- When you're speeding through Sonic games so fast, you don't always get time to stop and appreciate each zone. That's exactly what we're doing today. Here are all of the zones from Sonic 1, 2, 3, CD, Mania and Knuckles.

I think Hill top was supposed to be the past version of emerald hill when Sonic 2 was going to have time travel, thats probably why they're so similar
I wonder what caused it to be a lot less high-in-the-sky in the present.

@@k-leb4671 my theory is that due to a landslide, Emerald hill ( Hill Top ) went right down to the floor, or maybe, due to it's name, Hill Top was originally gonna be right after Emerald Hill, and it's Hill Top as in " Emerald Hill Top "
You’re right. It supposed to be the past version of Emerald Hill Zone. They team told that some years ago on a show, showing the original maps they created for the game.
I also figured it was also supposed to be the Sonic 2 “equivalent” to Marble Zone

So Sonic Mania clearly wins. Lets look at average scores to see the real game order.
Sonic 1 has 7 Zones, Sonic 2 has 12, CD has 7, Sonic 3 & Knuckles has 14 and Sonic Mania has 13.
Sonic 1 gets the scores 53, 50, 49, 32, 31, 28 and 22. Thats a score of 265. Divided by 7 we get an average score of 37.8!
Sonic 2 gets the scores 52, 47, 46, 45, 43, 38, 30, 29, 25, 21, 11 and 9! Thats a score of 396 divided by 12 which gives Sonic 2 average of 33.
Sonic CD gets the scores 40, 39, 37, 33, 23, 17 and 6. Thats a score of 195, divided by 7 thats an average score of 27.8!!
Sonic 3 & Knuckles gets the scores 51, 48, 44, 41, 36, 35, 27, 26, 19, 16, 14, 13, 12 and 10. Thats a score of 392 divided by 14 thats an average score of 28.
Sonic Mania gets the scores 42, 34, 24, 20, 18, 15, 8, 7, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. Thats a score of 183 divided by 13 thats a breathtaking score of 14!!!

I like the video but I really think you should have put the music for each zone you were talking about...
Glad you liked it! It's a great suggestion, but I think the transitions would have turned out fairly messy if I changed the track for every zone, especially the ones where there's not much to say about them.

I honestly would’ve put aquatic ruin higher on the list, as making the worst part of a sonic game (a water level) practically optional if you play it right is definitely a good move on their part. Though I do think that the water part included was pretty tedious and bad, so it doesn’t surpass any zone with great alternative paths. But the music was wonderful , it was a generally fast paced level, and the boss fight was decent.

It's hard to say what my favourite levels are, but Mystic Cave has to be up there, and Studiopolis from Sonic Mania purely because of the funky music!

I'm going to be dead honest, I find Marble Zone, Metropolis Zone, Wacky Workbench, and Sandopolis 5× worse than Labyrinth Zone.
Spaceman Alph the difference between scrap and labyrinth is that scrap is the last level in the game, so it’s expected. Lab is much earlier.

Wacky Workbench is fun imo, Marble Garden zone completely blows. I have not tried sandopolis yet.
Metropolis is pretty bad as Sonic though if im playing a port with Knuckles its decent. Wacky workbench is horrible though especially when trying to go to the past

My all time favorite zone is sonic mania titanic monarch.i love the theme of it in act 1 your are literally climbing up the next act.and the music for it is a delight i love the act 1 music “built to rule” it sounds like your stumbling in to what eggman has been building through out the whole game and feels like your in a really open space.

lava reef zone in mania doesnt just have quartz quadrant and hilltop zone it also has the stomping things from cd's metallic madness
There they got added in more dynamic ways. Instead of going trough it to be able to get on he higher plataform, without obstacles on the top and enemies on the bottom, mania puts a better twist.
At the first time you can wait to crush all the spikes or you can skip it doing a risky jump.
Also, the sections with lava under and enemies above makes it pretty much more challenging and interesting.
Okay random note but I love how synced Sonic is with the music here 7:27

This is a good video, but I can never get over how low you put Ice Cap, that zone deserves to at least be in the 10s.
Ice cap is actually one of my least favourite zones in the game, the worst ones being lava reef and sandopolis

i wasnt expecting labyrinth zone to be in dead last but it definitely deserves that spot. i also think aquatic ruin deserved to be ranked higher, but good video!

