Love the collab! Watch both pods weekly. Do you really think Cal would take less than Realmuto? I think his 5/$115m is probably cal’s start point. Would you take 5/$125m or let him walk?
Problem is they kind of have to let Cal walk. They have beat him into the ground so far and if they have to move him to 1B or DH he loses half of his value.
Note that the Braves and Astros relied mostly on their farm system to build out their roster to win a World Series. The Astros and Braves used the draft, then develop the prospects to build their core before resorting to trades and free agents to plug their deficiencies. As Colton Swanson pointed out in the round the table, the increased in payroll was given mostly to their homegrown players. This is natural result of keeping a winning team together. The M’s have to first form a winning core, then spend the money on the core to win. Doing trades and buying free agents are the last resort to plug holes in the roster. To paraphrase Gary HIll Jr on the Couch GM podcast, the farm system is used so that you don’t have to buy an ENTIRE roster. The teams in the top 5 of payrolls are in larger markets than the Seattle. The M’s have to forge the own way to win a World Series much like Kansas City Royals did.
@@MarineLayerPod To paraphrase Colby Patnode , the M’s should follow the Braves, Astros, and Dodgers. They drafted and developed to build roster. They spent their money to extend the own players, but when the time is right and window is open, they would spend to fill holes in their lineup to get over the top. The key is not to BUY the ENTIRE roster through free agency. You need home grown players to fill out the roster and only use free agency to fill holes in the lineup. The M”s are not a big market team like NY or LA. Seattle is on the level of Detroit. Neilsen DMA ratings and Census data prove that out. As Colton Swanson said, we could spend money like the Rockies on Kris Bryant, but that lead to nowhere.
They followed the Braves model, just missed badly on Lewis, White, Toro and Kelenic. Jerry’s entire core is on the roster or has at least played for the team. So they only have two options, they need a $200 million plus payroll to buy or trade for a 1B, 3B and keep their homegrown guys or trade some of their MLB assets now for the next core. If they trade Kirby, Gilbert, Randy, and Cal or Julio, then they have cheap 2027 WS contender.
@@kyleloney4191 Seatltle is not spending $200M so be realistic. The M’s are mid-market team. Their budget should be between $172 to 175M. All the M’s need to do is just get better players at 1B, 2B , 3B or DH with the payroll under $175M. The fWAR score are for DH (1.4), 1B (2.1), 2B (2.4) or 3B (2.7) for the M’s. A combined 6 WAR improvement over those 2024 values for those positions will certainly achieve a playoff position. This’ll put us just behind the Dodgers. For example, getting Brent Rooker (DH 5.1 WAR) and Vlad Guerrero (1B 5.5 WAR) would put the M’s above 7.1 WAR over 2024 totals. Alex Bregman (3B 4.1 WAR) would only put 1.4 above 2024 totals.
Moneyball is 100% propoganda. The A’s didn’t win because they added those sabermetrics guys. They won because of all of the players who the movie didn’t show and the book marginalized and pretended they didn’t have the league MVP and Cy Young winner and 3 top 10 vote getters
There are few GM’s that have a track record of building a World Series team with very little resources. I can only think of Jeff Luhnow, but he will tear down the team. If you can suffer through 3 or 4 years of 100+ loss seasons, then Jeff Luhnow is the guy. Jeff tore it down to where the team spent as low as $14M on payroll to high of $44M during the lean years. Jeff has more to work with by trading away Julio, Gilbert and Cal for prospects.

They absolutely do! A total team approach rom the top down!
The mariners came into being two years before i did. I'm not gonna make it another 60+ years!
Based on what you predict, I’ll be dead before they finally win it all! 😩
Scared money don't make no money 🎵
This show rocks.

The M's let Teoscar walk.

That’s fine. But it also means the mariners must pay their core, and not trade them to save money
