- Many seniors like Terry are facing some difficult decisions....Live a limited existence on a meager social security income or consider becoming a nomad living in a trailer like Terry, or rv, camper or evan a car. Terry found a way to pay only $26 rent a.month for most of the year. He is also part of a community of fellow boondocking nomads. He is loving his life. This is not for.everyone, but it works for Terry. Check out the trailer Terry modified adding 600 watts of solar and other changes to make for a comfortable tiiny house on wheels. Ya well it's going way up because everyone got on TH-cam and started making these videos. It was meant for people that camped a lot not for people to use as a residence.
Yeah, well it was never meant for seniors to have to live on the streets because they can't afford rent after working their entire adult lives. Unfortunately in this country there is not enough affordable housing and more and more seniors are being forced to make choices such as LYVAs just to survive. If I can help seniors who are desperate and need this information I will continue to provide it. Even if it upsets "campers" who have other options.
@@gloriouslifeonwheels3621 lol, I'm disabled and can't even afford low income housing. I didn't say there was anything wrong with it. I said that's not what is was meant for and everyone spreading the word that they've found a good thing is why they are jacking the prices up. So don't take it out on me. I'll give an example - There was about 3 places you could camp for free on the Oregon Coast and had been free for forever but then people started making TH-cam videos about camping for free at these gorgeous spots blah, blah, blah. Within about 2 years spots were shut down and no camping signs posted. This is why fishermen keep their favorite fishing spots a secret. Fastest way to ruin a good thing is to tell everyone under the Sun about it.

I bought a 1994 dodge camper van. I have been living in it for 2 years And love
Living in it. I have two hundred watts of solar with 300 watts of battery. So far all my living has been free.i only buy food, water, propane and gas.oh ya, im 84 yrs old.
You are successfully making ends meet in these days of unaffordable housing. I'm just a "kid" at 74 starting out doing the same thing in my '84 Nissan mini motorhome. It's old, but reliable, w/ manual trans., 4-cyl engine [17 mpg], and a working cassette player/radio in the dash. Who could ask for more?

I really admire Terry for taking charge of his life in this way. May his travels continue for as long as he chooses.
I do as well. Terry saw his future and didn't.like what he saw and decided to change it. I hope this video will encourage others to do likewise. Not necessarily by becoming nomads but by doing something proactive to make their lives better.

Thank you for this interview. We’ve been on the road for five years (retirees, fixed income) and were just talking today about the option of going into an apartment. We are so glad we watched this today. We both feel maybe we’d be in the same boat if we went into an apartment, just stuck looking out the window when we were used to having our freedom.

Renting today is a rip off …… for many home ownership is also getting out of hand
If u have a Reliable Vehicle I Strongly suggest you give the moving life a try! You won't regret it!
Rents are incredibly high unless you get in a hud senior property. I'm in a senior hud property and pay a little over $200/mo rent. It's a secure bldg and well run. Many are buying a shed as a tiny home. That prob wld be a much better solution than an apt cost. If you purchase an acre of land cheaply and have a shed delivered there, low cost, if you get a low mo rate on the shed and lot. Unless you could pay one of both outright. I know someone who did that and has lived cheaply. After he paid off the shed, he ordered a second one and connected them. He did all of his electrical, insulation, plumbing and construction needs.
There is certainly a lot to consider. You might try a short term month to month rental to see how you like it and of you could afford to travel out on weekends???
As we age I feel it's important to have a purpose, have community and be self sufficient all we can. Until we can't. Instead of curling up into a fetal position as life pushes us aside trying harder to live like Terry will only open a path to thrive rather than exist
I feel its important for us all to support each other as a old person family unit .For many and most of us (not all) the best families are families we chose or chose us. Doesn't have to be forever. But we can support each other when when our support is needed
So true we all need a family or community that cares about us whether born into or.chosen.
I'm so awed that people are taking their life back. Quality of life is the way to go. Simply amazing

I built a 10x6 tiny home trailer and parked it on a farm for 500$ a month with inclusive shore power, internet, free water, garbage, snow removal, grass cutting. It will pay for itself the first year of ownership with what I save in rent. I can use it to travel, I enjoy parking it at the beach for the day.

I sold my house 3 years ago and I know I won’t be able to purchase another home NOR do I want to. I’ve been a nomad for 3 years and it’s been the first time in my life I have ever had this much freedom!

In an apartment I felt like I was paying someone elses mortgage...or for at least their expensive vacations...so I thought...I' become a nomad and vacation everywhere...like this gentleman said.." there is so much to see and so much to do...especially if you have all that exorbinate rent..IN YOUR POCKET!!!!

