The fake ads from the beginning played in the theater, mixed in with the real trailers, with zero warning. It was one of the greatest things I've ever seen in the theater.
Hahaha everyone was so confused including me and my brother for a second or two. So much fun to see this movie in theater.
NGL, I think it would have been so funny if they took it one step further and actually made those fake movies into real ones.
I worked at a theatre at the time and people came out to complain that there were too many trailers.

The DVD commentary is hilarious for two reasons:
- RDJ remaining in character for the whole thing.
- Jack Black randomly eating during the commentary.

I’m a black man, and I can honestly tell you: RDJ as a black man was the funniest thing I’ve ever seen! It wasn’t offensive, Over the top or anything at all. It was hilarious!!!! When I watch iron man and he yells, all I hear is this character.
That's why it's so weird to me that she gets slightly offended...? In my experience, people who get offended by black jokes that aren't offensive, don't have many black friends or aren't cultured.

She isn't just watching this on her own, she has to always think about what her audience of the public will think of her if she laughs or likes certain jokes. Totally understand her hesitation to laugh at RDJ in blackface. To her its, "What if everyone hates me for liking this?". One wrong laugh or word to something and she loses something she enjoys perhaps. I honestly don't think it has anything to do with being "offended"... Just scared/uncomfortable... and being uncomfortable around certain types of jokes is fine.
Natalie, I'm black and I loved RDJ's character. I also don't know any black people who dislike his portrayal in this movie. His lines from the theme song of "The Jefferson's", being a dude disguised as another dude, and "you people" is often quoted by black people that watched the movie. In other words, he played the character well and it was received by the black community for what it is, a joke in good taste.

In the movies actually DVD commentary doesn’t drop character while jack black and Ben stiller are laughing there asses off the whole time and trying to play along. I think even a few people missed the humor and connection in that when they watched the commentary.
What makes it even funnier: as his character deconstructs from Lazarus back to who he really is, RDJ reverts along with him. You don't actually hear the 'real RDJ' until the closing credits...

I'm dyslexic, autistic, black and Hispanic. Today I learned white people being offended for me somehow still feels even more offensive. I would rather enjoy that movie a 100 times.

At the very least she kept it to herself and didn't give us some speech at the end it's almost like she was scared to laugh but also scared to pander

I totally agree with you!!! I loved this movie and totally got the humor and what they are making fun of. I laughed out loud at the theater and still today as I watch it again. RDJ’s character is the offensive guy, the method actor that takes it too far, not RDJ himself. Actually he plays this character brilliantly. People getting offended by this does nothing or to decrease discrimination. They just don’t get the actual point of the movie or of comedy. You can laugh, it’s ok! 😅

Tom Cruise and Robert Downey Jr. took this movie to the next level. Some of the best performances of their careers.
You really can't help but admire both of their absolute and utter commitment to roles. And both are far funnier than you'd ever expect.

Technically what Downey is doing is not blackface, because the point of blackface was to ridicule black people, that's not what is going on in this film and the fact that a black man in the film calls the Downey character out on it should have made it clear to people. This is a subversion of Bf if anything. Like I said, a lot of people miss the entire satirical aspect of the film and that some actors take the "method" too far.

The campaign got pretty big for a couple of weeks before it died out. The reason it died out is because A) you can't deny how funny the movie is, funny trumps offensiveness and B) the movement was spearheaded by white people being offended for black people but the majority of black people didn't care because of point A.

I was in Iraq when this came out and we nabbed a bootleg copy to watch as a Platoon. Was one of my best memories with the guys.
I always add Josie and the Pussycats to my "sarcastic movies that poke an industry in the eye" list with Tropic Thunder. Josie mocks pop culture, celebrity worship and the music business all at the same time.
Blazing Saddles, Tropic Thunder and JoJo Rabbit should all be on the same shelf, waiting for the in-laws to visit.

It’s perfectly ok for you to watch and enjoy RDJ in blackface. The whole movie is a commentary on Hollywood’s eccentricities, excesses and hubris. He has been nearly universally acclaimed by every African-American I know in New Orleans as doing the impossible: pulling it off without offense and being genuinely funny. This is a satiric masterpiece that I have watched several times per year. I still laugh at it all!

