This government would rather import "tradesmen"..(and I use that term VERY loosely) rather than train up our domestic workforce through apprenticeships, like they use to do.
I genuinely wish all inspectors were like you - highly knowlegeable of what to look for, and pointing out actual defects and problems that will have an impact on the integrity of the house. Sadly, a lot of inspectors only got the job because they failed trade school, and as a result only know how to nit-pick on absolutely irrelevant BS. Doubt this tradie is the actual contractor - more than likely either an apprentice or just someone working for him - but here's to hoping he learns from his mistakes.
In QLD, they don't even need insurance to operate. So when you get a dodgy inspector who say passes a leaking roof. They just claim bankruptcy, and your screwed either way. So it doesn't matter how competent they are.

My son is literally getting his bathroom done next week, we’ve done the demolition and the reason it has to be redone is because the shower leaked. These are the videos you want to see if you are building as it means you know what to look out for, you don't want Rainbow and Unicorn videos and just trust the "professionals" building you'r home to be honest and know what they are going
Nice Job, having been an exterior weather proofer if the rainy pacific northwest United States, I can't express the importance of doing things right, and understanding how water interacts with surfaces, making sure you have the correct overlap, no backwards lap, taping vertical laps, always allowing water to escape out the bottom of things, prepping surfaces before liquid flashing and not leaving pinholes, and making sure that things like window headers always have a drip edge/flashing so that water running down a wall is not able to wrap up underneath your window header, and much more. When you see things like sideways driven rain find its way through a pinhole in the caulking around an inset window, and leave a huge puddle under the window on the inside of a building, you gain a lot more respect for waters abilities and potential to cause damage, and in turn you begin to understand just how absolutely THOROUGH you need to be when waterproofing/weatherproofing.
Thanks for not criticizing the Waterproofing contractor and actually showing him the correct way to do the waterproofing that actually meets the Australian Building Standards.
Thanks for keeping your language respectful. So many channel have non stop blasphemous language but you keep it professional so we can all enjoy your work
How many other bathrooms has the guy done incorrectly though. Im glad youve pulled him up on it. There are more people that will suffer down the track due to non compliant short cuts.
Unfortunately, you still need people that WANT to learn. Clearly most simply don't because this is the information age and if they wanted to, they could.
OMG, I wish you were in NSW and could show the company who did our waterproofing how shoddy they are. The waterproofing failed and leaked to our downstairs roof. Angles are not compliant, substrate was not adequate. It has ruined our bathroom floor which needs to be replaced. They denied liability. So glad these people had you to intervene to prevent this happening to them.
That's great communication and pointing out what the issues are with some resolve. I use similar compounds although I'm not a great fan of the adhesion as its not great when things are good, will b be interesting to see how these things pan out over the years.
Unfortunately that happens far too often, so many people don’t care about their quality just want to clip the ticket, good on you for pulling him up on the poor workmanship
This is why waterproofers need to take their job seriously and not slap it on. Take pride. Treat the house as its your own, your work should be 110% spot on. Even if it takes you longer to do the job, its worth it. Take it from me, Im married to a waterproofer so I know how waterproofing should be.
This is how instruction should be given he is teaching the young man what needs to be done not saying ur a moron or a hack he explains the problem and the solution teaching the young man how
I wish you new you a few years ago bro. The bullshit I have had to go through with my new townhouse. It’s unbelievable the lack of quality workmanship in the trades now.
So you remove the work before its finished and its their fault? What happens if you remove the caulk to inspect and find it is to code then who is responsible for fixing the damage you caused??
The QLD gov trains waterproofers in QLD. They don’t get refresher courses, check ups or updated standards. It causes so much damage and unnecessary cost. Of all the trades waterproofing needs the most attention.
Let the lesson commence... Reminds me with junior developers and showing them how many ways their code is insecure and not fault tolerant... Reminds me of the old saying, if builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilisation.. Although, from what your finding, Australia might be the first to go....
This inspector makes everyone a winner. The customer gets a good job done properly, the contractor learns how to do it right and becomes a good tradesman. The builders get a good reputation. No one likes their work criticised, but it's the only way to stop mistakes in the future.
If you’re a licensed tradesman the last person you will take advice of is a know it all inspector who ain’t a tiler or waterproofer. Only a builder or client gets to approach a contractor and tell him to rectify.
Dont wear your shoes on a waterproofed surface, you should be in your socks to ensure you dont have any sharp objects stuck in your boots, because if u do, all your doing is putting pin holes all through the waterproofing
Very good inspector! I argue with my clients and helpers constantly over these issues. So many people in construction are ignorant/lazy when it comes to this. I’m getting ready to part ways with a helper turned “partner” (in HIS mind) for issues just like these. We painted every stick of a cabinet in Hawaii at the beach to protect the wood. My guy had to cut some trim pieces and unlike me, didn’t prime and paint the newly exposed ends. All that effort to do a good job thrown in the trash. Really good video, and especially the pointing out how he’s saving the contractor from some extreme headaches down the road. Kudos to the contractor for being humble enough to accept the advice in a mature manner.
