We are Linnea and Akela. In May, 2020 I purchased our 2016 Ram ProMaster, Togo, to become our full-time home. With this van build, I am using my stubbornness and drive to show individuals that they, too, can convert a campervan BY THEMSELVES and ON A BUDGET, with a lot of learning, rolling up the sleeves, and getting to work.
Our goal here is to inspire individuals to chase their dreams. To break from societal limitations and live the life they truly desire. And, to GET OUTSIDE!

Just a word to those who install their own solar! I live in Tasmania Australia and a camping trailer( they call them caravans here) was traveling down the highway and their solar panels came off and caused an accident killed three people in the car behind them! Don’t rely on just tape! Linnea has been very wise to attach with screws as well and also consulted with a friend who is an installer builder to get more advice. Good on you Linnea. Hi AKELA!
Please make sure you have things secured...so no one else has to loose their lives!

People only tape their panels on? Holy shit. :o
One thing people might want to consider when attaching panels to the roof is that contact between aluminium and steel can cause corrosion in certain environments. Someone with more experience with metals might want to chime in on this, as I am no expert.

I would also add that it's a good idea to use lock nuts on the panel mounts. I used the standard nuts and lock washers and noticed a screw and nut laying on top of my van one day and found that it had vibrated loose on the panel bracket. I took everything down and changed all of my nuts to lock nuts.

This panel can put out close to 100 watts th-cam.com/users/postUgkxOqI2yqX0XVrhR2BMJciTWrHJpG8FhJyg when positioned in the appropriate southernly direction, tilted to the optimal angle for your latitude/date, and connected to a higher capacity device than a 500. The built in kickstand angle is a fixed at 50 degrees. Up to 20% more power can be output by selecting the actual date and latitude optimal angle. The 500 will only input 3.5A maximum at 18 volts for 63 watts. Some of the excess power from the panel can be fed into a USB battery bank, charged directly from the panel while also charging a 500. This will allow you to harvest as much as 63 + 15 = 78 watts. If this panel is used to charge a larger device, such as the power station, then its full output potential can be realized.

I've been loving watching you build out your van. Your can-do attitude and resourcefulness really gives your videos an awesome energy. I'm very comfortable dealing with basic wiring (DC more-so than AC), but solar and charging and all that is a bit more unnerving to me. I believe I feel the same anxiety that you've mentioned with wanting to do it correctly/etc. So, I am definitely VERY appreciative of this video series. You go, girl! 🙂

It is very impressive how you are learning on the fly. Now that you are a pro at wiring you should also sound like one. AWG stands for American Wire Gauge. That is simply the size of the wire, the diameter. To say 14 AWG you simply say 14 gauge. I have enjoyed watching your van build. You should be very proud of yourself.

You have install your 12 Volt DC power system and it looks like a pro did the work. Outstanding !!! I would shorten the solar panel cables ( storing the cables in the way you did could make a magnetic field and that could damage your 12 Volt DC system) I do not know what you do to pay the bills ,but I think you have the ability to do anything you want to do. Which is a great thing to have , it will help you in life.

You screwing that buss into your battery box reminded me of when I worked for the phone company. One of the guys installed an emergency phone in an elevator and when he closed the elevator doors, the screws gouged the stainless steel door on that side. Very expensive install for the phone company that day. Thousands of dollars to replace that door. It reminded me to pay attention not only if I ever installed a phone in an elevator, but to be careful installing a phone set on a wall in case there was a pocket door. Something phone techs don't deal with much anymore residentially.

Really awesome how you are figuring things out! As you grow the power of your system it always helps to add cut off switches between your components so you can swap/repair stuff, like a switch between solar panels and MPPT, a switch between your battery and everything else, etc. And a multimeter kit can really help you diagnose any problems. Super cool work!!!

very well done!. one thing I noticed that concerned me was the last power connection between the battery and inverter was at the battery. in my earlier days as a mechanic I had a bad connection inside a battery...very rare occasion...and when the positive cable was reconnected the battery literally exploded and know florescent light tubes out of fixtures above me and my boss that were on the ceiling 20' high. when I can I always make my last connection at the inverter away from the battery. that way I'm not looking right down over the top of something that might explode... and please use eye protection especially with electricity. safety glasses at least. young lady you are really quite something else... great work and research.

thanks for the video! I will be doing this with a travel trailer but I will be using a kit from shopsolarkits :) seeing you take all of the guesswork out of it makes me feel like this will be a breeze. My trailer already has a DC panel in it for all of my 12V systems so that saves me on figuring out how to set up a fuse block. Oh, side note, if you ever have to remove those panels in the future, use butyl tape instead of the 3M, it will last you a lot longer and its strong stuff (working in construction, we use it on metal roofing applications and when installing mobile home windows).

