You know, I bet you could make keto "hash-browns" using that squash. There is your next challenge ladies. Some eggs, some coconut flour, minced onion, garlic powder..... You got this.
Yes, please.
Cutting tip:pierce the squash all over with the knife tip, microwave for a few minutes to soften the squash a bit, this makes it much safer and easier to cut.
Thanks for the roasting tip, just came home with a spaghetti squash for the first time in 2 years and I had in my mind to roast it this time, and like magic ,there it is! Thanks girls ❤
Thank you!
What a fabulous tip! Thank you very much!!
Did you know that it can be baked whole without cutting it first? I just found that out last year. A total game changer for a senior like me. Cut into rings after baking to get the roasted and dry qualities as desired. Same with butternut squash and acorn squash. Don't risk accidentally hurting yourself trying to cut them beforehand. Love from north Texas. 😎👍🏻
Genius! We had no idea obviously lol
Brilliant
Thank you!
What is the cook time when left whole?
Can you eat the seeds too then?
May I ask, do you put oil on the outside when baking the whole squash? What temperature and time? Is it difficult to remove seeds? Thank you!
I’ve been roasting my spaghetti squash in rings so I could fit it in the air fryer. I knew about the longer strands this way, but I didn’t know I was being revolutionary, lol
Hey Keto Twins, if you microwave the whole spaghetti squash for 4 or 5 minutes prior to cutting it, it will be softer and easier to cut. Hope this helps!!
I roast mine at 450 for 45 minutes or so, which gives a great deep flavor and allows you to shred all the way to the skin.
FYI, To make cutting the spaghetti squash rings easier and safer: cut a thin strip off one side of the squash, just enough that you can lay it down on that side of the squash and it will be stable as you cut the rings. I do this with melons, etc. nice hack to bake the rings. I’ve not liked soggy spaghetti squash so I’ll try it this way😊
I roast the squash whole just until it is easy to cut, then I removed it from the overn cut it (way easily) and then continue to cut it the way I want...Then return to roast in the oven. Also much safer.
Also you could elevate the rings on a rack so the hot air gets underneath. Also you could make the strands and pop it back in the oven to dry out a little more.
This makes think that air frying it might really kick it up a notch!
You might try flipping the halves over flat side down, to cook. After they are cooked I mix in garlic, salt, pepper, butter, parmesan and cheddar cheeses. Then I portion it up and freeze it. It’s quick and easy to reheat in the microwave. I use it as a mashed potato replacement.
I never thought to use it for potatoes, I chop it up and use it often to replace rice.
I grew spaghetti squash for the first time this year and got a really good crop off of just two plants. I ended up baking it off and freezing in two cup portions since I dont have a great place to store a bunch of squash (yet). I wish I knew this hack ahead of time, lol. Now I know! I'm definitely going to grow it again next year. It was very easy to grow, though you do need a fair deal of space for it. I have heard that some people trellis it, but I haven't tried that. I use it just like spaghetti with a meat and veggie heavy marinara (also mostly from my garden).
How much space did the spaghetti squash take up while you were growing it?
I was given a squash but before I could cook it, It started sprouting from the inside out. I guess I got seedlings in time for Autumn. Yay.I wonder if the seedlings can overwinter.
I grow mine on a trellis.... takes up less room
I tried spaghetti squash and like it better than regular spaghetti noodles😍
@@tammylemoine3019 actually same here
I use my electric knife for cutting things like spaghetti squash and watermelon
Good idea! I knew that old thing had to be good for something! Lol. I'll have to go find where I packed it away.....lol.
I've always cut my spaghetti squash across the shorter middle. My thinking is your "traditional" cut came out much more moist because you oiled the entire surface and placed it bowl-up, which trapped the moisture in. Had just the cut edges been oiled to prevent sticking and then placed cut side down, moisture can then escape onto the pan to dry as the squash bakes. That is how I do it - one cut, de-seed, bake = dry, long strands. Hope this is helpful. Love your videos, they have been very helpful to my keto lifestyle journey. Thanks!
Use a canning lid ( snap lid) to scrap seeds out
I will definitely try this. To cut easier I put in microwave whole five minutes. Much easier to cut. I love spaghetti squash tossed with butter and Parmesan and seasoned with salt and pepper. Ty!!
I always soften the squash by microwaving the whole squash for 5 minutes. Then the slicing and cleaning is much easier..
You need to use a granton edge knife. You know the ones with the little dimples along the blade. They cut through tough things like rutabagas almost as good as a hot knife through butter! Has something to do with allowing air pockets or something between the blade and veggie and it then slices easily with little effort.
A grapefruit spoon works great for removing seeds on all squashes!