Good for you!! My landlord just jacked up my rent $190/month effective June 1 on my 350 sq ft apartment. I immediately gave my notice to be out May 31 and intend to buy some sort of home on wheels and leave Milwaukee permanently. Then it prompted me to research exactly who owned my building and I found out it’s two wealthy, privileged brothers. One is an attorney/ real estate agent in LA and the other is some executive living in Manhattan. My building is just one of about 20 they own, raising rent on everyone and living the high life off of us. I’m glad I’ve only given them my money for a little over a year. I’m out! I’ll never rent again!

I, too, was desperate to get another small motorhome since my original one was wrecked about 16 yrs ago. I found an even older one ['84] with low mileage for $4,000 and I'm fixing leaks and refreshing some of the old systems. With its little 4-banger engine I won't be going very fast, but I'm so very happy to be able to hit the road, looking for all those free camping spots along the NorthWest's country highways. Independence is awesome.
I totally understand how our system tries to brainwash all of us to be ripped off paying for a little apartment with no life to travel ` I love the nomad Life!!! Freedom on the open road is 👍 great

Terry hits the nail on the head. I will be faced with the same before long. Putting all my money towards rent with nothing left for enjoyment or unexpected things. A trailer really is the answer. I hope more people will consider this.
Having aging parents whilst aging myself doesn't lend the opportunity to just 'hit the road',but I am fortunate to be in a state that does have resources for helping those 62 or older, so I will be able to live in a brick&sticks, save as much as I can, until I'm able to see the wide open spaces. This guy is right "There's so much to see..." Yes, yes there is.

I appreciate Terry's honestly that he will do it "as long as he can" and that he is saving money. I've seen many senior van lifers videos where it's never mentioned their future health problems.

Terry seems like he has the perfect set-up. I would have liked to hear more about how he lives on $28 a month, though! Maybe he's just paying for electricity and parking at friends or family's place, or maybe he owns a piece of property outright? (And maybe, for prvacy reasons, he didn't want to spell it out in more detail?) Good interview, though.
He is on LTVA property ( longterm visitor's area BLM in Quartzsite, Arizona)

It's approx $26/mo for 7 mos to stay on the LTVA Land that Anyone can do. It's $180 for 7 months in Arizona.
@deb7518. Terry stays at Quartside for I believe it is 7 months of the year & you pay $180.00 upfront for the 7 months. It is in the comments what he does. Read some of the previous comments & there is a more detail.

I know a person who purchased a motorhome just for the summer, who then decided to make the motorhome a year round home after leaving their apartment. They receive their mail at a designated post office box and pick up their mail once a week. Their rent was over $1,800 monthly not including utilities, for a total of approximately $2,300 monthly. Their total monthly cost now is approximately $600, they pay for propane, and gas, electric generator fuel, water, food, and satellite tv and computer service. They have ‘direct deposit’ for social security and pension. They park practically anywhere and usually park at Walmart or any place they choose. They save a boatload of money. Never been happier they claim.
Good for Terry ! I will say there is unrestricted land with water that you can buy. If you want an acre or two. It’s out there. I bought my property in 2015. Low low taxes. And the water $8 a month. Free garbage dumping. We put a cabin on it but have at times had a an Rv. So if he gets tired of looking for a place to park there is opportunities to buy a little spot. Many are for sale by owner. I only recommend you close with an attorney so you get a clear title. Terry did the right thing! God bless you Terry! LA

@@carolmaplesden916 I have a homestead for sale. It’s like 11 acres total. I bought it in Tennessee. I don’t want to split up my land into smaller lots because it’s actually 2 - 5/6 acre lots together. Its gorgeous. One lot has a spring feed pond and the springs run all the way through from one lot next to it. It would be just wrong to split them, although they have 2 separate addresses. They are in west Tennessee up by the Tennessee river. South of pickwick. It’s about a 4 minute drive to the river from the driveway so no flooding like the land right on the river. If you know anyone interested in that please let them know. Taxes are low too! On my journey to find that land in 2015 I found lots of places for sale in west Tennessee. All unrestricted land so it ok to live in an Rv or shed cabin. I really thought I was going to retire there. But my youngest daughter is getting her doctorate in medicine in May. She’s doing a hospital residency next year. So I’m moving to Florida to live closer to her. I look at land and compare realty prices all the time. I will save your information and let you know if I see something good that is 2- 3 acres. I want to warn you to be careful about buying land from an individual. Because many will say I’ll meet you at the courthouse and sign it over into your name. It’s cheaper that way and it’s legal because it will be in your name and tax bill will come to you. The problem comes in when the person who sold it an signed it over to you passes away. His relatives could come after you. No body wants to go through that. If you go ahead and have an attorney handle a closing for a couple hundred dollars you get a clear title. It’s the proper way to purchase land. An honest seller would want you to have a clear title. Insist on it. I’ll be looking and will let you know. You can look at west Tennessee all the little towns along the river. And really all over Tennessee you can find owners selling a little lot of land. What I like about the place I am selling is that a new owner could offer weekend camping or boat storage. Or maybe put a couple little cabins up to rent out to boaters / fishermen coming from the city for the weekend. My place has a shed cabin and 2 barns an old Rv , vintage . All needs work but to the right person they could do well there living , an making money right on the property. Blackberries & muscadine grapes grow wild. It has a peaceful feeling. But I will not lie it needs work. Definitely a diamond in the rough. I’ll message you when I find something interesting in that 1-2-3 acre size. God bless ! Leslye

