Great advice , I'm going to share this with my daughter. About 15 years ago I we had a Irish setter , Maddie, (love of my life ) . This one night I put her in the garden for her last wee before bed. No joke, no more than 5 minutes later I checked and found a woman up my front path trying to drag her away. I shouted my husband, a car screeched off with its boot (estate volvo/ish) still open. I never, ever let her out again on her own. We also chained our front gate closed . I never left my second setter out on his own in the front either.

She only lets people say hello to her if i give her permission. Unlikely a dog thief is going to start asking you detailed questions about your dog. As it said in the video they want to distract you quickly and get away.
@@Putnamsmif yeah ofc, but actually theres a few people i know thats had there dogs taken after theyve had a conversation with a stranger the stranger kept making small talk and saying how gorgeous there dog is, and how much they know about there breed. I didn't know this was such a big problem in the UK. What is the reason for steeling?.Do they sell them after... or for Breeding? I am so sorry for all the people who lost there dog.
Yea usually sell them, it’s become a big problem since COVID because everyone is at home so the demand for dogs has gone way up... and in a lot of cases so has the price
@@Fuckthishandle1 ah OK. Here in Germany the price for dogs and cats also gone up. We have a problem with cats going missing. Mine is gone for over 2 weeks now. What a sick world.
I've owned dogs for over 60 yrs & even on country walks, my dog is always on a lead. I use a retractable lead so he can go ahead & read his pee-mail. This way I know my dog will not get into anything that could hurt him nor will he get lost or stolen. I have yet to lose a dog & a brisk game of tug of war or fetch helps to exercise them. And if you have kids or grandkids that like to go running, a dog is always good company. I think your advice is excellent & I am going to forward this because there are a LOT of people out there who could benefit from your advice. Thank you
@@tanatribe No, they can't but... on a lead he goes running with my son & grandson & he has a big back yard to play "fetch", "catch me", "tug-of-war" & "chase that darn squirrel"!! Best part, he's safe! Not even people can do everything they want. Unfortunately, this is not a perfect world!
As an added piece of advice: always carry in your pocket something like the Farb Gel Criminal Identifier Spray - it will shoot out a bright red dye at a distance of about 4 metres and takes about a week to wear off, so the criminal is identifiable. The police recommend it and you can spray it at the would-be thief’s head.

The penalty of stealing a dog is minor in Gt Britain. . People should use social media and distribute the information as to when the dog thief trial is being held and show up and show force in numbers.
The penalty is 7 years which is not minor. The issue is that the full penalty is not being applied. Too many people are wrongly focused on trying to change the law rather than ensuring the full weight of the existing law is applied
@@eddieoconnor8560 Agree 100% most laws aren't fully applied. if dog thieves were given a custodial sentence for their first crime and the full 7 years for a repeat offence then they wouldn't be doing it.
@@eddieoconnor8560 That's the MAXIMUM penalty, as dogs are classed as possessions and so stealing one is covered under The Theft Act in the same way as if a person stole your wallet. It's very unlikely that they will get anywhere near that as Police usually only investigate thefts over £500, and then if it goes to court it's likely to result in a Community Service order rather than jail time. The Home Secretary is specifically looking at introducing tougher sentences for pet thefts as the current law (which is about 50 years old) is simply inadequate.
@@malgrimace I know it’s the maximum. I know it’s covered by the Theft act 1968. So what. The maximum is more than sufficient. This ‘need’ for new laws is a blight . A new law would not change a thing . The theft of a dog just needs to be taken seriously. That is not a new law, just new guidance to the police and changes to sentencing. Remember that introducing new laws to cover offences already covered by existing laws is used to by politicians of all colours to pretend they are doing something whereas in reality just spending more on policing and criminal justice would deliver the same.

