In cosmetology school they teach us to stand beside the client to wash the hair. Most salons do not have sinks where you can stand behind due to the back bar. I started doing hair in 1997 and I have never stood behind a sink to wash. This is also why most salons I worked in had a rule to wear sleeves as to cover your arm pits.
Hair Buddha is always trying to find something positive to say about each video. Re this video it was easy, everything was 5 Star. On some videos it can be a struggle but he truly does strive to be gracious. I find that very endearing.
I personally didn't like the stylist's vibe, but her hair is so pretty. Well done. Looks natural. I saved money and went to a fancy salon, she cut and styled my growing out buzz cut, so adorable. They had the washing sinks where she stood behind me and a head massage was included in the service. I would go there again.
I’ve had my hair washed in both positions at salons over the years, here in US, never even thought about it because I’ve usually got my eyes closed- it’s my favorite part of the visit, soooo relaxing. Zen.
I agree. Standing over the client is a little intrusive for me. I've had a hairdresser washing my hair and her armpit was just right over my face the whole time. It made me very uncomfortable. Love the results of her hair though, looks awesome 💕
Everyone talking about the washing station now. Her hair is WOW amazing ! I would go to this salon and I have never had my hair colored at salon due to mistrust of stylist even at expensive salon. Beautiful result I love it !
I 100% agree with you on the washing bowl. I hate when a salon has the side wash. I find it rude for the client and even more so to the hair stylist. The damage it does to their neck and back shortens their career. When I moved to a new area it was very hard to find a salon that has the washing bowl for back washing but I found one and love going to them. Starting to see a change in this but it’s because we, the clients are asking for it. Never had this happen but a salon called me back to ask about my washing bowl request and I politely ( be nice to people, don’t demand) explained my thoughts on this and the person said thank you and explained they had never even thought about this, said they do have the space to make these changes and they were about to do a full remodel. I received an invite to the grand opening I have to say, the place was beautiful and they had back washing bowls.
These are all things that make the salon where I go a 5 star salon. It is pretty and clean, the stylists are friendly and so professional, the stylist understands my hair and makes it so easy to style. (And she washes my hair from behind!) It costs $38 for wash, cut, and blow dry ! I always tip her $20 because to me, $58 is a small price to pay for hair I love.
In Brazil, we also stand behind the client while washing their hair. I don't think I ever went to a salon that did it differently? Also, this is something we learn when we go to hair school too: how to wash a client's hair (without drowning them or wetting their shirts), don't stand between them and the mirror, even how to hold a scissor. We learned about posture as well, how to welcome our clients, how to treat them...
Your opening comments about the welcome and smile certainly rang true with me, When I was still working as a veterinary surgeon sometimes I had to go from a euthanasia in one consult room to a new puppy vaccination in another. You get good at wearing a mask! And I agree, in a service industry like yours (or mine to some extent) a smile goes a looong way! In the UK and here in Australia the hairdresser stands behind to wash the hair.
Totally agree about the positioning of the wash basins! This wouldn’t pass health and safety standards in the EU because its not ergonomic for the hair stylist having to stand and wash the hair from that position. Would definitely contribute to workplace muscular and skeletal injuries.
In the majority of American salons it’s a plumbing thing. The water and drainage come through the wall so the wash basins are set against the wall. Most can’t justify the expense to bust into the foundation to reroute the plumbing OR they aren’t allowed to by the building owners. Having my hair washed at a salon has always been uncomfortable.
Wow...why make it so hard on everyone folks? Just adjust the pluming all together. Whenever and where ever you build a house. I mean, Europe obviously can. Why can't you? My brother in law’s a plumber, the issue is building codes and surrounding businesses for sure. There is allowance for certain types of sinks but because of the building codes they mainly put it in the walls. It’s easier for builders and electrical wires, but it causes issues for the plumbing, because if they go through the foundation of the building they can completely compromise the building structure itself. A lot of Americans don’t really understand that they are built on sand loam or sandy dirt and that has a lot of issues when it comes to building. I live in the mountains of Tennessee, and due to environmental protection we aren’t allowed to build underneath the foundation because of possible environmental damage and because of the many aquifers that dot the entire mountain region. I have an aunt in Florida by the beaches and for them it’s because of the possibility of erosion causing sink holes and complete structural damage. I was born in Texas and the issues the Midwest tend to face is from the desert sand structure and it’s heat, though they do allow some underground plumbing as long as the building is in a structural safe and environmental safe area. The upper mid west, they have wonderful forest areas and rocky terrain making plumbing not easily accessible in winter like most of the north east, which can cause freezing pipes and excessive water damage which can lead to $10,000 or more in repair costs. Many of the issues are legitimate for our plumbing community, but salon’s usually aren’t owned buildings, they are rented which causes more issues in itself, legally and building structure specifically because most buildings are built to house department stores. Even restaurants have to have set standards in building codes to operate out here, and I can say they are very restrictive and frustrating as I work in one myself. I hope this helps Europeans understand our plight…..we also are grossed out by armpits and closeness from our stylists, as they are themselves to do it but it’s really hard to find building codes that allow European style wash basins.
