. While it's true that the Sephiroth that we see through most of the game is Jenova. It's also true that Jenova was completely under Sephiroth's control.
Even though it's pretty obvious, until listening to the story told like this, I never really considered the fact that had Sephiroth not taken that last mission, he likely would have just lived out the rest of his days as a retired hero, or who knows, he may have even stood up and fought against Shinra at some point seeing as how he was already getting tired of their shit. I can't really recall any other RPG villain whose villainy was so tenuous.

One of my favorite things about Sephiroth is that before he goes nuts, he's depicted as being right-handed, and then afterwards left-handed. It's not always kept up with outside of the original game, but still one of my favorite details. Also you can see that his "clones" or "remnants" Kadaj, Yazoo, and Loz are all also left-handed
I think he was always meant to be left-handed.
I think his biggest issue is that he didn't ever feel familial belonging. Growing up without a mother figure and a father figure can spring up a lot of issues, so as soon as he found belonging in Jenova, he clung onto it.
Man, what a well made video. The story is so insane, I always forget bits and pieces and this just reminded me of quite a few different aspects. The storyline as a whole is just unrivaled, in my opinion. Keep up the good work my dude.
You ever think they'll follow up on the cliffhanger at the end of Dirge of Cerberus? Genesis was awakened by the planet to deal with something even more dangerous than Jenova or Deepground, what could it possibly be?
I always had hope that they would, but with the Final Fantasy VII Remake essentially rewriting the lore from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, I don't think it's something they will explore any more, sadly. ~Darryl
Blair Dale Maybe they will... but it depends on how good the Remake does when it’ll be released. There’s a chance SE will dedicate an entire game or something of the sort, on Genesis and even Cloud! We did see a glimpse of future Edge in the Renake trailer and there’s also LOVELESS. Check Act IV and V. These two acts speak of “sacrifice at world’s end”. Maybe Genesis will sacrifice himself as the Planet’s protector in the end...

No problem, I see a lot of comments of characters being "the goat" it's pretty used a lot on the internet. He doesn't look like a goat in the least, I never seen someone comment or think of his design like that. He pretty much gets fangirls swooning over his pretty face, hair and his huge eyelashes, like most of the FF male characters. He looked fine to me in the Crisis Core CG scenes.
Oh don't get me wrong, huge fangirl here and he looks good throughout most of the game oddly enough but I prefer him in Advent Children than to the Crisis Core Sephiroth vs Angeal and Genesis scene. I have seen other comments that he looks a bit odd and someone even said he looks a bit like a pale Alpaca. That one wasn't me, lol. Not raging about it though, just not my favourite depiction of him.
Sephiroth was Frankenstein's monster, the true monster was Dr. Hojo who created the monster.
Sephiroth possesses the uncanny ability to have Square Enix treat it like a big deal whenever he shows up to fight Cloud in a game...even though he ALWAYS shows up to fight Cloud in a game and the fight always ends inconclusively.

I dont consider Genesis or Sephiroth the cause of all the main problems in FFVII. The cause of it all is Shinra IMHO. The turned evil because of Shinra's intention after all.

Watching this in December 2020 after the Smash Bros DLC announcement to learn more about the guy. I've only played the first three or so hours of FF7 and seen Advent Children a few times. All I remember about Seph prior to his Smash reveal is that he slaughters everyone in Nibelheim and how awesome of a song One-Winged Angel is.

When he killed Aerith, It was quite the moment for me I had devoted so much time in the her and cloud in the beginning she was almost at max. Not only was it a slap in the face but a very sad scene indeed when I finally confronted Sephiroth, I took him down in less than 5 minutes before he even had a chance to cast his best spell. Seen her face at the very end gave me Goosebumps and brought tears to my eyes. It was quite an emotional rollercoaster in the movie Advent Children as well see in her at the end with Zach.

So basically, there was all this intrigue revolving around Sephiroth, his discovery of his origins, his conflict with Zack, and all of a sudden, there's this pretty random guy who comes into his life, beats him once, and becomes the primary focus of Sephiroth's existence to the point that he even stalks him into other games just to make his life a living hell every chance he gets.
That was a great video. Please make more videos in the same way. I, personally, would like to see a video about Kefka.
One more thing, it would be nice if you'll add fanart/videos rather than just screenshots of the game, just to make the visual aspect of the video more interesting.

I still prefer to think that Sephiroth is somehow Vincent and Lucrecia's child. Maybe they were having an affair or something... That would explain why Vincent was against the experiment and also why Sephiroth kinda look like Vincent (at least, much more than Hojo!).
Yeah, the similarities between Vincent and Sephiroth, both on a physical level and otherwise, are way too many to be coincidental.

szy szy jenova shares similarity with the first ff movie (spirits within). She is a surviving relic of a dead planet using the rock as an arc. And like spirits within she poses an apocalyptic threat.
Yeah I've always wanted to know a lot more about Lavos/Jenova's origins. They're both these hugely powerful aliens, I'd like to know what made them and what all exactly they were doing before coming to the planet.

Look at the stories of FF3 and FF5... as well as FF7... they all seemingly are different, but when taking a step back, connect extraordinarily well at very simple parts of the games
(ancients, meteors, disappearing masses of land, cracks in the ocean, abilities, the list goes on.).
It isnt as powerful as we think as Sephiroth was able to overtake it's will.
