Awh, you’re taking all the fun out of it. Just kidding.
You did a great job on the back of the headstock, but my OCD wants to spend more time on the front. If you use really fine sand paper 2000 to 2500, you can really buff that up. I think I’d experiment with rubbing some black die into it, too; the body seems to have a very slight yellowing color, too. Finally, I’d shine it up with car wax and a buffing wheel.

Wow, the headstock came out pretty nice albeit lighter than the body. Next time for such a project, using this project as an example, try a little bit of gray and black (or whatever the contrasting colors may be) spray paint with at a bit of a distance (22-24 in) between the can and the headstock & speckle with light mist & short bursts. (having masked off where you do not want the spray), literally, like only one of two light passes, then steel wool (800-1600) over the finish, blending the colors. Once you get the right blend, use your sealer/oil/coat of choice. It is amazing how close you can get to the right colors. The quilt may not exactly match, but the right color depth & tones will blend it nicely overall.

Nice job Darrell. My suggestion is to rattle-can spray paint the face of the headstock gloss black.
I think it would look a little better than the sanded down original colour, that no longer matches.
It would take a couple of hours at most to prepare, mask and paint and would also be cheap to do.
    Keep up the great work!

@DBG And did you know Darrell, that on Hipshot Open Gear tuners, tightening the screw that attaches the tuner knob will actually tighten how the gears mesh and you can completely eliminate gear creep, (It's True!) which is fantastic for any guitar with a trem system! Nice job Darrell. The body has a look like aged clear that the headstock is lacking. A mahogany stain may have color matched the reverse of the headstock better, along with a coat of satin. I agree with your initial assessment, it's a nice guitar that didn't need to copy Suhr's logo. Cheers!

  • @normbarrows
    @normbarrows 2 ปีที่แล้ว

As mentioned elsewhere in the comments, if you haven't put oil or clearcoat on the back of the headstock, you might try some red dye or stain to better color match the neck. The front was looking kind of rough at first, but its not bad once you get the hardware on it. Waterslide decals followed by clearcoat would have been another option, as would wood burning small "No" or "Not" branding iron type brands into the headstock. Not much you can do with veneers when it comes to refinishing - SO easy to sand through! I recently ruined a flamed ES335 kit by sanding through the veneer. Now its a paint grade build at best.

I see a few comments about painting the headstock black, but I think that if you were to airbrush some black around the perimeter of the headstock (matching the body) and then apply a really glossy finish, it might end up looking fairly close to the body. Adding back a custom logo might help as well.

Hey Darrel. Power chords and double string notes in the higher frets of my guitar produce vibrating effect/sound. What is the problem? Like when I play F power chord, no vibration but when I play let's say B, there is unpleasant vibration. I have floating bridge and I have modified it only for lowering the pitch.

@@navinsubba7169 I don’t think that’s it. That’s probably the lowest you should have them. My pickups are about 4mm and the pull pieces about 2.5mm away from strings. If the magnets are too close, it can feed back. Do you have the same problem with other guitars? It could be something in your rig like the type of distortion.

@@navinsubba7169 I’m afraid floating bridges are out of my expertise, but there could be a number of issues:
      1. Make sure neck is straight
      2. Make sure bridge string action is set high enough to avoid buzzing against frets
      3. Dampen springs in back of cavity with cloth/foam

At this point, I would say just make the front of the headstock gloss black. Take the neck to a paint or hardware store and they should be able to match the red on the back of the neck.
Should have burned a big "NO" in nice font in front of the "Suhr" on the headstock and then burned "Fake" into the back of the headstock and body. Then you could have kept the original finish and look while making an interesting conversation piece, while protecting the brand and possible future purchasers. 🙂

But I wouldn't trade my 'collection' of 27 guitars for one $10,000 Gibson, Fender, or Martin. Asian artisans are superb & perfect for "the starving musician."
My new Indio Helix @ $153 from Monoprice is the finest of my electrics. Prices will skyrocket, bro. So, we come in on "the ground floor" before inflation dominates the market, which I see beginning. And with war on the horizon, changes are coming, brother.

I think the original chrome-coloured tuners and knobs looked better, as they were harmoniously matching the frets and inlays. The black tuners look okay if you like army camouflage, but they look a bit yucky to me, especially on the rear of the headstock with the black, brass and brown mix. Using black parts to match the bridge was a standard idea, but it was unnecessary, as the black body-edge already made that bridge look good.
It was good that you could take the logo off the headstock and still leave most of the paint. I would have liked to see a full job - restoring a black edge, like exists on the body. Don't you think that just sanding off the region that had the brand-name would have caused less damage?
I also don't understand the worry about tight-fitting sides in the neck joint. Every video, it's obsessing over something that doesn't matter. :D
I watch most of your videos. 'Hope that some constructive criticism can be endured.

But, if you got it in the right light you could see Gibson underneath Orville. I know of the true Orvilles that Gibson put out in the past but this wasn’t one of them. Next string change, just stain the front of the headstock black with gloss clear coat.
It'll look totally of a piece.
    Nice mystery guitar.

How did you determine it a fake?

  • @DRB2023

I would have found some kind of decal to hide the Shur logo. Then a quick clearcoat and call it good.

I think a decal of the International sign for NO over the Fake logo would be ok.
All would know it was a 'No' Shur guitar. Thanks DBG.

Such a nice guitar though. I'd love something like that

I'd have sanded down the entire guitar and just completely restained it but nice work anyway. Glad to see the chances of someone buying a fake are gone.

Could have put a random decal over the Suhr logo and clear coated that!

A good name for it would be Not-Sure with an Idiocracy movie logo lol.

You should have had another headstock decal made in the same font that said Not. Left it as Suhr Not

“It is a no name guitar now” (uncomfortable laugh((KnowIng the real truth)) seeing any profit in resale hit the floor) Still rad DB, it’s a keeper, it will fit into at least a few arrangements, fxck all the logo wars!

Would have added a tasteful custom sticker to hide the Suhr logo

Thanks for the entertainment and the great information, I hope your channel is around longer than I am.

Discreetly that's what he's hoping for.. along with the "upgraded" tuners and bridge. That's the end game here.. in my opinion.

Unless you intend to sell the guitar why remove the decals.
I have a custom made Strat with "Fender" decals that i bought used.
The seller made it clear that it was not made by Fender.
In my case the decals are on top of the lacquer, so easly removed.

I have almost the same guitar from Harley Benton with original Grovers, Floyd Rose and stainless steel frets. Paid 200 euro's for it, used.
