Never played Rogue Agent myself, but the weirdest thing I remember about this game back in the day is that the critic reviews were universally meh, but the player reviews on every site I checked were generally really positive. I don’t know if people just loved the concept or had gold tinted glasses, but that divide made me think this was some kind of underrated gem…..GUESS NOT! Edit: 25:43 Oh neat. Thank you sir 😘

In the span of the 26 minutes of this video I've gone from never hearing about this game ever to tearing up at how dirty it got done, the game that was on paper sounded amazing.
"The enjoyably edgy tone of a Linkin Park album" cracked me up. When you talked about the how the soundtrack blended the levels together, it made me think about how great it is when a game perfectly pairs music with level design. Halo 3's "Warthog Run" comes to mind. Music/sound might be the most important part of a game's identity to me - Done well, it STICKS in my brain for years, and I associate it with specific memories. Makes me wanna cry when audio isn't used to its full potential.
Oh this is gonna be good! Haven't even thought about this game in years. Had such a cool concept but fell so flat compared to Agent Under Fire and Nightfire.
Incredible video. As someone who has worked in the entertainment industry, when my friends are complaining about video games, how bad they are, how they were rushed, how they didn’t live up to the hype, it’s always difficult for me to articulate how this type of stuff happens. This video needs to be watched by everyone in the industry currently as well as people who are enjoying the games/the consumer. Yes, people do pay lip service to the idea that it’s not the developer‘s fault it’s the publisher, but still there is this undertone of entitlement and anger that makes its way to the people on the ground floor who are creating these games. Imagine that you spend years working overtime dealing with crunch, to then have the money people Force you to release a subpar product. Not only did you see your creation get tarnished but now you get to sit by and watch everybody trash on your work. The talent behind this game is undeniable. And there’s no way that it was the intention of the development team to release a game that people would not enjoy, much less live up to its namesake. This video capture is the fundamental problem with the gaming industry currently.
Yeah, it’s really upsetting. At the end of the day it’s a product, and if a product is bad then people have every right to complain. However, it will almost never be the intention of the developers and probably not their fault, but they are unfortunately the easiest targets, not the publishers who barely seem to have any human employees and only care about money
I played the DS version of Goldeneye: Rogue Agent. I liked it, because I was starved for FPS and played everything I could get my hands on. I do not want to revisit it to see if it was worse than I remember.
It was groovy to play the multiplayer during our lunch breaks although the experience was quite frustrating for me as the shoulder buttons on my DSi functioned quite poorly
I played both Xbox and DS a lot but I played the DS version WAYYY more. I honestly think I just did bot matches by myself most of the time but being able to play a decent FPS in the backseat of my parents car was game changing
Super powerful ending, it really speaks to broader themes about systems as a whole, not just limited to the one that brought about Goldeneye Rogue Agent. I'm not coming up with some epic, new, groundbreaking hot take, but it's always worth mentioning and reminding ourselves, that we as a society tend to reduce people that inconvenience us as being malicious actors, when in reality we probably would do the same things in their places.

This video shows the reality of creative expression and the obstacles creator have. Another one I think would be Alpha Protocol. Makes you wonder what we gamers would have played if they got complete backing like Spec Ops The Line.
I agree. I think if someone did a newer version of the game with current tech and built around that on-paper rogue agent-goldfinger vs doctor no, you would have something with some legit punching power that people would absolutely love. Like imagine how much more creative you could be, and furthermore I could definitely see ways you could adjust the gameplay and animations to help give character to the protagonist in game and out of game. Less single slap and taking a human shield to throw, and more cinematic takedowns like doom, character moments to help flesh out the dynamics and personality traits. Not just told “oh…this person frequently resolves matters with brutality.” Have maybe a flashback or prologue mission where we see him going from calm coordinated and skilled stealth and silent take downs straight out of the mi6 playbook to a heightened level of brutality after being shot by dr no, with dirty fighting, savage executions, and taking known gadgets like the laser watch and using them as part of those executions. Burning faces with the laser watch, gouging eyes before snapping their necks, garotting or ruthlessly stabbing with a stealth kill, even just caving in someone’s skull with the butt of your weapon repeatedly, or shooting their kneecaps before headshotting them. Granted what I suggested there would all raise the age rating for certain, but considering you are a bond supervillain, brutality should come with the territory. Just my thoughts. I know I lack the skill and understanding to make something like that, but it would certainly make for something I would be interested in.