I live in a very rural area, people drive down here and just let their dog out of the car loose. then spend their walk on a mobile phone while their dogs run around loose. I see this so often as i am a horse rider. they suddenly have to gather the dog up because they are not paying attention. as you said to be alert.
In our training classes we should do an exercise where a stranger calls our dog and if he goes to the stranger nothing fun happens but if he goes back to the owners call its a massive reward and game etc. Do this a few times so the dog learns if i go to the strangers call its pointless but if i come back to my owners call and ignore the stranger i get the most fun.
Great to hear that you are doing this in training classes. You know you are getting it right if your dog checks with you every time they see a stranger. Please share with the rest of your group Lyndsey and let me know if there are any other areas where people feel a bit uneasy and we will cover them in our videos. Rgds Colin
I'm lucky ,in that my Border Collie ignores everyone else and their dogs except me,but it doesn't make me complacent ,cos who knows what a potential dog thief's tactics are,and that they might work on our dogs,it pays to be on guard
I think depends on the dog. My chihuahua never come to others when being called. But, he only came when he heard my voice. Now, I have a border collie, still a puppy. She also doesn’t come to others. Having a strong recall game is KEY. I can stop and recall my boy at a dead run after game, rabbit, squirrel, etc.. It saved him a couple weeks ago. Guy pulled up in his car, and had heard me call him, so knew his name. After talking to me from his car for a minute, he had his passenger door open, called my dog. I'm absolutely sure he wanted to get him in the car and take off with him. I recalled my boy immediately. If he weren't trained as well as he is, I'm sure he'd be gone right now. A 25 foot or more lead attached to your dog will let the dog run and explore and you still have the control. I use long horse leads to walk with the pooch. Useful also for long range obedience check ups.
Always train your dog on a recall. This is very important. Excellent video on the RATS . I have shared on my Facebook page. Well done yo you The Pet Detectives 👍
My dog took 1year and 6 months to get recall right. This was really good for him as he was a very very badly abused and very badly treated dog in Spain. He is a completely different fella now. @@chelleyd4020 I don't even know what to say to that...I can't even get my head around people that evil. They should be destroyed- we destroy rabid animals and they don't attack on purpose; people like that are worse than rabid animals- they do it on purpose. I am tired of the criminals getting away with it constantly and nothing is done. That said, I'd fight back with everything I have whether it's good enough or not and whether I got hurt or not. I'd never just stand there and let it happen and do nothing. I couldn't live with myself if I just stood there. Anyone willing to do that to take a dog (or another animal or a kid for that matter) has nothing but torture in store for that victim. So, I fight. Most criminals do not want victims that fight back because they don't want to get hurt. They aren't the only ones with weapons- the human body is a weapon. Use it and use it well. Some bas***** (I am monitoring my language best I can) tried something with my horse- this guy just wandered up on the farm and started messing with the horses. I was furious- and that overrode any fear. I confronted him with my pitchfork told him he'd be buried there if he didn't leave right then. It is unfortunate but in this day and age, you have to be suspicious of everything and everyone. Someone 2 weeks ago stopped in front of my home and began to approach the yard because my dogs were outside and they didn't see me sitting there-they just saw my dogs playing and pulled over. I marched my butt right over to the fence and those bas***** got back in the car and left. The law needs to step up, but pet owners need to step up too. Would they want what these people do to animals to happen to them? Kidnapped, abused and used as bait or sold? That answer no? Then people need to protect their pets. If people would fight for their kid, they should fight for their pets. A pet is not disposable because it's not a human. Too many people these days seem to think it's ok, and that angers me as much as the criminals and abusers. I am glad you told me what happened, as now if someone pulls any crap like that in my area I have some forewarning. And I certainly hope you and yours are safe.

The dog trackers only last 2 hours at most, we have a morning walk lasting one and a half hours, if the dog is lost for some reason towards the end of the walk (smelt food in the next street (she has a good nose) or is stolen) the tracker will run out of power, so would be useless. I would like a tracker that lasts a week. My dogs are family.
My dog looks like a mini werewolf, (meant to be a Jack Russell but he didn’t get the memo) he’s elderly, a vets dream with health issues, and he’s been an absolute A’hole of a dog his entire 14 years of life....yesterday afternoon I went for a walk near my home and noticed two guys coming from different directions towards me, one then sat on a low wall as if he was waiting, I live in a small town and Iv never seen these guys before, very dodgy looking ,and had their faces completely covered . I turned around and went back the way I came around the corner, even though it was very obvious. The guy that was on the other side of the road from me slowed a little but carried on walking, and the other guy got up and walked past the end of the road and was looking towards me as he crossed the road. I’m very small but I was totally ready to deliver a throat punch if either of them came near my dog.
Thank you for your excellent advice. Scary times. When dog thefts rose I stopped walking my dog alone and only with my partner. Recently I have started walking her alone and happy to know I do most of these things, especially making sure she’s on the lead from the car to open space. I do carry treats but she doesn’t always know so I will start to do that. Thanks again
Hi Sophia the greatest risk is always around the car park. Sorry to hear you stopped you dog walks that should never happen. Please share the video with other dog owners the more that know where the thieves are lurking the easier it becomes to push then out of our carparks. Rgds Colin
Great advice, thank you. Good to realise I already do most of these, including constant scanning of the area, front and back and going to be near my dog if someone approaches, no matter who it is doing so. Women, even those with children in tow, are now stealing dogs, given the opportunity. Anyone can be used to distract you. I don't even fully trust the elderly if they get too close or take an unusual interest. Are they a distraction? Are they scoping for someone else? My first encounter with a potential dog thief was a scout who waited for me to pass by her then messaged her cohorts with details of my dog, including her name as she'd heard me call out to her. But I'd suspected something and taken the right actions. With covid social distancing, I don't let anyone get really close to me or my dog in most cases and it no longer rude to keep your distance. It's also good to know which questions not to answer from someone taking too much interest. How old is your dog? What's your dog's name? Thank you for the vid and the info
Hi Tara, we have not encountered elderly people involved in this type of dog theft. In most cases they tend to be a bit younger so when challenged they can leave the area quickly. They always work from a car or van and often don't have the right footwear on for the area. Rgds Colin
I do all of this everyday as a matter of course ... Great advice given as I see so many people constantly distracted when out with their dogs. The mobile phone is a menace ! Stop chatting on your phone people you are out for a walk enjoy the peace and quiet and most importantly the dedicated interaction with your dog.
thank you, Colin - so many important messages here - one -of the greatest distractions I see everywhere with dog owners is the mobile phone! Also there have reports of dog owners being attacked by these dog thieves perhaps one good reason for having a whistle/personal alarm with you