That’s a long video but it shows a good bit of the corner property. It’s a big place. You could definitely offer RV parking to many friends. It’s also very private. But you still have a very small town feel with a couple stores , post office, a restaurant. One couple turned and old hardware stores into an air BB on the top floor and it stays rented out with all the people who fish and boat up at the river. I’ll tell you more in the email. Just as there is a period of time between work and retirement when you have to make the decision to retire, I think there is a period between your retirement and the time you must stop driving. Glad that Terry is living in that "sweet spot" as a nomad!

Just admire his insight for looking around to the existence of those around him and saw how empty and sad it was with little to no money. He took that reality and began making a plan to not end up in those circumstances . That takes planning and commitment on every level. Well there is Quartzsite during the winter and with the America The Beautiful Pass if you want to travel a bit you can park at National Forestd, CORPs of Engineer locations and other spots quite cheaply. If you are 8nterested there are seasonal jobs at campgrounds where you can get free parking ajd hookups and also get paid.

Terry really took stock of his future and patiently and methodically put together a plan to live his life out on his terms. He then brilliantly executed his plan. My hope is that this video will serve to encourage others to take a look in advance at their retirement plans/situation and take action to make adjustments if need be. Not necessarily by becoming a nomad, but by putting together a plan so they won't be caught unawares and end up in sad circumstances.

@@pouglwaw5932If you are asking specifically about Quartzsite, there are literally hundreds of thousands of folks in Quartzsite during the winter. Many many great folks but like anywhere else there are also some who are not. I would suggest if you are going to stay for an extended period of more than two weeks to stay at one of the LTVA locations. Get to know your neighbors and excerise the same caution and good judgment you would when meeting someone anywhere else. If you are friendly you will meet folks, also there are a lot of Facebook groups you can check out. Food is expensive at the two grocery stores in town so when I am there I stock up before arriving and go into Parker to the Walmart a couple of times per month. Also, therr is a Dollar general and Family Dollar in Quartzsite. There are typically campfires at night and that is a good way to get to know people. The Escapees often have a meetup during the summer in Quartzsite and therr are many really nice people in that group. Maybe I will do a video on Quartzsite when I return.

I'm happy for this guy. He escaped the hampster wheel of the American Nightmare! My house is payed off, but I'm stuck living with bad neighbors,who create caos with their drugs and alcohol. I am moving to get away from this maddnes. When you get older you don't enjoy drama!
Sensible folks of any age don't enjoy drama! Thank goodness your house is paid off. That should give you some options.

I lived in NYC for almost 63 years. I never had to drive. I think if I could drive I might have liked doing this instead of downsizing to a co op. Maybe not forever but for a decade at least. 🙂🙂

Well, you gotta remember when you leave back to your Van full-time or trailer or a bus Mini bus or whatever you build, you can't live rent free, and it can be really cheap. Or it can be expensive depending on what you budget and how you budget and how you travel. If you travel every 5 minutes, then your gas prices is going to be equal to your rent, which comes down makes sense. But it does clear you to travel around, but it depends how you do it.
That is true. Some people still spend a fortune doing van ir rv life as they travel so much amd eat out alot while others spend very little as they stay put for longer and prepare their own meals. Typically gas and food are the two biggest expenses and they are easy to control.
We need more camping for elderly and low cost camping ground and also water and electric
I know some people that are doing the same thing. My wife and I bought a 2021 Wildwood 22RBS Forest River Travel Trailer, new. It even has a heated floor. We're using it for camping now. When I retire, we're selling out, buying land in Tennessee and we'll live in it until we can get a cabin built. It's just under 27 feet, it looks a little small, but the inside is huge with the slide out. And the storage, it is everywhere!! To anyone that would want more of a midsize with a lot of space, this trailer and its few variations, are great. Salem has a couple that's similar as well.

