- Run-flat tires offer definite benefits, but they might be wrong for you, especially if you value comfort above everything else. And if your vehicle does NOT come with a Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS), then don't even think about run-flat tires as an option. I explain why.

I had Goodyear run flats on our C6 Corvette, they were noisy, harsh riding, and when I had a flat, none of of the Goodyear or Chevy dealerships in the Chicago area would fix it. Thank God for Discount Tire, fixed it, rebalanced it, and did not charge me anything. Replaced them with Michelin non-run flats. Best thing I ever did for my car.
i had a bmw 330i 2018 with run flats then i swapped them out for cheap walmart tires. The difference was huge, way softer ride, smoother, accelaration increased and over all it felt quieter. I notcied a huge miles per gallon increase by 7mpg. The car felt more "gummy" on the road and asobred all the road imperfetion . The steering was not as sharp as runflat, but still loved the ride with tradational tires.
I work as a semi-self employed security guard on graveyard shift and I only run, run flat tires on my car. I have aaa membership but my job takes through and in some seriously dangerous parts of Seattle and Tacoma and since all my gear and vehicle are self supplied turning my back to the streets for even 5 minutes to change a tire or sitting for 3 hours to wait for a tow from aaa can easily result in serious injury or death. I don't have tpms but if I have to replace a rim and tire it's worth the 400 to 500 if it means I get to home in one piece at the end of the night. Fortunately my personal work vehicle hasn't been shot up yet, but the company car I was driving did get Swiss cheesed about a month ago with me in it. Also why I only do v8 motors now, the camry I was driving has no get up and go and delays before accelerating when you floor it.
I have run flats on my car which was factory installed. I just had nail Puncture my tire, the dealership told me I need new tire and that I cannot put a patch on it due it can rupture.
So I went to local tire shop and he put a heavy duty patch which cost 40 dollar.
Better than $500 for new tire…..
So stay tune let’s see what happens after a week or a month.

I have RFT and I think they have improved greatly over the last few years. I used Falken F510 and they are quiet and have safe handling also in the wet. I will never go back to normal tyres again. One puncture and I am stranded in whatever location I pass through. That’s a scary thought especially at night in the middle of nowhere.

I hit a pothole in San Francisco the size of a crater and dented the wheel and hub. Run flat saved me where a fix a flat can and regular tire would not have. Run flats all the way for me.

I recently bought x3 30i & it has run flats. Yes the ride is stiff but at the same time what i love about it is the braking force & stability. I agree with his point that if run flats are replaced with conventional tyres , it wont handle as well because the suspension is tuned a certain way keeping in mind the tyre size & the vehicles weight. I have bridgestone alenza
The Suspension will adjust itself… if you switch the conventional tires…They say it’s not true because they want you to by Run Flats a high Price..Just think if put 500 lbs on your Trunk.. The Suspension May go down a little but will adjust from the weight and not Brake down,Except if you put weight over the limit the Suspension supports..

I have run flats on my vehicle and the ride is still pretty smooth. You can feel the bump a little more when going over a speed bump; but that is about it. A couple of months ago my back tire went flat on the way home from the beach which is about two hours thirty minutes away i never noticed until I was already at home. This was also on the interstate doing around 70 to 75 and the temp outside was around 86 that day. Tire held up even without air. I will say this though that if a run flat sidewall breaks down and shreds while driving you are going to feel it as it has happened to me when they wore out. BTW the tire that went flat on my way home from the beach is a Pirelli.
How did you not notice the flat tire? Did your TPMS not give a warning?
@@joashmathew7454 It would have; but I had another rim on the car that didn't have a TPMS so the light was always on at that point. Run flats also dont make a lot of noise when flat like normal tires to. They do however still make some noise; just not as much as a normal tire.
I had a rear left total loss of tire pressure…I was close to home so I drove few miles on the street at about 45…the car felt really squirrelly to me…patched with no issue…just glad I didn’t have to drive fast…those were the Goodyear OEM runflats…I’m switching to Michelin all season ZPs soon.

