Sorcerous Stabber Orphen was a popular anime in '98, enough that Orphen ranked high in the Animage popularity rankings, very chuunibyou with the arm magic and all that. But it came out just as headbands and fingerless gloves were on the way out in character design, so every time I see Orphen I just can't help but think about that outfit.
Anyway, that 90s dub quality is so... distinct, isn't it.

I just went to check and sure as hell the 90s anime looks tons better than the recent adaptation. It just looks more earnest and 90s gritty like classics like trigun or berserk. Probably woudl have enjoyed it back then.
I had a friend who would not shut the fuck up about this anime in 2009. I know very little about it and assume he just wanted to fuck the MC.
the anime is pretty good though. The opening has a nice jazzy song to it, and the story is genuinely interesting and fairly unique in my opinion

Overall, kind of an underwhelming game, but there were some fun and interesting parts throughout.
This game is so anime as hell here. The dramatic cutscenes to its over the top action sequences. This game never seizes to amaze me. Please play more of this game.

Orphen was a long-running series of Japanese fantasy novels. It got an anime in the 90s (to which this game is more or less a tie-in) and another one recently, which is generally less well liked but is at least covering the full story. The main character is at least theoretically a wizard loan shark.

I played that one! It was okay but, iirc, the members you don't use don't get XP so swapping in a new summon causes a huge difficulty spike.
The anime is very wild, when my brother noticed the first plot twist , he just stopped watching it.
Also, Orphen looks like the son of Kyo Kusanagi and Sol Badguy for me. I can't get that out of my head.
And, now, I'll never get the image of Kyo Badguy out of my head.
I loved this anime when i was a kid, which led to me playin a lot of this game as a good, so much nostalgia
I really enjoyed this game as a kid. Probably because Orphen was the right kind of edgy. I actually do remember the story for this game being pretty solid...Well I thought it was solid 20 years ago at least...

I rememebr playing this game and then, to my sheer surprise, finding out that it was based on anime some time later via said anime randomly being played on adult swim.
I do recommend the anime, its pretty fun and interesting.
I had this on the PS2 and I was too dumb to make it past the opening area. Or this game is obtuse garbage. Maybe a little of both.
Back during the PS2 days the vibes of this game felt so unmatched with music and sound effects, its def a game of the time. Ive always wanted Platnium to go balls to the wall with this IP
I remember this being my first ps2 game, but I had no memory card budget, so I just replayed the first levels over and over again.
This was the first PS2 game I ever owned or played because my mom bought it for me for Christmas. I had never heard of Orphan before but my mom knew I loved anime with spikey hair characters. It actually wasn't a terrible game, I enjoyed finishing it.

I remember renting it as a child and beating the game multiple times. I would love to see someone else go through this interesting but strange game.
This was my first PS2 game alongside Wipeout Fusion. It was quite ambitious with all the routes, finishing them all was quite a challenge.
I kinda want to dust off my PS2 and play this now...
Warts and all, I genuinely very much enjoy this game -- The plot didn't make much sense and the three tales don't fit together in a way that works narratively, but each of them were full of some genuinely nice story ideas. I also loved the subdued musical score, the artistic style, some of the more atmospheric moments, and honestly I thought most of the voice acting was great - Quinton Flynn in particular is genuinely perfect for this role! Also, the Anime cutscene that kicks-off Mar's storyline (portraying the character of Rani) still gives me chills, as it's haunting, beautiful, artistic and genuinely rather sad, despite being only about 20 seconds long.

The characters are so shallow they're just walking tropes! What a bunch of unbearable, one dimensional, paper thin pieces of shit. The game itself looks as by- the-numbers as the terible writing. Just awful... please play more, I'd love to see it! :D

I had bought this for mega mega cheap from gamestop years ago, played it for 20 mins and let it gather dust before finally getting rid of it eventually.
it was too terrible and it's so sad cuz orphan is a cool anime that got a new season like recently as well!

I suppose Dark Cloud, Level-5s first game has a similar look and is also an action game though more action rpg if you want to play something similar, though that's a roguelike town builder as well
I used to play this at my friends house with no memory card and we always went on different story paths every time.

For a PS2 release game this looks real crisp and fun to play. It definitely has a janky charm.
I got this game at PS2 launch but didn't have a memory card so those early cutscenes are burned into my brain.
Keep playing this game, it's not long, under 10h you beat it. It aged like milk but the anime shorts hold up very well today (even more if you consider Deen's remake of Orphen) and the OST is very good IMO.
I wonder if he'd bother sticking around for the true ending, though...

