I appreciate your professionalism, speaking to this man like a human and not putting him down, im sure he is embarrassed and hopefully is willing to fix his mistakes.
pretty difficult to "fix his mistakes" if he doesn't know how or what it takes to do his job.
@robsmith6087 if he doesn't know how fair call, but he could of had a bad employee do the work, or this guy could be the bad worker either way he has now been shown the right way to do it and has no excuses.
Stuff his feelings .
People work their guts out to own a property and something like this can financially ruin them
@@michael04111986 exactly . . this is what we get nowadays. Pussies running the show, and bugger the realities of hard earned dollars being stolen by these cock-heads !!!!!!!!!!!!! FFS
He just wants paid so he can get to the pub. This is a major annoyance.
You pointed out both WHAT was wrong, WHY it was wrong and the damages it might lead to, and HOW to fix it. Job well done, hopefully he takes all that information and improves his work in the future.
Unfortunately, if you don't know what your are doing in the first place, all the advice is meaningless and the shoddy work will be tiled over before you know it. It's my understanding that, in Victoria, there is no requirement for waterproofing to be inspected before tiling is done and there was no waterproofing licence requirement until maybe recently. .
Trust me he doesn’t care. He’s like “we will deal with it later in the future”
@@TankTheSpank yeah getting that feeling .. he just doesn't care.. it's just a job.. no pride in his work etc
When I did waterproofing, I would scrape surfaces, hammer in any nails that were proud, sweep and typically wipe the surface with a slightly damp sponge before I would start to ensure surface was clean and level for coating. I had a very experienced boss to teach me when doing my apprenticeship.
Just shows how important a good mentor and role model is.
It’s really just common sense- with or without a good mentor. Who puts any kind of proofing, glue or anything of the sort straight on top of construction waste. It’s either laziness or incompetence
@@ahj3225 people tend to emulate the behaviour of what they've been taught and those around them. If they had people around them not caring, then they tend to follow those standards, even if they know better.
Waterproofing isnt a recognised trade. You never did an apprenticeship in waterproofing haha
@@juicedupfreak I was doing a floor and wall tiling apprenticeship and waterproofing was one of the tasks I was taught as part of that. What is your trade or basis for comment?
this is priceless for this man. you tell him how to do his job perfectly! i bet he has no idea how much help you gave him.
A professional should not have to be educated about how to do his job properly. It's absurd.
Cause learning only happens once folks, remember that.
Welcome to day 1 of trade school! Now that you've been playing around with paying customers homes for a few weeks, it's time to learn how waterproofing works!
I mean fair enough, he was probably hired by some guy for the same wage as a Wendys fry cook, what do you expect? Anyone who knows how to do their job well, has created their own business already
@@jg7038 the issues comes down to whether this guy claimed he knew how to do this job. Or if the guy hiring him didn't care to check if he knew.
If he hired the guy and just expected him to do this without gecking if he knew how the it's in he guy who hired him. He could have literally just done what his guy did and told him in 5 minutes exactly how it needed doing.
But if the guy got hired because he said he could do it, and he's doing stuff like this then he doesn't really know what he's doing.
This is probably the only training that he has ever gotten…
@@pat8988 Honestly wouldn't be surprised. The few times I bothered with the construction industry, it was a mix between people who gave a damn like the inspector, and people who clearly gave zero damns and taught nothing while expecting you to just know everything.
It was incredibly frustrating.
You communicated the points while being professional. We need inspectors like you in the US. Clearly that contractor needs supervision.