Paul DaMeo was a very close family friend of mine. He was a neighbor and his daughter was best friends with my older sister. I used to always go over to their place and play ps2 games with him. Unfortunately he passed away a couple of years ago. Thank you for bringing him to light as he was a great man and a great writer.
2004 Xmas for me. While I was disappointed I still have fond memories of this. I also. Got NFSU2 that year. The nostalgia I have for Ea from that era is unrivalled.
Goldeneye: Rogue Agent has always been the very first game that comes to mind for me whenever someone asks "What's a game you like but everyone else hates?" I've always loved its style, the "THUDDATHUDDATHUDDAPEW" of the Commando rifle, the death traps which make the levels themselves have a certain level strategic consideration especially in multiplayer, and yeah, the soundtrack is a bit samey, but I always thought it went pretty hard (to be fair I was already a fan of Paul Oakenfold's music like Ready Steady Go) and I occasionally re-listen to it to this day, many an afternoon was spent in the multiplayer just like the original goldeneye 64 for me. Even despite me agreeing with most of what this video has said about it, I'm not surprised in the slightest there was such talent behind it despite me not knowing until now exactly to what extent of talent was behind it. It's one of my most replayed games from the 6th gen even though I agree it's somewhat repetitive.
I somehow had a feeling that EA became "Evilcorp" with time, slowly, only starting to get covered by red moss in late 00s. But it seems roots of that evil are much deeper.
This was one of the games I considered part of my childhood. Looking back, it was extremely frustrating to play through this Campaign, and even my brother and I weren't too impressed with the split screen multiplayer, as we often split screened PS2 shooters like Nightfire and Battlefront 2. The shooting in and of itself felt pretty good and there was something about the style of the game that just felt kinda cool, which was probably why I kept playing it despite its flaws.
Aaah rogue agent... the unofficial death of the 007 game series (followed by the lackluster "From Russia with Love" and whatever the hell Activision tried to do afterwards.) Please IO-Interactive... do this series justice. Also, I only briefly skimmed for the time being, but did you give your thoughts on the multiplayer? Weirdly enough - when I went back and captured footage of the splitscreen, we genuinely had fun with some of the maps. The traps they used in the arenas were a great idea that I'd love to see return in the future. And I loved how they recreated so many iconic areas from the film series for those maps too. Still crap compared to Nightfire or Goldeneye - but better than Everything or Nothing's absurd CCTV camera brawls
@@Simok1234 I can and I will. Goldeneye wii wasnt very good either. A COD clone with motion controls using the goldeneye name almost as shamelessly as rogue agent did.
Finally, someone mentions MoH: rising sun. That was such a good game with great split screen co-op. My dad still plays it on the 20 year old PS2 he's got
Of the three Medal of Honor games I had as a kid (Frontline, Rising Sun, and European Assault), Rising Sun was the only one I could never get into. I'd play and replay the other two over and over, but I'd never go past the second level in Rising Sun, and I have no idea why.
@@simonandsimbagaming frontline was the best single player, rising sun had the best co-op split screen and European assault was the start of the downfall when the first couple of COD games came out
I remember getting this game and being so excited. This was the first time I remember noticing how.. bad a game felt. It wasn’t my dumb kid brain interpreting bad design as difficulty anymore, it was now at the point where I recognized, “oh this is not good..”
Love it or hate it, the missions' settings, the dual wielding system, and the music was actually really good. One of the best OSTs in gaming history IMO. I love this game, but I can see why people who were a bit more mature back then wouldn't. I was only about four years old when I played this on the PS2.
The fall of Turok Evolution was fairly similar, promising, outstanding trailers, talent, passion, only for it to come out a mess needing a year or more of work. That'd be a fun one to cover too.
i think the lesson here is one that honestly it has been revealed time and time again to be the case: marketing and execs should have more accountability, and there should be more regulation about their actions
I have memories of playing and enjoying rogue agents campaign on game cube when I was probably around 10 or so, but I mostly remember loving the split screen mode against my brother and a few friends. The weapons/ maps/ and sounds in the game can still be easily recalled and my favourite part was probably the insane dual wield weapon combos they'd let you do
As you highlight the thing that really killed me about Rogue Agent as a kid was the fact that up to that point I absolutely drooled over the annual Bond releases for the variety and style they had. It's wild thinking back now just how many years I spent looking forward to, playing and being absolutely wowed by annual Bond releases. I hoped it would go on forever. New games, new gadgets, new exciting vehicle sequences and over the top set pieces. I can't say I remember the exact moment I realized the ride was over but man do I miss those games so very much.
I WAITED SO LONG FOR A VIDEO ABOUT """"GOLDENEYE""""""", thank you so much. I enjoyed it, completed it, and even loved the multiplayer, but I clearly see today why it was mediocre, especially compared to Nightfire and Everything or Nothing.
Two of them actually. The Rogue Agent team and the original Goldeneye/Perfect Dark team, Free Radical Design. If I was the CEO of EA, execs would be getting fired left and right for this insanely terrible mismanagement.
Nightfire and everything or nothing make up about 80% of my playtime on the ps2. The last 20% was WWE and vice city. The old bond game were peak Bond in my very bias opinion
I never thought I'd actually see this game brought back from the depths. And amusingly, I recall having a blast with it when I first tried it. That was of course... years ago. Many... many years ago. Watching it now, I'm glad you have the tenacity to dive into this because I wouldn't know where to find my copy even if I could start my PS2.
Thanks for this! I remember always thinking this was a cheap cashgrab, so nice to be shown it was at least something conceived with real heart. Shame on EA, quelle surprise
Yesss dude, Everything or Nothing was actually my first ever intro to James Bond, I'd never heard of him before my grandma bought me that game. Love it.
It really sucks because imagine if they had given the Everything or Nothing/Nightfire treatment to the real Goldeneye. All the levels and features of Goldeneye with the advancements of Nightfire. Would’ve sold gangbusters.