Its great to get out and do things and see the planet. The lithium battery should have its own metal box with ventilation and not sit under the sofa chair. When these things go off they produce a lot of heat. Glad to see you enjoy life!

Therr are certainly many things to co sidereal and plan for with any changes ine does in their life. It appears Terry took his time and really.put a good plan together that works for him.

She did say they were in Quartzsite, AZ for the season. The LTVAs in Quartzsite and other areas in the South West are $180 for a 7 month season, that averages out to $26 per month. Included in that is free garbage dumpsters, water and dump stations. The fee is paid up front for the entire season. Or you could do free boon docking on BLM land but must move every 2 weeks, usually about 25 miles away.

I am in the situation Terry was in @ 64 where I just dont make enough money only able to work 3 days a week & my savings are now gone, not sure whats going to happen. I suppose homeless is the inevitable. Happy for this man however. I suppose i wasn't smart enough to plan way ahead like he did, sometimes we just dont think that far in advance, we assume it'll never happen to us, so very wrong.
I bought my small, old, motorhome on SS . It was $4,000. I'm doing the little repairs and updates myself. I just coated the roof with rubberized, white roof-coat. I filled the propane tank for $11. The batteries for solar almost ran me broke [$900.] bit I'll be glad I made the sacrifice later when I'm camping for free in the wilderness. I can run electric appliances and even AC on batteries. You can do it- buy something older and affordable. The newest campers are way, too expensive and complicated. Who needs remote controlled electronics while out camping. Simplicity is king.
Sometimes it is hard to look ahead. There a4e some very inexpensive trailers out there that jeed a bit of work. Sometimes youncan find situations where people will let you pay over time or even donworknin exchange. Also, therr are seasonal jobs a5 campsites where you can work for perhaos 20 hours per week in exchange for a campsite and hookups and even a small salary.

I'm renting a bedroom now at my friend's house. I need some lessons from Terry.
I think the best lesson Terry could give is to prepare in advance and access exactly what your needs are. Also, build an emergency fund as things will arise with any vehicle or rig. There are also a lot of great TH-cam videos out there , especially on Bob Wells channel, Cheap RV Living.

Getting stuck looking out of the window is definitely a consideration. I plan to full time for a while, maybe years if I like it. Then find a college town to settle down in. Many colleges allow retirees to audit classes for free and there is always something going on in a college town. Drama departments have plays, choirs and symphonies have concerts, art departments have exhibitions etc. There are lectures, sports and and all sorts of interesting things. Volunteer opportunities too. Medical facilities can be excellent if there is a teaching hospital affiliated with the university. College towns have more life in them. The last thing I want is to live in a retirement community full of old people who are grouchy because they feel that they missed out on life. Your glass is only half-empty if you choose to see it that way.
DO YOU GET TO LIVE IN THEIR DORMS OR DO YOU PARK YOUR RV OR TRAILER FREE SOME WHERE AND GET MEALS PACKAGES FREE REDUCED...??? JUST TRYING TO FIGURE OUT YOUR TALK HERE SOUNDS VERY INTERESTING SOMETHING I WAS WORKING ON MY BACHELOR RECENTLY .... BUT NOW FUN CLASSES TOO....ILLNESS STOPPED ME AND HUBBY. @M.Campbell
I think you're right about those senior communities, no children allowed. I hear it's no picnic living where a few bitter, nosey, complaining, old "Karens" can ruin things for everyone.
Sounds like you have given a lot of thought to your future plans and that is a wise thing to do.

I notice when you do your tours, you only do from the inside do we never see the outside of the vehicle or what we do. You see the close up of it need to back up your camera so we could see what the vehicle looks like on the outside. I love to see the outside of the vehicle as well.
Actually many of my videos include a walk around the vehicle. But you make a good point. I probably should do that all the time.

The fridge/freezer in my small motorhome is nice, but the new, portable, electric chest type are really the best. Affordable, extremely low power useage, almost silent, and temperature can be reset from 40 degrees down to 12 below zero.
@@pouglwaw5932thank you for that info! I am familiar with chest type fridge/freezers and their efficiencies. Also that because cold air sinks to the bottom, since chest type models open from the top (mostly) the cold air doesn't escape easily like the types of fridge/freezers where doors open out. I was really wanting to know the make/model and energy draw of the larger standup fridge/freezer in this video that has doors that open out though. :)
I see a movie one time I don't want to see it again. I can stand to watch sitcoms over and over because I only have to invest 30 minutes of my time. I would have a huge DVD collection of sitcoms lol.
