XR100 is a fun and lightweight bike that is also very durable. I would recommend visiting a few dealers and getting their recommendations on various bikes based on your skill level. Perhaps you have family members that can also give recommendations based on your skill and experience. There are lots of options for street legal off road bikes. Bikes like a XR150L or CR300L would be a step up from the XR100 and both are street legal. KTM/Husqvarna/Gas Gas and Beta all offer higher performance street legal off road bikes. I had a 2007 CRF150RB (the big wheel). Even at 6'2" tall and 190 lbs I could lap that bike within 1.5 secs of my bigger 250F. Cool Honda still makes that bike! Ride Red!
Unless someone is racing for a living it's hard to justify and extra $3300 for only 14 seconds on a recreational vehicle. Was the 2:35 lap not fun enough?
Super cool video . Hey I was hoping maybe you could help me out. I'd like to buy a 2021 Honda crf250f and there is a good shop with 4 .7 star. And they have the bike for 4k I'd like to know what is a good compression number for that bike. Please help
I am not sure - perhaps a check of a Honda Service Manual for that model would list the expected compression number for that model. Maybe a local dealer could look it up. Here is an owner's manual link to the '21 CRF250F cdn.powersports.honda.com/documentum/MWOM/ml.remawmom.2021_31k99q20_crf250f.pdf
The '22 CRF250F is a capable and easy to ride bike with a broad usable power range and solid handling characteristics. However a rider of similar skill on a '22 CRF250R which is 30+ lbs lighter and makes twice the power is going to have a significant performance advantage. For me that added up to about 14 seconds faster lap time on a short woods loop. I would assume you would go faster on the CRF250R too! Some people say dirt bike riding is 85% rider and 15% bike....that is probably true as most times a highly skilled fast rider on a slow bike will beat a slow rider on a fast bike! Depending on the type of riding and racing you are doing a CRF250F might be a fun bike to race!
@@mxengineer1 totally agree with the 85/15% rule . Many times I’m only 10 seconds slower than the next guy on a bike that’s double the cost of my bike .

CRF125F to CRF450R is a BIG JUMP!!!! Perhaps the CRF450X would be a big more enjoyable riding around the farm. I also find the latest CRF250F's to be very capable too. Both fun bikes! Ride Red!
I have a crf 250f and a yz250 and although it lacks some power in comparison it is such a fun bike the only thing I don’t like is how low I sit on it I’m 185 lbs and 6 ft tall and I feel like the suspension is so low
Yes the suspension travel on the CRF250F is quite a bit less than your YZ250. Honda targeted a lower seat height. I wonder how much better the stock CRF250F suspension would work for faster riders with just stiffer springs?
@@mxengineer1 I believe the rear shock is adjustable so I was going to bring it in and have it raised I’m just not sure how that will effect the overall ride
@@lucaslaroche2246 I believe there is some kind of preload adjustability on the rear shock spring so making it stiffer will make the rear ride a little higher which steepens the head angle a little - perhaps quicker steering feel?
Can you please explain that chatter when hard breaking please? My bike does it to an a lot of other ones I’ve seen online but it drives me nuts. Is it hard on the bike? I just don’t ask understand what it is
That is the rear tire under hard braking skipping along the ground and the chain slapping against the chain slider on the swingarm. Sometimes loosening the rebound on the rear shock helps keep the tire in better contact with the ground under braking and can reduce that chatter sound.
Never owned a dirtbike, sold my street bikes, and would like to go tool around on trails, what would you recommend. 6’2 210. I know they don’t handle like street bikes obviously, but how much Different skill is involved that would bar me from getting a higher end bike versus a beginners bike if there is such a thing, and if there is what is it? Thank you
Really depends on your approach to riding. The '22 CRF250F is a very fun bike for anyone and super easy maintenance and will last a long time. The '22 CRF250R is a full on high performance race machine designed to go fast around a motocross track - not for putting around in the woods. See if you can bum a ride on a friend's dirt bike and see what matches your interest and skill level.
@@mxengineer1 OK wasn’t sure if there’s a different type of bike for trails, Suspension, chassis, etc. Verses one for track. Of course I would like better suspension. But do not need a race bike.
No tenes en cuenta que a la 230 no podras mejorar mucho el tiempo. En cambio la 250 le queda mucha potencia por entregar y puedes mejorar mucho el tiempo
The CRF250RX is basically a CRF250R with an 18" rear wheel, o-ring chain, usually 1-step softer spring rate front and rear in the suspension along with a softer suspension setting, revised EFI mapping for smoother throttle response, and a larger fuel tank. The R and RX models are competition models with making more power and also weighing significantly less and require far more frequent engine maintenance and parts replacement. F model is a more classic Honda trail bike with a focus on durability and long engine life and lower cost initially and overall. I'd recommend visiting a local Honda dealer to see the bikes and discuss with a knowledgeable salesperson to understand the differences.
@@mxengineer1 That's like a substatial amount more - $5,000. The F model isn't so bad for those on more of a budget who want to get on the trails. Dollar value is good with the F.
@@mxengineer1 Like with anything else. Do you need all the extras the high end model offers? If not, why pay the extra money for things you don't need. Especially in todays economy.
Just wish the F had better suspension..engine will go forever where the R will need freshened up more often...like to see adj Yamaha style suspension on the F like the Ttr. Great bike though but I still prefer a 99 to 03 XR 250...they were the bomb.
Yes the air cooled 250F engine in a more moto capable (adjustable suspension) chassis would be a fun bike. I really enjoyed the last Honda XR250/400's very good bikes - last forever.
@@shanestirling3535 Wow! That is Honda quality!! So do you have an hour meter or speedometer on your CRF230F? At 18mph average that would be 28,800 miles...that is a lot of riding!