Well done, you found the problems and explained like a professional, which you are but well done on the inspection without malice...And you explained how and why... Well done dude.!!
Love this stuff, Forgive me if I get it wrong but Zahir damn you for doing a genuinely bloody good job😂 Just enquired with site inspections for an expert witness report and unfortunately they aren't taking new clients until end 2024. It's not urgent but I wanted ammo before engaging my builder.
That the guys had to be shown how to do the job he was doing is baffling. I hope he appreciated the gentle tutoring he had the privilege of receiving and lifts his game.
I get the impression theyre totally aware of the non compliant defects theyre leaving at sights. In order to fulfil their work to a compliant level it must just be an extrapain in the arse or cost them a lot more in labour. So they leave it until theyre caught and face zero consequences as per usual
Seriously 😳 why is someone who clearly has no idea about the job they’re doing working on that house, especially waterproofing, it’s a super critical job that needs to be done correctly the first time, how many other houses has he done and who is signing off on the waterproofing prior to tiling 🤦♂️ there is NO excuse for this level of incompetence
What surprises me is good builders are absolutely pedantic about waterproofing. I've had two bathrooms done and both builders wanted to employ high quality water proofers so they wouldn't have issues down the track. Builders don't want to have replace bathrooms due to dodgy water proofing. Im shocked builders aren't supervising the waterproofing. In my two jobs both builders checked the water proofing thoroughly. Similarly although I didn't know what to look for the water proofing looked really well done. Its not rocket science you need to form a tub like structure with the waterproofing so the water has nowhere to go.
Mate did my bathroom 7 years ago, have had some leak from the shower area. The VJ in the other rooms opposite to the shower is trashed and only started to notice it through a mark on the wall. But very apparent it’s been happening for a long time. Basically found that the waterproofing wasn’t done very well and now I’m caught thousands to fix. I’m gutted Young family of 5 kids, not sure how to pay for it. Thank you for double checking work like this, I’d hate to think people like me will get caught out 10 years later. It’s just not fair. thank you 🙏
imagine paying out the ass to have your house built and this was the quality you were going to get. Glad there are people out there educating and getting this stuff squashed.
I have to say it, waterproofing under the screed is the worst way to go about it, it creates trapped/pooling water in wet the areas. The guy says it himself, 'you are making a mini swimming pool'. The only way this makes sense to me, is its a faster way to get the job done. Australia should change its standards here.
Haha, hard to learn, you made me laugh, i sell a range of polyurethane and epoxy waterproofing products, it certainly is not hard to learn. This all laziness
When I first saw Mike Holmes using Schluter systems I had serious doubts. (Bathroom contractor). We signed up for installation classes (teacher encouraged a lot of questions) and learned first hand about all the hype. Been doing this system for almost 15 years so far with zero failures.
This is standard waterproofing you will see on Government construction sites in Sydney, water proofers are out of control, even when they do have half a clue it is so messy and thick where the gyprock meets the substrate that you cant install tiles or coved vinyl anyway.
Well nobody wants to do this kind of work as it is. And the way it’s structured in an optimal environment you have an experienced tradesman paired with a fresh guy who knows little or nothing about construction. It works if the experienced person is given the time and has the drive to pass along what they know to the new individual, and you hope that it’s good information. Some areas require schooling and some don’t but more consistent regulation would probably be beneficial to cut down on hack jobs.
The guy listened to what you said and didn't start back talking. The amount of times I've tried to point out problems with my sub-contractors work and they've just told me "it'll be fine" annoys me so much. Issues like instaling built in toilet frames out of plumb, drains in the wrong places etc. that I've had to go and fix myself because they won't. hard to even find anyone to do the jobs these days. let alone do it right
Ar least there was some attempt. I pulled a vanity out in my bathroom.. no waterproofing in sight! 😮 MDF skirting on one wall too (already rotting). ☹️ I waterproofed what I could before installing a new vanity, then adding tile skirting. Epoxy grouted the entire floor and siliconed all the corners. See how long it lasts…🤞🤞

This is gonna sound weird, but inspectors like you would make me wanna get into this business. Like as much as I’d love to pretend to be perfect, mistakes get made, and having someone calmly and professionally explain them like this is great.
And you did all this for what looks like not even actual mistakes, a sloppy spot or two is a mistake, but when the sloppiness is a consistent theme … yeah.
I hope he took the criticism to heart and learns from this.
The waterproofer responding with a tired “yeah” and “right” and “yep” for every major defect is… concerning.
yeah he couldn't give a shit.
