in all honesty, it was not that he was that great, it's the teams he faced imploded. The 49ers were super strong because of their coach and owner who spent tons of money. Montana was VERY lucky to be on that team, it made him look much better than he actually was.

I just watched the Chiefs v. Broncos game from 1994, and Montana was throwing plenty of long passes. His offensive style, the West Coast offense, was designed to be short passes. It moves the ball down the field and chews up the clock.
Headline is misleading. From what I heard him say, he regrets not playing another year with the Chiefs as he had another year on his contract and missed playing.

Went to a notre dame game some years ago. Campus was packed with people because they were playing USC with Reggie Bush. Joe Montana showed up and the campus crowd parted like the red sea. He was wearing blue jeans and a flannel shirt. No one hassled him for autographs they just respectively gave him room and stared in admiration. It was like a god walking through.

I regret him retiring too. The first game I went to was Christmas 94 at arrowhead. Joe Montana is my hero.
His next to last game. I remember them losing their wildcard game against the Dolphins on New Years Eve the next week. I never thought anyone would ever come close to him at QB. I was wrong.

You can't say that. The rules of protection were laxed pre 2008 for receivers and QBS... You're probably too young to remember but QBS (Tom Brady, Peyton ect) use to get absolutely blasted. Genetics and luck factor into it too, it's like saying jerry rice, Otto Graham, Darrell Green ect wouldn't be able to play long in the era they did, when they did lmao

Football changes over time and you have to play with in the rules that exist at the time when each qb played. You can't make claims who would have played longer. Brady may end up with 8 or more before he retires.

@Rodrigo Ruiz steve young was great but it was mostly injuries that kept him out for 2 years was the real reason why. Joe was playing his best football starting from the 1988 playoffs until leonard marshall knocked him out of the 1990 nfc championship game. Joe won back to back league mvps and back to back superbowls. Had marshall hadnt knocked him out there is no way steve young gets the job. At age 36 after missing 2 years and looking more brittle and plus steve young winning the 1992 mvp sealed the trade.
Leonard Marshall from the Giants was the real reason why Joe was traded. I'm surprised Montana wasn't paralyzed from that hit.

I'm a lifelong Broncos fan...so John Elway was always my guy, and later on Peyton Manning. With that said, I've always loved and respected Joe. He was the guy for a long time and I truly believed he was the GOAT for most of my life. However, you'd have to be delusional at this point to deny that Brady has surpassed him. I say this completely unbiased since I am not a Patriots or Buccaneers fan. I know a lot of people hate Brady and say Joe is still the GOAT, but let's be real guys...Tom's career is literally Montana's, Aikman's, and Dan Marino's combined. Tom has won with 2 different teams, he has 7 rings, and he's been to 10 superbowls. He's won 2 superbowls in his 40's. It's difficult to compare guys across eras, but Tom has literally been playing for 21 years. The early 2000's weren't nearly as soft as the league is now and Tom won 3 in that era including the last back to back. So miss me with the narrative. Montana also played for super stacked teams for most of his career and he had Jerry Rice and Walsh. Not trying to diminish him at all, but teams back then didn't have the salary cap or free agency issues the league has now. People seem to conveniently forget that though when it comes to making these comparisons.
Like him or hate him, nobody has won Superbowls in their 40's except Tom. No QB has won with 2 different teams except Peyton and Tom. No QB has stayed elite at the twilight of their career except Tom. Brady has twice as many playoff wins as Joe, 3 more rings, and he did what Joe couldn't...won it all with another team. With all that said, I believe Montana is still the 2nd best QB ever and I doubt any of these modern guys will ever pass him even in this pass heavy offense-friendly league. It's okay to admit someone surpassed you in a sport. That's what sports are all about guys. Someone might dethrone Brady one day too...it's just the nature of the game.
The main reason many people still have Montana as the GOAT is due to his flawless record in the SB. Not only 4-0, but his performances were flawless. Brady will never be able to match that, obviously even though he has more wins. NFL is such a team game that defense is a huge factor in these games. KC will find that out on Sunday.
There is truly no clear cut GOAT due to Eras, I look at Johnny Unitas as the Babe Ruth of Quarterbacks...no many how many of his records or how many more Rings others get...he influenced the NFL like Ruth did MLB...without them both we don't get the other great Quarterbacks so they are both the GOAT in their respective sports due to their influences in making both Sports popular as they are.
I watch Joe take more Brutal hits in one season (Leonard Marshal) that any one quarters in the last ten years has taken period over the same time span.
I mean he did have the overall GOAT that he was throwing to almost his entire career... Brady turned tons of nobodies into somebodies...

What Joe wanted to say: I wish the league had protected me the way they do him.
Even with added protection, Joe was slender and small. The hit that killed his 9ers career was legal today, I think, just unlucky, resulting in 3 separate serious injuries.Just got blindsided.
Luckily Joe was smooth on his feet and shifty and a good runner. The only rule they had early in his career was 'in the grasp'...now ...it's bordering on absurdity. It's why GOAT talk is silly

I feel it's one of the biggest reasons I put an asterisk on Brady's last 8 yrs or so. QB's lived in Dog years in the NFL before the massive rule changes that took place post 2009. Brady is now allowed to function like a regular adult who would only be considered just slightly over-the=hill in his over 40's, rather than a fossil like he would be in previous generations.
His greatest asset at this point is that they can't hit the QB anymore and he's, effectively, not taken a critical hit in 10yrs.

