Hi Ryan, I had a customer send me your video and informed me you invited John and I to comment. I’ll add a couple points.
    1. As part of the settlement HD had with the EPA back several years ago, HD is not allowed to honor warranty on a bike tuned with a non-EPA compliant tuner. This only applies to 2017 and newer. Changes things doesn’t it? So all the hatred directed at HD for declining warranty claims on engines is misguided because it isn’t necessarily their choice. The bottom line is most aftermarket tuners are ILLEGAL. Unfortunately, HD has to be the one who enforces the law by way of not honoring warranty. Not really fair.
    2. I gotta ask everyone. Is it really fair that HD has to pay warranty claims on mechanical failures that involve aftermarket parts installed by weekend warriors? By the way after market parts don’t blanket void the bike’s entire warranty. Engine components (think cams, pistons, etc) and tuners are the worst and will void the power train warranty but not the rest of the bike. Mufflers don’t void the warranty. I personally run rineharts and have a extended service plan that is still good.
    3. Screamin’ eagle mufflers are less expensive than the leading aftermarket brand mufflers.
    4. Extended service plan (esp) (commonly referred as extended warranty) is available anywhere from an additional 1-5 years added to the end of the 2 year factory warranty. Not just 3 or 5 years. You can keep extending as long as you’re under 75k miles and the bike isn’t older than 11 years old.
    5. I personally have been thanked hundreds of times by people I have sold the extended warranty to. I have seen HD pay for just about every possible mechanical failure thinkable over the years. Do a lot of people ride their bike with no issues? Yes, HD makes awesome bikes as you said. I personally have had the ESP on all my bikes and I have all the resources in the world when it comes to getting my stuff repaired. Bottom line, no one will give me free parts or work on my bike for free when something breaks. Some technicians in our shop buy the ESP. These are guys who can do the work themselves, but don’t get replacement parts for free. Plus, now they are working on their bike and getting paid for it.
    6. Most “Do-it-yourself” add-ons will never void any major part of your bike’s warranty. So tinker away and enjoy making your bike “your own”
    7. Also, when you walk into a dealership no one is forcing you to buy a stupid tee-shirt. 😂 I know you’re joking though. I laughed.
    8. I think everyone assumes HD is forcing people to buy their products because they are greedy. Yes, HD wants to make money by selling products. The bigger reason is that their HD components are LEGAL and are designed by the people who built the bike! They aren’t gonna pay for failures on other companies products and honor warranty claims that could send them to court and fined up the ass.
Hopefully this helps. Ryan we should ride sometime. I like your content. I feel like it’s been very negative lately though. Why not give HD the benefit of the doubt sometimes? Your channel is about the love of HD motorcycling right? You like your Harley Davidson motorcycle right? Try a positive video next time. Stop advocating that Harley owners are victims. Enjoy the ride.

Great comments Matt. Thanks for jumping on over here with your insight. Great info & thanks for taking the time. I highly respect your opinions. You are always welcome here on this channel brother. We will definitely have to hook up and ride sometime Matt! It would be a great time. I'm glad you understand my ridiculous style of humor and the Harley T-shirts etc......I mean no harm, but am just having fun. I hope everyone knows that is just for fun...... I bleed Harley and own 3 of them. Heck, I ride a 2018 Harley-Davidson Electra Glide every day at my main Police Motorcycle Officer career. I absolutely would not want to ride anything else at my job & am a brand loyalist. I love my Police Harley! This channel tries to bring Harley owner's together as a community. We speak of both what we love about Harley and what we are disappointed with. Obviously, with the comments on this video alone and others, you can see how many customers have become disappointed with Harley's approach to things recently. Honestly, and I think you can agree, Harley does a horrible job at communicating with their customers directly. It's channels like yours, John's, and mine as examples that have to try and pick up the slack for Harley and tell customers what's actually going on. I can attest that it's very hard to get proper information as a consumer and then relay it to my audience. It just shouldn't be that way. If Harley would get out ahead of these things and communicate directly with their customers on the various channels I think things would be very different. Lack of communication and silence by Harley is really frustrating once loyal customers. Sorry if it's been a little negative lately, but at the end of the day, we want Harley to pay attention and make some changes so they continue to exist into the future. We love our Harley's!! Just my two cents and again, thanks for your comments, Matt. 🤘

Ryan Urlacher Agreed. The communication with some of these more technical things is bad. I completely agree too, with your comments about their “over-produced videos” that don’t teach anything. I think the mentality is to educate the dealerships who then will be able to relay the information to their customers. Most front-line employees at shops aren’t trained on this stuff though, and they don’t see the benefit to educate themselves on their own free time. For example, you know more about the infotainment system than 99% of the HD employees out there. Anyways, take care. Thank you for your public service in law-enforcement.

