    This is a good book. Does provide a step by step introduction to how to build things th-cam.com/users/postUgkxhgbP-6hUnXu_QRaoHgLztgsI0YF3HqR0 , also does offer some steps. Includes pictures to give you ideas for layouts and such. If you are looking for a guide, this is not exactly what you want. But if you are trying to familiarize yourself with the way that pole barn building and other out buildings, are made, then this will work just as you need it to. A few things in this book are a barn (of course), detached garage, storage building, and coops.

    Learned what a story pole was years ago while watching This Old House. They used it for wooden shingles on the sidewall of a house, and have seen them use it numerous times since for tons of different applications. Anyway, nice video. These little tips and tricks videos are very informative.

    Been watching your videos to learn and pick up some tips for the building of my garage. They have been a very good source of information that I have already planned to implement. Do you have a specific video that shows how to figure out the spacing of the girts based on the wall height? Especially interested in finding out where to locate the top girt so it is in the proper location for the soffit installation. One of the biggest differences is that I already have a poured concrete slab with 12X12 footing perimeter and in floor heating tubes already placed. I will be building on top of the 30X48 slab. Any information or insight would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

    Kyle - in another video you talk about using the same story pole but marking the inside dimensions. I think it would really help if you used a 16' sidewall building as an example and listed all of the measurements from bottom to top (ie: 39 girt, 71" girt, 103" girt, maybe 120" header for lean-to, 13" girt, ….. Thanks

    Iv'e watched most of your videos and enjoy them all. Wish I could extract your knowledge with the push of a button. What would you recommend to learn about building a garage? Learning the basic names of what things are is probably where I need to start. I am an Artilleryman, retired in 2009. I know US Army stuff. From shooting 105mm shells to MLRS systems to calculating site to crest to calling in observer fires to bringing in attack helicopter or F16s onto a target, to calculating fire missions on a Paladin howitzer. That is what I know. I am a government contractor and go where the US Army requires me to go. On my off time, I enjoy wood working and riding my motorcycles. My intent is to build my own garage (60' by 80').

    The Highland Woodworker, a TH-camr making woodworking videos talked about making a story pole when he was building his shop for where things were run inside the wall like 110v and 220v lines. This way he knew by use of the story pole where it was safe to drill for mounting things to the walls.

    Can you please tell me..... If one bracket in your piers was for example 2inch higher than the others that post would be 2inch shorter to keep them all the same height for the trusses????
    Am I right in thinking you mark from the top of the post down or the horizontal timber would be out depending on different lengths of post. Do you mark from the top down???
    I learn lots from you guys. Super super videos thank you for taking the time to share with us.

    • @RRBuildings
      @RRBuildings  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes....every post is different below the reference mark depending on how good we set our brackets to grade

    • @NickWhite630
      @NickWhite630 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If one of the piers was 2 inches higher than they did something wrong lol, but they could essentially just use that as the new grade and that pole would be flush with the end of the story pole.
      They don't mark from the top down. The story pole has a mark that corresponds to the truss height and they cut the pole before it goes up. So the distance from the start line (the end of the story pole) to where the pole is cut for the truss is the same on every pole, but the tail sticking out under the story pole is what is different on each pole. The excess of the pole is cut off before the roof sheeting is put on.

  • @oojagapivy
    @oojagapivy 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The measurement of 1 3/8" only referred to that first bracket, correct? each bracket would have a different number for "grade height" and you mark those measurements on each corresponding post? So you make sure all your posts are in the order that they'll go into the brackets, transfer that grade mark then use the story pole?
    Just want to make sure I'm thinking this all correctly.
    Thanks for a great tip video.

      The Sono tubes are all set with a laser to a certain height. Then the brackets are set in the wet cement. In another video he showed his list of measurements from each bracket and all the measurements were with in half an inch. Pretty figgen impressive given that the tubes could had shifted and the brackets are set by hand by just pushing them down.

    Kyle, Great Tutorial! Does each vertical post have it's unique corresponding offset mark ? I'm assuming yes, if so, do you number them to keep them in the right order/location. If that is the case seems like the tops will be all different heights. Does that matter or are the roof trusses fastened to the sides of the vertical? Thanks for doing these videos!

    • @RRBuildings

      That's what he was talking about at the beginning with that 1 3/8" mark on the side of the gray bracket. The 1 3/8 inch meant that that bracket was 1 3/8 inch above grade (level). Each bracket has a different number on it. Then the story pole is set 1 3/8" from the end for that specific column and so on with each column so that the lines are an equal distance from grade (level). It took me a little bit of watching his videos to understand how it all fit together so hopefully this made sense.

    • @timyuhas5923
      @timyuhas5923 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      He doesn't show it well in this video but. The columns are laminated and the truss sits "inside" the outside two 2x6. The post are shipped with a removable blank at the top that he trims down in each one.

  • @stankaminski4338

    After using the story pole do you go back and cut off each post at the bottom mark (+1 3/8")?

    • @RRBuildings
      @RRBuildings  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      no...the whole point is that 1 3/8" is below my grade....I measure up that distance and then the reference mark is my zero elevation.. every post has a different measurement based off the laser

  • @Chris-ho5zb
    @Chris-ho5zb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Few questions.. we know the bottom board is the grade board. Next one up on the side for wall gurts is 2ft? The next is 39” from the bottom to allow for your transition in colors. Then every two ft all the way up to your ceiling height which in my build will be 12ft. At what height do I put my board for soffit? On my post and at the top of my ceiling height of 12ft I add 15 1/2” for my heel, what extra do I allow for when build my soffits, just the height of a 2x4? Fixing to start on my build.
    Also I am building my building on a slab, where do I take my measurement with my laser? At the lowest bracket?
    Thanks Kyle

    • @Chris-ho5zb
      @Chris-ho5zb 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can some respond to my question above?
      Why is the wainscoting wall gurt 39”? The metal is 48” and shouldn’t the walls be on 2ft center?

    One thing thing that might confuse some people is that you need to measure each post bracket individually, and keep track of which post go on which bracket. In other words every bracket measurement isn't going to be 1 3/8. (unless you were pefect on setting the brackets). Guessing you use a simple numbering system?

    • @RRBuildings
      @RRBuildings  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      as we make our posts, we make them in order and mark each measurement on the bottom so when we place it in the bracket we can confirm that the post is the same as the bracket measurement

    Once you've established the mark on each bracket, and that measurement is transferred to the individual post, do you then cut off the end of the post?

    • @floydfan5993
      @floydfan5993 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      in this case the adjustment is made at the top of the post (top of story pole) where the truss is going to sit, he purposely left the center 2x6 loose in the post, he cuts on that mark(top of story pole) and nails it back in place. hope that makes sense. I think he shows this step in one of the videos. It;s because he is using a bench mark(or grade mark) so if he didn't have a grade mark you find the lowest bracket and use that as your grade mark and like you said cut off the bottom of the post's that were higher than the grade mark(lowest point), there are just several ways you can do this but his way is better because he has several elevations to deal with on that story pole, I think this would have been less confusing to everyone if all the brackets would have been set at the same elevation, hope I didn't confuse you...lol

    First let me say I love your channel, the accent, the directness, the awesomeness of building a 128' shed as you call it, the huge wide open spaces, everything. But I almost completely do not understand your explanation of a story pole. First, I assume, and as I have seen from your videos, that the 13/8" measurement is different for each brace, so how can one story pole be used for multiple cuts? Remember when the little league coach told you to go out to right field and when he saw you with your back turned, he yelled, turn around, and the kid turned all the way around. That is who you might be dealing with--so, i politely request, another story pole video and do not leave anything out, anything. Much obliged,