@@DanTuber agreed Mate. When my boss educated me, I took written notes, photos/videos on my phone. Those responses are what I saw when he spoke to some other apprentices who just 'punched the clock'...
They are probably the only words he knows.
That's all of the English language that he knows .
Zero f*cks. He doesn't care.
Good job mate probably and hopefully saved a lot of other jobs down that track. Love how you took the time to explain how to do it. Some people never get that chance. And for 99 percent of tradies they never see that job after it’s been finished. This explains what can happen years later and why it’s important to fix it now. Hopefully the knowledge is passed on. Sad for the bloke but this it all part of becoming great at what you do. Learning and making mistakes
NO THE MISTAKE IS THE PROFIT WITHOUT ACCOUNTABILITY AFTER XXX YEARS. STUPID HOME PURCHASESERS WHO THINK THAT REGULATORS WON'T BE BOUGHT.....AS SCOTUS' MAY FISH-FRYING EXEMPLIFIES.
What a legend of an inspector. Respectfully explaining the facts while providing solutions, literally helping this contractor grow as a tradesman.
Hopefully this lad took it all on board without letting his pride get in the way of helpful well placed criticism.
Are inspections like this required for the construction of most (if not all) dwellings in Australia? It's a bit frightening to live in a building which was put together by someone who's not even aware of the minimum standards..
Thank you for your work to ensure the homes we sink our hard earned money into are safe and compliant. You've earned a sub from me.
Wow you certainly made that guy's day.
I really hope he took what you said seriously and repaired his work. And let's hope he takes this knowledge onto his next job.
Any chance of a follow-up.
✌️ Peace.
Guarantee he doesn't fix it and learns nothing.
@niallms83 no shit, what's with all the dumb fucking comments making out that tradie will care? Seriously are people that useless at reading people? No wonder the system is falling apart...
I bet he didn't understand a word the inspector said and is probably being sued as we speak
Not another foreign "tradesman" totally forking up another new build. That's impossible!!! 😂😂😂
I'm surprised he can string 2 words together in English.
This government would rather import "tradesmen"..(and I use that term VERY loosely) rather than train up our domestic workforce through apprenticeships, like they use to do.
He is listening but I don’t think anything has gotten through.
Seems more like he is waiting for him to leave and has zero plans to do anything.
This is how you teach someone.
Excellent job.
Explaining code to a waterproofer is like explaining cricket to a goose.
that clown was just some kid there's some really good tradies out there
Do you really believe there are 0 good tradies out there?

Meanwhile it costs hundreds and thousands of dollars just to get access to the standards to know what the even code is.
Really respect the professionalism and not putting the man down.
Everyone makes mistakes
Back when i was an electrician i made a mistake and immediately tried fixing it and apologized and even offered to pay for it my boss put me down infront of a whole 10 man team and the clients that kept saying its ok and that mistakes happen. But my boss back then kept ripping into me. Even after id paid and fixed the issue. I quit the same day.
My son is literally getting his bathroom done next week, we’ve done the demolition and the reason it has to be redone is because the shower leaked. The bathroom was there when they bought the house 6 months ago and the bathroom was only a couple of years old but someone didn’t do the wet seal properly. Thanks so much. Cheers Stuart, Canberra.
It seems like he doesn't understand what you are trying to explain. Thankfully there are people like yourself trying to keep them accountable. God bless.
Thought they'd teach this in the first week of trade school. Can you please post a video of a job done well? As someone building a house all these bad builds scare me.
Trade school?!?! This guys come in from India on a "student" visa, never attend classes and all work cash in hand as labourers. They arent trade skilled.
These are the videos you want to see if you are building as it means you know what to look out for, you don't want Rainbow and Unicorn videos and just trust the "professionals" building you'r home to be honest and know what they are going
@@J-P88 I've watched them all. I feel like I've seen every bad example but never a good one.
Good luck, anyone that has a house built even by a pro builders has rocks in their head
@@SkinnyCow.*These guys
Now I’m interested where trades get their training from and what standards they need to achieve to work on a customers house
You need to teach people to be like you. Like a course or something. This industry needs more people like you. Well done and keep it up!
So many channel have non stop blasphemous language but you keep it professional so we can all enjoy your work
The was the best video. Training the trades on how best to apply the waterproof. Keep it up. We need more how to videos to be compliant .
Youre a good teacher site inspector. The guys pride was probably shattered but it was necessary for the job
PLEASE post a job that you would deem is at least 95% work excellence. I'd like to see what meets the standard or exceeds them.
Must be a rare job.
yes, and a shout out to anyone that is doing a good job, as I know you can't name and shame the bad ones.

Why can’t they be named?
You might as well ask him for a video of Big Foot, my guy.
@@nanashivii9237 lol
Very kind for taking the time to instruct him about the right way.