Totally agree with Matt. I’ve owned many Harleys through the years. I’ve never really understood how people can be so passionate about a brand of bike on the one hand, and continually bitch about the MC on the other pretty much all the time. I’ve bought a lot of parts for my bikes both from H-D and aftermarket and for the most part, Harley’s prices are in line with and in a lot of cases cheaper. This notion that you need to buy a genuine Harley bike and then stay as far away from genuine parts and accessories as possible has never made sense to me.

How can that void warranty if cats are in mufflers like the sportsters. I was told by dealership I can change muffs with no effect on warranty. I am having Harley shop remap for that change though. I was told by dealership that going beyond airbox and muffs, to add fuelpack, shows on computer history.

@@mikefisher4557 Yes it did. I have a trike and the rear wheals entrapped all that xtra heat from the cats with no way to get rid of them. I not only replaced the headers but the pipes and mufflers. I retuned with a Fuelpack. It runs very cool now and the rear passenger’s feet don’t get hot. Between the cats and the header cooling fans, the area behind the lower fairings were very hot when the ambient temperature is high. Since then, I added a better cam that gave me high speed rollout which with a trike, even with the 103 , was lacking. Now I have the best of both worlds. I don’t plan to do any more upgrades.

    • @Marcus_from_OZ
      @Marcus_from_OZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

No, end of EPA compliance, if your bike is tested and fails emissions specs you can be defected until the "problem" is fixed, if you drop a valve seat for example, and they can prove that removing the cat caused the engine to run hotter and claim that you caused it, you're screwed. If for example the gearbox fails it would not be caused by the exhaust being modified, so they can't legally void your claim. Of course how much you wish to spend on legal fees is another question but Magnusson-Moss is pretty clear and easy to understand, usually it is enough that they think you have read it.

I've been watching your channel for a few years now and this video has gotten me to subscribe ,you hit the nail right on the head. I recently bought a 2018 heritage Softail. The salesman tried real hard to get me to extend the warranty, it was like he was reading off a script. I told him the only number on that piece of paper I was interested in was the bottom line and the smaller that number the happier I was, he finally caved and said I understand and let it go.im sticking with the 2 years they give. On another note, Harley has more than doubled the price of their service manuals. Like you said, they don't want the average guy working on his own bike. Keep up the good work!

They can’t void your warranty due to aftermarket parts, have you guys ever heard of the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, I know this for a fact because my last Harley blew up under warranty, with Vance and hinds pipes and turner, they said my warranty was void until I brought this up, guess what they fixed it, lol with new engine. They have to physically prove damage was due to the aftermarket parts, in my case there was a machining defect, when they took it apart.

@@jgk9820 At the end of the day it's up to the consumer to hire their own Attorney w/ expensive court battles to follow to fight the dealership's opinion. The Magnusson-Moss warranty act has much language in it. It definitely allows you to do your own oil changes as long as you save your receipts and records. They can't force you to have a dealership do your oil change etc....It rarely happens, because it would cost the consumer more in legal fees than the repair costs. Unfortunate reality.

Bikers worrying about the warranty! LOL I voided the warranty on my 2018 FLHC the day after I bought it. My warranty is ME. Unless you have an exceptional dealer service department, I wouldn't trust them to touch the bike anyway.
Here's the reality with the M8, they are so emissions burdened and run so lean that you are actually limiting the life if you don't modify them. I have 20 degree cooler head temps after a canned FP3 tune here in Florida. Hmm, 2 years running hot and lean? I'll risk voiding that short-term warranty for the long-term benefits.

Another info packed video Ryan! I purchased an 18 Ultra Limited 8 months ago from the local dealership in my city and opted for the extended warranty too. This was my first H-D so, I wanted to protect my investment but, I definitely feel the pinch when I carry it in for a routine service. My thought process is I'll work on what won't void the warranty and have it serviced during promotional specials as needed. What's done is done and the money it'd cost to fight H-D over (Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975) would be a lot more than their labor/parts. Ultimately, it's about developing a relationship with your dealership so, they'll be more willing to work with you if they can.

