  • Johannes Vermeer is one of the most beloved and renowned artists in the world today. Images from his paintings have become part of our collective imagination and are instantly recognizable.
Vermeer’s paintings depict a world inhabited by refined and cultivated women, respectful or troublesome servants, charming young people, and learned men. His ruthless elimination of unnecessary objects results in an art that suspends time and leaves us, the viewers, always wanting to know more.
Vermeer’s death in 1675 was sudden and incredibly sad. Overwhelmed by poverty, physically weakened, and humiliated, he died at the age of 45. Soon afterward, his paintings were sold to cover his debts, and Vermeer faded into obscurity. However, his rediscovery nearly 200 years later has seen his popularity soar, claiming both our hearts and our admiration. Today, he is an icon of Dutch painting.

What's your favorite Vermeer painting: "Girl with a Pearl Earring" or "The Milkmaid"? Have you ever had the chance to see them in real life?

You can tell that he adores women...never shows them in a negative light.

as a fan of vermeer, i thought, do we really need another documentary of his life? so glad it didn’t keep me from viewing this deep, thoughtful dive into the artist’s life and career. very well done. so sad that this master artist never got the platitudes he deserved while he was alive.

This is quite a good film with very helpful remarks about ancillary events in the world which affected Vermeer's life and art. It was very instructive for me.

Thank you. It was very informative. For me, he was the grand master of them all . The girl with the red hat came to dublin this year. Blew me away . 👌

This was so lovely! I’ve watched just about everything on Vermeer I can find, but I never get tired of learning about this amazing artist! I wonder if we’ll ever find another Vermeer? At the very least I hope they find the one stolen from the Isabella Stewart Gardener museum!

I'm the furthest thing from an art lover as you'll ever see so why I clicked on this documentary I couldn't tell you. Maybe it was because Girl w/ a Pearl Earring is one of my favorite films. Whatever the reason, I'm glad I watched it; extremely interesting.🙂

That doesn't mean you can't draw inspiration from his work for your own art, even if your styles seem far apart! I'm sure you can learn some of Vermeer's techniques and incorporate them into your own creative process! 🤗😉

It is sad to know, so many artists tried to take advantage and credit themselves for Vermeer’s work.
Unfortunately, this treacherous act is still being carried out in today’s world.

Around 48:23 where the lady is writing a letter; why would a servant be present unless the lady of the house is writing a letter on her behalf..? There's the possibility that she's illiterate. She's not looking at what's been written down, possibly being discreet OR, because she's describing her thoughts and feelings. It does look like she's speaking..anyway; just a thought.

I think the view of Delft is Vermeer's 3rd cityscape. The second was lost

Actually it was NOT Vermeer who got rid of the Cupid on the wall behind the girl reading a letter (possibly his oldest daughter modeled for it? or a pretty servant wearing one of the costumes from Vermeer's dress up box) The Germans ran tests on that painting and have decided that the cupid was painted over later and have restored it to its original condition, makes sense considering that the girl is reading a love letter. Am I the only one who thinks that Vermeer might have committed suicide after it was discovered that he had embezzled from his mother-in-law?