Hi Darcy, that's a good method to use. Not everyone who approaches will be up to mischief so it is always better to have a dog respond to a set command in any given situation. It means you stay in control especially around the risky parts of the walk.
My dog is my world, I love her so very dearly (I don't have kids so she's like my child!) and it really scares me hearing about all these thefts. I was wondering if you recommend those pet trackers? The only thing is obviously they can be taken off if spotted, and upon looking into it, there doesn't appear to be any that are super small that could be hidden under a harness etc.. However, perhaps even them being on for a short while if the worst happened could potentially be of good use? What do you think? There has been a post going around of a girl in my county the other day that got her hand slashed with a blade as a dog thief attempted to try and cut the lead to her dog. Thankfully she managed to pick the dog up and get away.
Someone above said the trackers only last 2 hours, so if your walk I’d 1.5 hours and you’re at the end of the walk you’d only be able to track it for half an hour before it turns off😔
I wouldn't walk a puppy off leash anywhere until they're older and well trained, but if you're in a high crime area, I'd never risk letting them off leash ever unless you have no choice, are in a confined area, and keep can keep a close eye on them. If someone tries to talk to you, ask them to hang on a sec. Put the lead back on your dog or pick him up, then help them. A decent person will understand. A thief will move on. I'd use the whistle technique, but whistling isn't my forte. lol However, I've had great success teaching dogs the word "cookie" .....works for every dog I've ever trained, especially the independant types for recall, even if their prey drive has been triggered (if I catch it early) and they've run off. Just say the word every time they're given a treat, then use it as a recall occasionally to see if they've made the connection. There are breeds out there that are more independant and instant obedience is not their thing. lol Just make sure you ALWAYS reward them with a treat or they'll never trust you and it won't work when you need it. Lot's of good methods out there.... just wanted to share my experience using one that's worked well for me. It could save your dog's life. Can't have enough good tools in your arsenal when training. ;-)
Greedy breeders hiking prices up as there are bored selfish people in lock down - “I’m bored, I know, I’ll buy a dog, that will entertain me and when I go back to work, I’ll shut it in a cage for 9 hours a day or re-home it”. There will so be so many dogs in shelters wanting homing in the near future. Right now, I am frightened to walk my dogs after all the horror stories of late. So thank you greedy breeders and thank you bored people.
@@bbud2611 As a small time landlord I have already seen this. Young couple, she works from home and he's out in the van. Circumstances change and she needs to be out all day as well. What about the small dog? Left indoors all day, that's what. Apart from being cruel to the dog, thousands of pounds worth of damage to floors from dog piss! There is going to be huge problems when people need to go back to work.
I never let my dogs get used to being picked up... I had walked a little too far ahead but I could still see my corgi, a bin man ran in the park and tried to pick him up, he turned around and bit the hand and was dropped.
I would like to add - never tell anyone your dog's name when asked. Give a false name, then they can't call your dog away from you. Also don't put your dog's name on a tag. Second, never answer questions about your dog such as has he been neutered, has she had puppies, is she entire, how much did you pay for him. A man tried to 'befriend' me on a walk and asked all/some of the above and then picked my dog up and tried to walk away. He couldn't get the lead off the harness - I was holding the lead - and I was able to jerk my mini daxy away, but it was scary and my dog was distressed. Then the man tried to coax him away but I had told him the wrong name and my dog ignored him.
OMG after watching this video I think I was encountering two RATS in our place where we regularly walk our dogs. The car park has a yellow sign saying that the police is investigating a crime. I thought it had to do with car theft or something else. Then when I get back to my car with our four dogs, there is a man and a woman walking kinda close to my car looking at their phones, as if they were figuring out where they were on google maps or something. I felt like they wanted to talk to me but they never did, so they felt a bit iffy. If I had watched this video before this occurred I would have flipped out my phone and videoed them! Thankfully all my dogs were on lead, I guess if they weren't they would have done the diversion tack tick on me!! This makes me feel ill thinking about what could have happened!
Hi Stine, if you feel uneasy then always trust your instinct. Distraction theft always increases at this time of year. Don't forget to let other dog walkers know about what you witnessed. It will only take a couple of people to pull out their phones and video them to drive the rats out of the area.
I have been approached by a young man demanding I give him my ball thrower and being a problem until I demanded he leave me and my dog alone. THAT time he went away but I was really worried and didn't return to that country park for a couple of weeks. Thank you for this. It is so worrying.
Such good sensible advice,I have a Border Collie and I never let him out of my sight, even when he's in the garden I'm right there with him.If he went missing I'd be dsitraught and I think he'd be really distressed too if some random stranger approached and took him.I'd never thought of dog thieves using the scent of a bitch in season, and I've been a dog owner all my life,so that was an eye opener for me.My boy doesn't like strangers, but the scent of a dog in heat might distract him to the point where he could be stolen, and who knows what happens to stolen pets after that, are they used for bait ? So thanks for this video, subscribed
We are trying to make it as easy as possible Elizabeth for dog owners to slightly change what they do but at the same time the small change should make a big difference. Rgds Colin
Excellent video thanks. I worry now because I have a JRT, nearly 8yrs old, one eyed, active. However, never off lead in carpark area, but when safe and away from some other dogs , then she is free. Good recall until she goes into hunting mode. Took 1/2 hr waiting while she was in a little bramble type copse of trees having, in her eye , the time of her life. Popped her head out to check I was still around then went back in🙄. She will generally ignore people and dogs unless it's her special friends and she doesn't like all dogs, especially pups and fluffy cute dogs so I do keep a strict eye on her ,getting her to come and put back on lead when I can see danger. In view of everything I have just listened too though, should I consider ever letting her off lead again 🙄. Thinking of moving to the country this year or next. When on hols it's just me and my dog.
Hi Victoria, I know the breed really well and my search dog has helped me recover several after they have got themselves stuck down a rabbit burrow. They can be a bit stubborn at times but heaps of character. Rgds Colin
I think I would say quite forcefully " sorry mate I have to concentrate on my dog there are scumbag theives about!" Also I would carry a heavy stick and be prepared to make a lot of fuss and noise we British are sometimes to meek and mild , you have to think as if your dog is your child and be prepared.
I carry a miniature can of hairspray in my pocket and usually when I have my boy out I also have one of those ball launchers,I wouldn't think twice about using either of them as weapons....such sick individuals that would think of stealing someones much loved pet,but sadly it happens nowadays and we need to be careful x
@@jessd3601 hair spray them with a lighter is a pretty good flame thrower and beat them round the face with the ball launcher whilst they are set alight, sounds pretty effective to me 😂
There has been an increase in this near me in the last few months. I’m hoping no one tries to steal my Akita when I’m walking him but I’ve taken security measures, I’ve taken his muzzle off!
It’s all common sense really, as a professional dog Walker for ten years I’ve always done this with my clients dogs. It’s surprising how many other CDW you see letting a horde of dogs pile out of van all off lead or talking on their phones then at end of walks I’ve seen them let dogs mooch about the car park while they chat to a passer by while loading a dog, with cars driving about, or walk a dog on a collar/harness they know the dog can slip out of. Or they know a dog has poor recall and let it go off. All the dog’s I walk have raptor bells on their collars so I can hear them as well as see them and I keep in a close group, regularly play nosework games to keep them together.
Where we live in the U.S. there are big up-ticks of dog thefts in March and November. The reason is there are dog auctions in April and December, where medical labs send people to buy dogs for experimentation. Please watch and protect your dogs!
Thank you Coraine, there are just too many dog thefts for us to reach everyone which is why we are now using videos to share our experience on dog thieves and how they operate Rgds Colin
Sadly, Annette we have dealt with quite a few thefts where people were on their mobile phones when their dogs were taken. The temptation to double task makes a lot of sense to busy people but most dogs will get up to mischief when they know their owners are distracted and this is exactly what the thieves are looking for. Rgds Colin
Train your dog to come when called and dont let it out of your sight as you are responsible for its behaviour and safety. Hardly any dogs obedient any more
Absolutely!!! I don't even let my dog's off their leads unless we're on MY property where they can't go anywhere.. too many dumb owners these days walking around with loose dogs that aren't trained ONE BIT! they'll let their dog run right up to yours like it's cute then get mad at YOU and act like you're the bad owner when your dog maul's theirs.. I always feel horrible if someone's dog gets hurt.. but, not my fault🤷
Thank you for sharing all your tips on keeping our dogs safe from dog thefts, have you got any flyers/posters that I could hand out when I take my dog for a walk, as I know your advice would benefit fellow dog walkers. Excellent advice Colin, thank you xx