A full size spare tire weighs more then the extra rubber on 4 run flats. Depending on the size of the spare tire of course
True. Also with how reckless people are driving nowadays I do not wanna ever change my tires or repair em with the fix it kits on the shoulder of the highway. Just because the probability of getting rammed at 70mph by another car is low doesn't mean its impossible. I got run flats and never had to worry about a catastrophic tire blowout on the highways ever again.
I got a set of Bridgestone Driveguards last year for my Chevy Volt. I loved them so much, I am purchasing a Set of Driveguard Plus today for my ford focus electric. Neither car comes with a spare tires due to the fact they are both ev's. So a runflat tire is an essential choice for me. The Driveguards I got for my Volt did not reduce my range and made the vehicle feel more sturdy on the road. I used to be very hard to take off from a stand still in the rain, but after installing the Driveguards on my car this hasnt been an issue. I hope I will gert the same results from the DriveGuard Plus I will be installing today or tomorrow, depending on if they can be shipped to the store today.
No spare tires in Chevy electric vehicles? This is news to me. Why would an electric powered vehicle have any less need for a spare? That doesn't make any sense to me, and sounds like marketing b.s.
@@vyoufinder Saves weight. Saves room for battery and storage. Electric cars come with fix a flat and tire pumps.

Just bought a new Cadillac and it came with run flat tires-no spare. I love the car but I feel it runs a little rougher than it should. My wife's 10 year old, Hyundai Sonata runs so much smoother. Not sure if I'll go with run flats again when it's time to replace them, not to mention the high price to replace them!
I did the same, ATS with pirelli run flats. Got Continental DWS and am much happier.
But also Cadillac has been leaning on the sporty side lately which may be the cause of a rougher ride. Like my ATS is definitely meant to compete with a BMW 330i.

Last week I hit a mini pot hole with my run flat
tires. What I thought happened was that I dented my rim, since there's not much tire between both.
When I pulled over to check things out, I was great full that everything was fine.
Had a Bridgestone RF with puncture centre tyre. 2 attempts to repair & still lost air = new tyre. There are new Self seal tyres available now that re-seal around or after a puncture.
One of the smoothest and silent cars on the road is fitted with runflats as standard. Rolls Royce.
One thing to note is that new cars equipped with run flat tires usually is not equipped with a spare tier or have the space such my 2020 BMW 7 series. I changed all tiers with none run flat which was less expensive and provide much better comfort ride but if I buy a spare tier it will occupy the trunk space with no harness to hold the spare tier. So a down fall of BMW Design is forcing me to put run flat and not givin me the option to chose.
you don't need a harness to hold the spare. It ain't going anywhere.
I totally agree. Auto manufacturers should not force you to only run with Run-Flat-Tire.
A spare tire is always necessary in a vehicle. RFT can break down in a remote location or at night without a near by store to repair it.
You make a good point, Fernando, but not all vehicles come with a spare nowadays. Some don't even have a spot in the car where a spare can be stored.

I just have Bridgestone DriveGuard Plus RFT for my minivan and I also have a full size spare tire. I like solid sidewall tires. So far, so good. Look like it helps on gas mileage.
@@jacktalkstires All cars have a trunk and crossovers , suv's have a cargo area, and a spare saver takes up about 1.5 cu ft if you fiqure out the volume = equal to a 14" cube
And probably is close the weight savings of dumping the Run-flats
Also rotational weight is 3 x on the car

I had a puncture more than 50 miles from home after working at the hospital, no garages to repair the tyre or replace the tyre were open. Emergency mobile tyre fitter didn’t stock the tyre i needed. Had a horrendous time and wish i had a conventional spare.
What you said is incomplete: "Consumer satisfaction is increasing with newer generations of run-flat tires." What the studies actually said is "Consumer satisfaction is increasing with newer generations of run-flat tires WHEN THEY ARE OEM AND THE SUSPENSION IS TUNED FOR RUN-FLATS"

What about the run flats that use foam instead of a stiff sidewall?
That's a good question. Technically, they're not run flats, since they lack the sidewall stiffness necessary to support the weight of the vehicle with zero air pressure. Instead, these are called self-sealing tires that are lined with a sealant material that plugs up the hole immediately after the tire is punctured. Some people like self-sealing tires, and they certainly might be right for you.

No. Keep the run flats.
Since you have a spare, I wouldn’t, I would wait til those are worn then put some good performance tires on that SRT.
I bought a used van with Michilen Pax run flats. Little did I know, 2 have slow leaks: 3 days and 1 month each. The cost to replace all 4 is $3000. Can not replace just he 2. Also, not even available any more. Replacing with standard wheels (rims &tires) is $2000. I bought a used car because I can't get a new one. Similar to stories of used electric cars and the battery is shot and no longer made. Also TPMS will not function after standard wheel replacement
Curious to know, what model of van is this you are speaking on? I have an '06 odyssey touring van with the pax, I think I may face this same issue you are referring to.