Spaghetti squash has a sweet, buttery, nutty flavor, such that as I was cooking up a few batches to freeze, I decided I would make a sort of (un-rice) pudding of some. I used some butter, sweetener, and cream, with a small amount of vanilla extract and a pinch of salt. I used a knife and cut up the strands to approximately a quarter inch, then mixed it all together. A light sprinkling of cinnamon gave me such a flashback of my Mom’s rice pudding when I was a kid! Heaven! The ingredients could also be baked like rice pudding (with eggs?) and allowed to cool. I plan on having a great time making several recipes with this versatile ingredient!
Also, there’s an aroma not dissimilar to corn, so I think there’s some potential to use some blended cooked spaghetti squash as a small ingredient in a “corn bread”, with some Corn Bread extract/ flavoring.
Best wishes Girls! And thanks for a YUMMY show! 🤗
Pat in New Hampshire
I just love to watch y’all. (Texan here 😂) Anytime I get a video notification, I watch as soon as I possibly can!
Not sure if anyone else mentioned this but if you microwave the squash for a few minutes before cutting, then it cuts so much easier and the seeds c one out easier.
Oh really?!! Thank you!
Cut your squash in half side to side. Put it in the insta pot 8 minutes with 1 cup water. When done, natural release and clean out the seeds. Delicious, long spaghetti!
To scrape out the seeds I use a butter curler tool. Works great for pumpkins , cukes, anything with seeds and takes half the time
That's how I've always done it. The roasting really adds a lot of flavor. I've started pre-cooking it in the microwave, which makes it easier to cut. Roasting it carmalizes it which makes it sweeter.
The hack you need to try is how to cut hard vegetables. Put the blade of the knife a small way into the vegetable and rock the vegetable back and forth, holding the knife steady. Much safer and easier.
I grow my own spaghetti squash. You can also roast it by just cutting in half and scooping out seeds. Open ends down and bake 400° for 35 to 40 mins. I cook mine in toaster oven. Also delish with a tiny bit of butter and fresh Parm.
If you poke a few holes in the spaghetti squash, I use an ice pick…
put it whole in the microwave on high for a minute or two, it softens it enough to cut so much easier.
What about heating it a bit in the microwave? then cutting it will be easier
I think this method would be perfect for the air fryer!
When I cook spaghetti squash I use the olive oil and s&p but turn it over on a wire rack and that gets some of the moisture out while it cooks
I would just bake it in the microwave or oven, then place the cooked squash in a tray with olive oil and bake until carmelized. I usually soften my squash in the microwave before cutting. So much easier and safer.
I'm trying this method out today. Cutting it was definitely a bit sketchy! I did poke it and nuke it first and using a serrated knife, the bigger the better, seemed to work well. My son is making bolognese for Mother's Day so I can use my own pasta to stay keto.
I love your channel! I was keto about 8 years ago, when people didn't know what keto was. I'm so happy to see all this keto related content now!
I ordered some LMNT too and it really does help, especially with reducing muscle cramps.
Keep up the good work, twins!
I have always used spaghetti squash as noodles and my kids are now late 40’s. Fooled em every time 🤣❤️
You can cook the squash cut side down with no salt, works well. GOD BLESS
I caramelize an onion in butter and mix into my squash with salt and pepper.
Hi, if you put the squash to cook 5 to 10 minutes in the microwave, then it is very easy to cut and finish baking it in the oven❤
I really love how you always credit the people who give you the idea.
🤗🤗 of course!
Delicato squash, even the peel is edible, delicate, tasty and good. Don’t know the carbs. As a single person, spaghetti squash has always been too much for me, but I could cook and free single servings and eat as needed, as a noodle substitute. Great idea for we single serving people. That’s a nice way to say I live alone and like it. Well, except for my dogs. I usually cook a ring for them too.
If you nuke the squash a bit first, it cuts WAY easier. Roasting it like this will be my next try at spaghetti squash.
Hi ,if you stop using salt until you have cooked it it won't be as watery.GOD BLESS
Love spagetti squash, your standard/traditional bake, but I fill the inside with butter and sweetener, so good...sweet, and almost like a desert.
I grow spegetti squash…once harvested it lasts through most of the winter. Use it all the time for spegetti. It’s great …I like this idea though on how to cut it…thanks. ☺️☺️
I've always hated how spaghetti squash gets watery, especially with tomato sauces - gotta try this! Thanks so much for your hard work and dedication to keto cooking, you both rock.
Perfect for the air fryer!
I love spaghetti squash it is so easy to grow and store it for winter meals . Great video!
I’ve never grown them but I definitely want to!