Thank you. Sadly there are some irresponsible dog owners often letting their dogs off lead running off giving thieves an opportunity to steal or their dog to cause havoc frightening young children, knocking people over or annoying young pups on a lead
We have just released a new video showing that dog thieves come in all shapes and sizes, ages and genders. There is just too much money in illegal breeding and some people will pay way over the normal price to acquire the dog they want.
Than you so much . I have a Australian labradoodle he 27 weeks old and very wary of strangers. We haven been to the park yet only round our streets but he stay on his lead all the time . He is very food oriented so we avoid most people .
A flip top swartz Cayenne pepper dispenser is always a good thing to keep about your person in an easily accessible pocket..... just in case you buy a sandwich and it is a bit bland :). Other brands are available.
In Oregon USA, its lawful to “open carry” a gun and so we do. Its more for protection against coyotes, bears and cougars, however, if someone grabs my dog......well, its at their own risk.
Thanks for this. Dog theft of certain breeds has started happening here in NZ as well. I Always find information like this handy thanks. We have a year old cocker spaniel who likes to go out into the Bush. It’s good to get some tips re keeping him safe as he’s very friendly and daft as a brush.
I don't have a dog as yet, but it surprises me that there is a demand for stolen dogs as im guessing most new owners are looking for a puppy or young dog. Im guessing these will be higher risk of being stolen. Do they take older dogs too ? If so why ?
me too, I have 2 Rottweilers, albeit super soft but the people do not know that. I am only 5ft but come near my dogs- You will see my vicious side which is a Rottweiler X Jack Russell ;)
Live in so GA. Thought the same thing about my 2 pit bulls-one of which weighed in at 94lbs. Car followed me home one night-realized they wanted them for dog fighting. Carried a cattle prod after that.
@@NanaBeth1 Wow that's pretty scarry. In Australia we don't have the problem of dogs getting grabbed from their owners, instead they tag houses with dogs and come back at night and steal them. My dogs are always locked inside when Im not home and they sleep inside at night.
Really goods tips, thank you for sharing. I hope I never have to put them into practice. So help me the dog thief would need surgery to remove my car keys from his eyes!!
First thing i taught my dog was recall and on walks i would hide behind tree's. this method has always taught my dogs to look for me and be alert. Something i learnt myself as a kid and have owned dogs for 50yrs. Dog thieves are scum, nothing else.
My dog is neutered and won't accept treats from strangers (seen from experience) but that definitely does not make me complacent I'm always on alert knowing someone may snatch him from me
Recall is harder now my very active 13 year old Jack Russell is old and stone deaf. It's reaching extending lead permanently on, on walks away from home time, sadly. She was always so good at recall when she could hear. Now she gets a bit confused and tries to find me, in the wrong direction, poor girl. Big arm signals work well, but only when she is looking towards me. Little question, are car parks like National Trust ones where you have to pay an attendant to get in to an estate much safer? I imagine they would be. Not being complacent, the dogs go on leads anyway in car parks so they don't get run over!
I don’t even have a dog, sadly, but I would go insane if this happened. Thanks for the useful information. Are all dog breeds at risk of being nabbed ? I tend to think a GSD would be safer ?
I am appalled by the laws in the U.K. regarding self-protection. I carry a stun gun and pepper spray when I walk my dogs in the evening here in California. So far, the stun gun has only been used on a large aggressive dog attempting to maul my small dogs. A no-contact Zap is usually enough to turn aggressive dogs away...the sound of the electrical discharge is scary. Failing that, a Zap on the nose does the trick. I don't converse with strangers much, but will mention that my dogs are less aggressive since the neutering.
Joshua if we were permitted to carry them in the UK they would sell out in a week. The police seem indifferent to the number of women who have been attacked whilst walking their dogs
@@PetDetectiveTV It's seems as if regular people are simply meant to accept attacks by thugs as "the new normal". Police action will be directed at the victim if they do more than verbally protest. Even from across the pond it's painful and frustrating to watch.

