Bit late to the party here but I've tried a ton of different tutorials including this one. I get the same result as you at the end but no matter what order I plug the lead into the car and open the software I only ever get the hardware faulty message and cant load up the software. Is there anything else i can try?
After successful installation of the software. You connect the obd to the laptop and to the obd port on the car then launch the software on your laptop. It will ask you to switch on the car - I think turn key to position 1 without turning engine on, then it will be able to pick up the data from your car's computer - make, Vin number etc, and from there you will be able to proceed to scanning the components... That's the procedure that has always worked for me

Also I have a 2000 528i which was equipped with the round port under the hood and the port under the dash. Any insight or info would be greatly appreciated.
