    It's not often I do follow up videos, but that's exactly what this video is about. I will be checking on two hives that just a month ago were in someone's house but now are relocated to the abbey. Both of these hives had queen issues and food storage issues which is why I will be checking on them, to see if there have been any improvements on those two fronts, as well as the general health of the hive since the removal.
    So get that cup of coffee or whichever morning eye opener you enjoy and click the start button. I do thank you for taking the time to watch, and have a great weekend. Till next week, God's peace.
    Mr. Ed

    One of the videos I should have made this year would have been the bees cutting the rubber bands and dragging them out of the hive. It's amazing how they do this. They first secure the comb to the frames and then remove the rubber bands.... absolutely amazing how they figure this out.

    Letting you know that your content has further helped me overcome my fear of bees 🥰 Again, went from almost running off a cliff to evade a honeybee, to now being able to clip and tend my herbs with honeybees just inches away. Still flinch when I hear buzzing, and have to say aloud "Hello bees, don't mind me. Just doing my own thing, please just keep on with your beezy business." But, would have never even dreamed to do that in the past. Keep doing what you're doing, it makes a difference!

    Our ivy flow is on right now here in Baltimore...massive amounts of natural plant based pollen and nectar to raise those winter nurse bees and plenty of late winter bee bread being stored around the winter brood nest for massive buildups as they move out into early spring...gotta love those late season flows.

    Mr Ed, it’s good to see both colonies have adjusted well to life at the Abby. Hopefully they will produce honey next year and earn their keep. You definitely did the right thing by not opening those hives when the bees were taking pollen from the feeder. I would have been scared to set them up that close to the feeder but I know that you know a lot more about bees than I do! Thanks for the video and we both know God is in control.

    There was a pair of love bugs on the pollen feeder. I haven't seen any since I lived in Shreveport/Bossier City. Really enjoyed this video, Jeff. Since you were wearing your bee suit, I was hoping to see you being chased while mowing. 🤭

    • @JeffHorchoff

      Thankfully I was not chased, but I usually am. I was actually surprised that the bees did not come out in full force, it was why I was videoing as I went by. Still, glad they stayed inside. The love bug season is actually over, but there are a few of them still around. 2 weeks ago they were covering everything. God's peace Leann.

    It’s so weird. I did 2 cut outs this year. The first one has been struggling and I had to re-queen them as she didn’t survive the initial move. The second one has gone all out! I walked up to the NUC a week after I put them in my yard and saw all these stringy things out the front. As a new bee keeper, I thought to myself “what kind of worms are in my hive? Is it going move to my others?” It turned out that they had cut all the rubber bands from the cut out and were pushing them out the door.

    • @JeffHorchoff

      It's always interesting to see how the bees react to being relocated, sometimes good, sometimes bad. Regardless of the outcome, and I'm always grateful when it's a success, I know the bees were given the best opportunity to survive. If they had not been removed, they would have been killed. Way to go Preston, keep up the good work! God's peace brother.

    to say you make this look easy is the is the biggest understatement ever. ten bee stings later, i’m through with my one beehive for today ~ maybe forever. in the process, i’m not even sure what i did. he only thing i know for sure is that after about thirty minutes of looking through the two brood box and one super, some bees got in my suit so i took off running. i tore off my bee suit as fast as i could, but dozens of bees were chasing me. i ran out of the back yard, up the driveway, and across the street. they were still chasing me. what started it was, i was going to check the honey super. then i saw a huge ball of bees that extended from the hive opening to underneath the screen bottom board, and all over the two cinder blocks the hive was sitting on. my biggest mistake was getting into beekeeping in 2016. the $500-plus initial investment should have been enough to scare me away. i got 23 half-pint jars of honey in 2017 ~ that’s it, ever. since then i’ve spend hundreds of dollars on more hives, replacing dead bees, queens, and swarm commander. anyway, i think i mostly scooped up all the outside bees and put them in another box about 50 feet away. and, took some frames out of the other two boxes and put them in the new box. as you probably know, these stories go on and on. i don’t know what i did, and in the process, i forgot everything i learned from you. i’ve showered, taken two benadryl, and am staring out the window. i don’t feel good, and can’t even say why. this whole thing is crazy.

      There is no doubt about it, keeping bees is not for the faint of heart. It is serious work, and there are so many heart aches you suffer trying to get a bit of honey. • @edmartin875
      @edmartin875 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Old bees die every day and young bees have not yet emerged to add to the population yet This means the total population will decrease at first. In fact, the older bees will be working that much harder since they recognize the hive is in dire straits. They will end up knocking several days or more off their normal lifetime.

    Nice progress on the two cutouts. You had a candid camera going there for a moment. Lol. I wish that they made a smaller version of that particular feeder for those of us with only a few hives. For now I have made a couple of feeders made out of PVC pipe that work well. I have wondered thought, if the column of feed avalanches onto them as they burrow into it at the bottom. Take care Jeff.

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used PVC feeders for years, they worked great, but I was constantly refilling them. When I found this one where I could put 10 pounds of pollen substitute at a time in it, I was sold. For some reason, it never has avalanched on the bees....at least to my knowledge. Thanks for watching. God's peace Joe.

    I never realized how those lawn mowers look fun like a go kart!

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This particular model lawn mower will out run a go kart even while it's cutting the grass. Of course, when I'm cutting around the bee hives, I really appreciate the speed this one has. Most of the time when I cut around the hives, the bees will come out in droves, they can not stand the vibrations the lawn mower's engine makes or when the grass cuttings shoot out towards the hive, but this time the bees did not mind my presence at at. Check out the link below and you will see a different sight.Thanks for watching, and I hope you will check out more of my bee wrangling/ bee rescues adventures and let me know what you think of them. Smashing video Jeff, I wonder how the bees know how to start work on a new frame, or how they work together to drag out a rubber band? That rubber band to them must be like a 10 foot wide 1 mile long rubber conveyor belt would be to us, I mean can you imagine trying to drag one of those on your own? They must have some way of distributing labour and working together to split the tasks, like we can talk to each other, like "hey Jeff come over here and give a us hand with this 10 foot wide 1 mile long rubber conveyor belt thing, I can't drag it on my own" do you think they do it by eye movements and nodding their head or waving their antennae lol?

    Jeff Do you have a video on what a good brood pattern looks like?

    • @JeffHorchoff
      @JeffHorchoff  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry, I do not. I don't speak much about that subject other than point it out when I run across it. The way to identify it is to look for a solid mass of brood, no missed spots in the pattern. The bigger the pattern with no misses, the better it is. Thanks for watching. God's peace Steven.

    Hi Mr. Ed,
    Looking at the first bee hive you went through and listening to you talk about it has me thinking they are probably descendants from the dirt roosters bee genetics. He may be wanting his royalty rights from them. 😂🤣😂
    God bless you.

    I'm happy to see a follow-up on hives that come from those cut-outs. So fascinating how the bees cut those rubber-bands and drag them out of the hive! I do have a question on that hive that didn't have any brood when you did the cut-out. If you hadn't seen any brood on this inspection, how do you handle that? Anyway, happy to see they are doing well! Thank you for the update!

      Had I not seen any brood, I would have left the bees alone. One way or another, it will work itself out. Either the hive dies or thrives, I do my part, the rest is in God's hands. I'm just very happy things turned out this way. God's peace.

    Just kill the grass and plant clover around the hives. You'll never have to mow near the bees, and they will love the clover.

      With our humidity and warm weather here in Louisiana, grass and weeds take over everything in a blink of an eye. Thanks for your suggestion and for watching. God's peace Dean.