I'm in Oregon, USA. So sad to learn this is an issue in the UK. I'm envious that you have such large walking areas to enjoy with your dogs. Here we have what are called dog parks, which are areas fenced with chain link for dogs to play with each other or chase a ball off lead. These areas are tiny compared to what I saw in this video. Usually there are two separate areas -- one for large dogs and one designated for small dogs. Unfortunately, some people don't pick up after their dogs so feces can be problematic. Also, occasionally dogs that are not properly socialized start fights with other dogs. One needs to understand the warning signs and be ever vigilant while their dog is loose in the dog park. Too many people think it is a social hour, get to chatting with others and stop paying attention to their dog and the attitude of other dogs in the park. Because I prefer to exercise along with my dog we seldom use the dog parks, which means my dog must always be leashed. It would be lovely to have the beautiful country car parks that you have. Sadly, due to people not obeying the rules, we can no longer have our dogs off leash unless in the previously mentioned dog parks. As always a few bad apples that haven't bothered to properly train their dogs spoils it for the rest of folks. In this State we can open carry guns or conceal carry with a permit. A dog thief here runs the risk of being shot. Therefore, they prefer to steal dogs left alone in vehicles, yards, or tied up in front of businesses where dogs wait for their owners to return from shopping. Thieves don't want to deal with the owners who might shoot them so look for easy targets where the dogs are alone. One thing is certain, laws need to change for very stiff sentencing on both sides of the pond. This video was very well done demonstrating the safest way to enjoy your lovely car parks with your dogs.
Hi Roux, with so many dog lovers in the UK and with the right for people to cross land owned by other people it is a dog owners paradise. The public parks have some restrictions but most are dog friendly.
Hi Catherine, we both have a similar morning routine with our animals and at last the sun is starting to shine. If one tried taking any of mine, they’d find out I’d be worse than a dog, even if I saw someone trying to take anyone’s pup, they’d fear me the most. I’d need friends to bail me out!!

