I played this game long time ago in a pirate Ninja compilation. On one disc you had This game, Tenchu 1 and Ninja: shadow of darkness. This game is resident evil/parasite eve with samurais. I really liked it. Every time you defeat a boss, you get a new blade and with it new techniques and fighting style.
I liked that one hit sword that doesn't let you parry... The one where you pull the sword from the sheath for an instant strike and then return it to the sheath immediately
ninja shadow of darkness was a fkn hard game. never beat it without cheat codes.
Janky underrated games? Cy-Girls was a whole "I have no idea what's going on" as a PS2 game.
It's pretty good, it gets more fun when you get more weapons and skills. Replayed this a lot back in the day
I'm convinced Kotaro is a distant ancestor of Joe from Samurai Cop

Fantastic game. One of my favorite PS1 entries, and gets really bonkers the further into it you get.

This is a great game, i always considered it to be the Ninja Scroll of video games. It has many similitudes with the original movie.
Oh shit, I loved this game. My dad had a copy of this game and I had no idea of what it was and just tried it. Loved the bizarre plot because its so different from what you'd expect from a samurai game. Music is also great

@@hodoupmer I did, and it looks nice on the PS1. But we know that they were making when the PS2 arrived, so they skipped to next gen to make it.
You did actually get a new weapon after that boss, there is an item menu.
I always saw this game in stores but never had the money to buy it, this is truly one that I REALLY wanted to play. In Europe it was called Ronin Blade which I feel is a much better name.
Sounds better but not accurate as only one character is a ronin while the other is a ninja.

I laughed when Matt made that Resident Evil joke. Mintues later, a dead law enforcer vomits a parasitic creature. The lesson here is: everything is possible in a japanese videogame.

I saw this game in a store a long time ago, picked it up, and didn't play it for almost 7 years. When I finally did last year or so, I was legit blown away because this game was sooooooooo close to hitting the nail on the head and potentially being a lowkey pioneer of modern 3D action games. Soul of the Samurai fucking slaps.

Why be so stingy, put Blade Warriors and Tactics in there as well. Just get the whole Series in a collection.

@@thegamingprozone1941 Pretty much yeah, just Warlords. I'm guessing there are some copyright hurdles that Capcom still can't get over when it comes to Onimusha 2 (Jubei being modelled after a late Japanese actor) and 3 (French actor Jean Reno). Not sure about Onimusha Dawn of Dreams though.
@@MrFutago87 Blade Warriors wasn't all that great (it was essentially an Onimusha Super Smash Bros styled game). I remember renting that from Blockbuster a loooong time ago. I never played Tactics though.

this game gets insane in the later levels, there as a bootleg soul edge in the plot , miyamoto fucking musashi is a optional boss in the game , you can get new swords ,moves and even new costumes , also the girl's levels are kinda different with different bosses , DNOpls did a full playthrough of this game some years ago , he knows ALOT about this game , you should check with him for more info , matt
If it came out before onimusha, then it wouldn't be a knock-off of onimusha.

I wondered why i remembered this game... I looked it up, yeah this is the game where I'm still confused on if Kotaro is supposed to be Kojiro Sasaki or not considering his first boss carries monohoshizao (the nodachi named "laundry pole" in other samurai games), performs the tsubame gaeshi (swallow cut/swallow return/swallow reversal... this technique is called a lot of things, but it generally has the word swallow in it and it's Kojiro Sasaki's iconic technique)... and the optional boss fight is against Musashi Miyamoto on Ganryu Isle so I'm very confused even to this day especially since it's been about 20 years since i played it.
it's just a fictional fiefdom in feudal japan like tenchu or like how raccoon city is a fictional city in america. some of the characters are probably inspired by historical figures, most notably musashi.
Kotaro is The Chosen One, he lives under constant attack. XD

You should check out Way of the Samurai. That game, and it's sequel, are two of the best samurai games of all time.
I completely second this. Fantastic games that don't get enough love. The first would be easier going in blind because of the actual tutorials, but 2 has that glorious hammy voice acting.

Play Akuji The Heartless.
I liked it better than Onimusha. It gave off the Tokugawa era japan feel much better. The village and its various environments felt like home. I really liked the sword fighting too, very realistic. Very similar to kendo. The storyline, some may consider cheap, but I thought was very touching. It wasn't very long and drawn out either. I'm surprised an anime wasn't made after it. It reminds me a lot of Ninja Scroll.
I loved this game and when onimusha was release on ps2 I always thought as a kid it was a spiritual successor to this game …..my age corrected that error lol

I'm digging this games soundtrack. Another weirdo PS1 game to look out for is Fade To Black. It was the sequel to Flashback ( for anyone who remembers that game) janky 3rd person action and one of the first games I'd ever played that set the standard for annoying escort missions.
That intro for some reason reminds me of Tenchu BTW have you ever covered Tenchu Matt? Edit: I checked 😂 yes he did.
I love this game, but playing with Lin is a bit more fun, Kotaro always felt way too slow, even with his other sword that are "faster".
Damn, now want to watch ronin warriors again.

YO! I've been looking this game since i forgot the game name when i played this as a kid. And i don't know that it have english version since i got with my friend are Japanese version back then.
