I was the lead producer on Mass Effect 3 in Edmonton, and responsible for ME3 MP development. We didn’t make MP just for money, it was really a love letter to the coop shooter genre. Monetization was not the first thing we started with. I left after ME3, so I can’t speak to subsequent decisions, but I can say we really just wanted to make something special that would entertain people for a long time.

@@Raycevick Unreliable narration is a staple of 40k lore. There's an entire novel series about a hero of the Imperium writing his memoirs about how he isn't actually a big damned hero but just big damned lucky and actually kind of a coward. It's annotated by his long-suffering Inquisitor girlfriend (who has restricted the memoirs so people don't realise that he's not a big damned hero) and is genuinely hilarious. By the end you're not sure if he's actually a coward, a hero with a serious case of impostor syndrome or making shit up.

With these metrics, giving license to anyone to throw shit at the wall and see what sticks might show bad numbers. Late blooming when someone discovers that it's good a month after release might not be taken into consideration, or it has but the numbers are not as good as initial sales.

Part of the reason Warhammer (fantasy, 40k, Horus Heresy, Age of Sigmar, etc.) is like this now is because Games Workshop took the "spreadshot" approach to licensing - making the license cheap and easily accessible to development studios
This has resulted in a LOT of garbage - like a lot of really crappy mobile games - but it also means that the odds of some passionate dev team getting their hands on the franchise and making the game they want to make is higher, since the license is cheaper and more readily available
It's a significant departure from the usual "We will license our property but give you strict guidelines, oversight and will repeatedly meddle in it's development" that caracterizes most licensing deals, with Games Workshop the policy seems to be: "Here's a guidebook for the franchise, go nuts, if it's popular and good you'll hear from us again and get more investment for a cool sequel, if it's bad, it didn't cost us anything since we didn't invest in it to begin with"

    • @NoOne42
      @NoOne42 2 ปีที่แล้ว +156

It also helps that 40k is so loose with its canon, and strong with it's thematic foundations, that people can have a lot of freedom with what they do in the wider playground and not worry too that they'll make a mess of canon somewhere else, or be 'wrong'. And it's easier to make it feel like 40k. Mass Effect seems like something with very deep lore, and that and the character interactions is what makes the games great. While 40k does have that to some extent, a lot of the draw is the superficial stuff: Space Marine, for example, could be loosely described as 'supersoldier murders Ork incursion to save big robot, then murders demonic incursion'. And that's basically it: very simple, but still very 40k.

@@blackjacka.5097 The big game developers want to own the license themselves, not have it leant to them, that way if the game succeeds they get the full profit and credit and can have full control of what they do with the franchise from there. Smaller devs are more willing to buy other license/make a deal to use said license as it can act as a form of financial security/give them a chance to go up in the business world. If it succeeds they get more known, offered more license, and get to make more games.
This also means that the fans will get to see more of the games they really like, but at the cost of having to wade through a lot of bad games, books, etc. as well. Perhaps what demonstrates this all best is star craft. Originally, star craft was meant to be a warhammer game, but there was licensing issues and disagreements, so they decided to just make their own universe to fit the game they'd been developing and it was a major success giving them full control of their own IP and the license. Had they stuck with warhammer, whatever mini-franchise they created probably wouldn't have made it nearly as far as starcraft did.

Ironically, the economic and production choices of the two franchises sort of mirror the in game view on human life and war.
In Mass Effect the government sinks large sums of money into a small crew of highly skilled special operators who are expected to save the world.
In Warhammer 40K the empire has a steady production of expendable, yet very effective, fanatical warriors who are sent out into the cosmos to stem the tide of hungry monsters and conquering warlords.

It comes down to one thing, in mass effect the little guy doesn't matter, in all the aforementioned franchises, the dude who started off poor and has no magical superpower or enhancements or political or military power CAN STILL BE A HERO, mass effect doesn't have that.

There's been a similar hiccup with Star Wars - I don't believe people love the series for its consistency or groundbreaking storytelling, but rather that Star Wars under George Lucas was this massive multimedia behemoth, where people could try any bizarre and niche concept within the series' universe. Once Disney took over, things became infrequent and safe, and I think people liked the clunky charms of the old universe. Not to mention the relative lack of games during that now-expired exclusivity with EA.

Those stories aren't restricted to Russia either, so you get a look at what other countries do past the war. I've read quite a few of them, some were kinda not good, but others were legitimately great and worthy of the Metro-stamp. I believe that 4A Games even took some inspiration from some of the novels. There are plenty of franchises that I just want more of. I want to experience their world and the stories it can offer, and so often whether it's games, anime, tv shows, books, comics, plays, audio dramas (looking at you Yoko Taro) or the combination thereof, there's just not enough for me. That's when I'm glad I'm a Star Wars fan. 100 games, 100s of books and comics, 15 movies, 18 tv shows, "with a million more well on the way." You couldn't run out of Star Wars if you tried. Yeah, some of it's bad. Hell, a lot of it's bad, but almost inevitably that means that some of it is good, in fact some of it's the best fiction ever written, and when you find something like that, the KotORs, The Clone Wars, the Thrawn trilogy, it's utterly magical. Even if it took some digging to get there, you got to experience new stories in a universe that you love, and that's because the creator stuck with it and the fans stuck with it. The franchise could have died with the holiday special, before Empire was even released, but people didn't abandon it after it took a bad turn. The creator evolved the series, took risks, gained new fans and lost some old ones, and now it's still around today even though no two Star Wars fans will ever fully agree on what Star Wars they like, because it's different for everybody. Personally, I hate Jedi Power Battles, and I think the OT is 'fine,' but prefer the prequel era, which most Star Wars fans would consider heresy. If you've made a compelling universe, then you can make a lot of stories and genres work inside of it to appeal to as many demographics as possible, but you can't do that in a single game. Believe in your franchise, iterate upon it, remind people of it by releasing new works, and the fanbase will grow in time, instead of letting the IP stagnate, letting its fans move on to something else, and driving both veterans and newcomers away by releasing a $40m flop every 5 years.