So I did an extended service plan on a 2012 FLHTP that was retired from the local Sheriffs office. The best money I ever spent. It paid for a rear sprocket, a transmission, a clutch, and several more things that was "excessive" wear prior to me getting the bike. It literally saved me THOUSANDS of dollars. When I bought my new bike, 2019 FLHXS, I bought the service plan again. According to my local bike shop, no a Harley shop, he actually tunes the bike though the factory ECM. With doing so it doesn't trigger Harleys red flag alerts within the system. Not every bike shop does it. So its certainly something to call around and ask about. Now my question would be.... With the warranty void, is it only on the parts that were replaced or upgraded or does it really void the "complete" warranty?

Found this to be a great source of information. I recently bought a stock Yamaha R6 with the standard warranty. The tried to sell me an extended warranty and I declined. Within a month of buying the bike I put in about $2000 in mods myself. Could also be I would have voided the warranty. Now I am in the market for a StreetGlide and this makes so much sense. Thank you!!

Totally agree Ryan, here in the U.K. I bought a 2nd hand 48 1200 with 900 miles on, with V&H short shots and stage 1 air intake with screaming eagle fuel pack. After about 6 months I had call from the Harley dealer saying that it needed a service. They quoted me £330 for oil and filter change. After several calls/ emails/ texts I called them to say that it should have been serviced before I took it. No reply. I bought the oils, filter and spark plugs from an independent dealer for £67 an hour of my time. Done. The Stealership told me the warranty would be void, my argument was that as it was a 2 no hand bike the warranty would only be 3 months. Now have a 2011 dyna street bob and will service it all myself. Love the channel mate.

I have a 2001 FLSTF and have had it since new. I bought a 3 year extended warranty on it but that was a waste of money as nothing ever happened to the bike. I have 65K miles on the bike so yes I do ride it. I'm glad that my bike has a carb as I'm really good at tuning carbs and cleaning them. If I replace the pipes and I have several times over the years I can up or down the main jet as needed hell if I wanted to put an S&S Super E on it I could, probably not because I kinda like the CV carb that it came with. Last Winter I went to replace the cam chain tensioners and notice a bit of wear on the cams so I replaced them with modern tensioners. I also replaced the Transmission seal and the Primary Chain Case tensioners, then I put new white wall Harley Dunlops on it along with a new throttle cable. The crazy things you do during the cleveland winters. I put HD Hard Bags on the bike and now the match the fairing I put on it 10 years ago. I took off the full size tour pack that I had on it and put on bullet LED turn signals and it looks pretty cool now. I roll up and buys are like when did you get the street glide or electra glide. I'm like it's a Fat Boy Einstein, don't the solid wheels give that much away? I think I'll probably just keep this bike forever and just doing whatever I need to to keep it on the road. Maybe next winter I'll do a 6 speed transmission upgrade.

I bought a new 2019 ultra limited a few months ago. They told me about the warranty saying "if you come in with slip ons installed they COULD void the warranty, a full exhaust system they said they would definately void it." I put on a stage 1 with cobra mufflers and a harley air intake and even used their street tuner at home to tune it on my laptop. Then took it in for a 1000 mile service and they didnt say anything to me about the pipes or anything. So I'm not sure if they sent my info to Harley or what. The mechanics said they could also tell if I swapped out the aftermarket for the stock to take it in for service cause the ecm can tell the difference in back pressure. HD=another Hundred Dollars.

In reference to the extended warranty after 60 days. I've had my 2019 CVO Limited for 6 months. I decided to have the dealer install a Stage 4 kit with high flow exhaust system. Being aware of this ridiculous 60 day warranty issue, I asked the dealer, what happens if my motor blows up in a year. At first, they said no problem but they decided look further into it. My Harley dealer at Cowboy Austin called Harley HQ for any way I could get around this issue. It turns out, the only way to get covered for the factory warranty and the 3 year ESP. I had to cancel my current ESP plan, then purchase a new Screaming Eagle plan. So, I cancelled my ESP and bought a new one. It turns out, that the refund from the original warranty was enough to pay for the new on! So now, they are installing my Stage 4 mod with a high flow exhaust system with both low and wide band tuners. Now I am covered for the full 5 years! You might want to followup with Harley to verify it but I feel very confident I am covered. BTW, I love your videos! Ray

I'm with you - I will NEVER buy another HD ESP. Of the 3 Harley touring bikes I've owned, I had the ESP on 2 of them - the first '06, I skipped it on the '13, and I have it on the '15. I've been fortunate that I haven't needed them. So, lots of money for NADA (so far, knock wood). Important to note that their new warranty voiding per the EPA settlement is specific to 2017 and newer ie, the Milwaukee 8 motor. So - no more ESP, no forced Screaming Eagle parts, no forced HD dealership installs. I'm sick of HD and their overpriced bullshit - I have zero desire to buy anything else from them.

