I have the perfect way to do it. With no cocking no frog tape. Just plain old masking tape I'm going to make a video tomorrow then you'll see it I've been doing this 30 years. Pat the painter
Hi Natalee, we tried your technique today and it worked perfectly! We couldn't believe how crisp and clean the lines were! Thank you so much for the tip! All we have to do now is dress the room! Irene & Dom, UK. I would like to add a photo but not sure how to?
I just want to say that your tip for stopping the bleeding with the painters tape was a life saver. I did a geometric pattern in my entry way this weekend and had absolutely no bleeding anywhere. I could have cried I was so excited when I removed the tape. You rock. Thanks for posting.
I painted my niche with your idea for the tape. It looked great. I think the painter that came in to paint the rest of the house was impressed. Thank you
Hi, yr hack to stop the colour bleed in the strips is really amazing, bcz I tried this in my bedroom and looks fabulous. Of course the strips are small but people do get impressed when I say it's done by me. So thank you so much for sharing the video 😊lots of love from India.
Thank God for you!! I am always asked to paint for people or decorate/design rooms. And I always have this hatred for painters tape. I’ve been looking for a solution my entire life for this. I’m moving into my new apartment in exactly one week and I can’t wait to do some stripes and try this out!
I like option A! Painters tape is so tricky! Thanks for your tip. I can’t wait to try it. The accent wall looks wonderful. You inspire me to be more brave with colors. Thank you!
This is great if you are painting the base colour AND the strip colour. What about if you are just painting a stripe colour over existing base on a concrete wall? 1) do I just use clear glaze/ valsper? 2) do I wait until that glaze is completely dried before painting the stripe? 3) how long after painting the stripe can I pull off the painters tape? Thanks!
I'm just now watching this for the first time .I've been watching you but I've gone back and was watching some of your older videos .not only does painters tape bleed but don't you just love how it gets stuck and when you take it off part of it doesn't come off😳🤨🤔😉😊😆
This may be a dumb question but I'm going to ask... Do you wait for the paint to totally dry where you painted on the tape so the same color to bleed through before you start painting your different color lines
Thanks for the great tip! I just finished a hallway where I added a couple of narrow stripes to break up all of the white in the hallway. Used your method and it came out wonderfully!
Thank you for The inspiration. I did a grey and White wall in my office and it looks amazing. Thank you for The way you teach, your free prints, your beautiful smile you are a joy. Thank you.
This is the absolute best accent wall i’ve seen. The blue and whit is everything!!!! It really draws you in. I am a renter and inspired by these videos. I’m hoping i can recreate thus look with perl and stick borders perhaps 🙏🏾🙏🏾🙏🏾Thank you so much for sharing.
I used this method recently after watching your video. It worked great! My client was so happy with their nursery! Thanks so much for the expert advice :)
I loved the video. Just painted my orange peel in a niche with the tape on. I hope mine looks as good as yours. I'll let you know. Painters are coming to paint the rest of the house tomorrow.
If I have to apply the second coat on that navy blue one so do I have to wait the first one to totally dry and if I do so will the tape come out easily after the second coat? because it seems like it would scratch the pain a bit
Thank you for this tutorial. I will be using your tips in a family room soon! I dont know which painting you chose, but I would do option A on the strip and option B on your solid Aqua accent wall.
Thanks for this. Doing my first design and seeing leakage was very discouraging. I feel relieved knowing I’ll have a much better turnout with this technique! 👍
I am painting my living in white now. Trying to do a design with a black and white stripe shower curtain on a canvas. I just happen for the first time your video. Thinking should I do stripes instead.
Great Video! Painters tape is definitely a necessity but so frustrating! I saw another video where they bought a jar of Valspar and you just go over the edges of the tape and it creates a seal. You can paint right over it with no issue and no bleeding!
This is so helpful, thankyou. Do you remove the tape whilst the paint is still wet, or once it's dry? Ps, I prefer painting B. The combination of that reminds me of a clothes and homeware brand we have here in the UK called Joules, not sure if you have it there, look it up, I think you'll like it!
Did you let the white you did over the tape dry before going with blue (if so how long?) did you let the 1st blue coat dry before the second coat? (If so how long?) if you have 2 dry coats under the last wet coat, doesn’t that cause problems when you take off your tape??
I let each coat of paint dry fully before moving on otherwise it can cause problems. I also allow the final coat to dry before pulling up the tape. I have not had any problems pulling it off. I think the trick is to not wait too long after it’s fully dry. Wait till it’s dry to the touch but not like a day later. Drying times vary by humidity and temperature.
Designed to the Nines so I just painted my base color over the tape to seal it, now my blue (3M edge lock) tape is wrinkling. Should I be concerned? Why is this happening?
Mine always wrinkles a little bit. I wouldn’t worry too much. If you have to go back in and touch up a little here and there with a small craft brush it will still be much better than had you done it without sealing the edges. 😃 if you are worried, try adding your darker color in a very small area and letting that dry and then pull back the tape in that small area to see if it bleeds heavily or not. 🍀Good luck!
Designed to the Nines Thank you so much! I followed your advice and everything turned out perfect! Thanks for taking the time to reply to my novice questions! My room looks amazing thanks to you! I wish I could post a pic so you could see it! You are the best!
If you were just doing 1 inch stripe. I would get 1 inch tape and use the tape as a guide... I use the same technique on smaller stripes on craft projects all the time and it works perfectly.
@@designedtothenines I actually took a makeup sponge for the first 2 coats to "seal" like you advised, then followed up with a regular art brush. I figured less "hair" would prevent the excess paint from leaking. It worked like a charm! Thank you for your tips! I wish I hadn't waited till halfway through to reach out! Lol
Great job you did! Next time you wanna try put caulking on the edge of the tape line and peel it off right after painting before the caulking dry. Credit to Idaho painters
Your stripes are perfect! Thank you for sharing your skills and knowledge. This gives me the courage to do my next home improvement project. By the way, what paint did you use before the navy blue. Is that a primer? With regards to the artwork, I like option A because option B has too much blue in it. Thanks!
Thank you for your quick response. I’m sorry. I think I need to rephrase my question. I noticed that you painted white paint on that same spot where you later painted with blue. What white paint is that? Is that a primer then blue paint?
No it's not a primer. She used the same white paint as she used when she painted over her entire wall.....Eggshell white from Sherwin Williams. Yes she painted over the white wall with the same white paint along the tape lines and then painted the blue over it. That is her painting stripes tip on how to avoid the bleeding. If it does bleed then it will bleed white first and not the colored paint.
Thank you so much. Loved your tips for straight lines. I liked Option B - I like the navy in the picture, will go well with the navy stripe. Great job!
Sherwin-Williams naval blue is my go to navy blue. It’s perfect. The sheen is satin. And I did the white in an eggshell so there’s also that contrast as well. Good luck!😃
Option A for your artwork, because option B has too much dark blue in it which distracts the eye. Or, something with more light blue or "teal-like" hues in it. But yeah, great job on your stripes! I like it!
How do you get perfectly straight lines across the length of the room ? Do you use a laser line or chalk line or line level ? What's the trick there ? Thank you in advance ?
Do you also have a love-hate relationship with painter's tape? Which art piece should I hang on my newly striped wall? Let me know!
Option b

