Very nice. I had a '99 XR250R that I bought new and kept until just two years ago, so I had it for 20 years. Best dirt bike I've ever owned, and I took very good care of it. The guy who bought it from me thought it had been restored, but it had not been, I just kept it in good shape. I did uncork it, so it had a richer main jet, a more open airbox, and an FMF pipe. Power was superb in my opinion, tons of torque down low and a very snappy mid-range. And it handled really well. But, I was ready for something I could also ride on the street, so I bought a DR650 which has also been a very good bike and lots of fun.
I heard your grandfather mention Mt Nebo speedway in the north hills...I live right near that spot, which is mostly interstate I279 now, but I know exactly where they used to hold hill climb competitions. In fact, there are still a good bit of trails near that area, so if he rode dirt bikes off road there too, i'll bet I've been on some of the stuff thats left. I never got to see the dirt track that was there as it was gone before my family moved into the north hills area. I have some videos on my channel of the Mt Nebo trails that still exist, but would probably be hard for your grandfather to recognize since the landscape has changed quite a bit. Small world!
Young man you lucked out when it comes to the grandpa sweepstakes lol, if I lived closer I'd be trying to buy or trade something for the 250r if you guy's were willing to part with it. But I live out here in Arizona 😢
The xr250 has a lot of torque which is fun the 250f feels very smooth when accelerating. I’d say you feel faster in the 250f but both have a similar top speed
The extra weight of the crf250f vs XR is mostly due to the electric start and fuel injection. The battery, starter, and fuel pump don't come for free.
The Frame is twin spar and does add to the weight. But the all the electronics definitely add to the weight

The 250 is a great bike and arguably one of the best trail bikes ever produced
Great choice getting the dr650
Huge soft spot for the xr250. Borrowed one for a summer years ago and fell in love. Currently looking for a minty 2000s xr250
I saw one local for 3k that has 64 miles on it. Very clean
There is a mint xr250r on marketplace rn. Located in Birmingham AL if you're still looking.

The oil cooler comes stock after 1985 on the xr250r
@@SubscibeBikeGiveaway can it work for my 84 motor?
@@aleccat9351 Honestly i dont know. but ive seen it done on a xr200r so anything is possible.
Has a fan of motocross and Supercross since the early 70s the name David Brown never comes up as a champion. Was he a champion and some other country?
Local Harescramble champ