I've had both good and bad experiences in salons, but I finding a good and professional hair person is hard, but I found a good one finally. I also learned to speak up if I don't like something now. Also I'm in the US,but luckily never had an armpit in my face.

I gotta say, I really love your channel HB. I've learned so much! Like, I want to have a pale pink tint on my hair. I bought toner for it. But I realized that my roots need one more round of bleach if I want my whole head to be a level 9 blonde. And that's something else too! 3. I know I need a level 9 or 10 blonde if I wanna slap on the toner I'm using. And 4. I waited a whole month to make sure I really want the pastel pink tone on my hair. I did virtual looks and all sorts of prep. Now ... Well now I'm just plain procrastinating and bingeing your videos. 😂😂 But I'm prepared with good info at least!
You are so right about the basins. I’m sure it’s hard on the stylists back but also as a client it’s uncomfortable to have someone leaning over you in your personal space like that. At least for me it is🤷🏻♀️
I loved this video! It's so nice to see a good outcome. To be honest, it stresses me out to see so many fails. Once in a while, yes, but not all the time.
I live in America myself and I’m lucky that my hairdresser stands behind the bowl. You are right about the hairdressers in America, most stand over the front and I always hated that. Great video.
Her hair looks Amazing 😍,I agree with you HB about standing over the client while washing the hair & thankfully here in NY even though I live in a small city my hairdresser has always washed my hair while standing behind me at the sink. I’ve been going to the same stylist for 18 years now & he is wonderful,if I were ever lucky enough to find myself in Brussels I’d LOVE to visit your salon!! Bucket List for sure!❤️ Thanks as always HB have a great rest of your day 😊
I recently paid £225 for my daughter (16) to get her hair done. She had her hair bleached in Sept 2021 by her hair dresser she trusted. She loved it. This year our regular salon shut it’s doors. We couldn’t find where her hair dresser went so we picked another high street salon that I used to go to. She had a lot of re growth so when they assessed it the said it wasn’t a simple bleaching as it was only the top 3-4 inches that needed it. When they quoted the price I almost thought it was a joke. So I paid £200 for the bleach/cut and blow dry and £25 for the use of Olaplex. My daughter has some mental health issues and getting her hair done has always boosted her self esteem. Her depression seems to lift (superficially)and her social anxieties reduce. So really not too much of a price to pay for the change I see in her almost immediately. She has final exams coming up soon with a conditional acceptance to her college so big burden there. She has Prom after that so regrowth will look kids cool with the dress she has picked. We all know a good haircut changes how we feel and we have to trust the professional who does it. That comes at a price. Maybe that’s why I haven’t had my hair cut since the first Uk covid lockdown. Over 2 years. I don’t know where I’m going to go though as I’m not prepared to pay that much. The hair dresser was great though. Talked to her the whole time. Asked her what she wanted not what I would allow. I was just there for the bill. Tony and Guy are so expensive. How do they keep the lights on. There was only 2 other customers during the 3 hours we were there. By the way. I love watching this channel. You give great tips in avoiding all the mishaps you critique.
Your daughter's one lucky girl. If I had gone to my mother for that she would have made me get a job and pay for it myself. I've been thinking of getting it done the past few years. My hair is a level 3/4 very dark brown almost black, so I'm sure it would cost a small fortune. Then, as you mentioned here, there is the cost of the upkeep. Instead, I've decided to let my grey grow out, and then I'll start adding some fantasy colors.
@@mydogeatspuke Having your hair done does not carry the same increased risks of suicide and self harm though does it. Antidepressants in juveniles is a precarious practice that has to be carefully and closely monitored. Prescriptions for minors are free in England.