Another fun thing about this movie is the we have an actor with dark hair and brown eyes playing a character with blond hair and blue eyes, who is playing a character in black face, who then in turn does yellow face while trying to rescue Stiller's character. Such a brilliant and original concept and execution.
This is one of the greatest comedies ever made! People that feel blackface or the simple Jack angle is insensitive, don’t understand that the joke is on Hollywood. From actors, to agents and the whole industry. From the opening trailers to ending at the award show, it’s genius satire, pointing the finger at themselves.
You should watch Anchorman if you haven’t. Another great comedy that’s one of the most quoted.
I second this statement. This movie, if anything, is a direct satire of the Hollywood standards of that time and was not intended to demean minorities or downplay the importance of cultural diversity.
The "Simple Jack" thing is also a bit like Kate Winslett as "Kate Winslett" in Ricky Gervais' Extras, noting that you can always win an Oscar for playing "a mental".

Tom Hanks had played Forrest Gump and won an Oscar, I forget who also did it, but they played gifted handicap people. During that time Sean Penn did a movie called I Am Sam where he played mentally challenge, but he played it too on the nose and didn’t win the Oscar. That’s where the joke came from that they tell him for Simple Jack he went too full retard. Making fun of Sean Penn & the Oscars, actors know what roles can get them an award, they have it down to a formula, not the actual handicap.
I wouldn't go that far. Definitely not one of the greatest comedies ever. It is hilarious though and very rewatchable.

Big hype on _Severance_ season 2 though. Totally different but still great. Guy's a good director.
Just like Blazing Saddles, which is another satirical film that people put in the category of "movies that could never be made today", even though the things both films satirize are still things that could easily be satirized today. It's almost like people so feel the need to be preachy, that they're willing to throw out the best tool in media for getting a message across and still having people watch the vehicle that message is being given in.
Between this and Walter Mitty, two extremely different films, Ben Stiller has ungodly levels of talent directing, acting, producing, just everything.

Not long after this movie came out and people were smoking that pretend weed "K2", which was just like chemical potpourri. I smoked some with the homies and they put this movie on and it had me tripping out and that scene in particular had me losing it. Laughing and terror lol

Tropic Thunder is the pinnacle of the 2000s golden age of comedies.
This might technically be an "action comedy", but really what makes it so enduring with people is that it's basically a satire of the whole Hollywood culture. From the sleazy producer who doesn't care if people die during the shoot, to the pretentious method actor who goes into blackface for a part (as opposed to using the *actual* black guy in the cast).
Quotable as hell, too.
The jokes in RDJ's character, alone, have more layers than an onion. It could be one of the most deeply meta characters in a movie, ever. Love it.
"stop tailgaiting me, pasty teabag", not sure if a shot at him for being white, or being british, but its a funnily weird insult.
A few suggestions. "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" for more comedy RDJ. Also Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" is a hidden gem. It's definitely a movie, that stays with you.

I was 18 when I watched this in the theater. As a black man, seeing Iron Man in blackface but with hilarious context was the best thing ever. Dude deserved getting a Best Supporting Actor nomination at the Oscar's for this role 😆

People forget that context is important, just because someone paints their face black doesn't make it "blackface", blackface is historically a very derogatory action against black people, this was an upbeat comedy and he was pretending to play a black role, it's a completely different thing that most people just don't get, also RDJ has stated he couldn't make this movie today for this very reason, the comedic immunity clause is vaporizing rapidly and you have the school systems and society to thank for it, too bad, Sanford and Son is some racist ass $H!T but I still watch it today because it's damn funny

The things taught to students can be different even in the same subject and school depending on which teacher you happen to get. It's really sad how these days almost everyone has been conditioned to find something like this uncomfortable. They're like unable to first see or hear something, then process it and think independently. They just feel or react as they are told by society/media/government, etc.
I was a combat medic and 82nsd Airborne, where most Special Forces, Ranger Battalion, Delta wannabes end up when they wash out of whatever elite training they couldn't handle. The 82d Airborne, where they have female soldiers who refuse to jump out of airplanes and still get a maroon beret. Anyway, since I left the Army and work in surgery at the VA I run into veterans who lie about their accomplishments, deployments, etc.... Nick Nolte played this comic but very real character to perfection.
It's funny to me how some white people have an issue with the black face while all the black people I've seen react to this movie have no problem and they think it's hilarious. Robert Downey Jr. seems to have pulled off the impossible.
Because white sjw type people think they need to treat other races like morons that can't make their own decisions and get offended on their behalf.

I'd assume it's mostly virtue signaling from whites who feel the need to cleanse their "guilt." A lot of the rest can be chalked up to people who've been told certain things are wrong, always, under any circumstances wrong, but never took the time to figure out just WHY it's wrong.
There's some interviews out there about how Tom Cruise got involved in this. During his sit down with Ben Stiller he said he'd do it, but "I need to have fat hands, and I need to dance. I don't know how to play this character otherwise."

