  • Reba McEntire and her band suffered a terrible loss on March 16, 1991. That was the day that a plane crash on the Otay Mountain claimed the lives of seven members of the band, as well as Reba's tour manager. In today's tour, we talk about this tragic 1991 crash and find the location where one of two planes carrying the band crashed into a mountain top near San Diego California.

    Seeing Reba accept her award and dedicating it to her 7 buddies was heartbreaking. I read about this in Reba's autobiography. At that time (1994) I was a huge Reba fan. I read all the details about how she handled telling the parents or husband/wives what parts of their loved ones were left. It was her decision to do that. At a show after the accident (it may have been at the awards ceremonies) she sang, for the first and last time the song "If I Had Only Known". I can't imagine how she managed to get through it without breaking up, but she felt that she, herself, should sing the song for the band.
    She never sang it again. You can only hear it on the album. Thanks, "Dude", for the geographical details; I had no idea where it was .

    One day, many years ago, the SOCAL controller forgot about me as I was flying southward toward Brown Field in IMC. Had I not known about Otay Mountain, I might have landed at the same place and in the same way as Reba McEntire’s band did. Thankfully my position awareness and assertiveness with ATC kept me out of trouble.

      Being a SoCal Based Pilot, I know Otay Mnt. well! But ATC has you on The Scope & they know your Altitude, ASL & AGL as well as The Surrounding Land Scape, & the very idea that they could forget about you is unconscionable! Generally speaking, ATC are everyday heroes that are "Flying" numerous Aircraft & preventing such Accidents as Reba's Band & Your Near Miss. But ATC'ers are usually at The Top Of Their Game & at The Ready If Anyone Declares An Emergency. It's a good thing that you reminded them that you were there & you were able to avoid a Similar Fate. Despite How Good ATC'ers are, they're still only Human! I hope that you filed A Complaint with The FAA over their failure when you were departing San Diego.

    As a military pilot: These pilots strike me as unconscionably careless. You are required to KNOW the minimum altitudes to clear everything along your path, both mountains and man-made objects. It is not FSS's responsibility. It is YOURS. "Poor flight planning" is right.

    • @littleferrhis
      @littleferrhis 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a bit harsh. True, its not FSS’s responsibility, but pilots do look to services like FSS for accurate information. FSS may have just been advising, but it almost sounds like they were pressuring the captain to make a decision he didn’t want to for their convenience, which is definitely not acceptable.
      IDK I can see a trusting person easily making a mistake like that, like one of the last words the Air Florida 90 FO saying, “that doesn’t seem right, well maybe it is”.

    • @DudeTours
      @DudeTours  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      A home cockpit would be great, I guess I would have to become far more proficient in flying in the sim to justify that. Someday I will move up to larger aircraft. Maybe someday we will cross paths in MSFS! Thanks for watching.

      @@DudeTours I used to have a lot of flight sim videos I made them as far back as 08 but I recently pulled my videos off TH-cam. The only thing is with msfs things are still coming along with comparability for cockpits, for example my go flight radios I've had forever don't work yet with msfs or work good yet.... I probably should have gone with something else there. But I have a 737 autopilot effis modules and prosim are working pretty well and most switches. But then for whatever reason all my LEDs in my overhead have stopped working in the last few weeks, they work but there's some conflict I'm still searching, so a cockpit isn't always what it's cracked up to be. I sprung for PFC stand up yoke and pedals a few years ago, couldn't get them working for anything in msfs. I'm back to saitek for the time being lol. But at least I'm flying and can run the autopilot and nav screens. Love it regardless. Anyway take care!!!

    I lived in San Diego at the time. The band departed from BROWN field with a long runway suitable for business jets. There are some hills surrounding the airport and apparently the aircraft failed to clear one of the hills and went down killing the entire band. Reba fortunately wasn't on board. The news the next morning shocked the entire city. It was unbelievable absolutely tragic chain of events. REBA never got over that dark day.

    • @michaelmartinez1345
      @michaelmartinez1345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @mark r. Devereux, the info on the video of the runway length at Brown Field said it is about 799 Feet long, which of course is erroneous ... Google says it is 7,977 feet long and has an elevation of 526 msl... Which is what it probably was back in March of 1991... So, plenty of runway with a fairly low elevation... What was the primary cause of that crash is how the information that was given in regards to the altitude of the surrounding terrain... The controller gave the pilot a number that told how far Above Ground Level (AGL) the terrain was, when the pilot mis-understood the meaning of the terrain altitude, being above Mean Sea Level (MSL)... That simple misunderstanding cost 10 lives and a plane to perish... It is so sad.... If only the pilot checked his charts, and clarified with the controller 3 letters (AGL) before the Ascent, they would have cleared that mountain, and probably would have been fine... It is the details, that so often make the difference with things like this..