Your height seems enough to reach the ground flat footed but best for you to go to a Honda dealer and check for yourself how comfortable you feel on the bike.
Ricky Carmichael is about your size and had no issue riding full size race bikes. Really comes down to how comfortable you are riding a dirt bike without being able to put your feel flat on the ground (probably you will tip toe or have one flat on the ground and the other on the footpeg). There are people smaller than your riding full size dirt bikes. You can also get lowering links for the rear suspension to get a bike lower to the ground (though it will have an effect on suspension feel).... www.koubalinks.com/
I know this is an old post, but I am 5’ 6” and ride the crf250r on the track and love it. Once you are moving on a track, the short inseam and tall seat doesn’t matter one bit. But off road woods single track over obstacles and loamy steep and side sloped terrain and such, the crf250r is a real challenge because I cannot dab/reach when needed. The crf250f seems like a much better choice…

1979 Kawasaki KLX250 was an air cooled 250F engine in a close to moto chassis! The 1996 Honda XR400 had adjustable suspension but a steel frame that was more off road focused. Air cooled engines in a full on moto frame are custom builds today.

Yes both great bikes - just a fun back to back ride. Wish Honda would make something between these models...kind of like a modern day XR250
cool video!! i just got a 2022 150rb
I had a 2007 CRF150RB (the big wheel). Even at 6'2" tall and 190 lbs I could lap that bike within 1.5 secs of my bigger 250F. Cool Honda still makes that bike! Ride Red!
@@mxengineer1 Im 5'10" at 150 lbs so the 150r feels a bit more comfortable.
Finally Honda Blue/Red. 👏
I agree!
Great video
Thank you!
Unless someone is racing for a living it's hard to justify and extra $3300 for only 14 seconds on a recreational vehicle. Was the 2:35 lap not fun enough?
Nice that Honda gives us choices in 250F dirt bikes and both put a big smile on my face when I ride them!
Not just the lap times. Suspension and pulling power are significantly improved
Wich is the best for wheeling ?
Both are good wheelies bikes...I think the CRF250R is a little easier for me!
Outstanding
Think an average C rider could be competitive on the 250f?
Ohio rocks! Allen County here. Ride for life. #Honda #KTM #Maxima
Some great riding in Ohio!
Where In ohio are good easy trails for young kids to learn?
I just want to be smooth, have fun, get there... CR250F. I would eventually hit a tree if riding at the R pace. Plus I'd not have the wind or skill for that level of riding, especially while talking.
CRF250F is a very fun and capable off road bike. Quiet and durable too!
Just got my 22 250F home from the dealer I am I'm Canada so going to be some months until I can take her on the maiden voyage!
New rider, kind of wish I ponied up for the big bike but don't think I'll be doing any jumping for a long time and hopefully the bike can take some of it when that time comes
Enjoy your new Honda...maybe ride in the snow! Ride Red!
Hey man, once you feel up for trying those jumps there are some spring options for the 250f that make it work better.
@@wanvaldez wait which ones
@@wanvaldez please elaborate:)
I have a 2014 crf125f I had when I was younger and a lot smaller, I want more power and size. I ride it round our farm and throw our woodlands no racing or timed stuff I want a simple reliable honda. What would you recommend would a crf250f be enough of a jump or would I have to get a crf450,
CRF125F to CRF450R is a BIG JUMP!!!!
@@mxengineer1 also, great video brother ride safe
@@lucaslaroche2246 I believe there is some kind of preload adjustability on the rear shock spring so making it stiffer will make the rear ride a little higher which steepens the head angle a little - perhaps quicker steering feel?
@@lucaslaroche2246 Thank you! I rode this '22 CRF250F again last night - will post another ride video soon on this bike
@@mxengineer1
OK wasn’t sure if there’s a different type of bike for trails, Suspension, chassis, etc. Verses one for track. Of course I would like better suspension. But do not need a race bike.