Man, this was the only PS2 launch title that young me wanted to play, and I tried SO HARD to like it. This game fought my affection the whole way. That title screen just fills me with dread, it is just so bad.

Gods, I played the fuck out of this game way back when. Every single line of poorly delivered dialogue and every janky animation is seared into my brain.
A friend had this, me and him were the only 2 ppl in our friend group to get ps2's, and this was one of the first ones we played, we thought it was good but very weird with the combat. I only found out few years ago that there was an anime too. Also, turns out orphan is voice by same dude who does Axel from KH and Raiden from MGS.
I got my PS2 in the first restock months after launch, and this and Armored Core 2 were my first games (slim pickings). The main thing I remembered about this one was "THE HAND OF PYRO!" "THE HAND OF PYRO!"

Not sure if anyone mentioned this but the game is kind of...well I'm not sure if it's a sequel but it's based off of the manga and anime series Sorcerous Stabber Orphen. Basically it's Slayers, but more serious. The titular protagonist Orphen was a former member of Tower of Fangs, an organization of sorcerers. His real name is Krylanco and his sister upon grabbing an enchanted sword, turned into a dragon and flew away to parts unknown. Orphen abandoned the order and took up his alias to go find her. Along the way, he picks up an apprentice in Majik (who for some reason is called Magnus in this game) and Cleo, the damsel-in-distress love interest.
The character Selphie is one of the game-original characters. She and the other two alongside Orphen are the only playable characters in battle. Cleo and Magnus are stuck as AI-controlled partners. The former is useless since all she does is attack with a little puppy that takes too long attacking and returning to position and the latter simply mimics whatever spells Orphen has equipped.
And yeah, a lot of recognizable voice actors did the dub here. Quinton Flynn in I think his first ever video game role long before he did Raiden and Axel, Paul Eiding does a couple background voices, Jennifer Hale as Cleo, etc. None of these guys voiced the characters in the anime though.
The manga has two anime adaptations, the second of which came out a few years ago, so it's not exactly forgotten

Holy mother f*** lollllll you are NOT playing Orphan. This game was one of my 3 first games I got for my ps2. FFX, Maximo, and this. This was the only one of those 3 I never beat...
Orphen was one of the first games I got with my PS2 (alongside Jak & Dakter, and Onimusha). Suffice to say, I consider it the weakest of the three by far.

Yo Matt, from what I can tell you have yet to experience " Touki Denshou Angel Eyes " for the arcade and ps1. It's a fighter that 2d and 3d characters in it. The arcade is hard as hell, I dunno about the ps1 version tho. Hope to see you try it out sometime ✌
The voice cast in this game is stacked though. PS2 has this weird charm about it. Like my guilty pleasure Crimson Sea 2.
There needs to be an Orphen DLC pack for Return of the Obra Dinn. Instead of uncovering a sobering tale of hardened sailors and unfathomable monsters, it is learning the antics of ridiculous anime characters and their goblin sidekicks.
I think this game would make for an interesting playthrough. Maybe nab Liam along for the ride.
I had/ still have this ps2 game. I never really got into it because I thought the combat sequences were a lil wonky.

Damn this game looks like a Dreamcast game on a decent day, but animates like an N64 game on a terrible day! When the ps2 was big in it's heyday, I always wanted this game, especially since I was simultaneously heavy into Anime, but something about the box art seemed not fully enticing! Despite what I knew way back then about Americanized import box-arts, I figured that even for an Anime licensed game, this box wasn't "Exciting" enough to sell me, and thus never took the bait! I was always tempted to nibble every time i went to GameStop for a while since it was always $!0.00 or less, maybe even as low as $1.99 at one point, but that especially repelled me since 8/10 times a cheap as hell game was a crappy one! So said So done, and my instincts were pretty right from this presentation on the Flophouse! Also regarding my 8/10 crappy to good cheap game statistic, I have had my good fair share of 2/10 times a cheap as hell game was solid gold in my eyes, and a sleeper hit to many, due just to lame-Assed "professional" critics who didn't see the bigger picture in those games! That one IGN (i think) reviewer of PS2's "God Hand" hating the game cause he personally was a trash gamer/reviewer was a great example!

While you'd think I wouldn't care - what with Orphen being a just pretty okay anime I watched decades ago and barely remember - but It somehow still bothers me that they changed the voice cast for this. I suppose the original English voice cast was more impactful than I gave them credit.
