This is the opening video of the PC Game, Wing Commander III, which was recorded using the video capture feature of the DOSbox front end application, D-Fend Reloaded v. 1.0.3
There is something really special about 90s CGI in videogames. This is comparable to the live action scenes in Jedi Knight: Dark Forces 2. The CGI didn't look photorealistic and wasn't trying to. This was from a 5 year period where it could suspend your disbelief while not trying too hard to be perfect. I love it!
It was absolutely trying to be photorealistic. But because of low budget and technology, compromises had to be made, which ironically resulted in that style that you like.
@@youuuuuuuuuuutube I think the videos are in ega resolution, on crt monitors they looked way better, especially then when we were used to 240p television when it came to video...
At this point, the novelty was the very use of CGI itself. The distinctive look of what we now consider poor CGI was something that was sought out back in the early 90s. That time passed and now it looks dated but when WC3 came out the effects were a really big deal
This is one of the best games ever made. I played it to no end back in the day. It’s story and atmosphere were top notch, to say nothing of the gameplay.
Chris Roberts outdid himself with this game. The camera angles were limited due to the computer generated backgrounds, however the overall atmosphere and production values were of the highest standard. Good gaming memories :)
This was the pinnacle of the WC series. Angel’s death, the destruction of the Concordia, Hobbe’s betrayal, the destruction of the Kilrathi home world….. There was actual loss and sadness to this game.
Yeah, the game had a pretty impressive cast. Especially considering games back then weren't taken as serious by the general public and the media as today, but seen as "kids stuff".
I've met Mark Hamill three times. Whenever I mentioned that I loved him in this game (twice) he changed the subject to his other work quickly. Yeah, his acting was far from great in this game (especially with amateur Ginger Lynn), but it worked.
He'd been unwittingly brainwashed by the kilrathi, with a secret kill-command embedded deep within his psyche. Didn't he end up defying it and sacrificing himself? I can't quite remember clearly.
From "Origin: We create worlds" to "Origin: We exclusively sell EA's crap because we're not actually Origin anymore thanks to EA consuming our soul and wearing our tattered skin as a mask."
The Kilrathi costumes in a fukn video game from....🤔 20 years ago...? Look better than CGI from current Star Wars. Better use of Mr Hamill than TLJ... I never realized what a star studded cast this game had... loveded it!!
What? The only good thing about the costumes were the head designs (although far too big for the bodies). The rest of the costume made them look like Thunderbirds puppets. And even taking into account that your comment was posted 4 years ago, the game even in 2020 was closer to 30 years old, not 20.
I could die happy if we ever got a remaster of WC 3 and 4. Just a little polish for the videos and update the game graphics. This is one of my all time favorites.
One of the best games of all times. My recommendation is to try it on hardest difficulty, because that challenge really intensifies the atmosphere. Me and a friend played it in hotseat co-op many years ago and we had a blast. Speaking of co-op - just how awesome all these space games would've been with a proper co-op mode. Just do a remake with better graphics and added multiplayer. That would make me re-buy so many old classic games.
Chris Robert’s did an amazing job on this series!!! I wish Wing Commander survived till this day. Would be cool to see how it would look like in todays climate.
No game has ever compared to this. Granted I was a kid at the time, but I think I've spent my life trying to recreate the magic I felt playing this. Probably why I gave up playing games, everything feels stale.
Mass Effect Trilogy good sir/madam. I also love the WC games and while ME isn't a flight game the writing is better, characters good and story decent. Combat in 1 is meh... but 2 onwards is good. They even have that feature that if you carry your save from the last game it uses that and adjusts the story. So if a character dies in no.1, they're dead.
man I miss the gold old FMV in videos games. yeah, they're sadly outdated and etc. C&C red alert 3 was the only game in modern gaming that brought back the classic FMV cut scenes and it a shame it the last.