This was interesting to watch! I used to eat spaghetti squash A LOT, but got tired of that watery texture it had. Now I'm going to have to try this one!!! Thx ladies...you're awesome!!! 💙
Just a suggestion... When you have 2 halves of spaghetti squash cut the short way, to make cooking easier, turn them upside down in a layer of water, and bake. It will hold the seasonings, butter/oil because it comes out very moist, sweet, and very tasty. You can tell it's done when you take a fork and poke it or push it down on the back of the hump and it's soft. Then pull away from the edges and you will have long spaghetti strands in a squash bowl. That's how I cook mine and I'll add chicken, veggies, or whatever I like. YUM! 🤤
It’s so much work to cut! We just cut the long way, gut, then paint with butter before roasting. OMG yes we only make spaghetti squash roasted & with butter salt & pepper. It tastes like candy and we struggle stopping!
I've always baked the traditional cut upside down. With the rind facing up. That may make a difference.
This is a perfect video for me who always craves spaghetti, thank you for being there for us all.
🤗🤗
Thank for this tip! Roasted veggies taste sweeter because of the carmelization of the natural sugars in the squash, when you roast them like this. Good job!
I'm off to buy some spaghetti squash, now.
Was scrolling to see if someone was going to mention this, lol. Thank you.
My most recent use of spaghetti squash have been the best, you just have to be sure to roast it long enough and then dress it with flavorful sauce. REALLY good.
I have a spaghetti squash sitting on my counter and some fresh baked keto dinner rolls cooling. I believe I know what I am having for dinner. Love the new way of baking the squash. Thank you!
Actually, you guys did make spaghetti sqash in a video a long time ago! You put Boursin cheese in it. I tried it because of you guys, and I still eat it that way! I will definitely try this too ❤
You’re right!! We forgot about that!!❤️
I didn’t like spaghetti squash because of the wetness. I’m excited to try it again! Thank you!
Thanks girls 😘!!! I actually like spaghetti squash but I always go the lazy way and microwave 🤣🤣 .The roasted ones definitely looked even better, maybe I should give it a try😊
Yeah, I always microwaved portions, until last year we grew a super wet variety. I did it like usual, uncovered, well, my microwave died from too much moisture. This fall we grew 3 different varieties of Spaghetti squash from seed. Using my oven (but no oil)& turned upside down. Miss the convenience of microwaving.
Put it in the microwave for a few minutes before cutting. Cuts so much easier.
I've roasted spaghetti squash in halves, but oiled and roasted cut side down.
What I do to make spaghetti squah easy to cut is nuke the whole thing in the microwave maybe 3 minutes. This softens it enough to cut easily. Could save you a finger.
Hello! Im a squash aficionado. Something that is very tasty with spaghetti squash is to bake it the first way, but turn it shell side up, which allows some of the moisture to bake away. When tender, flip it up, like a boat. Fluff up the strands, stir in a few tablespoons of your favorite tomato sauce, then sprinkle cheese of choice on top. Bake again for approx 10 minutes to melt the cheese.
I have used spaghetti squash strands to replace rice when making fried rice. It tastes really good with the eggs mixed in and cooked to your doneness.
I would also suggest you buy the darkest golden yellow you can find for the most flavor, as they are the most ripe. Thanks for the lovely video.
I love spaghetti squash and will try it by cutting this way!
Cook it at higher temp shorter time. Alfredo with chicken is awesome with it.
You mentioned that the traditional spaghetti squash looked like hashbrowns. I wonder if you could make hashbrowns out of them??
Hey precious Keto Twins! If you should happen across snack recipies made with Bamboo flour, I am totally interested and glued to your vibe, and part of your tribe! 😆
Many thanks!
Papa Bear,
North Central Texas 😎👍
Interesting…this video has 4 views but 18,000 likes. TH-cam, what are you up to??😂😂😂
That’s definitely a glitch lol
Thank you ladies. Definitely gonna change the way I cook it!
It is better roasted !
I just ordered LMNT for the first time and used y’all’s link. I can’t wait to try it mixed with my chocolate collagen drink along with some keto marshmallows.
Hope you love it!!
Love spaghetti squash! Cutting tip - roll the squash back and forth while pressing down the knife (only works for the rings of course)
Really been missing beef & noodles, or chicken & noodles, or angel hair pasta.
Im ready to get back to stuff i know.
Headed to store to buy some spaghetti squash. Thanks.
I would love to give it a try in the air fryer
It's a nice tip. Seems like a lot more work but I like the idea of it being dryer. I love it either way. I am a big fan of spaghetti squash. I love using it in so many different ways.
It's delicious 😋
I will definitely be trying this.