YES!!! Shout out to my fellow Canadians! 😂🤣👍🇨🇦. Also Buddha, I love your videos but sometimes I can't hear the video you are reacting to and if turn up the volume you get really lol. Thank you for listening to me and what I had to say! ✌️
I think they always stand over the person getting their hair washed, because all the sinks are against a wall or cabinets or something like that and there isn’t much room. At least all the places I’ve been to (USA) the sinks were in a place that was hard to get to.
Wonderful video I really enjoyed your positive take, and lovely to see you impressed. Nice to see you be honest 🙂 and say but you are trying to be positive
In the UK we would definitely feel uncomfortable if the hairdresser was leaning over us to wash our hair. Where i live there are numerous 5 star salons and none of of them lean over the clients. Also i don’t think the hairdressers would appreciate it on their backs.
Now I’m really curious about the setup of hair salons in Europe. Here in Canada (at least the ones I’ve been in) the salons are in straight lines or setup to maximize the amount of customers they can have at one time. Everything is against a wall so you can’t get behind if you wanted to. In Europe are there notches on either side of the basin or does the basin roll out? Perhaps the Hair Buddha has a video of their salon. I’ll have to dig through some videos. 😁
In Australia, the basins are set into something similar to a narrow kitchen island bench, but it can be attached to a main wall at one end. The plumbing is hidden in the bench and the hair dresser has room to stand behind the basin for washing.
Backwash basins in UK are quite often plumbed in against the wall so we have to stand to the side. I was trained to stand facing forward so that I don't have my armpit in my clients face. And to swap sides if possible to avoid getting a bad back. I do like the fact that it is easier to communicate with your client if you are closer to them. Being short I really struggled with the few "stand behind" basins I used.
All the salons I've been to in the US have the wash basin connected to the wall. I'm sure it's easier to install the plumbing that way, and it saves space. Having your stylists armpit above your head is just part of the experience....I guess.
Hello Hair Buddha! Im a fellow hairdresser in the U.S. Yes, shampoo bowls here are usually installed in rows against the wall.. the sink itself is designed that way!
Wow awesome job! I'm in California and my hair dresser washes from the back. I agree when they are over you it feels invasive. Thanks for your videos Hair Buddha, I do enjoy your content. Much success to you and your channel.
I live in Switzerland and here the hairdresser also washes the hair when he stands behind the customer. I wouldn't like it either if he gets that close to me and then has his armpit right over my face. 🙈 Thank you for this great video and for all your videos. From time to time I can laugh at their great reactions. Greetings Bettina 🇨🇭
I'm so glad you mentioned the in front vs. behind hair washing issue! I don't spend a ton of time in salons, but I do get my hair colored in a fairly simple way every few months. We've lived in every environment from very rural to big cities, and I've been to at-home salons (just a tiny room on the back of someone's home that had its own entrance and a wash basin) to a salon where I felt, as a person with an art background, that my stylist was truly an impressive artist! The placement of the wash out has been a topic of curiosity and sometimes dread for me in all these places! I did feel that the higher end salons who all washed from behind were MUCH MORE comfortable. It's incredibly off-putting to get a mouthful of someone's dirty, billowing apron as they lean over to wash from the front, which happened at a less professional venue. There weren't any bad motives involved in that situation, just a poor set up and general sloppiness. I'm currently looking for someone new! 🤞I evaluate on skill, but tidiness is a factor in that calculation!
Enjoy the fails a bit more, but these 5 stars a refreshing also. As a retired Hair colorist, I love your reaction to all of them! Keep them coming! p.s. also as Americans we were taught in school to stand over them when shampooing. When sinks were introduced w a place to stand behind them I found it very uncomfortable being in that position.
Most salons in the US (And Canada I suppose) have the wash basins up against the wall and I assume it’s because not many salons are willing to or allowed to significantly reconfigure the plumbing to allow those kind of wash-from-behind basins, since most salons are leasing space. I could be totally off-base, though.
Sarmad has been my hair stylist for the past 3 years, he's just amazing at his job. He gets dark my hair to a really light blond in one setting. I'm actually going back next week.
There are great salons in Vancouver but I also remember that Suki’s used to charge extra for a “solar dry” which was just them sitting you outside and letting the sun dry your hair. It cost $15 back in the 80’s.