Thank you for sharing how to do the strips. Getting ready to do it for the nursery
You are right about the painter's tape. Just painted a stripe in the half bath and was so careful but it bleed. You tube to the resuce.
That pesky necessary evil painters tape! 😂 Glad to help!

How long did you wait for the white paint to dry when you painted on the painter's tape?
Where do I put the tape? On the marks or on the sides of them? If so which side?
I love it I want to do the same size & color to my walk-in closet. You made it look so simple. ❤

your tutorial was VERY helpful thanks for the help of what to and more important what not to do.
Do you use latex for both the white and the black ?
Yes. I use all latex for interior jobs and oil for exterior primarily.
What sheen did you use? Eggshell and what else?
I believe the other was satin.
My daughter and I agree with Option B!
How did you make that little paint storage shelf
Genius! Any recommendations for 1in stripes? I'm beyond frustrated with my project!

This is genius! I've used the paintable caulk and it never works. I will be using this method next
Thank you for posting; you just made my idea to do a stripe accent wall easier. Beautiful job!
How long can you leave the tape on the wall without peeling off the new paint with it. I can't complete it in one day.

Sorry extra white Eggshell

Thank you for all the tips! I like option A - it stands out more.
I’m painting a room for my baby boy and will be doing stripes!
Awesome! Thank you! 😃 Good luck with your project!
You are amazing. I Liv watching you so much. I have learned so much from you. I Lov both art but i choose lotion a. Xoxo.
What did you seal the tape with did you say the white paint
Yes. You seal tape with the original wall color. That way when it bleeds it bleeds the wall color that’s already there. 😉
Extremely helpful thanks so much!!
Beautiful. Definitely go with option A
Thank you 🙏
Thank you for the tips! I like picture A
Thank you so much. Loved your tips for straight lines. I liked Option B - I like the navy in the picture, will go well with the navy stripe. Great job!
That’s the option I went with and it’s hanging in that room. Thanks for watching!😃
Thanks for the Tip! Doing this tomorrow
Option B. Absolutely! Where did you buy it? Love it. Thx.
I got it at Ross several months ago. Thank you so much!
I found the print at World Market and Kohls (on sale, yay!) So, last question, what is the name/brand of the navy paint?
Thank you for tip on pulling tape at 45 degree angle(made alot of sense), looking forward to your upcoming challenge, I like option A, tfs
+mrs vee Thank you sooo much! I am really excited to see what everyone comes up with for the challenge ! 😊💕
you made it so much fun
100% agree with you, painters tape is a necessary evil! How long do you let the strips dry before pulling off the tape?
Theresa Green til the last layer of paint is not wet, but just barely.😃
@@designedtothenines Thank you!

option B...helpful video..

Do you use a laser line or chalk line or line level ?
What's the trick there ?

Option B matches the walls
After u sealed the painters tape with the white, did u wait a full day to dry before applying the navy?
No. Just until dry to touch.😃
my wall is 91 ⅞ inches in height , how wide would my lines have to be, if i wanna make 11 lines also...😅
Painted a stripe to divide two colors in my living room and it totally leaked under this exact tape, so sad 😭 Thank you for the video
Yes painters tape totally serves a purpose… But I found it always leaks. Especially if there’s any texture on the wall. Thanks for watching!

Question: Do you wait for the original color to dry against the tape before painting the stripe color? I am wondering how long to wait…
I have to paint stripes tonight..Wish me luck!
Good luck! You got this! 👍🏻
Best option B
It always bleeds I have to always go back in and use a fine paint brush for the bleeding lines..
I feel you! That’s why I like this method because if it bleeds, it bleeds on itself the original color. 😃
option B hands down
Like B looks so much better lo e the wall
Thank you so much! Paint can do so much!
Option B
Option A for sure....B gets lost against the stripes......needs the white and pinks of A to compete