It's breathtaking when you take stock of how much classic sonic there is to enjoy. A very well made video, and whilst I disagree with some of your opinions (the sonic CD levels in mania were my least favourite) I respect what you've done, and there's clearly a lot of enjoyment gone into the making of this video. I enjoyed this video, thank you.
Here's a hypothetical for you: what would you like to see in sonic mania 2, if such a game was ever developed?
The one I disagree with is labyrinth zone at the bottom, it should be wacky workbench then labyrinth
I like Scrap Brain Zone for it’s mechanical danger appearance. It gives off a sci-fi horror vibe.
Finally someone has respect for scrap brain
Carnival Night and Death Egg are my two favorite zones, period
OH I AM SUCH A SONIC FAN! Thanks for the video though I never played Sonic Mania (something that will have to change) What do you think of the Sonic movie that is coming out? Or how Sonic games changed pace in design in the 2000s? Here is my list of zone ratings. I've added a few other zones from the classic Sonic era:
1) Flying Battery Zone Hands down the best zone and AWESOME music
2) Scrap Brain Zone Love the difficulty, bass and synth, and zone 1 Blade Runner background
3) Hydrocity Zone A water level that you can actually enjoy especially in the speedy act 2
4) Lava Reef Zone Massive zone, very atmospheric music and neat bosses
5) Tidal Tempest Zone Both Japanese and U.S. music versions are top notch for a change
6) Metallic Madness Zone Japanese music is excellent and super interesting background art
7) Wacky Workbench Zone
Stupid level name but fun level the bad future looks awesome
8) Ice Cap Zone Iconic arctic zone with memorable hypnotic dance style music
9) Stardust Speedway Zone Super fast zone with both wonderful Japanese and U.S. tunes
10) Chemical Plant Zone
Thick lead keyboards, finger snapping bass line and mega mac!
11) Casino Night Zone
So much fun to rack up a high score in the slot machines
12) Spring Yard Zone Unique level boss and interesting looking badnik enemies
13) Sky Sanctuary Zone Another synth/keyboard heavy zone with a stylish level design
14) Mystic Cave Zone DAT BASS!
15) Techno Base Zone Technological themed zone with gorgeous art direction but the boss....
16) Music Plant Zone
Does not fail to deliver on the unique music and art
17) Death Egg Zone (Sonic S and K)
Hard zone with the anti gravity, and traps but worth it
18) Palmtree Panic
Zone A better alternate Green Hill zone
19) Aquatic Ruin Zone
Just stay out of the water and you'll be fine

Ghosts, sand, and well placed traps sure to get your attention
21) Oil Ocean Zone A zone you can't forget with a bottom that is nothing but crude oil
22) Mushroom Hill Zone Easy and fun intro to Sonic and Knuckles
23) Emerald Hill Zone Easy and wonderful intro to Sonic 2

A creepy mechanical based pinball stage with a great art direction
25) Leaf Forest Zone
Nice way to start out Sonic Advance 2
26) Hot Crater Zone Sliding along the rails at top speed puts this one on the map
27) Volcano Valley Zone Reminds me of Lava Reef with the musical change in tone
28) Quartz Quadrant Zone
A jubilant zone with a great mix of piano, a accordion, and drums
29) Wing Fortress Zone Flying Battery before there was a flying battery
30) All Bonus stages from Sonic 1 thru Sonic and K
31) Puppet Panic Zone Final stage in Sonic 3D Blast provides a good challenge
32) Lava Powerhouse Eerie thick guitars in a pinball stage that can boil you alive!
33) Rusty Ruin Zone Great bass line and fills out for the "ancient ruins" stage
34) Collision Chaos
Stick with the Japanese music version in this pinball field
35) Toxic Caves
Giant worm heads, green slime and avoid being chomped by a rexxon
36) Egg Utopia Zone Death Egg version 2.0
37) Doomsday Zone Fun challenge avoiding the rocks and missiles
38) Final Zone
Last boss in Sonic 1 time to feel triumphant!

