I was there in person for his complete game shut out last year. He is crazy to watch. He has had a few innings where he really struggled this year, but I suppose asking him to be god-tier every game is a little unreasonable.

I had a breakdown from that graphic at the end. I’ll offer some constructive criticism: The main one - panning from right to left when introducing the graphic makes it hard to read in English. no title/poorly located title Arguably excessively ‘busy’ or cluttered (could have made the white points a bit smaller, just my opinion). Y axis label maybe too. great video, really like the channel and especially the videos about pitchers.
Maybe it's just the way it was worded in the video by saying "first walk" but the career K/BB stat is simply the ratio of strikeouts to walks over the career. So Kirby throws 7.87 strikeouts per every walk. By saying "first walk" the implication is that he throws on average between 7-8 strikeouts in a game before he throws a walk. When in reality, it doesn't matter when the K or BB is thrown within a single game, or even over the course of the career for that matter. For example, If he gives up a walk at the start of a game but then goes on to throw eight strikeouts without any additional walks, his stat will still improve rather than decline.
his presence in a rotation also has a domino kind of buffing effect : the other pitchers around kirby start to really hate walking players as well, and it becomes a competition in the clubhouse.
Huge M’s fan here. My dad and I bought club level seats before Kirby’s debut was even announced. I’m much more of a prospect nerd than my dad. When they announced his debut, I was elated and had to tell my dad about this dude that hammers the strike zone. He was brilliant and M’s fans have been blessed to watch him ever since. The only pitchers with a better BB/9 all time all pitched in the dead ball era.
He's my favorite pitcher in the rotation. I wonder why they have paired him with Garver these last couple starts. Maybe they think he won't need the benefit of Cal's excellent framing? You dont have to make Kirby's pitches look like strikes, they already look like it and I think his reputation might help him sometimes, kind of like Maddux.
I hate walks too, which is why I love Kirby. There's no defense for walks. Don't let the batters beat you with walks. Make them earn it by hitting the ball. I've always believed in this bit of wisdom.
Was at that Mariners vs Orioles game. Unbelievable start from Kirby. Great way to honor Felix's Mariner HOF induction ceremony. Kinda fitting he got a no decision on 9 scoreless innings pitches. Felix knew all too well
Great video! George Kirby is insanely talented, our best pitcher since Felix imo, even with Castillo on the roster. Looking forward to watching him for the next decade plus in Seattle!
@@funkerman7 Ownership paid Felix, Cano, Castillo, even Julio. I believe John Stanton is cheap, but not stupid. We'll resign Kirby and likely look to trade Luis Castillo in a few years just like we did with Robbie Ray last offseason.
I feel bad for the Ms rotation. It's likely the best in all of baseball and they don't get ANY support from the offense. The Ms should be knocking on 100 wins this year if they had even a mediocre offense.
Kirby walked 23 in 191 innings, but he also allowed 181 hits (most in the MLB this year) Brett Saberhagen walked 13 in 177 IP’s thirty years ago en route to a 14-4 season a year after the Mets flopped to 59-103. I don’t recall Bret facing teams like the M’s in his day, who just a month ago were hitting .216 as a team. Kirby doesn’t have to worry about painting corners as often as hurlers needed to back then, weren’t many 30 HR’s/200 K’s players in the 90’s. 🙄
I threw a forkball that knuckled a great deal. Knuckleballs/forkballs are definitely not the route to go if you don't want to walk batters. The movement is out of this world, but control/command is not happening. Kirby's power and command are exceptional. I greatly enjoy watching him pitch.

I was at that August 12th, 2023 game. It was Felix Hernandez Hall of Fame Induction Night. We lost 1-0 in 10 innings. Mariners fans will know why that’s funny (or sad, maybe both).
Great write-up on one of my favorite pitchers in the game right now. One small critique of the script: when the subject of a comparison is plural, you use 'fewer' rather than 'less'. For example: Kirby allowed fewer than 20 walks (plural subject) with an ERA (singular subject) of less than 4. Sorry if this comes off as pedantic; I am an unapologetic pedant.
he’s walked a lot more batters this year, and especially in his two starts with Garver catching he’s been throwing a lot more pitches outside of the zone
K/BB ratio is just strikeouts divided by walks like it says in the definition you provided, not an average of strikeouts a pitcher records before allowing a walk. "they all average about five strikeouts before walking the first batter" is not what K/BB means.
my favorite george kirby stat: he is (as of june 11 2024) 23rd on the MLB career BB/9 leaderboard. the last time anyone else in the top 30 pitched was 1892
Tommy Bond played before walks were 4 balls - at first they were 9, then 8, then 6 in the NL, but also at first batters could request "high" or "low" and if the pitcher didn't conform, it would be a ball. Nonetheless, to give up a walk in the 1870s NL was basically walking the same batter twice. Otoh, strikeouts were already at 3 strikes with the advent of modern base ball, and called strikes existed by 1858.
I was at that game against the Orioles. It was King Felix Mariners HOF night. Kirby pitched a helluva game only for the Ms to lose in extras from Cedric Mullins I believe.
the ending reminds me STRONGLY of Chart Party, specifically a video they did about NBA 3 pointers. the end of that video is nearly identical. two highly similar pieces of cinematic masterpiece tbh

