    • @greaser3069
      @greaser3069 3 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      Sure but sometimes especially diesels you have to manually increase rpms due to low oil pressure.

    • @EdgarAlves321
      @EdgarAlves321 3 ปีที่แล้ว +43

      @@andremartiniuskalstadtjosa1309 most modern cars increase rpms at cold start but it is a tiny fraction for a very short period of time. for example, my Audi A3 1.6 FSI always increases around 300 rpms for about 5 seconds, then goes to normal. but you should never rev the engine at cold start on purpose. oil needs time to go to all the parts of the engine and to warm up properly in order to reduce wear.

    • @andremartiniuskalstadtjosa1309
      @andremartiniuskalstadtjosa1309 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      @@EdgarAlves321 If the car doesn't increase the rpm oil will never reach every part of the engine. Oil flow and pressure is much lower at lower temperatures. Some engines will not be able to flow oil at low temperatures if you don't use an appropriate oil for the conditions. You car is a petrol tho, petrol flows way better than diesel at lower temperatures. Diesel need the higher rpms at cold start to get preassure and heat in the fuel to even keep running. My OM646 CDI has an increased idle of about 500rpm on cold starts under about 4 degrees celsius. And stays at 880rpms until it reaches operatint temperature it lowers it down to 770rpm.

      @JoeyRodz74 4 ปีที่แล้ว +66

      @wrxassa Electric vehicles can lose up to 45% of their range in these temperatures. Gas and diesel lose up to 35% of their range as well. Those few minutes while the engine starts and comes up to temperature are almost dry in many vehicles, with metal parts rubbing against each other which increases wear significantly. EVs don't have this issue since the far fewer moving parts are in direct contact with lubricants at all times.
      You can "start" a Tesla remotely, heat up the cabin and have the most of the snow and ice melt away before you even get to the car. If you don't have ice to melt, there is no wait time in getting a Tesla to drive away.

    dunno why I'm watching this, I've lived in Siberia for 30 years and almost every winter day I was starting the engine in a pretty similar manner. Not every start was successful, sometimes I had to get a warm charged battery or even to call guys who use big heat guns to heat up the engine so it could spin easier. Needless to say that each such cold start greatly reduces your engine's lifetime, so everyone tries to find a solution for cold starts. Most of us use so called "auto-heating", when your car is basically started every 2-4 hours automatically and runs for 15-20 minutes. Consumes a lot of fuel, but this way you get higher chances to drive to your office in the morning, instead of walking in -35C :>

    not sure what would happen at -50C, but the most I ever had on my Lexus IS250 was ~-32C overnight and I came to drive it ~8AM when temperature have already increased a little bit ~-25C. And car started on quarter turn instantly like normal, the "cold start" engine noise was little bit louder than normal once it was running, but there were no funny noises from struggling battery or winging starter. One slightly unusual thing was that knowing I will be driving over 3000miles over the week on motorway and at the same time I will be going into the country with deep winters I decided to put different engine oil. Instead on standard Castrol 5W30 for the car I had Mobil 1 0W40, extending both cold and hot temp protection. At the time of starting I have covered ~2000miles already, but I did that in like 4 days - so we can say the oil was almost new. I would imagine with old 10000 miles and 1 year old oil the story may have been slightly different.

    When I was in high school we had a particularly cold winter in Indiana. One morning I got up and went out to start my car before school, it cranked right away. There was a horrible screeching sound and and odd smell, turns out that the water pump was stuck due to frozen or slushy coolant. It was -15f or so. I imagine the failure was in part to slushy coolant and an accessory belt with about 90k miles on it. Anyway, I drove to and from school with the battery light on (I figured it was just because it was so damn cold). After school, an elderly neighbor asked me to take her to the grocery store, so I did. On the way home from the grocery the battery died. So I'm dead along the side of the road with an 83 year old woman. Fortunately we weren't far from home and a neighbor recognized my car and gave us a jump 3 or 4 times before we finally made it home.