I knew this wasn't gonna go well when "I don't find fart jokes funny" happened in like the first 60 seconds. SO many people have filmed reviews of Tropic Thunder and just laughed like a normal human.
This movie is so intelligently written, it’s such an amazing satire on the ridiculousness of Hollywood and actors, I also love that they don’t forget, that none of the actors know that Four leaf has hands, so when RDJ character is talking to him in the rescue, midway through what he’s saying, he just stops and says “fu©️k, you have hands!”, it’s such a great comedic beat. Then at the end, we find out the “Lance” Alpa Chino was referring to was Lance Bass from N’Sync, who’s at the awards show with him.
Bill Hader’s performance is small but also brilliant, he works into his performance, if you just watch him, you can see he’s always watching Les, trying to figure out the best thing to say & do to follow his lead, like a great “Number 2”, who’s frightened to death of the “Number 1”.
Another Brilliant, often overlooked comedy from the early 2000’s, is “Team America: World Police”, the film is made almost entirely with puppets and it’s a comedic masterpiece!
I never seen someone cringe at Robert Downey’s character the whole movie. It’s okay to like it. I promise, you won’t get cancelled.

The RDJ blackface is actually okay amongst the community because he’s portraying how real actors think they can do every role and how Hollywood will cast a character to play a role not native to them when they could’ve just got an actor who actually fit the role. This movie brought a level of comedic brilliance that i didn't think Stiller had in him. And i never laughed so hard at being so wrong while watching this movie the first time.
Natalie, it's not RDJ in black face. He portrays an actor who's undergone operations and medical pigmentation to play a black character. It's not RDJ painting his face black to ridicule black race out of hatred and disdain, it's his character who's taking pains to be as believable as possible, only taking it into stereotypes. If anything, the movie takes a poke at SJWs who think they know better but become/turn out to be (involuntarily but inevitably) racial by their use of assumptions and generalisation. Plus, black people know how to laugh at themselves too when jokes are done by not-assholes (and RDJ is definitely not an asshole).

RDJ’s performance was always meant to be a satire about arrogant actors who think it’s okay to do that sort of thing for a film. It’s why it worked so well, people that were offended by it or got super mad about it sorta missed the point of what he was doing

I keep seeing young reactors having issues with the optics of certain jokes. So much so that it appears to prevent them from fully enjoying the humor.
I saw this type of reaction with a reaction channel watching the _Legend of Korra._ The character of _Varrick_ can be so funny. But these reactors can't get past the fact that he's also kind of a terrible human being. That's one of the things that makes him so funny.
They either find something so problematic that the joke loses its flavor. Or perhaps they don't feel they have permission to laugh at something that is clearly offensive to some.🤷🏼♂️

It's almost as if they trained themselves just so that they get as little criticism as possible at the expense of actually enjoying whatever content they're reacting to (which I guess kinda makes sense since they're doing this in front of everyone on the internet.)

Oh come on, RDJ was hilarious and absolutely brilliant. He did get nominated for an oscar for this and would have won if it wasn't for heath ledfger's joker. Satire is not for everyone, but the fact that is movie may not be made today is an absolute disgrace.
Satire has always been a sticky method of ridiculing society, because depending on your society, if your satire isn't exaggerated enough, there are going to be people out there that take it at face value. Now that we live in this generation and its "cancel culture" that seems to not want to see the context in which something is being done, satire is even more difficult to pull off.

Downey was nominated for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar (as well as a Golden Globe, a SAG, and a BAFTA) for the role of Kirk Lazarus. Might darn near have won it too, had it not been the same year Heath Ledger had played the Joker in The Dark Knight. Yeah. It was that long ago. Cruise got a Golden Globe nom for Les Grossman.

Yes, RDJ did get some backlash over the blackface, and yes, it was from the most vocal members of a group pretending it represented the entire group.
However it was enough that he was hesitant when Jamie Fox asked him to play a Hispanic character in a comedy skit he was doing, before Jamie reassured him that nearly all of the black community loved him and his character in Tropic Thunder.

The whole Simple Jack thing was directly inspired by Cuba Gooding Jr's, Radio. It's making fun of the fact that actors will use disabilities as fodder for acclaim.

I figured it was mostly based on I am Sam. Simple Jack's hairstyle is very similar to Penn's in that movie. Could be drawn from both, I guess.
I thought it was satirizing all the oscar winning actors playing disabled characters from Being There to Rain Man to Forrest Gump. It's a trope by this point that playing a disablled character will pretty much net you an academy award.

