      @@angelrebekah9153 because there is privilege with the types of hair that people have, even within the curly hair community. Black women have been actively discriminated against and oppressed because of their hair type and the curly girl method can be traced back to black women reclaiming their natural hair and actively fighting against the discrimination and stereotypes against natural African hair. No need to get defensive-just educate!

    Love that Sierra shouted out the Black women who pioneered the curly girl method!! Black people have been persecuted for their natural hair for literal centuries, and their innovation in this aspect was borne out of necessity, since there was no mainstream representation, tools, or products for them to use. Important that large, white creators like Sierra keep giving credit where credit is due 💛

    My hair isn’t curly by any means. In fact, it can’t even hold a curl for an extended time- even after dousing it in Hairspray. But you’ve inspired me to take a cleaner approach to my hair as far as being more mindful with the products I use, and I don’t think I’ve ever felt my scalp so free from build up! The silicone sulfate free shampoo that I use just took away all of that buildup that I didn’t realize I had on my scalp, and it feels great!
    So while my hair may not be curly, using better products for my hair completely changed how it feels.

    • @jasminelambert3753
      @jasminelambert3753 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Honestly I think most people could benefit from using at least some CGM products. And you don’t have to buy expensive stuff. Maui moisture and not your mothers have really inexpensive products that work super well and are really nourishing to the hair. Even suave has some CGM products that are super inexpensive! Sulfate shampoos strip your hair and silicone conditioners mask that by coating it in silicone. Using actual moisturizing products really does help and make most people’s hair look and feel better!

      I’ve had A LOT of women in my chair ( hairstylist here) who had NO idea they had curls... a bunch of times they came in for a soft perm - I showed them that they had curls so they didn’t need the perm :)
      I’ve even grown up with what I thought was stock straight hair - until I tried styling it naturally curly...
      The BIGGEST no no that most people do and why they think their hair i straight - it they brush it after washing...

    I definitely agree with the premise that CGM doesnt have to be all or nothing. I feel like sometimes people make it out to be that it has to be this intense routine or nothing at all haha I've been doing CGM-ish, I like to say. I try and use high-quality things and not obsess over if something is 100% CG or not. I've been doing this for about 2ish years and I'm so used to seeing my hair wavy/curly, I feel like I dont look like myself if my hair is straight haha

      I used to have really greasy hair too and was appalled at the idea of not washing every day. But over time, actually not a choice due to health issues, I started 3x a week, the now 2x a week and my hair adjusted. Your hair creates oils in response to scrubbing out the oils with a sulfate shampoo or washing too frequently, it’s stripping. So I’m CGM and I wash 2x a week and do great!

    I found your channel when you initially started the CGM and i was currently on my journey too. Amazing to see how much your hair has changed and it made me insanely happy to see how much you've embraced your natural curls/waves. And also thank you for acknowledging the black community and their contribution to natural hairstyles 🥰

    You should try a middle part so your hair would be more cohesive on both sides. The thicker side curls worse because you've exposed the underlayers.

      And a specifically curly cut! I think she could get some really pretty shape and volume with the right cut. You would think cutting hair off would create less volume, but with curly hair if it’s layered right, it can actually create more!

    i’m so glad that the online community is accepting the “modified cgm” approach more and more. the curly girl method was developed about 20-30 years ago, and cosmetic chemistry has advanced SO much since then, for example water soluble silicones and bonding products like olaplex and curlsmith are everywhere now. also, shampoos, even ones with sulfates, are formulated to be much less drying these days! all these advancements make it less necessary to be strictly cgm while still having healthy happy hair!

      Honestly I think some of use actually spend less time per week on our hair. I wash mine once per week. It takes longer than most people with straight hair, but most people with straight hair wash it like every day or every other day. The only thing I do between washes is put a little water or hair oil in to tame my frizz and refresh certain pieces. It can be pretty low maintenance if you want it to be!