    Quick point. 4 awg is said " 4 -A,W, G "
    an acronym for A=American W=wire G=gauge
Also, connect your inverter to the buss bar(s). Wired straight to the battery it isn't fused

Btw, my camping trailer has smooth aluminum painted roof and four 160W panels there hooked just using 3M VHB tape. It doesn't have any additional holes, routed cables in from one of the roof air vent.
My van has through roof mounted rack which holds my panels and same kind of enclosure as you've got for cables.

I have just one suggestion: Your inverter doesn't look like it's protected. I don't see a fuse on the inverter. There should be a 150 - 200 amp fuse between the battery and the inverter for 1000 watts. The photos on the Renogy website don't show a fuse. Maybe it's inside. I'd add a fuse, just to be safe.

So happy to see your solar video tonight...something nice to see before another Monday! Looks like you are definitely secure against any leaks in the roof, but I'm just wondering if you've given any thought to perhaps wanting to upgrade to additional panels in the future...I don't know how this stuff works but it seems like getting to your solar connections would be quite an instrusive chore! LOL. IDK, maybe you're good with the two...I can't help feeling like I'd want to add more potential input in the future. Either way, great job on weathering the "shatter storm" and getting all these devices connected and running...and you lights work! Woohoo! :-D

I made sure to leave enough space on my roof for a third panel if I want to upgrade. Similarly, the set up of my battery on my wheel well allows for an additional battery if that is something I am interested in the future. Other than that I would simply buy a larger inverter and call it good!
Thank you so much for the questions and support!

The only suggestion I have is to run the inverter off the buss bar as well. Just keeps things neater and more organized. But other than that you did a great job on the electrical.

Love this channel! I’m no guru but my intuition is telling me those panels could use some sort of air dam, also maybe some covers that your able to lock down onto them to protect them from things like hail.

Thanks! They are actually designed to withstand a lot as is, so many times covers aren't needed. So far so good!

Thinking of where your batteries are in relation to the route of wires from the panels and a space to house and connect the charge controller, inverter, fuses, and bus bars is a great starting point to sketch out a diagram for your plan of attack

Good info, Thanks. My learning process is best served with a simple diagram on paper connecting everything. So, you're explanations didn't help me too much, but I like watching your determination and suggestions. I'll be back on the road myself soon... your youtube vids. help! Aloha.

OMG thank you for posting this. Installing my solar panels and hooking everything up have been on my to do list for awhile..but never had the balls to do it. Because It’s so intimidating! But you made it perfectly clear and it was easy to follow along. Again, thank you! you’re such a badass! :D

Great video! I’m struggling with my 200 W system and this helped lots

  • @Maxid1

Just replaced my 80W panel with 2 200w panels on my camper. That's as much as I wanted to put on 10 gauge wire 12v system I've got. My next trick is going to be a stand alone 48V 500w panel on the back part of my roof with actuators to allow it to track the sun. It will feed an Ecoflow power station. This will power anything that's power hungry starting with my laptop to whatever. I'll also use it to night charge my primary system when necessary. The 500w is bifacial so it'll be interesting to see how it performs on a totally white roof. I'm even thinking about actual reflectors on the roof to scavenge sun power.

put your bare ended cables into ferrells, prevents possible shorts at the terminal and the connection loosening after driving around.

It's funny how cluttered wiring becomes! That 200W is a good start for your lighting, and I hope the squirrels leave you wires alone! Nice prod. switch to put the positive wire through that hood properly. Safe travels!

This is a solo project! I have plenty of people in my life that would be happy to help, but I really wanted to do it completely solo. I knew that doing it alone would force me to face a lot of discomfort, and really learn all of the in's and out's of the project :)