Very good inspector! I argue with my clients and helpers constantly over these issues. So many people in construction are ignorant/lazy when it comes to this. I’m getting ready to part ways with a helper turned “partner” (in HIS mind) for issues just like these. We painted every stick of a cabinet in Hawaii at the beach to protect the wood. My guy had to cut some trim pieces and unlike me, didn’t prime and paint the newly exposed ends. All that effort to do a good job thrown in the trash. Really good video, and especially the pointing out how he’s saving the contractor from some extreme headaches down the road. Kudos to the contractor for being humble enough to accept the advice in a mature manner.
Let the lesson commence... Reminds me with junior developers and showing them how many ways their code is insecure and not fault tolerant... Reminds me of the old saying, if builders built buildings the way programmers wrote programs, then the first woodpecker that came along would destroy civilisation.. Although, from what your finding, Australia might be the first to go....
I wish site inspectors were all like you. I wonder how much you charge in comparison to the regular site inspectors we find on the internet.
HAHAHAHA , all that work is DEFECTIVE and Non compliant
Education and refreshing it every now and then is key. Something that guy obviously didn't have...
would be interested to see if he fixes the faults you pointed out, also you are such a gentleman the way you explained it to him your a good egg
Impecable professionalism. If only we could have you inspecting all our homes in Australia.
This is why waterproofers need to take their job seriously and not slap it on. Take pride. Treat the house as its your own, your work should be 110% spot on. Even if it takes you longer to do the job, its worth it.
Take it from me, Im married to a waterproofer so I know how waterproofing should be.
Atleast you spoke to him well. Even if he is a chancer and got into what he thought was an easy career
Very polite in explaining the issues.
I don't think he is the waterproofing licence holder - he is cheap labour, unfortunately poorly supervised.
Yep it should be the supervisor to review this guys work and help him learn, not to learn his trade from the building inspector.
@orza1 it's definitely a new kid who is barely learning his trade
I was in a rental property about 10 years ago and the bathrooms had to be redone. When the waterproofer, an older guy, came in we got to chatting. I got a sense that he had had enough of the game and was looking to retire but he told me that a lot of waterproofing is done poorly so that it fails and they can get more work when it needs to be redone. He wasn't joking.
What body cam is that man? That’s so smooth and good quality. Great work, awesome bit of education for everybody. It’s a shame they weren’t taught that in Trade school.
When are you going to set up the Site Inspections Trade School?
Yes

@awakenotwoke1973 I envisage an elite trade school with graduates who will be in high demand.
@@tinaryan4023 That can only occur if the authorities start sanctioning the cowboys.

A little bit of a tangent, but this whole style of creating a completely flashed, continuous waterproof membrane in the entire bathroom, every bath, is a new idea for me. In the US, that is usually applied to the shower stall only. From my travels in Spain, I noticed many residential baths where the entire floor was tiled and had a floor drain in the middle of the room. For accidental leaks, occasional spills, or ease of cleaning- I never found out. From my travels in Finland, I saw residential baths with entire shower rooms. Not stalls, the whole room tiled. No curtain, glass, or dividers of any kind. Just an adjustable-height shower head/ wand coming out of the wall and a central floor drain. For these two examples, I’m thinking that entire room waterproof floor membranes are more the norm outside the US. But I haven’t heard of that catching on here.
All the products are available here in the US though, off the shelves at Lowe’s. People just rarely think of this as on option.
I wish the builder did that in our home 24 years ago! We're now finding faults when we have to reno prior to sale! We needed someone like you to oversee our build! Job well done and the way you explained the problems!!👍🏻

Dont wear your shoes on a waterproofed surface, you should be in your socks to ensure you dont have any sharp objects stuck in your boots, because if u do, all your doing is putting pin holes all through the waterproofing
By the looks of what he found, it needed another coat of the waterproofing everywhere anyway.

Water proofers are the laziest Kent's I've seen, never once seen them prep a floor, paint that shit on the floors and get out is there motto. You pull the whole sheet up in one piece and they already know everything your telling them they just don't give an ef
Are inspections like this required for the construction of most (if not all) dwellings in Australia? It's a bit frightening to live in a building which was put together by someone who's not even aware of the minimum standards..
Thank you for your work to ensure the homes we sink our hard earned money into are safe and compliant. You've earned a sub from me.
Membrane will have to go up, over and down the other side to make it entirely integral. Whether you stop it on the horizontal like the contractor did or whether you stop it on the vertical, as it lies on the inner boundary it's only as good as the primer/ adhesion. For the supervisor, moving to the vertical face just changes the entry point for water.
Tradesman. Where. ?
He explained it calmly. I think I would have been fuming! Seems they don't know what they are doing
What surprises me is good builders are absolutely pedantic about waterproofing. I've had two bathrooms done and both builders wanted to employ high quality water proofers so they wouldn't have issues down the track. Builders don't want to have replace bathrooms due to dodgy water proofing. Im shocked builders aren't supervising the waterproofing. In my two jobs both builders checked the water proofing thoroughly. Similarly although I didn't know what to look for the water proofing looked really well done. Its not rocket science you need to form a tub like structure with the waterproofing so the water has nowhere to go.
As a superintendent, the minute I hear the phrase “leave it, it’s not our job” the relationship is over.
i like how you give him the benefit of a doubt and teach him how to do it properly, when in 99% of cases they know exactly what they need to do but are being lazy

