What's the ultimate kind of pick-up? Virtually every manufacturer in the segment thinks it's a vehicle specced up with lashings of leather and hi-tech luxury kit. Only Isuzu sees things differently. They reckon the ultimate pick-up is one with ultimate go-anyway ability: and this is it, the company's D-Max model in its most specialist 'Arctic Trucks AT35' trim.
    Background
You might understandably struggle with the thought of paying the best part of £50,000 for an Isuzu D-Max pick-up - more if you include the VAT. But stay with us because this AT35 version is a rather special one. It's been tailored by Icelandic extreme terrain specialists Arctic Trucks to meet the demanding needs of the worst Scandinavian terrain and was first launched back in 2016, then updated a couple of years later, before the new generation model we're trying here was launched in 2022.
If this pick-up can't get you where you want to go, then no other one will. And it's a rather refreshing antidote to the bling that otherwise afflicts the upper end of this market segment.

It can tow up tp 3.5 tons but would struggle heavily. The engine is way too small/weak, especially in AT35 trim, in my country you can even get it in AT37 version. Have had a 2017 and 2019 Dmax AT35 before. Older model but same engine, I think though, the auto has been modified in the latest, (2022 upwards) model, the auto in the older model constantly downshifted, so I put it in manual mode an did the gearing myself, much better that way.
My 2019 had a remap done, which raised the power to 200hp/440nm. It made the truck much faster compared to stock. Only towing I did was a car trailer with a 1992 Toyota Hilux diesel on it. Around 2.3 tons. You could really feel the weight, so.. not the ideal tow vehicle. It should have had the engine used on the australian market, the tried n thrusted 3.0 litre one. 190 hp/450nm, it has a very flat torque curve, but sadly it is only euro5... Cheers from me in Norway

Hang on, I have a D-Max and I like it a lot. Isuzu makes a great off road capable pickup, however, just about every mid-size pickup manufactuer has an ultimate version that's "go anywhere". It is unfair to say that only Isuzu does this.
In the UK Ford had the Ranger Raptor, and Toyota has an Artic Trucks version of the HiLux too.
    Around the world we have:
Mazda: BT50 Thunder (Equiped with a rear diff lock and an off road bumper for the Ausie bush)
Chevrolet: Colorado ZR2 (35 inch tyres, two lockable diffs, twice as much power than the D-Max and generally more capable and purpose built than the D-Max At35)
Jeep Gladiator Rubicon: (33 inch tyres and more articulation and off road capability than any other mid-size truck anywhere)
Toyota: Tacoma TRD Pro (33 inch tyres and lockable rear diff)
And let's not forget the upcoming Ineos pickup, this may even exceed the Jeep Gladiator in terms of capability on many fronts.

And no matching spare wheel unless you’re prepared to carry it around in the tray which negates the purpose of a pickup.
