    Tunnels are sometimes the best bits, they are all different, internal shapes vary considerably, some are very narrow and have one way timings, some have several kinks in them whereas some newer ones have a towpath, are double width and some even have lights in them. Some are very wet, yet others barely dribble. Like the side ponds, run offs,lobster pot weirs,odd channels etc. Amazing variety of styles and lock furniture varies a lot too. Some are the regular balance beams you would expect, some are bent because of restricted clearances and have chains and ratchets, some are very low geared and take forever to wind . Some have flags built in to show levels and some you have to leave one set of gates open to prevent flooding. Some can only go through by appointment, some are electrically operated and some are permanently manned. I still marvel at the brickmanship of the whirls on the crossover bridges where the horse con change from one side of the towpath to the other and the towing rope does not get tangled. There was one balence beam that is about three feet long and is a bit of a pig to get moving. It all varies so much, also guillotine locks are fun and vertical lifting road bridges. Enjoy it all, we did.

    Nothing at all wrong with calling your wife "The Wife" or "Wifey" -- it's not for others to criticise you over it. And people who don't like tunnels can just skip to the tunnel exit, really. Love your content and look forward to every video.

      It’s something that was pre industrial historical, then when the age of steam and coal it remained something industrial and commercial but the conditions of the canals became rather unsightly. When the majority of the industrial and commercial aspects of switched over to rail or truck services the remaining residential/lifestyle aspects went into steep decline. It’s only recently (relatively speaking when you consider the lifespan of the canal system) that the canal system has started to be able to restore its charm and fascination similar to the way small marinas adjacent to popular beaches and waterside parks have become destinations to visit and live

    I fell in love with the first narrowboats I ever saw, on a day trip to Bath 10 years ago. For some one from the flat part of America, looking up and seeing a boat go by on a hillside was a magic moment. That sighting led to me following narrowboats here on TH-cam, along with deepwater sailors and tiny houses, so your tiny narrowboat channel is a natural. And you rewarded me right off with a new set of canals and one of those special times I celebrate when you passed by, and overlooked, a town lighting up for the evening. More magic, and thank you for it. Surprised to see you starting canal life this time of year, but I know the time is when you can, and I look forward to your re-fit and debut spring. Oh, and my two cents on tunnels: speeding the journey is fine and each one is worth seeing going in and coming out, imho

    Apart from hot water and gloves, it’s a good idea to have any knife you’re using on a wrist lanyard or a cord fastened to the boat,it’s far too easy to drop them in the cold or when wearing gloves

    • @thenarrowboatvlog8653
      @thenarrowboatvlog8653  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for the tip :)

    • @peterodonnell5820
      @peterodonnell5820 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a good point about the lanyard so you don't lose the knife. After nearly three years on my boat I'd add mobile phones, aluminium windlasses (even a SeaSearcher magnet won't get those back), mops, and fuel filler cap covers to list of candidates for the lanyard treatment! Last December in failing daylight I picked up an abandoned fisherman's keepnet on my prop and the steel hoops really wound round the prop. That was half an hour's work with a hacksaw and both arms down the weedhatch :-(

    • @thenarrowboatvlog8653
      @thenarrowboatvlog8653  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That sounds awful! Praying we don’t pick anything like that up! We will definitely be making a list of the top tips and working through them systematically - after completing the Wigan flight we were so cold and having to fuel up and take the fuel cap off it’s easy to see how those things can get lost! Especially when dexterity is reduced and I don’t fancy searching the murky depths for missing items :)

    Did you know the section of the Leeds & Liverpool Canal from Wigan Top Lock to Johnson's Hillock is in fact the southern end of the Lancaster Canal? The Wigan and Johnson's Hillock Flights were constructed to join the eastern and western sections of the L&L together to finally start making money. Also... I call my wife 'The Wife' and she knows not to complain because she is my second wife, thus technically she is 'A Wife'... by calling her 'THE Wife' she knows she is the BEST wife. ;-)