Nahhh. If you love it like I think you do it'd be 2 seconds, tops.
Thank you
I don’t think a dog can fully run or feel free on lead
A largish heavyish blunt object is also handy as well...... “because your dog like to chase after thrown sticks”..
I got that spray goes every where with me in my pocket ready to spray at a seconds notice.

A 25 foot or more lead attached to your dog will let the dog run and explore and you still have the control. I use long horse leads to walk with the pooch. Useful also for long range obedience check ups.
I wish the worst on those stealing dogs. It's like stealing someone's child.
How ever if I call him back and somebody else is there with a better offer than comming back to me I just daren't think of the result. That is why I carry a small can of the spray red jelly stuff nothing hurtful in it but by god will blast it in a dog snatchers eyeball no hesitation.
@@helencadwallader3796 Well Helen I have just bought myself whats called a "rape alarm" from Amazon and when used the noise is piercing and extremely loud but have to say I have a new puppy and am looking for dog walking groups in my area as I feel so unsafe walking my puppy alone! So glad I've found and subscribed to this wonderful site.
@@margaretmitchell5827 Colin is brill. I just found his site and I think he is kind to offer his help with the video's. He is some one you can connect with and as I said below he comes across in a lovely manner and nicely spoken. Take care of the pup hugs to pup from me and my hound.
Thank you so much very nicely and well spoken Colin. I am going to follow this advice 100%. I have no car but am worried that dog thief's can snatch your dog lead and take your dog that way. Will watch all your video's and see if you have one for that kind of snatch. I would never use a mobile on my dog walk as that time is for my bestest friend ,my dog and I talk to him non stop. Thank you Colin.
My Mum is elderly, her little dog is her world, she is scared to take him for walks now, just lets him out in the garden now. I find it so sad that this is happening! I grew up having dogs, but now I am glad I don’t have one. My Mum’s dog is getting on now, she wanted to get another little dog, but is scared to, as a woman had her dog stolen at knife point, in Cornwall.
Hi Misty, knife point robberies are incredibly rare so its a shame your Mum has changed her walking habits. Is there not someone who can go with her on a walk?
Also, pls tell your mom not to leave her dog out in the yard unattended. A few people have been posting lately that their dogs have been snatched right from their yards.
@@carried9130 I just seen a video a few week ago of them knocking on doors and windows at night, continually til someone answers then break out retractable batons and 3 men force their way to hold you and take the dogs, the house had ring cameras filming the whole thing😔
Great video and sensible sound advice thank you! I’ve shared this a lot it’s the most sensible advice out there I’ve read so far.
Sad state of affairs but so necessary x
Thank you Lesa, I think because are dealing with dog theft on a weekly basis we know how and where most dog thieves operate. The more people who know this then in theory the harder it will become for the thieves to commit crimes without getting caught. Rgds Colin

