Woodturning - Nothing Short Of Genius!
In this woodworking video I use a woodturning lathe to turn a decorative hollow form inspired by the amazing Greg Gallegos of Natural Selection Studio.
If you find these video’s a good source of entertainment, I’d appreciate you like, share and subscribe.

This style finish is directly inspired by Greg Gallegos of www.naturalselectionstudio.com
.Please check out how much better his work is. Thanks Greg.
Not to belittle your effort at this style but, yes, Greg Gallegos really has this method/style down pat. And let's not forget, we all have to start somewhere, and your start is pretty damn good.
Very tedious but a great effect. I think I may have liked it better after the burning but before the paint.
At any stage I would have thought "finished!" But the final is a beauty
Thanks 🙏 Glad you enjoyed it 😊
فعلا
بعد الحرق اضنها كانت اجمل دون الطلاء
Great bowl Jack. I love the effect with the divots and paint. Did you oil the inside?
Same! But the final one is pretty neat too
I was thinking a lovely simple woodgrain, like a little sparrow... and then you transformed it into a splendid peacock!
I love it
Thank you very much! I guess the colour is a little Peacock 🦚 like. Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I absolutely loved the burned edged indentations
Yeh me too. Watch this space for some new ideas 👍🏻
Wow! I've never seen such art work before and I love it. Thank you very much for the video ❣👏
Even the burnt one without paint was awesome!!!!
My ADHD tells me i can also do this, and now im on amazon looking for the tools. Ill figure the rest out 10k less later 😂😂
That is in fact how it starts! Used lathe , basic tools, then a new bigger lathe!
In the last 3 years ive picked up 7 new hobbies lol...
@Zzrdemon6633 i now know how to garden, grow rare and expensive hoyas and other house plants, how to build and maintain a terrarium, how to build and maintain an indoor and outdoor greenhouse, how to make pottery, tried to build my own kiln in my 7x7 back yard lol, candle making, concrete pottery, fixtures and how to lay concrete in general, resin art and jewelry, seed bead jewelry making and embroidery, landscaping, how to identify plants in the wild, also dry and store for tea, which plants go with which for what ailments, also how to make tinctures, and mixing oils and herbs for home remedies, made hair paste once lol.. rock hounding, metal detecting, seashell collecting, and most recently antique and vintage glass and other housewares....
My ADHD tells me to eat a lot less.
I just bought a lathe for $300 that can handle up to 12" in diameter. Funny thing is though, I haven't even used it yet, I'm nervous haha.
am kinda getting a bit addicted to this channel, I got a wood lathe at my yard, it is nowhere as big but will fit in the rear cabin of my boat i live on, so am thinking of turning wood in my boat workshop, thank you for inspiring me.
I'm glad I logged in for another Jack Mack video.
Thanks man. Was it what you expected?
Lovely final piece 👍
To those saying they prefer the bare wood, as a turner myself (hobby level) you can get a little bored of the same finishes, so fully understand trying new things and finishes. I really like the effect and will try something like thus myself, especially on wood thats a little more plain.
Exactly..plus, id never cover the wood fully.. you can literally see the whole piece on the inside. Thanks for watching
I would love to see this in person. Greg's work as well!
I've done a number of paintings on wood panels and did some woodworking in art school, but never thought to combine the two. I might have to give that a shot -- looks like Greg's work keeps inspiring!
There's definitely something promising in that raised burn finish as well if you or anyone else wants to explore it.
Thanks. Im in the process of exploring that. Playing with a few ideas. I’d love to hear yours.
Will post a video soon
Yup, that is definitely one long mile of beautiful genius😁
Haha thanks Maddie. How are you?
