I asked Penusbmic about his name and he described it as being a mix of "Pen", "Usb" and "Mic", so I just call him "Pen-iu-es-b-mike". Also good video, thank you.

Hi, itch game dev here. I think that your HD icons failed bcuz of demographic. I think the main demographic of itch assets is either for prototyping or programmers (me). And bcuz of that, pixel art is more popular, as it is more easy to work with and easier to modify without ruining, unlike normal art.

im an artist looking to sell bases/templates for other artists or people who want customized assets and honestly making it free to fish for people to buy my other packs is probably the best idea im ever going to steal

That's a really smart move. I think the reason your highest selling one, the rpg hud elements is doing that well is because it can fit in most art styles while looking professional. If the hud market is not saturated, maybe you could expand on it with things like healthbars, and timers among other interface elements that are commonly needed.
Your isometric packs have lots of potential. Having the first one free was an interesting hook. You could make more packs themed around different environments and charge for them.
You are an amazing artist, wish you the best in your projects!.

Something to consider is making icons or sprites that have (normal, hover, and clicked) versions. This is what a lot of skilled developers require. Just look into the different way games approach it. Sometimes with outlines, sometimes with the shades getting darker, or a flash when clicked.
Also another MASSIVE thing to look into is Laigter. Which is creating a map for sprites to recieve shadows within games.
Looking into those things and I'm sure you will be BANKING! You can even make a short video clip for your asset packs within unity. You aso wont have to worry about finding the gap in the market, instead you will be replacing EVERYTHING in the market.
As a dev why would I pick this one pack, when this other pack (yours) has a normal map layer as well and takes care of the work for adding dynamic shadows.

That is very interesting! Would probably try this with limeZu's approach of polishing one asset pack to make it too good not to buy :^D

A bit late to the party, but as a developer I also think quantity of assets matter as well. If you look at someone like Elthen on itch you see he has a bunch of free stuff (tilesets, characters, etc...) then a whole bunch of relatively cheap paid ones (really a lot by now). I find this is great since I can pick up his free stuff and use it when starting a new project, then if I decide to commit to the project I know I can get a bunch more tilesets and characters in the same style for relatively cheap.

ngl tho it does make me pissed a bit how the top seller one youre talking about is only 2 dollars or so... making everyone else also have to do it for dirt cheap or they wont sell in comparison...

literally… like i bet the prices are super competitive, why would anyone buy my beginner packs if there’s a huge cheap pack right there? super daunting

yeah its kinda distopic in a way. im working on making different packs with different styles to try and stand out but its hard when people do it for essentially nothing

Thanks so much for posting this! It's awesome to see how there are different ways to earn income on itch, even without publishing games! I love your itch profile btw. I was wondering if you could do a tutorial on how to customize an itch page like you customized yours to make it more unique!

Hey, thanks for your video. I would like to make 2D game assets as well and "What do people need?" is my biggest question.
Maybe your hand drawn icon pack didn't sell well because it's not as easy to edit as pixelart ones, and also it doesn't fit in any game style? I imagine people will buy assets as taking shortcuts in their own game development and edit them to fit their game needs just right?
