Exporting MaterialX Materials from Houdini | Houdini 19

  • One of the major advantages of MaterialX is the ability to transfer material networks to other applications. Houdini gives you the ability to export MaterialX materials but it is still pretty new. There are some features that are not available yet but hopefully soon we will have those abilities.
    You will need to download the latest version of Houdini in order to have this capability.

    your videos on MtlX really help :) if you take requests I would love too see one on Terrain shading with triplanar projections and/or one for translucent foliage shading with it...I cant really wrap my head around the MtlX triplanar setups.

      I looked at it briefly and also was a little confused. I'll put some more time into it and see what I can come up with. Theres not much in the way of help for MaterialX so I'm happy to help. Thanks for the suggestion

    Importing MtlX as well. I can only find the one from Arvid Schnieder and this other one that is pretty recent but it has things like using an include operator and it would be nice to have something simple.

    Hi. A great Video. Would the UDIM workflow be the same but just adding textureName..exr ?

      I havent tried anything with udims yet. You might have to use the texture coordinates node for a UDIM workflow though. That is my guess anyways as I haven't found a use for that node

    Hi, thanks for sharing this experience! I have an issue when reimporting the mtlx back to Houdini, there are no texture information in Maya this mtlx works fine. I have no clue how to fix it. Do you have any hint what to do in this case?

      Make sure that your materials are setup correctly. By that I mean mtlx requires the correct inputs. Houdini will convert a color to float for example even when working with mtlx. Things like roughness are float values and should be set to float. If you ever have questions about what an input type is in Houdini you can hover over the input and it will say color, float, vector3 etc. That would be where I would start other than that it's hard to say

I also took a look on two other files and the one coming with the beautiful game tutorial works have a little other structure the other working file is identical to the one exported and not working. 🤔🫤😵‍💫

      Thats interesting. It's hard to say what is going on without dealing with it myself. I would try another file that is very basic to make sure things are working and then slowly break down the file to troubleshoot what is causing it

    I tried using clarisse because of your recommendation of how fast it is, yet I am wondering If I am doing something wrong. In houdini i can add 200,000 points deform them with noise and it moves smoothly in the viewport I can examine smoothness of animation etc. If I import as abc into c4d it is smooth in viewport.if I import into clarisse as abc the animaiton is jumpy in the viewport . the viewport itself is fast I can move around etc but i haven;t been able to see the point abc animation(deformed by noise) as smoothly as in houdini or c4d viewport am I doing something wrong?

      Clarisse will inherently preview animation slower because its progressively rendering at all times where as Houdini and C4D are not. Thats not where the speed is for Clarisse. Clarisse is very fast for scene assembly and iterating. Its also very fast for rendering with Angie with what is supported in the early access build but that is limited currently.

      ​@@InsideTheMindSpace oh thx that makes sense now. scene assembly is definitely in another level when it comes to clarisse. will explore what that means if instancing animation and seeing it play smooth is slow maybe I just need to do more playblast etc

      Yeah I totally forgot about this when making the video but as far as I know there is no color management in materialx at this time so everything should be in linear space