Rgds Colin
Great job guys, found it both educational and fun to watch. 👏
Such good advice. Thank you so much. Good to know how these thieves operate and in what situations. Looking forward to next.
Is it safer to have a mongrel dog rather than an expensive pedigree for which people pay silly money?
I do all of this everyday as a matter of course ... Great advice given as I see so many people constantly distracted when out with their dogs. The mobile phone is a menace ! Stop chatting on your phone people you are out for a walk enjoy the peace and quiet and most importantly the dedicated interaction with your dog.
Completely agree.
Great information! I’m in the US, but I subscribed to your channel because I’m sure this is happening here too! Thank you!!
thank you, Colin - so many important messages here - one -of the greatest distractions I see everywhere with dog owners is the mobile phone!
Also there have reports of dog owners being attacked by these dog thieves perhaps one good reason for having a whistle/personal alarm with you
I absolutley hate to see owners walking their phones while the most important thing in their life trots along behind

i teach my dogs , yes dogs large breed . i Teach the dogs to Hold ,when leashed or off leash if you come up on my dogs and grab the leash or try to lure the dog it will lay down . Boo my 8 year old female is 167 pounds , Copper my male is at 10 month old is 92 pounds good luck moving them , we randomly test this by having ppl try to take the dogs. i have done this with every dog iv had for the last 30 plus years and it works .
You can have them chipped. I don't know whether you can include a gps?
@@Faith_Chi Some actually cut the chip out 😔
Someone above said the trackers only last 2 hours, so if your walk I’d 1.5 hours and you’re at the end of the walk you’d only be able to track it for half an hour before it turns off😔
Great advice thank you. I do worry as my Frenchie is getting slower as he’s getting older. I’ve taken note of everything you’ve said. 🙏🏼
Can't have enough good tools in your arsenal when training. ;-)
So sad that this is such a problem when there are so many dogs that need rescuing.
My thoughts exactly, and soon the shelters will be full of lockdown dogs for free.
Stephanie schermi ,i have had my lead cut twice ,my dog is vicious that saved her .
They’re not stealing because they can’t afford to buy / these are criminals who will re sell your dog or worse
It will only take a couple of people to pull out their phones and video them to drive the rats out of the area.
this is excellent so needed these days
If you haven’t, get him neutered.
Thank you, this was really useful. Our dog is 10 and it's always good to revise security.
We are trying to make it as easy as possible Elizabeth for dog owners to slightly change what they do but at the same time the small change should make a big difference. Rgds Colin
Thank you for the extremely important and helpful tips 👍🐕😀
Glad you liked the video Judy there is more to come over the coming weeks and months
Rgds Colin
I couldn't mine has bit someone before and I ain't letting her off it for that reason trained or not it's on the leash
Brilliant advice, thank you I wasn't aware but now I am. I will ever pass this on.
I carry a miniature can of hairspray in my pocket and usually when I have my boy out I also have one of those ball launchers,I wouldn't think twice about using either of them as weapons....such sick individuals that would think of stealing someones much loved pet,but sadly it happens nowadays and we need to be careful x
Neither of those sound like they would be very effective weapons, unfortunately.
@@jessd3601 hair spray them with a lighter is a pretty good flame thrower and beat them round the face with the ball launcher whilst they are set alight, sounds pretty effective to me 😂
Try carrying fly spray its far more toxic.
Thank you Colin, video liked and shared 👍 🐕
Where we live in the U.S. there are big up-ticks of dog thefts in March and November. The reason is there are dog auctions in April and December, where medical labs send people to buy dogs for experimentation. Please watch and protect your dogs!
What a horrible story.
Thank you ! I just got my puppy and I need this advice 😁
Thanks. Never thought about these but they make sense. I'm going to share with friends.
Thank you Coraine, there are just too many dog thefts for us to reach everyone which is why we are now using videos to share our experience on dog thieves and how they operate Rgds Colin
Excellent - especially about mobile phones!
Sadly, Annette we have dealt with quite a few thefts where people were on their mobile phones when their dogs were taken. The temptation to double task makes a lot of sense to busy people but most dogs will get up to mischief when they know their owners are distracted and this is exactly what the thieves are looking for. Rgds Colin
Thank you so much, very practical and clear advice .
You are welcome Jane
Train your dog to come when called and dont let it out of your sight as you are responsible for its behaviour and safety. Hardly any dogs obedient any more
Absolutely!!! I don't even let my dog's off their leads unless we're on MY property where they can't go anywhere.. too many dumb owners these days walking around with loose dogs that aren't trained ONE BIT! they'll let their dog run right up to yours like it's cute then get mad at YOU and act like you're the bad owner when your dog maul's theirs.. I always feel horrible if someone's dog gets hurt.. but, not my fault🤷