    • @markr.devereux3385
      @markr.devereux3385 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaelmartinez1345I've been thinking about what the pilot was doing preflight and his dumb decisions after ascending to altitude insufficient for terrain directly in front of him. FAA has the charts in a folder available for anybody using that field. Better study them especially if you plan to depart in the early morning hours. I know how dark it gets out there and there are no landmarks to speak of. Absolutely preventable crash. Was the pilot impaired or sleep deprived we'll never know?? He's in lear jet albeit fully loaded he's got to have enough altitude to climb over those mountains with room to spare.

    • @michaelmartinez1345
      @michaelmartinez1345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markr.devereux3385 Yes, the pilots should have checked the charts of the surrounding terrain... They were in a hurry to reach their next destination, during the darkness of the early morning, which are probably some of the main factors that led-up to this accident... Being in a hurry , not familiar with that airport & surrounding areas, and not checking the charts of what the terrain is like in that area..... BTW, at the beginning of the video, a description of what type of plane it was that crashed was mentioned... I remember it as being one of those British Business twin Jets... I believe it was a Hawker Siddele jet...

    • @markr.devereux3385
      @markr.devereux3385 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@michaelmartinez1345 this is one you'd like to have a black box and listen to conversation in cockpit. They seemed a little too much concerned with airspace around SAN DIEGO INTERNATIONAL than thinking through a safe flight plan out of the immediate area. If he was turning prior to clipping the hill maybe? He overestimated his speed altitude and spatial awareness during most critical moments. A tragic chain of events

    • @michaelmartinez1345
      @michaelmartinez1345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@markr.devereux3385 That is an excellent observation!!! A cvr (cockpit voice recorder) , probably would have exposed their main focus & concerns during the flight... They hit terrain about 10 miles from where they took-off from, which means that they had plenty of opportunity to build airspeed and energy for a healthy climb-out well above the terrain... And Limburg field generally shuts-down after 23:00 , because of people with houses encroaching into the crash zones of that airport were whining about noise... So at 01:45 when the accident happened, very little if any traffic was around the TCA of Limburg Field, because of the late night/early morning shut-down that was imposed by the local residents surrounding/encroaching the crash zones of Limburg Field.. . This was definitely pilot error, as he did not check the local charts of the surrounding terrain from Brown field, where he departed from... A Very Sad event...

    A friend of mine is the father of the co pilot Chris Hollinger. This accident was entirely the fault of the pilot who wouldn't listen to the input of his co pilot or anyone else, thought he knew it all. Chris had told his father about this in a phone call a few days before the accident. But, it would seem there's a prison to one side of the airport and the pilot was blinded by the lights from that prison on takeoff and didn't see the mountain. When I was learning to fly. my cfi and I got to name a waypoint holger over the airport where Chris had learned to fly in Hamilton, Oh [HAO] in his honor. Catalina was a pretty place, not far from San Pedro, Cal. It was enchanted and had quite a bit of really nice scenery... I remember that on the SE side of the island, that was large and privatized, were wild boar and various animals living there... The access to the spendy tourist traps was easy to get to, but the best places to see were accessed by hiking with water , good boots a day pack with energy bars... There were cool places to dive into the harbor on the NE side end of Avalon.... The best way to see the island , was by flying over it... But it is probably very crowded and has restricted airspace now... When my brother and I flew over it, it was around 1971.... We flew in a Cessna 150 from Torrance Airport, about 30 miles to the North...

    • @EA-vd4gd
      @EA-vd4gd 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      From the explanation in the video I believe the pilot did have his Instrument certification but his IFR flight plan had expired. With 20/20 hindsight we now know he should have stayed on the ground until it was refiled. Instead, to save time, ATC suggested he take off VFR then switch. It sounds like the pilot was skeptical about doing this, but did so anyway. So tragic, if he had only listened to that little voice inside, they would have been late, but alive. Which underscores how we often fail to make the best decisions when it's late at night and we're tired. RIP 🙏

      No change in law could have prevented it.
      Why a local FSS didnt point out the 3,550' high Otay Mountain - when VFR & TCA had them limited to 3000' max is baffling to me.