@@JackMackWoodturning I am fantastic 😊 thank you 🌷
The interior appears gilded in wood. Beautiful effect.
I don't know how I missed this one. Jack I know this was a lot of work, and it looks great. The high light sets it off.❤
Wow Jack! I've always loved you from the beginning 🤩 just love you man and the family
Thanks a lot D. How are you man?
Doing well good man! Spring and sunshine is just around the corner
I loved the bowl before you put all the indentions on the sides, but I have to say your vision was different than mine and I rather like yours after seeing it. Great job and thank you for sharing your work with us!!
Would be nice to do another one with the paint varnished after scorching it. Looks beautiful and fun to do.
That’s coming too 😉
That is so Beautiful. The dry brushing of that aqua colour just made the whole decoration pop!
Nice one L. Glad you enjoyed it 😊
@@JackMackWoodturning I did as well. What medium did you use to do that with? I just bought some beautiful blue micah powder and I'm looking for something non-epoxy related to do with it.
Fantastic effect on the bowl
Thanks Spark. How are you?
@JackMackWoodturning doing good, been working on craft boxes
I love how many different artistic viewpoints there are and thank you for sharing yours.
I use both spalted and clear woods, for instance. The spalted ones I'll leave clean (usually) and I'll use fun techniques like what you showed for the more bland and "vanilla" wood. I love the highspeed drill pockmarks; I call them either "moon crater" or "bone marrow" when I use them. What a great idea to burn the top edges after you drill them out! I'll have to try that. Normally when I use a torch it's to create those ripples in the winter rings via a wire brush on, say, oak or ash or elm.
Cheers again for sharing your artistic vision!
Your finished piece is stunning! 😊 I’m saddened by all of the undeserved rude and mean comments. If you doesn’t like it, why the need for such meanness? It’s one thing to state a preference. It’s an entirely other matter when it’s rude and hateful. Be kind, people! His art and talent is inspiring!
This is what the internet does, it amplifies people. It also amplifies lovely people like yourself. 👍🏻
The reason for the mean comments is the title you chose. Genius?
@hbsbos read the description… genius… ffs 🤣
@hbsbos or you could read the pinned comment too.. plenty opportunities for you to not make a fool of yourself 👍🏻
if you don't like comments don't read them
I could do that too!!! Just need the tools, brain, patience, creativity and intelligence lol. Beautiful work as always, Jack 🤩
You definitely could. Are you going to ?
As an old carpenter by trade I sure would love to. But, TH-cam will have to do it for me. That why I swing by and watch your work. Thank you for that. Besides, we´re saving up for a new car and caravan. It would not sit well with Mrs. Kolddk if i spent all the money on tools 😂
I was about to comment that I do this stuff all the time in my head. I just wish my hands and fingers would cooperate! 😂😂
I can do it in my sleep 😂 …. Only in my sleep 😂😂
I think it's funny you can do that too........... Buuttt... your needs are more then getting it done... Lol agreed beautiful work. I could do it too😂 if I only had the muscle. 🤣👍
Beautiful work! Greg truly is inspiring. Props!
That's absolutely gorgeous. Love the colours. ❤❤❤❤❤😊
Thanks Karen
Love it. Your work is beautiful and gives hours of fascinating entertainment m. I like the bowl once you embellished the raised part
Beautiful wood art.
Thank you very much! Where are you watching from?
@@JackMackWoodturning Queensland Australia.
@@JackMackWoodturning Except you covered up the fucking wood's natural art. 🤦🏼
I'm really torn, I loved the simple bowl because I love seeing natural wood....but the end product is truly interesting, definite conversation piece.
Glad you enjoyed it. Would you have it on your table?
@@JackMackWoodturning DEFINITELY, amazing statement piece.
Nice one! Glad you think so 😊
The end product was great 👍
Gorgeous 💙💙💙
Thank you! 😊