Harley said this was not covered under warranty. I realized they were going to use this excuse for everything so I cancelled my extended service plan and got my money back. After I got on to legal services they refunded the money back off the loan plus minus interest out of that $1300. The scums are nothing but rip offs. I got my new bike and don’t deal with low life Harley dealerships again. I fabricate my own accessories now and cost me 20 times cheaper then the dealership and better quality.

HD has a reputation of being a high price project bike. Rumors and released patent filings with diagrams of the M8's replacement are already out there circulating. And with all the new technology out there, you would think HD would bring the weight of their non touring bikes down below 600lbs. It's not necessary and eliminates lots of riders who like lighter bikes. Imagine a 114 in a bike that weighs 500lbs?

Hi Ryan: first of all I really appreciate your knowledge & experience with HD. I may be an outlier here. I am definitely a gray beard who has 30+ years of motorcycle riding experience. However I have been a Honda & BMW man but always wanted a Harley Davidson. Last week I bought a new 2021 Road Glide Limited. I also bought the 5 year extended service plan. I have no interest in wrenching or increasing power so that’s not an issue, at least for me. I just want to ride & take extended road trips with the peace of mind of a extended warranty. That’s why I am probably not typical compared to most riders.
Just really stoked to start riding this spring up here in Ontario Canada 🇨🇦

I grew up around Harleys, but 30 years of owning bikes I just bought my 1st Harley. One of the things I always liked about them was how no 2 were ever the same. People change them in so many ways, this and the M8 is what finally got me on one. I went out bought $2k in V&H parts and now I learn if I throw it all on I will void my warranty. Honestly thinking about cancelling the extended warranty and throwing the parts on anyhow. I am going to talk to the dealer Tuesday and see what they say. I don't mind letting them do the install if I can keep the warranty, but I will be bummed about my fp3 sitting on a shelf. My guess is they run into this a lot. Can they tune for non-Harley parts or are the tunes all premade?

Ryan, I purchased a 5 year ESP when I bought my 2015 FLTRXS; I called H-D customer service regarding my 5 year ESP and was told that the ESP ran current with my factory warranty. So in essence my 5 year ESP was good for only 3 years past my factory warranty and was told that the ESP expired January 2020. After knowing what I know now I would wait to my factory warranty was almost expired before buying an ESP at a much lower rate; I just recently bought another 3 year ESP.
I had to use my ESP on my FLTRXS last year as my transmission developed a class III leak and needed repaired; the cost for that was approximately $1600 and only cost me my $50 deductible; so the ESP almost paid for itself. Enjoying the content of your videos.

This violets the vary principles that this American brand (I'm Canadian, and sadden by the changes) was founded upon to which you eluded to, that being able to customize it the way YOU want it!!!!!!!! Fast forward to 2019 and people are still experiencing it. See HD Forums. If they want to force us to buy SE parts then how about you consider the cost of these parts when you offer us a trade in value? I didn’t think so. It happened to me. My local dealership, where I bought my 2017 FLHXS, knew I had a "non-compliant tuner" (the official language in the EPA ruling and the ONLY thing the EPA demands they void the warranty over) and they were cool with it. I had a couple of minor issues that were fixed under warranty, including a couple of tires and one wheel. In Sturgis last year, my stator went out. I was able to get it in to Black Hills HD right away and they got it fixed relatively quickly. But they charged me $750 because of my "non-compliant tuner." Any tuner that is not CARB certified is non-compliant - interesting because CARB is a California state agency. There are only two tuners that meet that criteria - HD's and the California version of the FP3 - my FP3 was the 49-state version because it is not hamstrung like the CARB tuners are. I have a Pro-pipe and a HD heavy breather, too, but they did not void over the pipe. In fact, the factory reps were there and told me they did not care about pipes. I blasted those reps for three solid days until the finally agreed to refund my money - but they would not unflag my VIN - my warranty was still voided. As soon as I got home, I sold back my 5-year ESP - it was worthless.
The problem with the EPA ruling AND HD policy (and I agree that the MoCo "conspired" with the EPA to get this ruling) is that it is in direct conflict with the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act of 1975. The law was established because manufacturers were voiding warranties for the most frivolous of reasons. If your transmission went out and you had an aftermarket radio - void. Aftermarket tuners - according to the EPA ruling and embraced by HD - void the entire powertrain part of the warranty. Magnuson-Moss requires that the manufacturer prove the aftermarket part CAUSED the failure, otherwise the warranty MUST be honored. My stator did not go bad because I have a FP3 - the reps even agreed that it could not have been the cause - but because the EPA ruling requires HD to basically break the law, they go along with it. It is beneficial to them in a big way. If the factory really valued its customers, they would have fought the EPA on those grounds - that the ruling violates the law. And the dealers - the ones who aren't in bed with the factory like Black Hills HD is - are scared. I will NEVER by a brand new Harley again. I will be sure that my money, whenever possible, goes to the dealer, the aftermarket - anywhere but into a manufacturer's pocket that doesn't give two shits about me. I was so pissed I almost bought an Indian. When it comes time for my next bike, I still might. Their warranty is not worth the paper it's written on.