I don't care what anyone says. Run flat tires are the best thing to ever be invented in recent times in the automotive industry. Those who say otherwise have never been in terrible situations on the highway. Imagine going 67+ mph on the left lanes when one of your tires blow out. Warning lights and sounds come on the dash, you feel the car tilt and lose speed, you see cars on the right lane going 70+ mph, you eventually make it to the far right shoulder and now your heart is racing really fast. You call towing and wait there for 40+ minutes while cars are blazing past you at 70+mph. In all of that time you thought about how you could have gotten into a major wreck, gotten a serious life changing injury, or killed. With run flats you can drive your butt home or to the nearest tire shop with zero worries. Your life is more important than saving money on regular tires. Get run flats if you value your life.
I know someone who got killed by a drunk driver while changing a flat on the highway in New Jersey😢

@@Itsme-vo4fx Hello It's me. Thanks for your comment. I agree with you. In fact, I'm not suggesting everyone change to run-flat tires. It's not for everyone, but it is the right choice for some. I think we agree that it's a personal decision each driver has to make for themselves.

Not the best experience with RFT's. I've had to have the front tires prematurely die on me, all met the same fate of bubbles/pockets forming after hitting a not so big pothole. The latest one did some horrible damage, which forced me to decide that i no longer wanted RTF's by Pirelli on my vehicle, let alone any other run flat that's going to whimp out at a small pothole.

Run flat tires can still overheat and explode when driven on while low / leaking. They also become no good after being driven on so you would need a new tire 99% of the time
That's pretty much the case with most tyres after a puncture anyway. You can't really drive on them at all, if you do they're useless and can damage the rim too.
Um, no they don't overheat and explode when low/leaking. They are designed to withstand that. I ran a run-flat with no air for 100 miles and it held up 100% perfect.

I'm over 50 and have had multiple back surgeries and fusions. For me, trying to change a tire would probably put me in the hospital for a few days and rack up another surgery and there is no way I'm going to sit on the side of the road and wait on an Autoclub or a stranger to stop and help, so Run Flat was a no-brainer when I bought my 540i. I do notice the slightly stiffer ride, but the knowledge I can just head to the dealership or garage if I get a "flat" is all that matters. In a few more years I would imagine we won't even notice the difference.

I own a 2017 Toyota Sienna with RFTs. Can I replace them with normal tires?
Yes. Absolutely. Just as long as you respect the requirements spelled out by Toyota (speed rating, load index, etc)
If you have the pax tire I would suggest replacing them asap

You forgot one CON: most of the run-flat tires can not be repaired.
driveguards and driveguard plus can be repaired under the same guidelines as other bridgestone tires

@@istenfasza7835 yeah that’s fair. it’s repairable like any tire if you drive over a nail or something and drive on it with partial pressure, but if it’s totally flat and you drive on it for any appreciable distance it’s going to destroy the sidewalls
I guess the question is, when your car doesn’t have a spare does paying for a new tire cost more than a tow and repair, plus the time of waiting for a tow etc.
my car has a spare so I don’t need run flats but my wife’s doesn’t and I put driveguards on. if that gives me one time I don’t have to drive out to take care of it for her it’s worth the cost

Sounds like someone is planning a crime 🤣. I've never seen that scenario tested, but in theory run-flats should continue running, unless the spike strip shreds the tire (again, I'm not an expert on how spike strips work).
Another cons- they don't repair run-flats if punctured or whatever-you have to buy new one, at least $350.
I some cases you need to buy 2, because you want/need the same tires/profiles on your axle. Same goes for conventional tires but that's cheaper.

Depends on where the puncture is. A repair is possible if puncture is not on the side wall. Done this already and car runs fine

These are a safety risk because if your TPMS fails or you are not constantly checking it while going faster than 50 mph, you're living dangerously.
Convencional Tires have TPMS ..same as Run Flats..
I'm sick of people talking like there is a garage 50 miles that can just simply fix your tire, end of discussion and you are back on the road again, easy as that
Try to find a place that is 50 miles apart that is open 24/7 365, that also carry a BMW or MOE Run-flat tire that is exact size for your car or one that is even close to the size, even in a non Run-flat or for any brand of car period, just to get you to a place that carry's your tire, and if you did, you would have to throw that brand new tire in the garbage or just give it to the garage that has your tire when you get there, unless you want to take it on the road trip with you, and put on Ebay when you got home, to try to sell just one tire, good luck with that