Cool Ray - a Rogue Agent vid! It's honestly one of the definitions of a "7 out of 10" game but subjectively it was fun as hell. I remember having a blast with it back in the day. The game's menu/main theme track gets heavy rotation in my 'game and anime OST' playlist to this day. Game was alright - menu theme is far better than it has any right to be.
I have always loved the concept of this game. Playing the beginnings and experiences of a James Bond signature henchman. I just wish it would get a good team behind it, a good budget for it, and enough time to make it how it should be. Hopefully IOI does a good job with their game.
Hopefully they do and I faith in that, But what is so sad is that we never had the chance to play evil, Cybernetical enhanced version of James Bond, playing 006 like character would have been epically awesome!
From Russia With Love on the PSP is one of the games of my childhood. That game held my attention alongside Battlefront 2's galactic conquest and Burnout Legends, so it ranks highly among my nostalgic games.
Glad to see another upload from you after all this time. Great work as always! I’d be totally down with the black lagoon vid. Even if you make it completely off script from your usual review methods. Just make it a passion project, since I know you hint at how much you love the series in your other videos.
Great Job, Raycevick! My first exposure to the James Bond Series was "Everything Or Nothing". Years later I've become something of a Bond Fan myself *Willem Dafoe meme*. Always felt underwhelmed about "Goldeneye Rogue Agent", but couldn't clearly articulate why. After watching this video and learning what's happened behind the scenes, I felt like the main reason is the dissonance between the lackluster gameplay/gamedesign and the genuine talent of the development team. P.S. Of course EA today is much different than EA in mid 2000s, but the fact that EA rushed this game's development cycle truly makes me feel very familiar tendencies. Cheers🍸
I had a great time playing splitscreen multiplayer with friends in Rogue Agent. One shot one kill on the Golden Gun Fun House was great. But Nightfire and Everything Or Nothing is far better, especially singleplayer.
never saw one of your videos before but I'm impressed at your honesty, so many video essays end with the surface level conclusion that their favorite franchise was ruined by "bad management" or "corporate greed" and I'm sure there is an element of truth to that, but admitting that the people were just doing their jobs and you'd probably do the same was a breath of fresh air
Maybe my taste is simplistic, but I actually loved Rogue Agent as a kid. Granted, I had no FPS experience outside of WW2 shooters. I might dust off my Xbox and see if it is just nostalgia.
MOH Rising Sun is a deep cut, haven't thought of that game in years. Spent a lot of hours playing split screen multiplayer with my brother and friends, a lot of good memories even though in reality it wasn't that great a game.
I really must be the only person in the world who didn't hate this game. Like i don't remember this game being bad. And I thought the Golden eye power was cool.
I remember getting this when I was 14. I enjoyed it until I got more FPS games haha. I got stuck on Hoover Dam and never went bsck Played the multiplayer a lot. Did enjoy the Omen gun a lot
I remember a friend of mine urging me never to play this, and then explaining what the name Goldeneye meant in the context of this game. I thought it was unfathomably stupid, and really transparently done just to cash in on the name. I never knew how much talent was behind it, or how much promise it once had. Nothing sadder than what could have been.
EA was always a trash publisher but back in the 90s and 2000s they had to release good games. Today they have a monopoly on sport games (Madden, FIFA) so they basically can make trash and get away with it. Let me remind you that even back in the 90s evil was a trash company closing down studios and ruining devs. They screwed over Richard Garriot back in the late 80s.
You ranted a game because it is a way too basic shooter inspired from Halo 1. I'm gonna be honest, the Rouge Agent is not a bad game, and I accept if somebody not like it but heavily not if someones says it is a bad game because of its weird "bumped up aim"-system or because it is a repetitive shooter. This game was obviously made to be different, and it's because they wanted make a game for everyone, with nice graphics (It does look good on a CRT), well done maps and encounters which were alright and sometimes unique, with not a big amount of weapon, but to make it more "cool" they added dual wielding, which I think was fun to use. There were special weapons, and I think they were cool, and you found them cool as well. The gameplay wasn't about shooting and also wasn't a hard one, but this game is more like a hack 'n slash as a shooter instead (this explains the actual great ragdoll physics, but sadly bodies last short till they despawn) of a fixed hallway through map shooter, giving you limited amount of ammo in your weapons forcing you to either loot, either switch, either run out from ammo and use your basic pistol as a weapon. The game gives you "super powers" including wall hack, shield, etc. with limited use, as it needed to charge and i think it was cool, and unique idea. The soundtrack was boring, but it actually was not at the same time, and i explain why. The musics you played in were only played per map parts making you hear them a lot less, and were also only made, so you will be tuned to kill enemies, so I think it wasn't that bad for if they only played in map parts, which were they. I actually forgot the executions in the game, but trust me it was cool and satisfying, and through the game you will unlock an ability that can turn of the enemies weapon and can trigger these remotely. The characters and the story, well if not well made, but it isn't actually the main part of the game so it is acceptable. At least we get some cutscenes, even if they aren't the best, trust me, i saw worse than that. Oh and you played the game on easy, which I can tell from the game footage, and it was obviously boring you should try hard or if I remember correctly there was a hardcore mode, the experience will probably change, and probably you will too.
@@Raycevick Yeah you gonna tell me enemies with p90 damages half of your shield from 2 sec of burst, I checked the damage and I'm pretty sure you are faking this one
@@justagamerhun2228 What clip are you using for reference exactly? If it helps, the footage is a Hard Playthrough on OG Xbox (marked by slightly lower quality, and mostly no auto-aim), and a 360 Backwards Compat playthrough on Normal. In both cases, the game plays the same, Hard mode doesn't add any new gameplay dynamics, it just bumps numbers slightly, and Rogue Agent needs a lot more than that to make its combat model meet the standards of games at the time like Halo.

