Hey all, hope you enjoy Part 2 exploring The Abandoned & Cancelled Disney animations! Similar to what I posted in Part 1, in order to best avoid too many “You forgot about…” comments, I thought I’d quickly share the criteria I used to build this episode:
    1. Had to be a FEATURE LENGTH animated film, as the list of shorts would require an entire series of its own.
    2. Only films that will never see the light of day and that aren’t currently in the works for an alternate version, or were simply reworked into a similar film aside from 1 or 2 exceptions where the story is particularly interesting and rich with history.
    3. Also keep in mind that some "cancelled" Disney Feature Animations just don't have enough history or available visuals to tell a proper story, I include a few quick ones near the end as a "bonus", but some films are just as simple as "Disney almost made (insert here) film...and they didn't", which aren't the stories I am particularly interested in telling, as plenty of "list/top 10" videos have already done that.

The only reason reason Disney are churning out live action remakes, is so that they can maintain IP ownership. There are laws around IP ownership that say you have to do something with the IP within a certain amount of years otherwise you lose the IP rights.

Like if I wanted to make an animated version of 'a 1001 Arabian nights' and have the Aladdin story in there, as long as I don't make it obvious I'm copying the Disney version (like include a blue wizecracking Genie) there is sweet FA Disney could do to stop you.

I know this comment is old but my thoughts exactly. Toy Story didn't succeed because it was animated in 3D, it succeeded because it had the Disney spirit Disney itself was lacking at the time. With the exception of the Disney movie, a lot of the core elements of what made Disney films so great were missing towards the end of the 2D era and Pixar encapsulated it perfectly.

I'd say Toy Story's visuals have aged somewhat well. The humans look uncanny and Scud looks odd, but otherwise the movie is kind of a technical marvel for 1995. Pixar mostly stuck to non-human characters to avoid the uncanny valley and didn't attempt human visuals until Finding Nemo.

The classic 2D look often requires more complicated movements. That's why Disney went with the lumpy looking 3D characters, because they can be moved like the noodle arm characters of the 1920s and 1930s. Also, the backgrounds are easy to make with 3D; especially, when using real locations. As such, they most assuredly sabotaged their 2D studios with The Princess and the Frog, which was obviously worse than Tangled, and used Tangled to move the studios completely into 3D.

I'm personally glad that ENG turned out the way it did. Disney already did The Prince and the Pauper with Mickey, and it was much better than Kingdom of the Sun could have been. Plus, I've always seen ENG as Disney's Anti-Disney movie, basically becoming a parody of Disney tropes right down to Yzma's transformation into a small kitty mocking Maleficent and Ursula's final boss forms in their respective movies.
And While I'm on the subject, I think a perfect sequel to Roger Rabbit would have taken place in the late 50's, and have Roger and various other toons coping with the advent of television and the death of the theatrical short. They kind of explored that with the comic book series, but I'd love to have seen a stronger take on it.

I think also another reason Spielberg didn't like the Nazi story for the 2nd Roger Rabbit is because he did that 1993 movie Schindler's List which showed us how disgusting and horrendously evil Hitler's Nazi regime truly was and using the "Wacky Nazis" premise seems to be in really poor taste.

There's actually a really good, really thorough video essay called "Treasure Planet - Disney's Biggest Mistake" by BREADSWORD on here that breaks down what happened during the making of Treasure Planet, and how it was absolutely gutted by the Disney execs in order to justify shutting down the 2D animation studio once and for all. Long story short, Disney spent a lot of money on making Treasure Planet, and then sabotaged its release through bad marketing, poorly chosen release date, virtually no toys or merchandise, etc. (Side story - I'm lucky enough to own a set of 4 lithograph prints they sold at the theater where I went to see it as a kid, and two of the stills they chose were bad, considering how many beautiful scenes there were.)
When the expensive movie inevitably flopped, the Disney execs turned around and used it as "proof" that they needed to scrap traditional animation and move on. I STRONGLY suggest checking out that video essay, because it is delivered with a great amount of research and care, and really highlights (imo) the distinction between the Disney Company (which is downright evil, for so many other reasons) and the people who are actually working on and making the art we're appreciating here.

“An old, fat, dead movie director?”
You know, it’s very ironic because many people have forgotten what Walt Disney was doing at the time when he made animated films. He made them to compete with some of the big names in film, especially those with live action.
It’s like he wanted to make the Old Hag from “Snow White” be just as scary as Dracula or The Mummy or the Evil Queen’s transformation sequence to be better than the transformation of Dr Jekyll and Mr. Hyde at the time.
Or the fact that he wanted to create strength of the whale from “Pinocchio” to be like that of King Kong (1933). Or that he tackled themes in “Fantasia” that do with space, the domination of the dinosaurs, and religious themes that would be seen in live-action such as “Jurassic Park,” “2001: A Space Odyssey,” and “The Tree of Life” decades later.
The fact that whoever that executive was that made that comment about Hitchcock seem to forget that’s what Walt, himself, was making at the time.

No wonder why Disney went downhill during the early 2000s and allowed Dreamworks and Pixar films to become more well known than their own Disney Animation films.
The company lost their balls that they had in the 90s Disney Renaissance.

Apparently Marie was going to be the main protagonist of The Aristocats II and even given a love interest who was a male kitten. She was also going to be voiced by Tara Strong.

I can’t believe “Home on the Range” and “Chicken Little” got made, but these didn’t.

I remember thinking Home on the Range was fun, but it definitely felt like a pre-Renaissance movie in the vein of Oliver and Company or something.

It was also one of the reasons Micheal Eisner lost his job as Disney CEO.

Interesting. I've heard of the original story that would've been Kingdom of the Sun before it became the slapstick comedy known as Emperor's New Groove.
I liked the Prince and the Pauper concept. Would've been able to see how they'd rework that after 1990 already explored such a concept with two Mickeys in a 24-minute short film.
Seeing and hearing David Spade with Owen Wilson would've marked a brilliant arrangement. Although it never happened, Wilson got something better in 2006 with Pixar.

I'm still bummed about the cancellation of Gigantic.
As for the Zootopia easter egg, I think it would be kind of funny to see if Zootopia get another blue-ray addition/update in a few years to retcon "Giraffic" for an animal-based pun about "Raya & Last Dragon".

I really enjoyed The Emperor's New Groove as it stands today from my childhood, but Kingdom of the Sun actually does sound like it could've been a whole lot better as a genuine musical tale and Disney's interesting take on the Prince and the Pauper story set in South America.

As much as I love Emperor's New Groove and it was a integral part of my childhood, Kingdom of the Sun sounds absolutely amazing and I wish they would have went with that instead