The black face worked because no one in the movie thought it was a good idea but the characters doing it. It was never really depicted as being a positive idea. I liked how the actual black man was always, always offended and insulted. What a great depiction of a terrible, racist concept.
99% of the people I’ve seen complain about the blackface are Woke white women. Practically every black person I’ve ever seen online or talked to in person thought it was hilarious.

This is a movie that basically called out everything that's wrong with Hollywood: casting white actors in roles that should go to black or asian actors, endless sequels to action movies, gross out comedies that are utterly demeaning (and where good actors' careers go to die, for example Eddie Murphy in The Klumps, producers that don't give a damn about actor safety, frauds trying to make money off of peddling false war stories/biographies (author of Jarhead lying that he was a sniper; Frank Dux claiming to have been trained by a Ninjutsu master and being a CIA agent among other things ending up as a choreographer on several martial arts themed movies), rampant drug abuse by the actors, movie productions being a disorganized mess and/or treating locals as heavily underpaid extras, and so on.
Tropic Thunder, Blazing Saddles, Southpark etc. were at times crass and shocking... but there was always a point to all of this. Call things out, show how stupid they are, mock the racists and bigots and so on. And that's why Tropic Thunder remains one of the greatest, smartest, but also really out there comedies. A real gem in the vast sea of "let's make fun of overweight people/mentally disabled/minorities/etc." garbage movies.
Interestingly, it falls on the other side of the thin line where another Jack Black film, Shallow Hal, just about falls on the wrong side of. It mocks people who mock people for their appearance, but also wants to make fat jokes.
The late Patrice O'Neil said that this whole movie was made to send up everyone, just so they could finally show how awful producers are. Tom Cruise was magnificent.
I agree we should not cast white actors in the roles of black or asian characters. But we should also not cast black or asian actors in the roles of white characters which is extremely popular in Hollywood today.
Oh loosen up, Nat. The entire point of RDJ’s character was how inappropriate/ridiculous his blackface performance was. It was a meta joke in good taste executed to the highest degree. He was literally nominated for an Oscar for it. A quick scan of just the comments on this video show how well-received his performance was by the black community.

In an interview Tom Cruise said when they approached him about doing the movie he said the only way he would do it is if his character had very large hands.
If you really look you can see that his character's hands are relatively large for his arms and body.
There was an entire feature length in-universe documentary about the making of this film. All the main actors shot *so* much more footage for this film!
Watching Nat be as uncomfortable as she was with the off brand humor is almost better then the movie.

The reason why RDJ got away with blackface even when it was made, was because everyone got that it was calling out Hollywood's past and present, using white actors in ethnic roles. I'm not sure you purposely avoided the "You Don't Go Full R.....", but that was also a call out to award shows that give out statues for roles like that, and the actors that seek out those roles because they know it's an almost guaranteed nomination (and often a win), IE Dustin Hoffman, Billy Bob Thornton, Tom Hanks, etc. It's actually a brilliant takedown on Hollywood, it's overblown blockbusters, the excessive use of violence, the ridiculous deals, and the cult of celebrity itself. I think it's Ben Stiller's best comedy!
I think the reason that a lot of the current generation don't get the satire, is that they simply haven't watched enough movies, or know the history of Hollywood, and the awards. The film is rather scathing on it's look at the Industry, but unless you're kind of plugged into how that industry operates, a lot of it is going to go over your head. I doubt Natalie has ever seen Rain Man, Slingblade, or Being There.

I think Nat is more shocked than anything else. I can't really tell if she enjoyed it or not. I'm leaning towards not because at the end she tell us she doesn't ever want to see this again. Kinda surprising and sad, really. This is an amazing movie but I think she was put off by the black face of RDJ, almost like she's afraid to like it because of that.
Yeah, she really did strike me as kinda "clutching her pearls" a bit with this one. She is familiar with the film industry, so it did kinda strike me as odd that she didn't react to certain things and clear commentary on Hollywood-isms.

Perhaps you should try The Three Amigo's from the 80s. This was a film about a group of actors who are confused for their characters and who confuse the situation they are in. I don't know if this was something in the minds of the writers of Tropic Thunder, but this is a western type movie with Chevy Chase, Martin Short and Steve Martin.
Loved that movie.

Seeing people realize that it was Tom Cruise was one of the best moments I’ve had in the theater.
I don't really like going to theatres anymore, for a variety of reasons, and don't really miss it.... but seeing Tropic Thunder in the movie theatre was an unbelievable experience I'll never forget! 10/10