Metallic Madness is the arguably the best zone because of the music alone
Scrap brain zone is better because the music is great, level design for act 1 and 2 are epic, metalic madness is a more frustrating version of scrap brain.

I feel like my most favorite one in the classics is Casino Night zone, cause i love making a save state there in the Sonic the Hedgehog 2 game in a seperate file so i can play with the slots until the level timer runs out. Press Garden and Studiopolis tie with Casino Night zone. I honestly switch between the three depending on my mood.

I didn't like zone 3 of cd but the previous 2 were actually pretty good but that's just my opinion.
Metallic Madness, ay? I love CD's levels too, especially the Mania remakes! Tho, do Chaotix levels count? It is on the same console as most of the games.

@@ruccsacc knuckles chaotix technically counts tough sonic hasnt been the star in the game but he dose know team chaotix at the end and it origanally was sonic crackers but was turned into knuckles chaotix and the sonic and tails sprites were reused like mighty is just sonic and tails is blegh or the silver knuckle so technically yes it counts

Metallic Madness act 1's music is good, its like exciting, dance along, happy, and it has a good message
Metalic madness is scrap brain but worse but the music and art are pretty bang on. Metalic madness is basically a green version of scrap brain.

@@RedX8477 Scrap Brain and Metropolis have the best music, Metallic Madness is cool but a bit edgy and intimidating with the rapping. Launch base is joint 1st place with scrap brain for music and level design for acts 1 and 2.

Great rundown! Constructive criticism: I found the transition from zone to zone jarring because there wasn't really any audio or visual cues. Like, maybe you could have consistently started by saying, "Number 53: Labyrinth zone. Yada yada... yada. Number 52: Death Egg Zone. Yaya yada..."

I hated it in Sonic 2, but Sonic Mania made it fun and I got to burn it down.
53 was labyrinth
I think this turned out to be a pretty well-thought out list. My biggest gripe would be that while the level design for CD Metallic Madness was flawed and even frustrating in places it's the only instance for me where I prefer the original soundtrack to the Mania remixes. I guess I just enjoy Metallic Madness bad future Jp/Eur too much for the jazzy Mania remake to gain much traction for me.
While I can agree to some of what you said and it is understandable why its so high up on the list, I will say this about Labyrinth Zone. To a new or casual player, Labyrinth Zone is indeed a tough one to get through as it is really really slow paced and gets even slower when underwater. plus enemys and obstacles in blind spots just waiting to jump out at you and kill you or in the worst places at the worst times. But to someonw who has played these games to Death. It gets really really fun to blast through because I know everything the zone has to offer or hide and know the best route to complete it faster. Hell I'm at the point where I can finish the boss race without a single hit now. I like this zone to some extent but I don't love it as much as the rest on this list

My favorite might be Titanic Monarch zone Mania as it has an outstanding atmosphere and has amazing level design

I can't be the only person who adores Oil Ocean, thinks Studiopolis is the least amazing of the new stages in Mania (while still amazing), Metallic Madness is generic, and that Titanic Monarch is like one of the very best ever.
I'm still glad you gave all of the new Mania zones the recognition they deserve.
The point is, my opinions are messed up.
I'm sure opinions'll be wild for which kind of Sonic levels people prefer.

number 45...took 2 tries (1 as tails which failed and one as sonic which succeeded)..gotta admit,baiting the bomb to eggman wasn't the funnest thing in the world, but I think the boss was better than the zone that you get into hidden palace zone for...then again...I hate drilling bosses

I think knuckles chaotix is cannon because of heroes and onward so in my opinion I think you should have added it

There is actually a glitch in Scrap Brain Zone Act 3 which cuts out the entire stage.
Activate the platform and push against the wall
Then push the wall where the platform was so Sonic moves in
Then hold left to go in the wall
Head right, jump and hold left
Jump on the springs and stage done
I wish scrap brain act 2 was longer and act 3 was industrial and not a water levell because act 3 seriously embarrasses the epic industrial level design of scrap brain zone scrap brain zone would be number one if act 3 was industrial and not another labyrinth zone.
Basically every Sonic CD zones should be at the lower end... they are so chaotic and uninspired