I mean it does help that the girl is drop-dead gorgeous :D But also the result looks very pretty, very natural and healthy. I would have loved to see the uncurly finished version, because I feel that curls always hide little unevenness in the cut. Very beautiful result :) thanks for showing this Hair Buddha! Have a great weekend!
Agree with wanting to see straight version. Also need more non model/telegenic looking people at good salons - diff countries and cultures to see how the hair style experience/salons vary worldwide. Barbers too.
Im so excited! That’s typical American slang 😉 She looks like a doll, very pretty and she loves to look at herself! Over the client work is not advised and not done in Germany! The apron, maybe he think it’s chick to show like rustic leather jacket! But for a high class barber, better not advised! Hair Buddha, I love your videos and the explanation, keep it up👍🏻✌🏻
Yes!! The shampoo bowls in most of the US, I always hated the placement of them. Having the backbar directly behind, and no where to go but standing beside the client and having to bend over all weird.. so I wouldn’t be on top of them or having my armpits in their face. Most of the back pain and shoulder pain I still have, is from years and years of contorting myself weird. To give my clients space when shampooing their hair lol.
Some salons have it where you can stand behind ,but most schools have the side model sinks .I like the sinks you can stand behind less stress on your back.
All the salons I have worked in have really bad chair set up that foece you to shampoo that way. Not many salons detail the ergonomics of the shampoo bowls. Finally at a salon that has comfortable client shampoo chairs/bowls and its a world of difference.
I used to go to a hole in the wall where a Filipino woman named Josie would work on my hair. I gave her "cart blanche". She was amazing..She finally retired a few years ago but I never had a better hair dresser.
It all depends on where the water pipes are....in the US most water pipes are in the walls. or sinks are back to back with one set of pipes.between them. free standing sinks cost more to have water coming up out of the middle of the floor. many salons have concrete floors.
Yes! We have our sinks up against walls so there is not a lot of space. I agree it’s awkward when we are shampooing clients. I always wondered why we have to do it like that.
The position I think is lazy/money saving plumbing. I agree the free standing basin where the shampoo is from the back is more comfortable for all involved but when there is slab construction with no water plumbing (Just drains) in the floor all in walls and ceiling the extra cost of adding floor plumbing to come up is expensive and requires a lot of work. One salon I went to with free standing basins... compensated by building a platform at the shampoo area about three steps up to have crawl space to run plumbing without chiseling up the owner's floor in the leased space and easily removeable by owner if salon moves.
I love her hair. I don’t know how much she paid but it had to be a lot because she had two people working on her at the same time. I’m also wondering if those aprons are actually dirty or if that is the style. The stains look the same on both aprons.
Only some salons in the US have shampoo bowls that you can stand behind. I went to a British owned school, and learned to stand behind, I liked that better.
I am a “Beauty School Drop Out” from way back when! And one thing I hated was standing over a client while washing their hair. I am very short, so had a difficult time even making it to “over!” And, at the time (long before losing my boobs to breast cancer), I had very big boobs, and was always trying to somehow reposition myself so my boobs weren’t in the customer’s face! (Men clients didn’t seem to mind! 😄) I love your videos! 🙋🏻♀️💟

He’s so right about smiling I work in a hotel and we ve been told always to smile no matter how you feel or a guest annoys you!! I do try!
I live in America myself and I’m lucky that my hairdresser stands behind the bowl. You are right about the hairdressers in America, most stand over the front and I always hated that. Great video.
It looks like magic when its well done like this and this is when i love this job sooo much
Lovely hair. Your thoughts on the way we lay in the sink is SO true. I never thought of that.
Beautiful result blended beautiful ,perfect colour on her didn't go over bright ,beautiful another great video thank you
In my salon, in England the hairdresser stands behind me, it must be awkward to wash someone's hair the way he is doing. He did a beautiful job
Bucket List for sure!❤️ Thanks as always HB have a great rest of your day 😊
Yep. That’s stunning.
I wonder perhaps about sink positions, it’s partially related to plumbing, existing facilities and square footage.
We hope for the clients that the salon employees don't smell bad under their arms😂. Thanks for your great video's. Great work Hair Buddha ✌️
Did you know that gray hair is caused by a build-up of hydrogen peroxide which is the active ingredient in hair bleach. Draw your own conclusions.