I had a job to fix all the bodges a builder had done, one of those was an upstairs shower room, what a job that was, the tiles were bending outwards, the waterproofing (and I say that laughingly) was just peeling off, every single tile had to be removed, the waterproofing came off as a sheet, the tile adhesive could be scraped off, it was crumbling, fortunately the room hadn't been used. I was there 2 months fixing all the bodges it was epic.
This is gonna sound weird, but inspectors like you would make me wanna get into this business. Like as much as I’d love to pretend to be perfect, mistakes get made, and having someone calmly and professionally explain them like this is great.
And you did all this for what looks like not even actual mistakes, a sloppy spot or two is a mistake, but when the sloppiness is a consistent theme … yeah.

He's not going to fix it lol.
And other than all that , its a bloody good job 😂, nicely explained though, polite and professional
I genuinely wish all inspectors were like you - highly knowlegeable of what to look for, and pointing out actual defects and problems that will have an impact on the integrity of the house. Sadly, a lot of inspectors only got the job because they failed trade school, and as a result only know how to nit-pick on absolutely irrelevant BS.
Doubt this tradie is the actual contractor - more than likely either an apprentice or just someone working for him - but here's to hoping he learns from his mistakes.
In QLD, they don't even need insurance to operate. So when you get a dodgy inspector who say passes a leaking roof. They just claim bankruptcy, and your screwed either way. So it doesn't matter how competent they are.
That looks like a real pain. There are much easier ways to waterproof than spreading rubber all over the walls and floors. Haven't seen this in the states yet.
What a valuable lesson! Many would scream at him for something like that. Your patience and understanding is commendable.
he's not screaming at him because he's just the inspector. it's not his money, time, or material. the screaming most likely came when the dude had to call his boss and tell him the good news.
Never trust a tradie in track pants...
Fantastic to see a building inspection done the way they should be done, it was really good and professional the way you showed the water proofing guy the fault he needed to fix and why it needed to be done now rather that latter when there would be huge amounts of costs if it isn't fixed up now. I hope you never loose the passion for doing the right thing for your customers. God bless you
I have to say it, waterproofing under the screed is the worst way to go about it, it creates trapped/pooling water in wet the areas. The guy says it himself, 'you are making a mini swimming pool'.
The only way this makes sense to me, is its a faster way to get the job done.
Australia should change its standards here.

This is why we check
Scary that a "specialist waterproofer" is being schooled at basics.
Cleaning a surface to stick anything to it is about as basic as it gets. Everyone should know that.
This is simply bottom dollar getting the lazy quick job by someone who did a few hours of basic classes and is "qualified". Probably gets away with it by phoenixing companies every few years before his poor work becomes obvious.
Really need to start naming and shaming these people with a national register.
I don't think he understood a word. Water proofing is so important but I can't fathom how he has no idea. Surely the tiler and builder know

My son is literally getting his bathroom done next week, we’ve done the demolition and the reason it has to be redone is because the shower leaked. The bathroom was there when they bought the house 6 months ago and the bathroom was only a couple of years old but someone didn’t do the wet seal properly. Thanks so much. Cheers Stuart, Canberra.
These guys do this as a trade lmao.
Genuinly curious and don't want to sound insensitive, but was this guy trained in Australia? He doesn't seem to know how to do his job and he's been left unsupervised. If you weren't there, the owner would be in a world of trouble once that home is built. I'm guessing this is not uncommon as well. How do these guys get their trade licences and who is checking their work is up to standard? I look at some of the homes in other countries and the workmanship here is so bad, I'm almost considering moving somewhere else. We are a wealthy and educated country, but there seems to be a real lack of care across several trades and industries. People take no pride in their work and don't care if they ruin someones home. It's pretty disgusting tbh.
He had nooo idea what you are talking about

I assume the builder has hired a contractor with a trade license for waterproofing. If so then the licence should be revoked and further training before reissuing. Mind you I wonder about the training!!