Then I played it and it was cool but it was just alright, kinda slow, kinda plinky, multiplayer had traps which was cool but not much else. Learned something about expectations if nothing else.
This and Agent Under Fire were the first games I bought from EB Games. I have countless memories of Agent Under Fire. All I remembered of Rogue Agent is duel wielding, the Xenia fight and the multiplayer map on the Golden Gate bridge. I honestly hoped this video would show that it was better than I remembered and worth playing, but instead... Great video, fantastic work!
I grew up on Bond games. 26 now. I remember it. The feeling of playing each new 007 game feeling special. Favorites are Goldeneye, The World Is Not Enough Nightfire, Everything or Nothing, and From Russia With Love.
For some reason I love agent under fire for a very VERY specific reason. When you played multiplayer (local) you could grapple AND when your friend would be sniping it would have this really satisfying red line of sight
Well Ray. After viewing this video and nightfire(both when it released and again after this one came out) I have ordered everyone of the early ps2 era bond games on ps2. I’ve only ever played agent under fire so I’m pretty excited to see what each one brings to the table.
I remember enjoying the game mainly for the gameplay and multiplayer but I specifically remember at the back cover of the case and seeing a screenshot with an unreleased gun and wondered how that version would be
The epilogue here is so interesting. "I don't think I would". Placing yourself in the shoes of a higher up, marketer or executor of some sort is an interesting dilemma because in the system you exist, rushing a game in order to make room for the next one is indeed a valid decision, albeit immoral to the hard workers on the payroll beneath you.
The 007 games were some of me and my brother's favorite games growing up. I'm sure my judgement of Rouge Agent was clouded since I was so young with limited FPS experience but the sound design and animations of RA are so memorable to this day.

