When doing a cut out, how long does it take to capture the queen?

    I can hardly believe that this video marks my 400th that I have posted on TH-cam, and when I stop to think about it, that's a lot of videos. I have to say though, it certainly does not seem like that's the number, but being faithful to my promise of "I'll be making more," I guess I would have reached that number one day. Thank you all so much for inspiring me to continue making videos by the simple fact of you watching them.
    On this video Good Time Charlie and Wreck it Ralph will once again lend their expertise and guidance on removing a colony of bees from a raised house that is slated for renovation. As you will see, one of the main reasons this house was being worked on was the extensive amount of termite damage throughout it.
    What might seem a bit "let downish" is how quickly the queen was captured on this one, almost immediately. However, since she was caught so quickly, that made our job so much more easy, and I do love easy.
    Now don't think the video is over just because we say so, there's lots more after. I decided to go ahead and show the release of these bees once I returned to the abbey, so make sure you stick around to see that as well.
    Once again, thank you so much for being such great viewers and watching all these crazy bee wrangling adventure videos that I love to make and share. God's peace to all.
    Mr. Ed

      I had grave concern about the beetles in this hive, especially since the number of bees was so low and the number of beetles was so high. It was for that reason I did not place any of the comb into the nuc box, but rather gave them drawn comb to work with. Next week's video will be an update on these girls, stay tuned for that. Thank you for your blessings and for watching. God's peace Peter.

      Jeff Horchoff Bees oh come on now-roaches are an incredibly important part of the ecosystem, just like bees. Even if y’all do grow them to the size of pets down there. 😉 (I actually had to design research protocols for ethical experimentation on roaches and bees for a Canadian university a few years ago, and they’re remarkably similar social insects. Of course, I have cats and I live pretty far north, so the only time I have to deal with them is when I’m visiting family in your neck of the woods. 😂)

    Those bees had a lot of gross bugs to deal with. The cockroachs were clearly stealing their honey. I'm glad you rescued them, because otherwise they would have died, being overrun by bugs. Do hives start to fail because there are too many bugs to deal with? Or do hives fail for other reasons and then have bugs move in on them because they are already failing? Good video 👍

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Often, hives die because of other insects inside of them. Most often mites, small hive beetles, and wax moths are responsible for the demise. However, roaches are never responsible for the collapse of a bee hive. Still, they are very gross. God's peace MD.

I have had many many eye surgery's ,and i cant find the queen and with the veal i cant see eggs either . but have not had any problem with my hives taking care of them selves . I have never vacuumed any though , But have shaken into a box often . and with out any problem .

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The main reason I spend so much effort locating and capturing the queen is I do not want her to be harmed, and KNOWING that I have her safe and sound gives me greater hope that the bees will survive the removal and recovery. It's not necessary to know where the queen is in a bee box, as long as you see larva and capped brood, you know there is a queen in the hive. Continue on with your method, it works for you, and that's the important thing. Thanks for watching. God's peace John.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      During the summer months, hive beetles are most present in hives. Then, when their numbers grow to large, the bees can no longer contain them to certain areas of the hive, and this is when the beetles have the opportunity to lay eggs and the emerging maggots will then kill a bee hive. Really nasty little critters, I hate them way more than I hate cock roaches. Roaches can NEVER kill a hive. God's peace Leann.

      @@JeffHorchoff So... i was thinking about how to control these beatles. I know there are trays used in conjunction with diatomaceous earth, oil, etc. Chickens can be used once they're on the ground. What if one or two more steps are taken to assist the tray method. Do you think if a product were made like a double sided sticky tape with a substance that stays sticky, stuck on the bottom of the four sides of the hives would catch beatles before they got to the hive? Or even some of the fiber material that catches their feet? Also, I read that they fall to the ground then burrow in. What if there were a small tray positioned under from wherever they fall to stop them from reaching the dirt? Not sure if these two ideas have been tried before.

      Roaches get a bad reputation. They are common in the south and don't necessarily indicate poor living conditions and disease like they do in the north. They are everywhere in the south.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's not that bees "allow" the roaches or beetles or mites or moths or lizards or spiders or ant, or the dozen other creatures you can find in a bee hive to be in the same area as the hive, they just are and the bees either handle the situation or are killed by it. You do not have to worry about roaches transferring diseases to the hive or to the honey, I know of no such a thing nor heard of it. Interesting situation this time. Good one to learn some things about how to rehive bees that weren't thriving, including avoiding using the old comb to prevent the beetle infestation from transferring right over to the new hive. I bet with a clean hive and the fresh jar of honey, those bees will have a real chance to rebound and thrive.
    But I'm wondering about that queen. You said there was hardly any brood, honey or pollen, and few bees. Do you think it's a new queen, a dud queen or what? What about the lack of stores? What could cause a hive to do so poorly?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The queen was in question right away on this one, but I'm happy to report things have turned around for these bees. Next weeks video is a follow up on this hive as well as the last one Ralph, Charlie, and I did. You will see for yourself what's going on. Thanks for watching. God's peace Carole.