Klx300r
No tenes en cuenta que a la 230 no podras mejorar mucho el tiempo. En cambio la 250 le queda mucha potencia por entregar y puedes mejorar mucho el tiempo
Can someone explain what the rx model actually is compared to the f and r ?
@@mxengineer1 thank you for the quick and informative response! Subbed
Good price difference between the two.
Yes the full on race CRF250R is more money and more frequent maintenance too.
Where are you riding? Is this a private place? Thanks.
Yes a private farm
Just wish the F had better suspension..engine will go forever where the R will need freshened up more often...like to see adj Yamaha style suspension on the F like the Ttr. Great bike though but I still prefer a 99 to 03 XR 250...they were the bomb.
Yes the air cooled 250F engine in a more moto capable (adjustable suspension) chassis would be a fun bike. I really enjoyed the last Honda XR250/400's very good bikes - last forever.
@@mxengineer1 my 2018 230f has nearly 1600hrs on the original motor! It's starting to use oil now but still runs like a clock!
@@shanestirling3535 Wow! That is Honda quality!! So do you have an hour meter or speedometer on your CRF230F? At 18mph average that would be 28,800 miles...that is a lot of riding!
I have the 250F and put the upgraded front and rear springs from BBR on it and it has made a notable difference.
@@wanvaldez Good to know!
How do you know when you change the modes in the ecu map thing
A quick press on the map switch will make the blue map light come on and flash the selected map (1-flash is map 1 - the stock map, 2=flashes in Map 2 the Soft map, and 3-flashes is Map 3 the aggressive map)
I got myself a crf450r & crf230f. Best of both worlds, 230 for tight trails and 450 for open trail
Ride Red!💪
I’m 5”11 do you think I’ll fit a 250
Your height seems enough to reach the ground flat footed but best for you to go to a Honda dealer and check for yourself how comfortable you feel on the bike.
Could I buy a plastic kit for a 2022 honda crf250r and put it on a 2022 honda crf250f?
They are completely different frames and plastic so I do not think it would work without a lot of modifications and fabrication.
for trail riding and playing 7% slower for half the maintance and price take the f
Interesting take on these bikes....I like you logic!
Have you had a chance to ride the 2021 KX250 yet?
I have not had the opportunity to ride a '21 or '22 KX250 though I did get to ride a new '22 KX450SR!
@@mxengineer1 I really enjoyed watching your videos. Thank you for the reply.
@@morrisboyracing7696 Thanks!
how tall do you think somebody should be to ride the 250r? i’m 5’6 and a half and i feel really comfortable on a 250f good size
@@Martin-qt2tn lol i forgot i commented this, been 2 years and just got the noti, i got a 230 and then a 250rx
@@owenbucknell5654How is the seat height of the rx in the woods environment for you??
I have used my r for everything and am just deciding it is holding me back in woods skills and development because of the 38” seat!
@@Martin-qt2tn i thought the seat heights were both the same at 38in? i might be wrong i’m not sure, the suspension is great though, very soft and nice for rough terrain. the rx feels wide like a yamaha i find because of the large tank, this isn’t an issue when riding as you don’t even feel it
Trail bike vs race bike!
Yep - just a fun back to back comparison
Im 1.69cm which one the best?
I assume you mean 1.69M tall? The CRF250F seat height is much lower than the CRF250R seat height - maybe better for shorter riders?

Bikes getting stolen is not good. We are riding at a buddy's private farm so and I had some friends around keeping an eye on the bikes while I was riding each one!
I want a 300cc 4 valve, air cooled engine on an aluminum frame with fully adjustable racing suspension. That would be my dream bike... but I'm just dreaming right?
1979 Kawasaki KLX250 was an air cooled 250F engine in a close to moto chassis! The 1996 Honda XR400 had adjustable suspension but a steel frame that was more off road focused. Air cooled engines in a full on moto frame are custom builds today.