I use a Spacer Saver wheel thrown in the trunk, as they are all M-rated for 81 MPH since there inception, and can be driven for thousands of miles, not 50, the limiting factor would be damage on the AWD system because of the diameter difference, but you would have to drive thousands of miles to damage it, so there's that
The 50 mph for 50 miles is for liability only as it is on a sticker on the rim, and not imbedded in the tire itself like MOE for Mercedes or a Star for BMW or a Snowflake to show it is all weather!
The tire is molded with raised letters that reads M-rated that means 81 MPH
Ask any Mechanic, or Google 'M' speed rating
And Google (The Mercedes C63 AMG Experiment - /CHRIS HARRIS ON CARS) who is from Top Gear who is on a Concrete handling track that is hard on tires, as he mentions it in the video

I drove across Texas on one for an experiment at 75/80 mph, from the northwest corner of the panhandle to the Rio Grande river just below Brownsville, about just over 800 miles, and it looks like brand new
They should make the Spacer Saver spare an option, on every car
As their are start up companies providing Spacer Saver spares for Teslas , Hybrids, Run-flat vehicles who want to put regular tires on for a better ride,quieter, handling, acceleration, braking, lighter, less unsprung weight, better mpg, cheaper etc etc etc, or use the Run-flat's to get to a safe area, then put the Spacer Saver spare on, to continue the journey to a garage if it is a non Run-flat to be fixed, or futher to a place that carries a matching tire for your vehicle if it can't be fixed, or if it is a Run-flat that can't be fixed, period!
Run flats are way too heavy and are way too expensive..
It should be illegal to sell a vehicle without a proper spare. And tools to do the job. At the very least a wheel that has a tyre the correct diameter of the rest. Space saver never and run flat never. I have a glamorous lady friend who knows how to change her own wheel. In heels and with long nails!
I am in Australia where getting a fancy tyre fixed business hours is hard enough. Or depending on where you are impossible. Weekends and after hours, totally forget about it. And this on main highways, anywhere else it will not happen. I sell tyres as aprt of my automotive business and the machines to fit these tyres as well as general low profile tyres are a lot more expensive. And take up twice the workshop space as the more simple machine. I have just bought one!
RFT on new E450C Benz are horrible. Hit small pothole = blow out, hit raised metal expansion joint on bridge = blow out and cracked rim. The only reason I keep these tires is b/c i have warranty on them, but they're still costly to replace (tax+shipping+time)☹Not to mention 1 rim = $1400. 3 blow outs I was able to get to safe place 4th the tire split on side. Tow truck needed. Car Manufacturers need to give option w/spare tire/jack in trunk. It's all a scam, but w/o extra tire/jack I feel stuck with these RFT🤬

Run flats are cool til you have flat and you have to replace the freaking tire.
Yep, I bought an 2022 X3, after 2 months I had a screw in 1 tire, dealer said : you can't repair a runflat. New tire = 500$ total.
And people, be aware that no matter what happens if you get a screw or run on a flat tire, you will have to buy a new one. There is no escape.
@@stephanelachance9131 don’t listen to the dealer they told me the same thing so I went to an independent shop they removed the razor and patched the tires and I have put 20,000 miles on it lol 😆 I paid 15$ for the patch
@@stephanelachance9131 yes there is you can patch the tyre for £15 pounds at a garage that isn't actually trying to rip you off and the tyre will be perfect it's a scam to buy new tyres if you've had a screen in it aslong as it hadn't went flat your cool to patch it up

Word of experienced advice. Never travel more than 50 miles from home with only run flats and no spare. Don't a buy new car that doesn't include a spare. These money grubbing bean counters only do it to increase their bonuses.
New cars with factory installed run flats do not come with spares. Mine definitely did not. There's nowhere n the trunk 2 store it.

If you purchased a BMW M performance car with rft from factory, your top speed is electronically limited to lower speed than conventional tires

Run flats are shit they are like driving on solid rubber, ur mpg will go up cause there heavyer, so what u save on tyres u spend like 2x on fuel ,also the cars prefomance is effected since the tyres heavyer it makes acceleration less ,as it takes more force to physically turn the wheel there utter crap, there are some situations were they are good like presidential vehicles ect ,but i actully think the cons out way the pros especially if u like ur car being fast and comfortable 😂😂

This is not the case in EVERY SINGLE CAR. For example, Mini Coopers come stranded with run flats (Even the S and JCW) and they are affecting its handling, install some Pilot Sport 4s and it will make a HUGE DIFFERENCE