11! The 11th is me lol. I would pay for a modern remake though. I imagine CR would crack the shits if EA pulled that haha. Long story. Got burned by Star Citizen.
Such Nostalgia indeed! I spent countless sleepless nights playing WC1/WC2, and those two hooked me for the series till the end. However, I was very disappointed Story wise when Hobbes turns out to be an agent, the events of WC3 did not make justice to the previous story arcs nor to their ethical direction, all of the sudden it all became self centred narcissistic in a way and immoral. Last ditch weapons mass Destruction Weapons looked like WWII USA versus Japan inspired. And not so much original once looked at from that angle. Nevertheless the series endured and I continued playing and beyond to WC5, Privateer, and then Starlancer (I really enjoyed that one) and Freelancer. So here's to a Classic anyways! :)
Oh man, it's dope to hear somebody else with that opinion! Cheers! (I actually thought that WC4 was a far better entry in the franchise than WC3, in terms of themes)
imagine if this game was remade, and well made to boot. we all know that ea, who killed the company that brought us this wonderful game, will butcher it if they ever did
Because in some ways Star Citizen is a reimagined and expanded Wing Commander. Squadron 42 will be a full length stand alone single player game within the universe where you are a fighter pilot based on an aircraft carrier. Chris Roberts was the creator for Wing Commander and is the lead for Star Citizen and even includes some of the same actors.
You won't be seeing Kilrathi in SQ42....ever. SC has nothing to do with WC.- other than voice acting. Different universe altogether. The Kilrathi are not even original in and of themselves, but taken from the original Kzin race in Larry Nivens RingWorld series of novels.
WOW, Sebastian Stan really DOES look like a young Mark Hamill. Stan's only 7 years younger than Hamill is here, and you can kinda see similarities in how they act. 5:59 just this rest of the scene especially, I can easily see Stan, its uncanny. Their voices are pretty different obviously, Hamill's voice is distinctly higher and raspier, but I'm pretty sure if Seb tried he could mimic its breathiness. UGH this just makes me mad that he's not playing an adult Luke Skywalker between RotJ and TFA
WC3 & 4 are 2 of the greatest achievement in video gaming! think about it, in 1994 all we see in gaming scene was just NES/SNES 8bit games or DOOM... and then this kind of technology wonder came out, whose jaw wasn't dropped at that time when he/she saw that for the first time ever?
A Skywalker and a Mentat. The Kilrathi were fucked from the beginning. Too bad Dr. Soran didn't bring his star killing missiles he used at Armagossa and Veridian 3. War would have been over in weeks he would have been in the Nexus.
+M.A. Moreno Like that's not good-enough for videogame storytelling? Even if you want to look at something modern like "Mass Effect," with character depth, Jesus, the whole narrative concept of 'Mass Effect' is practically ripped from this game! You walk around your ship talking to your crew, select them for missions, and make choices.
I can't fully grasp the hate that the 1999 Wing Commander movie got in relation to the Kilrathi design. Yes, the faces were a bit ridiculous, but at least they didn't have massive, disproportionate heads as they do here in WC3. I know I'm speaking sacrilege to many whom revere this game (not denying how awesome the game is, in general), but that's how I feel.

Lucasarts should have made a star wars luke game with mark hamill in the 90s. They would have raked in so much cash.
I still have my original Wing Commander (1) box. Playing that with my dad as a kid was the best.
With all 4 CDs intact?

So what are you trying to say, he doesn't like his work on this game?
I thought the acting and greenscreen work were excellent in this game, can't imagine why Mark Hamill would be ashamed.
He probably tries to forget about FMVs existing, since they’re so dated or he didn’t think his acting was very strong in the game.
Interesting. He worked with Chris Roberts on Squadron 42.
Man computer games have come a long way. I was so excited to play this game and really upset when Hobbs became the bad guy.
Yeah.

I have an answer.
He's a hack who got lucky with who he hired.

Budget concerns, and Chris Roberts happened.
