    It stuns me that someone can produce a reasonable guitar in it's own right and then totally discredit it by deliberately making it a fake.
    Why not set out to make a reasonable guitar and market it for what it is.... a reasonable guitar.

    • @kenteel2944
      @kenteel2944 3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      You comment begs the question: how much did the original owner pay for the guitar ? If putting a fake name on the front ups the price that the manufacturers and/or middle men can sell the guitar for, then there is the answer to your question.

    • @redrock1963
      @redrock1963 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kenteel2944 - Possibly a fair call. My question, more rhetorical than real, was more concerned with the idea of pride of place in the market. That an otherwise reasonably produced guitar would not seek it's own place and recognition and hopefully gather a following of supporters in a middle price range - rather than being called out as a fake with all the negative vibe that goes along with that. Greco is a good example. Greco made reasonable quality guitars and used their own branding - they never tried to pretend they were Gibson. They are now sought after for their reasonable build qualities.

      Agreed. I don't know a lot about the manufacturing process/licensing etc. but it seems like, instead of banking on fooling a few people, they could have produced this for another legit company or their own brand and it would be well-received (although clearly not at the Suhr price but wouldn't the volume of sales make up for that?)

  • @edwardboot3431

    As a guitar player of 17 years, and someone who is getting into woodworking and has restored has also some antique guitars, I have to say the craftsmanship on this guitar is absolutely immaculate. That burst finish is incredible. The routing for the pickups is perfect. From seeing it in the video, the setup, neck, and fretwork are flawless. The imperfections you pointed out (the chipping around the neck screws and truss rod), hell you can find muck ups like that on Gibsons. This thing is insane for a forgery.
    One of you said it; this guitar, if they started their own brand and made something unique with this craftsmanship, you could easily stack it against Ibanez, ESP, and Schecter in the $700-1000 range. It's a shame so much attention to detail is put into a forgery. I'm going to guess in another 5-10 years (if it's not already happening now), there are going to be forgeries that are so good, that you won't be able to tell the difference anymore. If they're able to mimic things down to this level, they could easily pull it off. The people making these aren't stupid, and can easily access the internet to find videos like yours and figure out how to remove the clues. I think the only way this will end is (maybe) with the NFT market, linking guitars to a distinct, digital certificate of authenticity. It's starting to happen for other physical items in the world.
    Darrell, please do not destroy this guitar (if you haven't yet). That would be very wasteful. Despite being a forgery, it is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship that some very talented people put together. I know another channel out there that finds forgeries, and they etch into the back of the guitar "forgery", so there's an idea instead of wrecking the nice headstock logo (even though it's a fraud). I'm with others to donate this guitar. Especially during this pandemic. I'm sure there's some kids and teens out there that would absolutely love this thing, and buying a new guitar seems out of the question for them now. What an awesome first or even intermediate guitar this would be for someone. That is my two cents.

      @Louis George White Jr so I think it would be fair to say that this fake Suhr guitar could have come with a COA and that should not be a reason to believe it's real.

    • @fabronaut7478
      @fabronaut7478 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      if you're looking to buy used and someone provides the COA, which should associate with a specific serial number and build spec, you could likely contact Suhr and ask them if it is a legitimate guitar, cross referencing the details of how it is built against known serial numbers.
      guitars at Suhr's price point are generally built to order based on the options a customer requests, if you order directly from them. if I went to the very large instrument dealer near me and bought a Suhr from them, it would still have a COA and likely an associated spec sheet. even the standard options can have variants in colour, and almost certainly have markings internally, such as in the electronics cavities or in the neck pocket.
      they're not churning out thousands at a time, so those costs are built into the price of the instrument. I would certainly hope that for the insane money that the custom shops at Fender and Gibson charge, they would do something like that as well.
      personally, I need to spend probably three times as much as a Suhr on lessons and putting in a lot of practice to justify owning one... but if I could have any lower production guitar, Suhr's on the shortlist. Collings as well. when every single one you pick up is very good to great, you know you have a winner.

    Just a thought on what to do with the guitar:
    This seems like a great candidate for a repair demonstration. Since you know what the tuning problems are, you could do a video about how to rectify them. ;o)
    The bridge problem in particular is interesting. You could obviously do some woodwork by plugging and re-drilling the 'straight' knife side post, but you could also see if it's possible to do a little metal work on the bridge itself and leave the quilted maple unmarred. As for the nut, it would also be interesting to see a before and after intonation comparison with a compensated nut (such as Earvana).
    Either way, another great video!

    I did mod a brand new $2000 2020 Fender American Ultra. I used a new pickguard and replaced the ultra noiseless pickups with some Di Marzio area pickups and an active mid boost with a fishman battery spring claw cover. However, I kept the original pickguard in one piece so if I ever need i can put it back if I need.

    Ditch the Wilkinson trem, route for a good Floyd Rose trem and locking nut, put decent pickups in it, do a video on how to install stainless steel frets, and by all means, put "No" in front of Suhr instead of just wiping out the logo! Maybe burn "FORGERY" on the back.

    I've changed pickups and wiring on quite a few high-end, pre-owned guitars. Just pointing it out that I've found some of the larger brand names don't always come with great stock pickups and also don't come with the best wiring setups either. Same with amplifiers. I've found a couple boutique amp companies short-cutting on some of their (caps and resistors) internal components. I'm talking about guitars I purchased back a couple of decades ago- before the onslaught of counterfeits we're bombarded with today.

The tone pots were replaced with rotary tone switches. As I needed set screw knobs for the rotary switches, I replaced all four of the Gibson witch hat knobs with Fender witch hat knobs. Less than a week later I replaced the tuners with Grover Rotomatics. I eventually replaced with Tune-O-Matic bridge with a harmonica bridge. I've had 2 Suhrs, one came with Sperzels, but rhey also work with Gotoh hardware so my bridge was a Gotoh floyd style. Also, yes, they don't use string trees but the one with the floyd style and locking nut I had, did have the string tree bar, not the individual ones, a whole bar that pulls all strings down before going to the tuners. Also Wilkisnon bridge, again, they work with Gotoh for those, Floyd Rose style or floating 510.