Because of you mate, whenever I’m out and about I’m looking for defects and non compliance work on houses haha keep up the good work
I used to do it on cars (paint, panel gaps and shit). Because of this channel now im doing this shit on houses too.
🤣
@@Mr_jz_12 Hahaha 😂
How many other bathrooms has the guy done incorrectly though. Im glad youve pulled him up on it. There are more people that will suffer down the track due to non compliant short cuts.
When are you going to set up the Site Inspections Trade School?
Yes
Unfortunately, you still need people that WANT to learn. Clearly most simply don't because this is the information age and if they wanted to, they could.
@awakenotwoke1973 I envisage an elite trade school with graduates who will be in high demand.
@@tinaryan4023 That can only occur if the authorities start sanctioning the cowboys.
"You've installed this completely wrong, it needs to be ripped up"
"yeah, 100%, sweet. (inaudible)" xRepeat
Very polite in explaining the issues.
If everyone working in construction did the right thing there wouldn’t be the need for inspectors.
By the looks of what he found, it needed another coat of the waterproofing everywhere anyway.
everyone says how its done but you explain why its done that way it stick more and feels more constructive. you got good ppl skill right there
I don't think he has any questions...It's not likely when he has no idea.
Now you need to educate most of the roof plumbers!
Im looking forward to it, I’ll be sure to get that on body cam 😎
Well done, you found the problems and explained like a professional, which you are but well done on the inspection without malice...And you explained how and why... Well done dude.!!
Good job buddy. You took a moment where most men would yell or scream and turned it into a teaching moment.
But a big thank you to Millie at the office, she was more than helpful ❤
That the guys had to be shown how to do the job he was doing is baffling.
I hope he appreciated the gentle tutoring he had the privilege of receiving and lifts his game.
I get the impression theyre totally aware of the non compliant defects theyre leaving at sights. In order to fulfil their work to a compliant level it must just be an extrapain in the arse or cost them a lot more in labour. So they leave it until theyre caught and face zero consequences as per usual
Yeah but if done right properly it probably would only have taken an hour longer and saved thousands of dollars to the company and owner
Education and refreshing it every now and then is key. Something that guy obviously didn't have...
I’m gutted
Young family of 5 kids, not sure how to pay for it.
Thank you for double checking work like this, I’d hate to think people like me will get caught out 10 years later. It’s just not fair.
thank you 🙏
I wish site inspectors were all like you. I wonder how much you charge in comparison to the regular site inspectors we find on the internet.
His company will be closed by the time you get and home and they’ll never be able to get ahold of him again 😂😂😂
Impecable professionalism. If only we could have you inspecting all our homes in Australia.
imagine paying out the ass to have your house built and this was the quality you were going to get.
Its easy, once you know how to do it! But with the amount of waterproofing failures, it seems to be hard to learn. - Nice teaching in this video!
Haha, hard to learn, you made me laugh, i sell a range of polyurethane and epoxy waterproofing products, it certainly is not hard to learn.
This all laziness
All the mistakes were the same. That contractor did not know their business. Many contractors don't really know what they are doing unfortunately!
When I first saw Mike Holmes using Schluter systems I had serious doubts. (Bathroom contractor). We signed up for installation classes (teacher encouraged a lot of questions) and learned first hand about all the hype. Been doing this system for almost 15 years so far with zero failures.
How many bathrooms does that house have? Jesus looks like an open floor apartment block LOL
This is standard waterproofing you will see on Government construction sites in Sydney, water proofers are out of control, even when they do have half a clue it is so messy and thick where the gyprock meets the substrate that you cant install tiles or coved vinyl anyway.
Mate, your content is awesome. The editing is great and it's a very educational channel!
Trained and Licenced water proofer, i think not. Excellent explanation of points and corrective actions.
Do you think any of it sank in or he just didn't give a toss?
Why isn't the guy talking back and communicating?
The lack of supervision of trades is criminal.
MDF skirting on one wall too (already rotting). ☹️
I waterproofed what I could before installing a new vanity, then adding tile skirting. Epoxy grouted the entire floor and siliconed all the corners. See how long it lasts…🤞🤞
You are so professional - Its a shame everone else isn't
The guy clearly has no idea what he’s supposed to be doing.
Pretty sure the contractor is saying "ah fuck." Every 10 seconds
For F sake you helped him out big time and showed how to correct it instead of throwing him to the wolves. Good dude right there😎
I really hope when you show these guys they actually take in your abundance of knowledge , it would be challenging to have the "i know what im doing" attitude, when all your doing is giving advice.
I can only imagine that their is cheap apprentices that are not getting the help you give them as well , mind you that their is also different nationalities that have been taught a different way of trade with different compliances.
Im sure you know what i mean .
Just keep up the awesome work man , we all really appreciate it 👍