In Oregon USA, its lawful to “open carry” a gun and so we do. Its more for protection against coyotes, bears and cougars, however, if someone grabs my dog......well, its at their own risk.

Sound advise indeed. But should really be common sense to most folks. But as you say it is very easy to be distracted.
I don't have a dog as yet, but it surprises me that there is a demand for stolen dogs as im guessing most new owners are looking for a puppy or young dog. Im guessing these will be higher risk of being stolen. Do they take older dogs too ? If so why ?
I'm lucky having a German Shepherd, nobody will be able to nab him. I also lock him in n the house when I'm out so his safe and warm
me too, I have 2 Rottweilers, albeit super soft but the people do not know that. I am only 5ft but come near my dogs- You will see my vicious side which is a Rottweiler X Jack Russell ;)

@@NanaBeth1 Wow that's pretty scarry. In Australia we don't have the problem of dogs getting grabbed from their owners, instead they tag houses with dogs and come back at night and steal them. My dogs are always locked inside when Im not home and they sleep inside at night.

First thing i taught my dog was recall and on walks i would hide behind tree's. this method has always taught my dogs to look for me and be alert. Something i learnt myself as a kid and have owned dogs for 50yrs. Dog thieves are scum, nothing else.
Thank you for this.
You are welcome thanks for watching
Thank you so much for this helpful awareness video.
That's good to hear Dee. We will release more over the coming weeks. So please let other dog owners know about our channel. Rgds Colin
Not many people approach me when out with my dog but good luck trying to take him the would be thieves would be leaving with a couple of floppy limbs
Great advice. What can you do if they challenge you and take your dog? I have heard of several cases like this. Thank you.
The answer to me is: would you fight to protect your kids? If so, there is your answer- you fight to protect your dog.
My dog is very protective of me and i of it x
Thank you so much 😊
Very insightful. Thank you so much:)
I don’t even have a dog, sadly, but I would go insane if this happened. Thanks for the useful information. Are all dog breeds at risk of being nabbed ? I tend to think a GSD would be safer ?
Note to people in the UK: while pepper spray is not legal for self protection, Deep Heat certainly is, and it comes in handy small pocket size cans.

Thanks for the tips 💕💕
No problem!!
Excellent thank you
Hi Catherine, we both have a similar morning routine with our animals and at last the sun is starting to shine. I have a new video out, more of a documentary short about the influence of organised crime on the illegal puppy trade. I am trying to get the message across to everyone who is thinking about acquiring a new puppy with some very practical advice on how to get it right and not buy a puppy born from a stolen dog. I would love to hear what you think? Uncovering the Shocking Truth Behind Dog Theft the Illegal Puppy Trade & Organised Crimeth-cam.com/video/_0xMadIVi84/w-d-xo.html Regards Colin
So much common sense here...
Interesting comment on dog whistles...
Good points, thank you.
Hi Zarah, we will have our next video up next week and released another today which covers our latest recovery of a Corgi stolen from a 95 year-old woman in Yateley. We are trying to reach as many people as possible to get the message out about how people can be more careful but without ruining the joy of walking a dog in our incredible countryside. Rgds Colin
Thankyou. Good advice.
Really good advice thanks.
If one tried taking any of mine, they’d find out I’d be worse than a dog, even if I saw someone trying to take anyone’s pup, they’d fear me the most. I’d need friends to bail me out!!
