    Great video and explanation. I was hoping you would have explained in greater detail how the pump down function works utilizing the liquid line solenoid valve. Thank you for your time and effort.

      Energize solenoid/open.
      Close high side svc valve.
      Hold down contactor.
      Watch guages. When low side very low, quickly close off low side svc port

    Your explanations ,and illustrations are so easy to comprehend , you are a great teacher of the trade, I have a quick question what is the difference in the system design from your cooling AC in your home versus a walking cooler or a freezer ,what is the main difference that you're able to bring those temperature down to minus zero versus your home that you're only able to bring the temperature in the low sixties at best? , thank you... so much for teaching all of us the HVAC trade.

    Excellent video. You should also follow up with a video on line set sizing for such a walk in. Why size is critical to keep velocity up for returning oil and so on. Also, you may want to explain a suction side accumulators on a walk in and it's importance.

    Thanks a lot bud for keeping it simple yet still providing thorough explanation on the system. Question : where would or where could smoke such as cigarette smoke seep into the HVAC system?
    I ask because I can smell the cigarettes Smoke since the smokers have decided to move next to the outside system

    Outstanding video. I’ve been working as a frame to finish carpenter for the past 15 years. This summer, I’m working for my buddies HVAC company. He’s got tons of work and is a little short staffed. I started doing some basic research on the refrigeration cycle and immediately realized how little I actually knew about the process.     hi, Thanks for your clear explanation of Refrigeration Cycle. I have one rather important question I would like to ask. Your Airflow where does the Air come from. Is it normally a Close Loop System where the Air is constantly re-circulated by the Evaporator Fan in the Fridge, or is Fresh Air Intake going on so that the Evaporator Fan is constantly pulling Fresh Air from the Outside and blowing it through the Evaporator Coils inside the Fridge. Also if it is not a close Loop System and the Fresh Air is constantly being sucked in from outside , is it vented out as it is recirculated inside and replaced by a fresh stream of air. Thanks

    Where abouts do you check the superheat and subcooling on a cooler? Also what are normal pressures and tempertures of a cooler using nu22.? I dont usually do cooler work but had to go to one call and the high side was about 225psi and low side was about 50 psi.

    My friend said his walk in cooler only iced up in hot days? Any ideas what’s wrong with it? We are in Louisiana, hot days means the ambient temperature is over 90 F. Thank you so much

      Yes they do because of the difference in the temp that the walk-in box is at. This can vary much more than a building ac unit.

    Excellent video as always! If you have time I have a quick question: why don't they just put a vaporizer on the inlet to the compressor (like you do on the vapor side of the gauge set) to ensure that only vapor gets to it. Thanks for the vids!

      That would put too much friction on the system as it will continue to circulate through it and as always, the cost of manufacturing, thanks

    The liquid receiver is used to hold the refrigerant charge during pump-down cycle. I disagree that the refrigerant leaving the receiver is a sub-cooled liquid. The receiver contains both saturated liquid and vapor refrigerant. In order to get sub-cooled liquid to the TXV, the receiver needs to be by-passed. That's assuming conditions are favorably in the condenser.

      Not usually but there certainly could be one though. This setup is only used with the txv also, thanks!

    It all depends on what type of evaporator it is, if a center mount, AT the Evap..should be 4 to 5 degrees superheat,,At the compressor, scroll type 10 to 15, hermetic comp..20 to 35 per HEATCRAFT....

    In the condenser super heat and saturation and sub cooling exist while in the evaporator liquid/gas and saturation and vapor gas exist.

      Check if there is a local county technical high school where you can go to school at night for an intro course as they are the best quality typically and are very reasonable in price.     What makes a walk in box so much colder than your average house? It must be that its really well insulated?
    And how does a freezer reach freezing temps? I'm sure it works on basically the same principal as AC but what makes a freezer different?

      They are either designed as a packaged unit from the factory with cap tubing to make sure that they will always have at least some superheat or they have a receiver and a txv except the txv would try to maintain 6-8 degrees of superheat when down in temp. The air handler continues to run to melt any ice or may have electric resistance. They are also designed for this function and have a different refrigerant to meet this need. Refrigerants are designed to have different boiling points like r-22 at -40 is 0 psig. Keep going, learn all you can!

      If you get called out to a walk in box like this and its blowing say 70 degrees. What would be the first thing you'd check? I happened to see one doing exactly that a while back at the local store and it was several days before they got it fixed.

      The first things are to make sure both coils are clean and that there is good airflow. Next make sure the compressor is actually on and then read the pressures to start to examine whats next, thanks

      What is the normal temp that you want to see in a walk in box? I'm thinking like 35 degrees maybe. Many times stores don't keep walk in boxes quite cold enough.

    Can I replace a 55/5uF+/-5% 350/370V with 55+7.5MFD=/-5% 440/370VAC?

      No, you cannot replace the fan motor part of the capacitor from a 7.5 to a 5 mfd as this will likely burn the motor out. You can however just use the compressor 55 mfd part and jump the common to another capacitor that is just 7.5 and use this for the fan though, thanks!

    In the liquid line the state of refrigerant should be high pressure subcooled liquid.

    ||I disagree my brother when you said you can not put a DISTRIBUTOR on a cooler box. Yes you can Connect DISTRIBUTOR. It depends with type of EVAPORATOR you have on your Box, for instance if you've Multi-pass EVAPORATOR coils you would use a DISTRIBUTOR & EXTERNAL TXV..
    -Remember when a DISTRIBUTOR is fitted to the EVAPORATOR, an Externally Equalised T.E.V must be used.
