Creating Perfect Cut In Lines; Sealing the Tape with Paint Vs. Frog Tape

  • www.askdavethepainter.com I do an experiment comparing the method I use to create my cut in lines vs. using Frog Tape. The samples are done on a textured wall. I tape using safe release tape and use paint to seal the tape. With the Frog Tape, with one piece I just apply it to the wall, and with the second piece, I run a wet rag over the piece of tape and let that dry before painting.

    Awesome technique for sharp cut-in lines! Perfect for homeowners that don't have tons of painting experience. I got amazing results the the first time.

    thanks for the video!
    I only recently heard about sealing frog tape with water before painting. I have a textured wall and will try that today to paint around a newly renovated bar area.
    It’s funny in the video he says what’s the point of using frog tape if you have to seal it (with a damp rag) and then he goes on to seal the blue tape with paint - which takes longer to dry. Lol
    Over time, I’ll try both and figure out which works best for me. We are new to our home and don’t have all the original paint, so for now the technique of sealing with blue tape + the original paint color wouldn’t be an option.
    Thanks!

    Thank you. I found frog tape to aggressive damaging paint. Will try your blue tape technique.

      Thanks for the comment. The blue safe release tape that I used in the video is now purple in color, but the same number (Scotch's Edge Lock, the 2080). You could also use the Frog Tape that is yellow, it's their low adhesion tape. If you use the Frog Tape, I, of course, still recommend sealing the tape with paint.

    Worked like a charm! Thank you so much for this video. Our walls have medium/heavy orange peel texture and getting sharp lines was nearly impossible. The only issue I have now is with the paint peeling off with the tape, BUT what people don't seem to understand is that this is a result of improper prep when the wall was painted in the first place.....

      I have another video which covers problems with paint peeling off because of tape if you are interested. The problems section starts about a minute into the video.

      @@DaveMartin Thanks for the link! My peeling problems were related to the original paint in the house (~1980's) not having a good bond with the drywall. When I peeled the tape off, I was getting all of the paint layers down to the drywall. Mostly it was fine, but there were sections I had to go back and texture/prime/repaint. In the end, it looks great thanks to your method!

    If I use the base coat seal method, can can I come back with a second coat with the same tape?

    I didn't know about the wetting frog tape trick, but my experience with frog tape matched this, meaning it was not worth the extra price. Sadly, the best answer is what you did w/ the blue tape...that is what I've done in the past. But it takes a lot more time.

    If you don't have the base paint on hand then you can use chalking instead. Chalking will provide the seal as well.

      Could you explain what you mean by "chalking"? Literally putting chalk dust on it?

    Thanks so much for the video man, this with a few other videos has me convinced that making tape + sealing with the base colour is the way to go.

      No worries, I'm glad it was helpful. I also appreciate the comment about cutting in freehand, it's not easy without lots of practice! I still use tape as I think it looks better, Here is a video on taping vs. freehand if you are interested.

    When removing tape that has 2-3 layers of dried paint don't you have a sturdy bridge between the tape and the surface you're painting? How to avoid pulling off paint when pulling tape? Would be helpful to know your method for tape removal.

    Question, would this work if I’m trying to protect a red paint on a wall edge? Wouldn’t the red show through the white?

    • @DaveMartin
      @DaveMartin  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      A good paint will cover the red, but it will most likely require at least 2 coats of paint. Is that what you mean?
      My guess is you are trying to protect the red, so you are going to tape to the red; you will then seal the tape with the red paint. Finally you would use the white to cover the red.
      Please let me know if I have it correct. Thanks!

      It's 3M's Delicate Surface tape (2080). They are not making it in blue anymore, it's now a light purple color.

    Instructions on back of Frog Tape say, "Remove immediately after painting, while paint is still wet". We have used Frog tape on textured walls with no issues...we also followed their instructions.
    IMO to properly test a product you need to follow the manufacturers directions. If you decide to wing it the outcome may not give the desired end result. Have you ever heard the saying...GARBAGE IN, GARBAGE OUT? Might apply here.
    Looks like your blue tape worked nicely too, thanks for sharing.

    • @DaveMartin
      @DaveMartin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey, thanks for the comment. You're correct, I did not read the instructions in detail.
      But now my case against using Frog Tape would be stronger as this channel is meant for novices. Professionals can paint and remove tape as they are painting in a timely manner, but it's harder for people with little to no experience with painting to move at a speed that is necessary so they don't run into issues. Frog Tape, using the instructions, is now like doing the taping/caulk method which I do not recommend for people with little to no experience painting (professional painters sure, but not for novices).
      I will in the future remedy the problem with a new video and discuss what you have pointed out.
      Thanks for the feedback.

      Removing wet? Well, almost all cut ins need two coats so….. at some point it needed to dry. and also, if it shows bleeding when dry, it must have been wet (bleed through in the first place) before it dried lol

    • @KontrollerModz
      @KontrollerModz 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@terilachonce280 paints dries but not fully cures within 1 hours and at that point you can still do the second coat, and peel it off. Right? p

  • @christophermondo

    the spacing of the lines is different in the reveal than when he's applying the paint. also the top of the blue tape line that he did prime has more bleed thru than either green tape line. he painted the top of the blue tape to seal but then points to the bottom line that he did not coat w/ paint, lol.

    How much are they paying you for this.? I'd have preferred to see you tear the tape off. Frog tape is just as good as your blue tape and, I don't believe for a minute that the wall you painted was the wall you showed at the end of your video, shame on you.

    • @DaveMartin
      @DaveMartin  3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'm not being compensated for anything on my site. And the final shot was of the original, I just moved the camera in.
      I'm also confused by what you are upset at; are you suggesting that Frog Tape actually works on a textured wall? Frog Tape alone on a textured wall, does not work without sealing it (like I did with the blue tape).