    Im baffled how a FSS advisor forgot to mention the 3,550' tall Otay Mtn to a night flight that was limited to 3000' due to VFR & TCA.
    Seems like failure to advise correctly + pilots unfamiliarity with San Diego county terrain =
    Cause of crash.

    I did my private check ride out of Brown field. Flew from Montgomery Field to pick up the examiner. We almost were in a mid air east of the field in the mountains with another plane. We also inadvertently took off one time at Montgomery with a tow bar attached to the front wheel.

    • @michaelmartinez1345
      @michaelmartinez1345 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Ready Oar Knot - "Took off with a TOWBAR attached to the front wheel." You're kidding, right? How did the landing go? What kind of a plane was it? How long was it till you were contacted by the local FSDO , in that area? Did the towbar happen on the same flight as the near-miss / mid-air collision that You just described here? Did the flight examiner soil his knickers when he saw the "towbar that was attached to the front wheel" when You landed the plane to give him a ride, and soil his knickers again, with the near mid-air collision that he probably has never forgotten since? Did you have to call a cab , after you arrived in Gontmomary, to get the flight examiner safely back to his residence? Is that the reason You shifted gears to become a Nautical Feller?

    This is so sad... If only the ATC controller or the pilot said 3 letters (AGL) after the suggested flight profile and altitude was recommended out of Brown field, Ca. , That accident probably would have never happened... Another problem was the rush to get places, far away so quickly... These compressed time schedules are the main reasons that so many accidents take place... In aviation, on the roads, or just trying to meet challenging deadlines.... Compressed time schedules often greatly contribute to the causes of many accidents... A Compressed time schedule, is the one of the primary causes of the worst aviation accident in history, on 3/27/77 at the island of Teneriffe, where 583 people perished and 61 people survived this horrible accident... Take a little extra time to be safe... People will eventually realize that their lives might depend on this, and their safe journeys were uneventful, because of the many people, who care about safety, and prioritize safety in what they do...

    On one hand transportation is greatly impacted without flight plan caveats. We all know how many times even are car trips are reconfigured. Flight service could have been swamped and humans get the ole "hope he knows whats hes doing". One things for sure. Flight service had a complete visual of the plan weather it was current, expired, abandoned. And it was to scale the Otay Mtns.

    I'm a Jet-Rated Pilot & NOT a Country Music Fan, more about that momentarily. However, I've been an Actor & Performer all of my life. In 1991 I found myself doing a Daily Syndicated Country Music Radio Show from Nashville. In my personal life, I was enduring some terrible tragedies of my own. The recent loss of my Father, my wife & children & my mother was dying of Terminal Cancer. Sometimes after my Morning Radio Show, I'd take my Citation III Jet up just to get away from my problems & to get out of my head for a while. Flying was my one escape from the world & I'd just fly to different places or I'd just fly around. This kind of flying Doesn't necessarily require a Flight Plan. Many times if I decided to fly to a specific location I'd file a Flight Plan after I was airborne. Every weekend I'd fly home to L.A. to be with my Mother & make sure that my Mother was receiving the best care possible. I begged my employer to release me from my 2 Year Contract due to Personal Hardship. I finally reached an Agreement when I offered to buy my own Studio Equipment and Set It Up In My House In California & Continue To Do My Show via Satellite To The Flagship Station In Nashville & Out To Subscriber Radio Stations. They Agreed. That was an enormous relief for me. Well, having said all of that,,,I'd missed The News Of Reba's Band Members Tragic Air Crash, & I didn't hear about it until many years later, but one of her Hits fromThe Summer of 1991 was Her Song, "Walk On." Since I found Great Comfort in
    escaping into The Sky In My Airplane, I soon changed it to "Fly On." Still the message within The Song spoke to me! I have to say that it was one of the things, along with my faith in G-d, that helped me to get through the Worst Chapters Of My Life. Even though I "Changed The Lyrics A Little," and added It To My "Flying Tape," a tape that I listened to quietly while I flew my Plane. It was the only Country Song ever to make that tape. (I'm a "Rock-N-Roller" from Way Back.) I left Radio years ago, though I always enjoyed it, I'm back to being a Full-Time Character Actor. My Horrible Period Of Life Is Far Behind Me because I "Walked On" & "Flew On," & I found The Sun Again.
