      Yeah but what he doesn’t understand is that we aren’t in his level. We don’t comprehend his method of doing things yet. That’s why people are having trouble understanding him.

    Your video shows just how hard it is to film and explain this. Good effort. My advice to anyone is to watch several different videos. Bit by bit it all clicks. Also a phone app gives you all the information about rafter lengths.

    I watch a lot of video an it is of my opinion that you made it easy with the step method and figuring the math became easier

    Thank you I admire your effort to take time and make this video..however it’s hard to follow the method because there’s no close up of the crucial measurement, try to get someone to help with filming 👍

    I love how you explained this it's so much easier if I don't have a calculator which I don't. I've been installing calculator apps on my phone and they suck. I don't live in the USA and I can't purchase one unless I order one.

    The easiest way to make a rafter is to sit on your couch with a beer and hire a carpenter.

  • @danwheeler5130
    @danwheeler5130 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    your correct with your method and I've done 100s of times so I understood but I think where people lost you is with the speed square I use only the carpenters square with rafter clips also in the end you should have shown cutting for the ridge pole but you do know how to lay out a rafter

    Nice vid buddy.
    At 0:27 you had the look of someone who sees a parking attendant walking up to their car and looking into your window for your permit which you're sure is still valid................isn't it?! 😲🤣

    If you learn to read the framing square, it will tell you exactally how long the rafter has to be cut from end to end. The cut out should be the same width as the outside wall which in most cases is 3.5 inches.The framing square has all the numbers for the length of the rafter for the pitch you choose to use.

    1. Why did you have 2 speed squares? 😕
    2. Why did you put acorns on a speed square? 🤔
    3. Why does dimensional lumber; comes 3/4 shorter than what it is? 🤔

    Throw your speed square away and use the framing square thats what it made for. Want to see you cut a 16 foot rafter in a chop saw

    Doing the math is THE most accurate way to lay out rafters not the step method!!!

    • @VegaChastain
      @VegaChastain 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      not really, generally it is always better to scribe or use a chalk line then to measure or calculate, and alot easier. a framer who wants to cut a birds mouth using math (more true if not able to use a calculator) will be just figuring out where he needs to mark a line when a framer who just takes a framing square and scribes a line for the rigde and seat cut, then marks the rest of the seat cut with a speed square already has his template for the rest of the rafters. framing work is not the place to spend alot more time and effort just to get something maybe a 16th better, as long as your work is square, plumb, and level, you will be fine:)

    You seem like a nice guy. That was painful to watch....never use a speed square to layout a rafter. ....rafters are much more involved than that and codes vary...
    But " dead hieght" the vertical distance from the top of the wall to the top of the rafter at the outside frame, must meet code and also sets the " drop" the distance from the top of the wall to the Bottom of the lowest soffit cut......., download " construction master pro" much easier to use,...
    Moving a framing square multiple times is very inaccurate,..
