      Thanks a lot for your appreciation. And I too feel that way a lot of the time. But there is always room for at least a little optimism - there are some great illustrators out there even now.

    Mr Beard : Sir I am so impressed by the art of this illustrator , I thank you for the exposure in this less than graceful early 21st Century ... we need to look back and learn from our forbearers' their symbology and use of color , and posture , a flow as it were. I am now retired but I do Photography , and when I can I would delight highly in posing mean and women , using these illustrators as a catalyst , a reference of light and shadow ... So much has been lost over the decades of the Post WW2 years and then the " irreverent " and whoring 1960's where beauty was to shock ... Elegance , spirit , and uplifting ideals all need to return and in this man's life's work ... I see these timeless qualities.
    Peter ; thank you . 🤔☺🙏

    As most here, I had never heard of this artist/illustrator, although in my case far less surprising😉 Due to your series, I'm becoming a poster fan, and plan on looking for frameable objects (most probably prints, but still...) There are so many! You are also teaching me how to look at art, someone who is a non artistic person finds incredible and enlightening.
    One thing that strikes me in the life of this artist, is the commitment to his marriage and family which seem remarkably devoid of the more common love 'em and leave 'em of so many. It says much for his honour and ideals that he was able to live through two world wars with his family and honour still intact.

    I had to laugh (if only for the benefit of my stimulus-starved cat) at your four-step example of Marcello using photographic reference, in which the final version might easily have been done purely from imagination. But as usual, Pete, it was another very interesting historical vignette of another excellent artist.

    It's easy to recognize his love for the beauty of the female figure and femininity.
    For me, I can't escape feeling that he shared perspectives (or was influenced) in a few of these examples by Maxfield Parrish's fancy of enhanced reality. IMO, it's unmistakable.

    Just a thought (while I'm waiting for the Joaeph Clement Coll material you promised). Even though he's wa-ay out of your time frame I wonder what you think of Michael Vollbracht.
    I am old enough to remember some people from that generation - and of course Rhode Island School of Design was founded to serve the textile industry, so it brought a lot of Italians here (including my first drawing teacher - who fought for Italy in WW II before becoming an American POW). Most of the people I knew from the Great War era had a certain reticence drilled into them which to me makes your comments about his attitudes very informative. I get the feeling he wouldn't want us to know more and if we do for heaven's sake don't discuss it,
    All and all thoroughly charming and satsfying. Thank you.

      @petebeard  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hello again and thanks a lot for your appreciation of this video, and ongoing support of the channel. Coll was ready and waiting for the return of the unsung heroes series, but after you mentioned him I took another dive into the internet and have just about gathered enough material to so a solo video - which he more than deserves. It'll still be a while before it's completed and he isn't exactly front of the queue but I look forward to doing him a bit more justice. Regarding Michael Vollbracht I was unaware of him but having taken a look my initial impression is fairly indifferent. That doesn't mean I think he's bad, but it's the kind of post-pop art approach I'm not wild about.

    Well, Pete, put me on the list with those who don't know Dudovich's work. Fantastic posters. The designs are stunning, simple but powerful. Sigh...another art form, the poster, that has gone out of style during these modern times. As you've shown in other videos, the poster was a major source of advertising and work for artists. Which brings up a question: along with the craft of drawing, designing, and painting the illustration image, I'm curious how involved Dudovich was with the typography. Did he design and hand letter the text himself or did someone else handle that? Obviously with some products, the type was part of the logo, but, with the La Rizascente posters, for example, the font changes. Was that his decision , did he design the typography as well? (something that I'm miserable at doing, so I'm always curious). That's a whole other skill and an important one. Thanks again, Pete, for another introduction to a great illustrator/designer. Sunshine today, but methinks more clouds and rain later. Sigh...that bottle of bourbon is looking better and better these dark, chilly evenings🙂

    • @petebeard
      @petebeard  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi again and thanks of course for your comments. I don't know this for sure but given that all his posters were created as separate lithographic runs from images on stone the lettering had to be an integral component of the design, and that would have fallen to the creator. Some bits look like they have been based on existing fonts and maybe modified, but the shortish answer has to be that Dudovich did the lot, even if he had technical assistance (and most likely did) in creating the actual stones. And please don't get me started on the demise of the illustrated poster. I'm currently making a video about travel posters and it breaks my heart that this is now yet another dead duck.

    As a ,long time ago, art history student I was only ever exposed to commercial & illustrative art through the likes of William Morris or Toulouse-Lautrec [and perhaps a cheeky bit of aubrey beardsley] and altimately captivated by Art nouveaux. I think a time will come when all manner of fine art will be seen collectively as a whole. With the dawn of A.I. all styles of 'physically' created art must be seen in true context with all of its gruelling processes, from training to painstaking dedication, technique and style. I think the odd camera obscura, prick & pounce or even tracing a photograph techniques will be looked upon differently and the idea of 'cheating' will be a hard case to prove!

    What a tremendous sense of compositional balance, fluidity, and tonal colours. True Art. Take a look at some of the AI created thumbnails here on TH-cam. Abysmal. Artificial and lifeless. No human spirit. The saddest part is that younger generations have no appreciation of the skill level it takes to create work like this. They're taught to value ugliness. Not beauty.
