Could Palestine's Nelson Mandela be freed soon?

- After 22 years, could this be the moment Marwan Barghouti is released?
Barghouti is Palestine’s best known political prisoner.
He was a leading figure in the first and second intifadas and was secretary-general of Fatah when he was arrested in 2002. He was accused of orchestrating the murder of Israelis, charges which he denied. On his conviction, he was given five life terms in prison.
He’s often compared to Nelson Mandela who was also labelled as a terrorist and imprisoned for decades. He has continued to top opinion polls as a leading candidate to be the next Palestinian president even while in prison.
It has been reported that Hamas has put Barghouti at the top of the list of prisoners it would like to see released in any exchange deal between the group and Israel.
Earlier this month, his son, Arab Barghouti, was in London to raise awareness about the violent treatment his father and other Palestinian prisoners have received since 7 October.
Could his father be the next Palestinian leader? Does he have hope his father will be out soon?

I hope, as you do, that your father, who has been described as the Nelson Mandela of Palestine, will be released from prison soon, along with all the other thousands of Palestinian political prisoners.
His leadership will be a great encouragement for Palestinians and will, I am sure, help to bring unity among Palestinian politicians, democratic elections and ultimately a Palestinian State and peace in the Middle East!

I worry about this type of title. First, he’s his own man. It could be a conclusion drawn in a bio about him, but his own name needs to gain staying power and recognition. Also, if you advertise him as “the new Nelson Mandela”, won’t that alert his captors to harm him? We see how they operate. Something to consider. Mainly, he is his own man. He is Marwan Barghouti. ✊❤️
Fair points. However, calling Barghouti "the Palestinian Mandela" goes far, IMHO, to fight the trope that Palestinians have no leaders that want peace. That there is someone to negotiate with. I also expect that the Israelis already know his reputation. I'm personally impressed that Israel hasn't just disappeared him...
