    my dog knew before anybody else that i had appendicitis. i was eight, so my parents didn't think i would have it, despite both of theirs being taken out - but when i got sick, my eight-week-old puppy wouldn't leave my side. thankfully my parents noticed it a little while after my dog did, or else i probably would have died within the next day, apparently. dogs are amazing tbh.

    My old dog Buddy refused to leave my grandmother's side when she was over. Insisted on sitting on her lap, and he was NOT a cuddly dog. She had uterine cancer. Once she had her uterus removed and finished her chemo, Buddy went back to being aloof. That's when we knew that he knew MONTHS before grandma got sick. I miss him dearly, the cheeky boy.

    MY DOG ACTUALLY DID THIS!!!! My friend had osteosarcoma in her leg and I remember when she would come over my dog would bark at her like crazy and would sometimes lunge at her legs . But my dog had known her since she was a puppy so we didn't understand why she was suddenly getting so aggressive around my friend! When she finally got diagnosed (early enough to get treatment so shes okay now) we wondered if that was why because i remember a year later after successful treatment my dog was fine around her again.

    • @Kiss_My_Aspergers
      @Kiss_My_Aspergers ปีที่แล้ว +1

      IIRC, osteosarcoma is also one of the most common cancers dogs die of, so maybe this was actually an evolutionary development all along (rather than some borderline-magic innate skill), and some dogs just never picked it up??? But now the ones that *_can_* also have the ability to smell it in humans...
      I feel like that would be a decent explanation, right?

    • @shaundoddzy5600
      @shaundoddzy5600 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@Kiss_My_Aspergersso what suggesting is that to a dog the smell of osteosarcoma is like the smell of a dog at the end of its life and as it's most common form of cancer which they die from stated by you so when they smell it on a human they know it's like inherently bad.

    Dogs really just have a way of knowing things. I had a bunny and my dog loved her. One night my dog started to bring all of his toys to her and leaving them outside her pen, then he just lay down watching her. We had no idea why, but the next morning we found our bunny dead. He just somehow knew something wasn't right and was trying to comfort her at the end.

    Met a person with a service dog with a similar "gift"
    They got a new puppy right as they started to develope seizures post a car crash. They noticed the dog would go crazy every time they were about to seize up.
    Turns out dog could smell the chemical change right before a seizure happened and learned to associate that with his owner being in danger.
    After that they took to training him to be a service and alert dog. A great story to tell.

He just wasn't having it. While they walked he was constantly looking at my mom and trying to give her licks, constantly keeping an eye on her. Later that day, my mom got a stroke. • @Daydreamer1130

    This made me start crying, it really reminded me of my old dog, a bulldog/mastiff mix who passed a few years ago, around a year before my mother passed of cancer, the doctors said it had been growing for a year at that point, by the time she was diagnosed she was already basically in stage 4. She and our dog were really close, she picked him out and spent her days with him, he loved her. He was so protective of her, he would spend nights by watching the front door, would block people he didn't like from my mom, and when she passed, we put his ashes in her coffin so they could always be together. I wonder if things could have gone differently, although this is probably closer to fantasy than anything else, if he lived longer and could have helped us figure things out sooner like this, if i could have had both of them even if it could have been just a bit longer.

    You know I've always wondered...when do they use the cancer sniffing dogs? Like do they have dogs once a month just roaming around the hospital/waiting area, hoping they smell one out? Or is it like a last resort kind of thing? When they can't find anything on the tests so they bring out the dog.
    Would be great if someone replied to this ♥️

    • @SendarSlayer
      @SendarSlayer 5 ปีที่แล้ว +30

      Usually they aren't used at all. Instead other early warning signs are used and checked for.
      Like men having prostate exams and women having breasts exams because those are Extremely common forms.
      Dogs that Can smell cancers usually only trigger for their owner, and rarely for other people unless it's already pretty obvious they have a condition. As such it's more of a "If your pet is suddenly acting weird get a checkup" rather than "Get sniffed by a cancer dog to check if you have it"

      Although dogs can be trained to sniff out cancer it isn’t something that is used (as far as I am aware). The are many reasons for this, one major one is cost (which I know may seem counterintuitive, but it is).
      Okay, let’s breakdown the costs involved. First, you have to have a breed that is specialized in detection (so a purebred) and you are going to want to promote specific lines (highly sought after purebreds, if they can sniff cancer the can sniff out other things as well). So just with the dog you are looking at 4-6000$ USD per dog, but we aren’t done, not even close. Most dogs fail out of service dog training and the failure rate is about 70% iirc and since this is going to be more rigorous let’s bump it up to 80%. So now you are talking 20-30,000$ just to get a suitable dog.
      Now the dog has to be trained (which will take two years at minimum). This will be a highly specialized trainer and let’s say their pay is 75,000$ USD a year and they can train 10 dogs simultaneously. That means they’re going to get out one dog a year. Oh and these dogs need to be fed and need medical care at around 1,500$ USD a year (including required medical testing) and that has to be x5 as only one in five make it though training (so that’s 7,500$ for two years for a total of 15,000$). You are looking at ~120,000$ USD per cancer dog. Plus, the dog will have to be retired as it ages (probably before the age of ten).

    My cat saved the life of my best friend and I in a gas leak. Somehow we had left the gas stove on for 12 hours, and at 5am my cat started going absolutely crazy. I let her in to cuddle but she wouldn't stop, so I got up to give her some wet food which is her morning ritual and I could smell the gas. I didn't know what to do but I had seen an episode of Home Improvement where the house explodes due to a gas leak. I asked my friend if she felt okay and we were both really groggy, but we felt fine so I called 911 to be safe. They said they would send someone over so I expected some kind of gas inspector and we casually got dressed in the meantime. Then, two firetrucks came screaming in and they yelled at us all to get out of the house. They said we had the highest levels of gas in a house that was still standing. They aaked how we managed to wake up and I told them about Connie, my rescue cat, and they said she saved our lives. She has been an amazing cat and I am grateful to be alive! Also, when I was fighting for my life through constant kidney surgeries, my cat came qnd laid down on my stomach all the time on the side that was sick. Normally she would lay higher up on my chest. She just knew.

    This happened to a baby outside a food truck we were eating at. A beautiful relaxed adult Malinois mix. My daughter pass him, waves "hey puppy", tail wag nothing more.
    Then this other baby in a carry pass and she was going through some kind of sickness, she had those big sanitary band aids on legs and arms and the dog went alert immediately. He sat and barked and wanted to go near her. But without showing teeth or aggressiveness he was... curious I think.

    My cat always knows when my hypoglycaemia plays up and I’m not realising (I have a few health problems sometimes symptoms get mixed up for me and I don’t realise till I need someone else to help me) but she will always start meowing (she’s usually really quite) and pawing at my arm or head. And I’ve had a hypo around her and she went and got my mum and wouldn’t stop meowing her head off till I came too, I know not a dog but I thing think it’s cool. She’s saved my life a few times, we listen to her when she meows now