I swear, what happened to FRD is SO fucked up and is one of the absolute saddest stories in game development history.
@@arnox4554 Hopefully they get a proper swan song since THQ Nordic brought 'em back, they're even planning a new TimeSplitters game for real this time.
@@lord_razur I certainly hope so... We'll see what happens.
I played the shit out of both, but Timesplitters was in a different stratosphere
You absolutely deserve the praise for the Splinter Cell "reviews" and such Mr CN!
I have played that game, i loved it. But i was circa 12 years old. So i remeber it fondly. Ive always wondered what happend to it, as i never finished it^^
i loved the game because dual wielding. That was the entire reason my brain loved the game as a 10 year old.
Your Splinter Cell videos are the best.
I fucking loved the game!! It was amazing to me! >:( it is a gem, i personally dont like goldeneye 64 or other james bond games, but rogue agent captivated me and i loved it so much.. and seeing this guy rip into something i loved so much and shitting on it and crying, hurts man, it hurts
My (least) favorite part about those stupid wall hack railguns is when you were camping in the air duct hidey hole using the wall hack ability to just kill me no matter where on the map I was. 🔨🔨🔨🔨

The Timesplitters series really doesn't get enough love. I only found the series years later through emulation, and had a great time with all three games.
I've only recently gotten into the series,And i'm kinda confused on the plot so far yet i love it
@@Mephiles343 I imagine you're referring to Future Perfect. I tried to understand the plot a few times and still didn't get it so you're not alone there. Regardless I'm excited to see TimeSplitters getting some much deserved love and appreciation. Enjoy the rest of the series; it's a great one!
@Night Roug3 no I mean like timesplitters 1,I only got through the Egypt level so far,This game is tough lol
@@Mephiles343 Ahhhhh I gotcha. TimeSplitters 1 is a fairly difficult game. Especially if you're not used to the controls and how the game works. Tomb still confuses me; as it's a giant maze lol. About half or so of TS1s levels are confusing to navigate at first but they become easy over time. One tip I can give you is learn the enemy placements, armor locations, and story pickup locations. Once you got those down then it gets much easier. Still a hassle at times though. Good luck!

In the span of the 26 minutes of this video I've gone from never hearing about this game ever to tearing up at how dirty it got done, the game that was on paper sounded amazing.
They definitely put their hearts into the concept art, I'll give them that. Lots of personality.
Makes me wanna cry when audio isn't used to its full potential.
check out hellsinker and metal black
I always say a movie/game isnt complete without a great OST. Some may think not or dont care for scores but its true.

E.G. Assassin's Creed's faceless glitch
I do not want to revisit it to see if it was worse than I remember.
it was good enough for a portable multiplayer shooter you could whip out during class downtime with friends
It was groovy to play the multiplayer during our lunch breaks although the experience was quite frustrating for me as the shoulder buttons on my DSi functioned quite poorly
Metroid Prime Hunters was a far better option for a portable arena shooter.
Okay now we REALLY need retrospectives on the good 007 games you mentioned at the beginning. Everything or Nothing is tragically underrated.