You are a sweet mother........good luck to you.......❤
An anti depressant prescription will have roughly the same impact and cost significantly less.
@@mydogeatspuke Having your hair done does not carry the same increased risks of suicide and self harm though does it. Antidepressants in juveniles is a precarious practice that has to be carefully and closely monitored. Prescriptions for minors are free in England.
In Canada here ~ and my hairdresser stands behind me. ☺️
Same
YES!!! Shout out to my fellow Canadians! 😂🤣👍🇨🇦. Also Buddha, I love your videos but sometimes I can't hear the video you are reacting to and if turn up the volume you get really lol. Thank you for listening to me and what I had to say! ✌️
Her hair looks amazing❤thanks for sharing
I think they always stand over the person getting their hair washed, because all the sinks are against a wall or cabinets or something like that and there isn’t much room.
At least all the places I’ve been to (USA) the sinks were in a place that was hard to get to.
Nice👍 it's good to see some five star salon videos. A little break from all the hair fails.
Lovely colour. Beautiful.
Wonderful video I really enjoyed your positive take, and lovely to see you impressed. Nice to see you be honest 🙂 and say but you are trying to be positive
A beautiful girl and wonderful hair 👏thanks for sharing 🙋♀️❤️
In the UK we would definitely feel uncomfortable if the hairdresser was leaning over us to wash our hair. Where i live there are numerous 5 star salons and none of of them lean over the clients. Also i don’t think the hairdressers would appreciate it on their backs.
It was good to see professionals do a great job and I also like the hair fails for all the brilliant advice you give. Love your videos 😊
You are spot on!!
I know it’s going to be good ! He used to do my hair in Vancouver 💕🇨🇦
Love her hair. Oooof so nice. I live on a small island and there is no way anyone has the knowledge to get my hair like this. I wish.
He did a good job on her hair his really good & yes I'd love to see more 5 star rating salons TFS Hair Buddha
Buddha…. This girl is so gorgeously-gorgeous that even if all her hair feel off she would be stunning !!!
Sad times for me and my face. 😂
That was breathtaking result 💖
Amazing results, and the guy had me infatuated. Good stuff.
I love your videos! Especially after a long day of work
Our plumber comes from wall and sink is hooked to plumbing and wall. In every saloon I have ever been in. There is no way to get behinf.
Love 5 star videos
She’s a beautiful young lady 😊
It's so nice starting the day with one of your reaction videos :)
Her hair is amazing!!! That’s my dream hair. ❣️❣️❣️
I mean it does help that the girl is drop-dead gorgeous :D
But also the result looks very pretty, very natural and healthy.
She looks like Micarah Tewers.
Beautiful colour 🎉
Woohoo! My 🌧 dreary day has been saved. Thank you for rescuing me, Hair Buddha. 🌞🌈❤
Welcome en enjoy. Have a great weekend Trista
@@hair-buddha, Thank you. I hope you & yours had a grand weekend, too.
Some salons have it where you can stand behind ,but most schools have the side model sinks .I like the sinks you can stand behind less stress on your back.
She so beautiful ❤
Would love to see more five star salons and what you think goes into making them 5 star. Useful techniques and of course anything that is not good.
She looks great. I have never liked that look but this video changed my mind. It’s all dependent on technique.
Great review!
breathtakingly beautiful
Vancouver Canada! 🇨🇦
Completely agree about the apron. 5 star needs clean and crisp like the white chairs and faux fur cushions. Devil is in the details
omg....do you know "tabatha take over"? you could react to that! would like to hear your opinion about it...
8:00 here in Brazil is the same way, the hairdresser stay in the back
All the salons I have worked in have really bad chair set up that foece you to shampoo that way.
Now ı am in a saloon and ı watch everything with your voice inside my head :D
Her hair looks so fabulous and she pulls it off so we'll. I wish I could be beautiful like her.
You are! 💕
@@user-hx7mi7ml8u Thank you 😊
I love her hair. I don’t know how much she paid but it had to be a lot because she had two people working on her at the same time.
I’m also wondering if those aprons are actually dirty or if that is the style. The stains look the same on both aprons.
Vancouver Canada so high $$$$ range for top level hair stylist and salon.
That was fun. Thank you!
In the USA my stylists have always stood behind me for washing. I never saw anyone standing over me and would tell them no if they did.
It's a plumbing thing in the uk too
