    Another interesting point I thought worth mentioning: The Kaldheim gods also don't have any kind of protection from removal such as indestructible or reshuffling when they die. I suspect this is partly for game balance reasons, but it's also a flavour win with Norse mythology in particular since those gods often went about the world and interacted with mortals, and they can die in the stories (and did, most obviously during Ragnarok).

    • @MagicArcanum
      @MagicArcanum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      Very true! They can become indestructible IF they get access to the Tyrite Sanctum, but otherwise they're just as vulnerable as anyone else.

    • @colintaylormays6714
      @colintaylormays6714 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Yeah! The gods of Norse Mythology had a great amount of mortality, which is why they were so great. Norse gods weren't like the greek gods, but more like fabled heroes with crazy abilities from their sacrifice. Odin cut out his eye so he could see the future and protect the realms better, Tyr lost his hand when chaining Fenrir, and even Mimir had his head cut off but Odin revived him as a head. It makes perfect sense that the gods in this expansion aren't indestructible, but they do have amazing abilities!

      Kaldheim gods die when killed.

    • @marcoscolon5348
      @marcoscolon5348 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Yes, but I was also thinking how in the world of Kaldheim a lot of tribes, like the elves in the plane, dispise the modern gods and call them the usurpers. Maybe in the future we get to see the elf gods (I forgot their names in the lore) and they may have indestructible as they were the "original" gods and the modern gods couldn't actually kill them but just bind them like "Binding of the old gods".

    • @ethansmith8813

    You know Wizards is a bit rushed for the story when a 15 minute video does a better job explaining the gods than the official story.

  • @MusicoftheDamned
    @MusicoftheDamned 3 ปีที่แล้ว +23

    There is some irony that the true God of Lies that was indisposed before the story even started and still is imprisoned in ice is arguably the currently safest god post-Kaldheim set, the whole "Koma fell into Karfell" thing aside.

    • @MusicoftheDamned
      @MusicoftheDamned 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Mullerornis Right, but none of the gods probably do at this point given how doomed Esika was looking when the story ended. So he's basically still the safest compared to all the other gods even by metric save for Egon, who ages backwards anyway, and maybe Cosima, who is technically a Cosmos Monster.
      EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, in a fit of greater irony, by that metric Valki might even be safer than I thought given how harmless getting completely covered in ice tends to be in fiction and how flawlessly it preserves people without killing them unlike real life. So if anything, Valki probably still has to worry about aging less than everything except Egon as long as he's stuck in ice.

      @HTYM 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I hate to be that guy, but here goes...
      Jorn is a made up character. Unless the creator of said card comes out and verifies your claim, you can pronounce it however you like as long as everyone else understands what you're talking about.
      I get it, the whole Norse connection thing... however (raises green cup), this is Kaldheim a plane in Magic: The Gathering. It may be based in Scandinavian lore but that doesn't mean that ot actually _is_ Scandinavian.
      Besides, I can't seem to find a town named Kaldheim anywhere on a map of Norway (sips drink).
      Bottom line: call the little guy whatever you want. I'm sure he won't be offended. 😊

      I agree that it could be Juh and not Yuh, as per the creators' decision, but the context they provide is ample to support the Idea that it's Yorn. If you think the creator's intent actually matters, maybe take a hint

    The secondary permanent on the rear is such a perfect way to support playing 4-ofs of these legendary creatures, especially when cards like Cosima & Esika are complemented so well by their back face, and Alrund even gives you something to do in the time leading up to you having enough mana to play the big guy.
    Conversely, though, the fact that you have to choose between permanents like Esika and the Prismatic Bridge for your commander board kind of puts a damper on those decks...
    For my favourite, though, I think I have to say Toralf, just because of the glee I get from imagining the looks on everyone's faces when you resolve Star of Extinction with him out. >:)

    Kaldheim is my favorite plane other than probably Innistrad. My family originates from Norway & my last name was Norwegian until when my ancestors came to America, they had to change the ö to an O. Anyways, my favorite commander deck that I own is Cosima, God of the Voyage & always wondered if she just liked dolphins lol. I look at them when I cast her vehicle side. The deck is tribal blue vehicles and a few creature cards for crewing and some that animate artifacts & put +1/+1 counters on them. It's a fun deck, I may have to look at landfall payoffs and see if any are worth a slot.

    can you have reidane and her artifact form in a commander deck as long as they are flipped

    • @MagicArcanum
      @MagicArcanum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Unfortunately you can only have one copy of the card anywhere in your deck of 100. If she's your Commander, you cannot have her again within the 99, even if you just wanted to play her artifact side.

    So Esika prepares the Cosmos Elixir for the gods of Kaldheim, and that allows them to be immortal? But Esika wasn't always around, since she came into being when Alrund communed with the world tree... So how did they get the cosmos elixir before that? I'm confused

    • @MagicArcanum
      @MagicArcanum  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We have to assume that before Esika's creation, the gods were not immortal. Alrund probably tried to commune with the World Tree early on, and has been enjoying the benefits of the elixir since.