The fact that this game was given priority over Timesplitters is unbelievable. Free Radical deserved so much better.
Learning about the development, impact, and history of games is always a topic I'm interested in. Especially fps, horror, and other action games.
Paul okenfield is the reason why i loved this game so much. Audio wise even to this day the soundtrack holds up.
The AR4 Commando is probably the beefest sounding and has the most exaggerated reload for most video game Armalite rifles
3:16 Using the word "vanquished" showing a Vanquish is a nice touch
Aaah rogue agent... the unofficial death of the 007 game series (followed by the lackluster "From Russia with Love" and whatever the hell Activision tried to do afterwards.)
Please IO-Interactive... do this series justice.
Don't downplay GoldenEye Wii my guy.
From Russia with love was a sick game!
How can one man be so wrong about Everything or Nothing?
@@TheBanana93 It was too short, I felt I wasted my money, just like that time I hired a hooker.

Odd Job’s Hat in Nightfire = The spartan laser of bond games

Finally, someone mentions MoH: rising sun. That was such a good game with great split screen co-op. My dad still plays it on the 20 year old PS2 he's got
Of the three Medal of Honor games I had as a kid (Frontline, Rising Sun, and European Assault), Rising Sun was the only one I could never get into. I'd play and replay the other two over and over, but I'd never go past the second level in Rising Sun, and I have no idea why.
Looking back, it's a pretty bad game. But split screen coop was amazing
@@simonandsimbagaming frontline was the best single player, rising sun had the best co-op split screen and European assault was the start of the downfall when the first couple of COD games came out
It was dull and controlled poorly.
I remember getting this game and being so excited. This was the first time I remember noticing how.. bad a game felt. It wasn’t my dumb kid brain interpreting bad design as difficulty anymore, it was now at the point where I recognized, “oh this is not good..”
Good lord, same. I think that was one of my first instances too.
The theme to this game is the best thing about it, and it has been living rent-free in my head for over a decade.
Yup. It's up there with Black Ops 2's. Hidden gem for sure.
This was one of the first games i played on my PS2, the other being Burnout 3. Love to see this!!
I loved Everything or Nothing, especially the main theme. What an absolute banger.
And the co-op in that game was great
this was my favourite bond game from the era.
Rouge agent first misson Is super nostalgic for me
I never knew the game´s staff was that goated, holly shit. EA burned down a dream team.
Two of them actually. The Rogue Agent team and the original Goldeneye/Perfect Dark team, Free Radical Design.
If I was the CEO of EA, execs would be getting fired left and right for this insanely terrible mismanagement.
Dude, a Splintercell lookback from you would be perfect. I would love to watch that.
Nightfire is one of the best games ever made, I use to do lan party's in late 2000s with friends (GameCube)
Good video as always, see you again around Christmas or so!
About damn time! But for real, Thank you for another amazing piece of content, I know it takes time to produce greatness
@Angelo Griffith I thought this game was bad even when I was a kid, but I was a huge halo fan.

I remember a friend of mine urging me never to play this, and then explaining what the name Goldeneye meant in the context of this game. I thought it was unfathomably stupid, and really transparently done just to cash in on the name. I never knew how much talent was behind it, or how much promise it once had.
Nothing compares to the feeling of waking up to a new Raycevick video.
Edit: heartbreaking story of the game that could have been
You ranted a game because it is a way too basic shooter inspired from Halo 1.
"Oh and you played the game on easy"
This is what I get for playing the entire game twice on Hard mode...
@@Raycevick I do have the game for PS2, and as soon as I saw the damages i tried it myself. bruh

I don't think I've ever been more obsessed with a game I didn't play, the dual wielding, the you're the bad guy elements, the "intense violence" (I had no frame of reference, was a sheltered kid). Then I played it and it was cool but it was just alright, kinda slow, kinda plinky, multiplayer had traps which was cool but not much else. Learned something about expectations if nothing else.

Right back at ya bro!
Been waiting a while for this one!
The 007 games were some of me and my brother's favorite games growing up. I'm sure my judgement of Rouge Agent was clouded since I was so young with limited FPS experience but the sound design and animations of RA are so memorable to this day.