I’ll try out this new way! Thanks
If you turn your squash with the cut side down to roast you will have better results. Roast until the outside skin has browned.
We were in the grocery store to get another Spaghetti squash and the worker said there has been a run on that veggie lately. We tried the ring cut and it works great. You must have started something.
🤗🤗
I just stab full of holes with a fork or knife tip like You would a baked potato & roast it whole for 20 mins & roll over.
Then after it was fully cooked, You could slice however & dry it out with ease??
Just a thought 😊
I did not realize how sweet spaghetti squash was until a friend mentioned it when I used it to make Spaghetti Factory's Garlic Myzithra.
After that I made it with zoodles since. Where in marinara dishes sweet is welcome; there is no place in that dish for sweet.
You Grrrls ROCK!! Thank You for such great work!! We Love The Keto Twins Test Kitchen!!
Look out Wesley!!! 😉😍
Just kidding!!
My husband loves spaghetti squash, but for me it was too watery. Will try roasting in rings. Thanks again for a new recipe. Your website or TH-cam are the first place I turn to for keto recipes.
This is the BEST KETO channel !
You two have helped me so much living a technically keto life style! Love how you two keep finding better and different replacement options for high carb foods! Helps me to stay honest and on track on my keto journey!
Awwwwww your comments are always so kind, thank you!
I like it and i grew it this year so i have a bunch! I like it because it takes on the flavors of my dish and i am sure going to try roasting it ty
Delicious. So much better than just halving and cooking. I was curious as to whether cooking on a sheet pan with a wire rack would make any difference than just roasting on sheet pan with silicone. There was no difference in the taste. Next time I will coat top of slices with oil. I lost some of my squash spaghetti because the top did not shred. After I shredded, I added butter, parmesan cheese, & a small amount of Pesto. I tried another batch with Keto sloppy joe or Keto Cincinnati chili. It was YUMMY. I'm curious if you took zucchinni spiralized noodles & let them dry out in the oven a little what that would taste like. Has anyone tried that? Thank you for all your experimentations. You are the mad scientist of keto.
The sweetness of spaghetti squash is what I don’t like. But I might give this hack a try for some variety.
The way you originally made it looks quite moist. (I know people hate that word)
Thanks for sharing all the keto tips and tricks that you share with us. Keep up the great work!
It's been a few years since I have used spaghetti squash. I didn't miss it, mainly because of the wetness. I really like this hack. I've been looking for a way to incorporate low-carb vegetables back into my diet, having completed a 10-week carnivore regime. So I'm definitely going to try this one. PS, I started keto after watching your videos, just to see where it would take me. That led me to having vastly improved lab work and an extra 20lbs weight loss. Thanks, especially thanks, for the idea of using LMNT.
All squash goes great with butter. You put a little oil to cook but definitely add butter when you serve.
I was taught to salt the squash and cook it upside down. I tried once cooking it in the rings, I didn't notice the difference in taste myself, but it was way more work to try and cut all those rings. I just went back to cooking it my normal way.
If you cut a small slice, then roll the squash back and forth, it cuts well. I do this for anything round! I'll try this hack. Getting more veggies in!
Microwave it for about five minutes first and then try cutting. So much easier and safer!
I'm going to try grilling spaghetti squash rings in a skillet--after I soften it in the microwave for 3 to 5 minutes.
T
You should turn the squash halves face down on the tray versus face up
You can cut it the short way and cook in the instant pot for 7 minutes. Long strands, less time! You could always dry it if need be in a hot pan. Great with a bolognese.
Have to thank you girls for turning me on to Hero bread!! Best tasting Keto bread out there. Ordered more and put in freezer 😊
I heard that poking a few holes with an ice pack or whatever and then cooking it in the microwave for two minutes makes it easier to cut, but even easier I have my husband cut it then!
On my way out soon to buy a spaghetti squash. I can’t wait to try. I love it and this will be a game changer for me. YUMMY!
Hi ketotwins! I love your hack. It does taste better. If you want to make it a little easier to cut, try poking a few holes in it and microwaving it for 3 or 4 minutes to soften it up.
For some reason - this video made me think of Julia Childs....and that movie called Julie & Julia. Likely because you keep trying all these hacks for recipes - cracks me up. I am going to give this hack a go, looking forward to it. I will have to purchase a spaghetti squash, not done in years!
We love that movie!! ❤️
I'm going to try the rings next time I make spaghetti squash.
Thanks y’all! I want to try that method next time I make it. I like the flavor of the squash but def like the idea of having it not t so wet.
😊going to try this, wondering if doing it in an air fryer would dry it out even more, ill try that second