I don’t get to watch him much but growing up I took pride in not walking hitters. Love pitchers like him that don’t walk guys and challenge hitters. Awesome video that and chart is nuts
FYI for those wondering, a lot of his ERA was that game against Cleveland where our RF could just not get to the fly balls. It makes sense to me that his FIP is the same but ERA is worse. Our outfield defense has gotten noticably worse.
Him not walking batters is like a poker player that folds 90pct of hands only to play 10pct...u don't wanna go against him when he's playing a hand...kinda like not wanting to take pitches for a walk against kirby.
Kirby is awesome, every Seattle starter is really good this year. It's been fun to watch...... Four of five of the starters were drafted by the Mariners, that's a really good run of success in drafts.
I remember watching Phil Hughes all season long in 2014 when he set the single season SO/W record (11.63). 16 BB with over 200 IP.. it was unbelievable
I went to high school with George and even played Little League against him. Pretty trippy to see TH-cam vids about him lmao. Keep at it George, you’re a beast.
Looking at his extended stats this year, his HR/9 is up by a tad (1.2 vs 1.0) while his BABIP and his Hard Hit % are lower but he's not getting anywhere near as many ground balls so it seems like he's just getting unlucky giving up a few more homers than he did last year and maybe some bloop liners that scored runs. Likely after one of his three wild pitches (he had one all last year)
@@curryboyftw Found out he was an Elon guy because he has been blowing up the league in my OOTP franchise (not for my squad, alas) and it was on his player card. Immediately started paying more heed to his game, and have been thoroughly pleased.
The way i see it if you throw the ball over the plate, the average hitter has between a 25-30% chance to get a hit. If you walk the guy, he has a 100% chance to get on base. Barring a select few hitters and situations i feel it's in the pitcher's favor to challenge the hitter.
He is also the Jamal Murray of Baseball. Kirby needs the light as bright as possible to perform, bro is a big game pitcher. I love the Mariners staff in general but Kirby is by my favorite.
He needn’t worry in today’s game. I saw where Tovar (Rockies SS) had 200 K’s just to produce 26 HR’s. In my day players walked as often as they struck out (look up Gene Tenace’s stats, especially when he was a Padre) now it won’t be long before someone K’s 100+ times and draws zero walks. 🙄
I had no idea Kirby was that damn good. To do a cross sport comparison, which is the ONLY way to find this level of dominance is a stat, you have to look at Wayne Gretzky and his 894 goals 1,963 assists and 2,857 points. The next best player is Jaromír Jágr and his 766 Goals 1155 Assists for 1921 Points. That means that Jagr has fewer points then Gretzky has just assists alone Plot that on a similar sort of graph, and you'd see a similar result. IMO one of the highest honours any athlete can get is to be compared to Wayne Gretzky. he's called "The Great One" for a reason.
when I watched Clay Holmes blow the game vs Mariners by just start walking batter, some of them even down 0-2 and then got a walk, it's just painful. And then I start thinking just throw a damn strike. Maybe they gonna hit it, but we got fielders. Rather take that chance than just keep putting people on base for free
Not mentioning his game 3 ALDS performance is criminal. 7 shoutout innings, 6 Ks, 0 walks, and some of the most hype moments ive seen from a pitcher in awhile. How many pitchers do you know that are diving into the dugout wall to make an out?
When you say his ERA+ means his ERA was 20% above league average, that isn't what ERA+ says. ERA- would say that (if 80). The numerator and denominator are flipped in ERA+. Beyond the box score covers it, but most people use ERA+ wrong.
@@KevinPassino It also isn't referring to the player but the league. Meaning the league's ERA is 20% worse than Kirby's ERA.