The league is very different with defensive players that are much more athletic and violent. If the new rules were not in place there wouldn't be a single quarterback left standing to play. So maybe Montana needs an asterisk next to his name because of the modern day restrictions on salary caps and free agency that teams never had to worry about in their time. It's all a matter of perspective. Each great player has to make the best of the time they play in.

1) The difference is that the rules today are specifically geared to help the longevity of the Quarterback and enhance the passing game by opening up the middle of the field (defenseless receiver rule). So it's safer and easier to play Quarterback than it's EVER been
2) There were no Quarterbacks left standing in the OLD era.. and that's the point. They've wiped away about 80% of the liability from being Quarterback. Now if a QB is hurt in a sack, it was probably an illegal tackle or accident.. that in itself is insane
3) I would argue that's it's MUCH easier to build franchise teams in the modern era of free agency and to add system players (for much cheaper) in today's era than it was in the 1980's or early 90's. Teams today can get league MVP's at bargain basement prices because every organization is trying to help each other maintain it's salary cap. There's no purging of teams like you see in Baseball, sure, but it was never like that in the 80's anyway. You HAD to build through the draft which meant teams needed at least 5 yrs or so to develop their system.

JOE MONTANA IS THE ABSOLUTE GOAT
Montana is my favorite QB ever. He won 2 Super Bowls before Jerry Rice was on the team.
That being said, Brady is the best. I don't think we'll ever see another one like him.
Maybe if montana retired at 39 he could have had 2 more superbowls. Brady won his fifth at age 39 so they were pretty even at that age

Had Brady played in the 80’s/90’s he would have been beat down like Joe and would not play this long. Brady has been well protected throughout his career.
Same for Montana, if he played in the 60's he would not be so great. And so on and so on,. We could go back to the early 1920's what other excuse you got?

@@Koreabrad It wasn't close to Montana's but I loved watching him on the field. Never knew what he was going to pull off. Loved the entire Bear's team that year. If Jim had a more supportive coach he would have went further. He was exciting to WATCH.

I watched Mac in all his college games at BYU and, no kidding, he was the best college QB ever (just ask Eric Dickerson.. 1982 Holiday Bowl (Miracle Bowl) 21 point comeback with 1 minute to go!!)

Agree. And even if it’s just for longevity’s sake. In a few years he won’t be ABLE to be so elusive, so he will need to build on his QB IQ, accuracy, and game management. Don’t get me wrong- he excels far above the average QB in these areas already- just not like a Hall of Famer yet. If he does these things, he can last a long time and become one of the greats.
He's learning to read defenses but that doesn't help you if you don't have an O-line.

Yeah, you know they are not allowed to touch the golden boy (Brady), the Ravens complained for years about 'roughing the passer' calls that kept Patriots in the playoffs. Like deflate gates, spygate and tuck rule wasn't enough help. At least Montana has no asterisk by his legacy.

To me, Montana is the real G.O.A.T. He never lost with a 4-0 record, never threw an interception, 2 Superbowl MVPs, and played in an era where the qbs and receivers had no help as far as safety.
Everyone on here is saying Montana played in a tougher era then Brady which is true but people forget Bradys first half of his career was played in the same era

@@joejakubec9708 What year did rules about hitting the QB get updated? 2008 Defenders on the ground cannot roll to tackle QB, 2010 The one step rule added, 1987 Two Step rule added. 2011 Slaming and applying bodyweight to sacking a QB in the pocket. Not long ago, QB must take a defensive posture before he can be hit on a turnover.

In the days when Montana, and Bradshaw ,... played QB's, they were hit hard, all the time, with no rules to protect them.
But since the late 90's and even more so today, QB's might as well just wear skirts.

@@deangoings He had above average regular season stats for the era he played in and very good stats in the playoffs/SB. In 4 super bowls he threw 9 TD's against only 4 INT's, 233yds/gm, 59% completion, and 112.8 rating (4th highest in SB history).

@@deangoings He definitely had the best defense in the time he played, I just think he deserves more credit than he gets. He went toe to toe with Roger Staubach the first time they played Dallas and outgunned him by a wide margin the second time. Those SB's weren't exactly defensive battles either (21-17 and 35-31). They had at least the 6th best offense in the league during all their SB winning seasons and in 1979 actually had the number 1 offense (all led by Bradshaw).
It just suck for Tom knowing his idol, Joe Montana, doesn't like him at all. Everything Tom does is hit with a backhanded compliment from this guy.

I liked Chief Joe way better than I did 49er Joe. I took it as an insult when Joe was rooting for San Francisco over KC last years Super Bowl.
What is mind boggling is that some of the Greatest Quarterbacks are from Pittsburgh yet the Steelers never reeled them home; Johnny Unitas, Joe Montana, Jim Kelly, and Dan Marino. Back to Joe. Chief Joe was one of the most underrated QBs ever. That 1993 year was exciting to say the least. Sadly they killed the Warren Moon led Houston Oilers.
Unitas was drafted in the 9th round by the Steelers but they never gave him any snaps and released him