Your creativity seems to know no bounds. Amazing!
Thanks K. Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Absolutely amazing. This piece is beautiful. 😊
Oh man that is inspiring sir!! Great accent color choice.

It is pretty. MyselfbI preferred the non painted stage. The wood looked fabulous. Very interesting to see all the steps taken. Thank you for sharing. 😊😊
`Very beautiful
Nice one. You been fishing lately?

Brilliant just brillant!!! Beautiful results!! Wish I had it!!!
Thanks for your inspiring work!!!
Thanks so much 😊 Why don’t you make one?
You are right! I should try to make one. I'm sure I could find a facility that has the equipment.
Really appreciate taking the time to answer back!
Hope you're having a great weekend!@@JackMackWoodturning
Absolutely magnificent work sir.

@JackMackWoodturning Hi Jack I'm going good thanks working and on the weekend a go aut whit my wife
WHAT A BEAUTIFUL GIFT YOU HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH FROM ALMIGHTY GOD,
WELL DONE
I've never seen anything like this. It's absolutely gorgeous.
Stunning! As I told you many time- museum exhibition ready!
Stunning from start to finish!
Has to be one of your best!!! I wasn't sure I was going to like it but it turned out beautiful!!
I liked it both after the turning and after the treatment too. I thought you were going to fill the holes with a coloured resin so when you painted it black I thought …what the!! 😮 but I have learned not to judge until the finished product appears, and that was the right thing because the end product was amazing. Well done you
Thanks P. Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Yeah think it could have looked great varnished before or after being burned.
Loved it woodburned
Beautiful result! Absolutely gorgeous. Thank you for sharing your inspiration, your time and your adventure.👍🤟🪡🎨
Great work and nice to see color added very pretty!!!!!!! From Ohio
Nice one. What’s it like there?
What in the world are you going to think up next Jack Mack...Stunning ! So cool.
Thanks.. but this one is inspired by another artist. I credit in in the video. Check out his website link in the pinned comment 👍🏻
Form, texture, layers of color and then gold interior? Would look splendid in my New York penthouse apartment. If I had one, that is. I like the stretch of your talents in this piece, J. Clever boy.

Great work Jack. I actually liked the addition of the blue paint but everyone to their own!
LOVE IT !!! 😮😮😮 ethereal is the right word.
Stunning!!!
Haha! From the 8 minute mark, it looked like a beehive and sounded like it was populated with a couple of bees.
Haha! Are you a bee keeper by any chance?
If only I were so brave. :D

I like this best before u painted it. ❤ I love the "torched wood" look u gave it.
The burning of the dumpling reminds me of a lamp I once saw.
I really like the way this turned out. I’ve never seen anything quite like it.!! I also like the burnt effect that was awfully interesting as well!!
Truly a work of art!💥💥💥💥💥
Thanks a lot! Glad you enjoyed it 😊
Когда смотришь на работу мастера, кажется что это так просто. А не у всех получается такое чудо, как у вас🎉🎉🎉

'Once again the patience of Job turns out a beautiful work of art. Regardless of who it's inspired by, you are a master!
You are very talented. And made a beautiful bowl. I love to watch the woodworking shows. Thank you for letting me see the work that goes into making these great bowls
Looks like a coral 🎉🎉🎉
I was thinking the same.. definitely something from the sea right ?
Gorgeous!! ❤

Stunning!!! Reminds me of coral in the deep sea!!!
Simply beautiful!
Thank you for Sharing

Another awesome work of art! Love this! Thanks for sharing! Loving it from Louisiana!
Thanks for watching buddy
This is a different level of beautiful.
I actually liked the toasted version but the final outcome was pretty spectacular as well. Nice job!
Very nice dragon egg bowl:) I feel so pleased
Beautiful Jack.
The burnt finish looked great. I was surprised it was painted over. What did the burning achieve - paint prep?
It softened the sharp edge and removed the fluff.
Wow, that's awesome
Nice one! Where are you watching from?
I'm from Alberta, Canada
This is really cool. Question though, wasn't the torching pointless if you just painted over it? What am I missing? I'm sure there was a reason you did it.
Great piece, thank you for sharing! Keep doing what you do, something unique and interesting in every video!
Thank you Johnny, as long as you guys still want to watch il keep making videos 🤙🏻
We where taught wood turning at school as part 9f our wood work lessons its such a shame schools have stopped these sorts of hands on skills
The youth of today are too busy on their phones texting, talking, taking selfies, you name it. I think it's a good thing. Less liability.
I graduated in 89 and took wood shop instead of home ec. I already knew how to cook. Many of my fellow classmates just wouldn't pay attention, fooled around, etc, you name it. I think it's a good thing. Less liability.
Very Very "New Age" with a sorta" Out of this World Look"!
I Love the "Color 🎨"!
Sincerely 🤠 Mr Severance,
"The Cake 🍰🎂🥳🎉 Man".
Very very good and perfect
Thanks A. Glad you enjoyed it 😊 Where are you watching from?
@@JackMackWoodturning iran
Incredible as usual Jack thanks for sharing
VERY NICE JOB! I'm curious. What impact did the scorching have as you later painted over it?
I was thinking the exact same thing.
My guess is it takes off the rough edges, and removes the need for sanding before paint.
Can you imagine how long and tedious the sanding process would be for that piece?
Scorching would remove stray fibers from creating texture. It also tightens wood, making raised texture more durable
But What about the residue from scorching it
Wow beautiful piece.
Wowwww, that is truly stunning and one of your most unique and beautiful pieces yet. A true work of art. Thank you.
Oh damn real great i steal some of the design 🎉🎉