I slowly became more and more interested in the lore and was in love with the designs and overall aesthetic of everything 40k. But without enough full games with stories to get me invested in that I will play over an over again... well... I just haven't been given a chance to truly become obsessed with it like I have been with Mass Effect, Elder Scrolls, or Fallout universes. Every time I find a game thats fun, it's always missing the ingredients that would make it something great. Warhammer needs games that can be not only a good entry into the universe, but something that gets people invested in it. If they could make a large scale epic RPG with a killer story, with a giant warhammer sandbox to play in, that would do it, for sure.

Honestly, what you said in the end is precisely why Warhammer has kept going strong while all others have fallen or faded. They choose not put the future of their franchises behind a single project. They have their hands in tabletop, books, video games, and normal board games. Hell, they are even starting to dip their toes into movies and TV. And there are ongoing projects going on in each. Many of them will not be good, most will be bad. But the bad ones are virtually never strong enough to destroy the IP and the good ones really stand out among others in the industry. They keep on growing many smaller legs so the IP stays afloat even if some fail. The centipede keeps going when it loses some legs while the might giraffe, majestic and tall, is crippled and dies when a single leg is broken.
One other thing Warhammer does really well is by not having any one character be the focal point of the franchise. Unlike IPs like Halo and Mass Effect, whose primary narratives and core identities are based almost completely on the sole player character (Master Chief and Commander Shephard respectively), Warhammer makes an effort in saying that the universe will keep going even without their input. They make a habit of making the universe bigger than the majority of characters themselves. Only an extremely small number of truly godlike beings are capable of changing the universe by their actions alone, people who make Chief and Shephard look look like specs of dust. And trying to make a game where you would fill their shoes is an exercise in futility. Those same characters are mostly faded into the pages of history, little more than myth and legend.

The whole legendary edition fiasco coming directly after Bioware abandoned Anthem was what finally persuaded me to personally blacklist EA. If they ever release anything worthwhile again - and that's a pretty big 'if' - then I'll pirate it.

I'm agree with your point, Game companies these days put all focus on Big budget AAA games, maximum profit but if it fail it will damage the IP.
Game industry could use more middle budget games, like those WH games, if these game fail it wouldn't hurt the bottom line so much.
In fact, because it's a middle budget game, fan would forgive some bugs or design flaws.
However, these middle budget games doesn't bring millions of profit that shareholder want, so Game companies ignored them.

Your comment at 6:30 encapsulates me perfectly. I never knew much about 40k until I played Space Marine and I've delved deep into the lore ever since. Haven't had the courage to start playing the table top, since, well, I'm not made of money, but I'm still open to the idea. I'm very excited to play Space Marine 2 and didn't expect it to get a sequel.

I feel the same way about the Ace Combat series tbh. Strangereal is just too good of a universe to be left unexplored. I wouldn't even mind a shift in perspective, shame that stealth spin-off set in Sapin never got out. I'd enjoy it even if it sucked as long as I got to see more of the world I fell in love with.

I would love - LOVE - to play as one of the tankers fighting on the ground during the Monolith mission in AC7. Or even as one of the remnant forces during the push to Shilage Castle!

I think Naval or even a Submarine game would work. Just as long as as you don't play as the Oseans. They're not exactly known foe being subtle.
On the flipside, playing as an Yuktobanian or Erusian (Hehe Torres) sub commander would allow for way more story freedom.

A lot of people must, because I always find Ace Combat mods in games when I start digging for content. Hell, even Cities Skylines has Ace Combat content modded into it so people can build and govern in that world.

You mentioned War for Cybertron in the video. That game is my favorite game of all time. Transformers is my favorite thing ever, and it’s like you said. It’s a window into the universe I love the most. A well made window at that. Fighting on the ground during the Cybertronian great war was something I always dreamed of as a kid. And WFC delivers so well. Cybertron is represented amazingly in the game. The combat is fun and fluid, voice acting is top notch, story is fantastic. I wish other franchises I love could get games on par with WFC. But they probably never will.

    *warps in from the future*
And you can add to the pile a Twisted Metal-esque racing game featuring orks and an RTS featuring the *other* Warhammer fantasy franchise!!

As a fan of warhammer for almost a decade now and 20 books into the Horus heresy, that ending was incredible. You 100% make great points and I love mass effect too and wish they had more that really encapsulates the original 3 games. Awesome vid man
