- Leonard Bernstein: Serenade for violin, string orchestra, harp and percussion.
London Symphony Orchestra; Antonio Pappano, conductor
Janine Jansen, violin
Live from Barbican Hall, Barbican Center, London - 2017
First time I've heard this work. Lenny never fails to be interesting. As usual he skates effortlessly between the old and the new. Well played.
I love the abandon and full blooded musicianship of Janine Jansen
0:00 Phaedrus: Pausanias
7:10 Aristophanes
11:57 Eryximachus
13:39 Agathon
20:45 Socrates: Alcibiades
Jansen’s performance is by turns tender, crackling, fiery and soulful while the London Symphony Orchestra under Antonio Pappano are smartly alert partners.
simply beautiful
Definately Bernstein's finest composition.
I just read a lengthy 2018 interview with Bernstein's eldest daughter Jamie, and she said "Serenade" is her favorite of her father's compositions. I'd never heard of it until now, so I had to check it out on YTube. I'm not sure what to think right now, I think it warrants repeated listenings!
Duet between violin and cello is splendid.

I have to say this is one of the few works by Leonard Bernstein I like. Most of his music leaves me cold, but there are, as always, exceptions.
I wish I could go to america and escape stalin :(
Very nice
bagus sekali ! matur suksma
Quelle écriture….. merveilleux….
Wasn't Pappano recorded a Bernstein symphony cycle? But I can't find that anywhere.
J'aimerais bien savoir comment Bernstein l'aurait lui-même dirigée...;
beautiful engaging work, quite deep compared to most of Bernstein..
am I crazy or does Bernstein nod to Tchaikovsky, Glazunov and Brahms in the first phrase?
He also quotes "Maria".
Best Violinistin!!!❤ the world and best Stradivari! Baron Gutmann 1707!❤
Impressive playing indeed, expressive, but seems to me somewhat rough and strenuous in places. After all, it must be very difficult piece when one wants to play it with such an extraordinary expression like she does.
Damn, she really blasts it! Definitely did in a bowhair or three, while playing with the finest-spun elegance when it's called for. I'll bet Lenny would be smiling.