Following the M/M Warranty Act, it sounds like it’s time for Harley owners to confront the EPA with a Class Action lawsuit.
I’m an Amsoil dealer of over 20 years now and have had the Warranty Act convo with several dealers that were completely clueless about it and acting on the training they had received from the companies they sell for.
It’s sad how corporations put their own dealers on the hook for this kind of thing.

All motorcycle manufacturers are being forced to deny warranty on "off road use only" modified bikes. Once you heavily modify your exhaust, software, cams and other things to non EPA compliance, you are admitting you race, which voids your warranty.
Basically the EPA has told Harley(and others) that they are allowing those "illegal modifications" if they honor the warranty in those cases.

I know my friend , I bought a brand new SPG and asked the dealer what they recommended for the V& H exhaust I wanted, they advised the FP3, Now my bike is using a lot of oil, all the parts were fitted by the dealer before I got my bike, The dealer says HD wont cover or even look at the problem because I have non HD parts that could have caused the problem. I have used all my life saving to buy a brand new HD and this is what I get. Im in the UK so no regulations here. Might be a Dealer problem but how do I know ?im only a customer.

Hi there I have a 17 Limited I had the dealer do the SE big bore kit stage 3 and I also got the ESP. I wanted to make sure I was covered . I've owned 6 other Harley's this is my first new one. I have 21K on it just used Esp for the first time it was worth it to me $50 deductable was a lot easier to pay than a $300 dollar repair. I had a 08 classic with a esp on it used it 5 times but the problem was when there was a failure that took out a SE part the coverage would only give you the OEM part I paid the difference to put the SE camshafts back in. That is why I went with the SE upgrade right from the get go. I have very respectable power. The stock 107 was a dog compaired to my old bike, now it out performs my old bike. Really part of what it boils down to is if you don't want an ESP That at the end of 2 years your out of warranty any way. Also I would like to say you are doing a great job you have a lot of great content keep it up

Hi Ryan I very much enjoyed this Video.... when I saw Matt review the new Harley Softail frame design here on TH-cam, I was all in... I had visited my local dealer and was ready to buy a new Fat Boy, they only had the 107 in stock and I wanted a 114... I decided to wait. Then, here on TH-cam. I saw Harley had given 10 millionaires new Harley bikes for free, and they were not even riders.... I was so angry to see one of those chosen, take a rattle can and spray his new bike flat black end too end. I thought, " I will get my Harley paying for it in full retail and they see fit to give one to a jackass who had never even been in a Harley shop ! " I bought a Indian Chieftain, Harley can keep their bikes, never plan to go in their shops again....

I bought a 1200 Sporster new in 1990 from a dealer in Ontario Canada. I only had 4300 Kms by the fourth year of ownership when the lower cylinder gaskets blew. I was lucky enough that Harley decided to honour warranty due to low mileage but then I got notified that due to having "racing" heads were on it they weren't going to cover. After I pushed that there had been no modifications to the engine they finally found that there were 500 sets of experimental performance heads that had been installed at the factory and they honoured the job. Problem was that the cylinder studs were still too weak and they they stretched at the 8000km mark. I rebuilt myself using S&S studs and they held up until I sold the bike in 2010.

I have a problem with this because in a sense it violates the right to repair bill. There is a point that I could understand like heads, cams, etc. But exhaust, air filters including mapping is okay. Congress revamped the right to repair bill because of things exactly like this. John Deere did the same thing with farmers.

Hey Ryan....very interesting video and info bout warranties. I purchased a new 21 Tri-glide and they (dealership) charged me for the extended warranty without my consent. Found out when they explained all figures on bill of sale. At that point I questioned the charge. So they did not want to re-do paper work...guess they figured I'd give in. Nope...I said I could request a refund. Bottom line after 2 months I did get a refund. They are pretty slick !

I bought the 5 year extended, upgraded to stage III, SE pipes, radio upgrades + other items to my 2018 RGU. sounds good and have the piece on mind. have 2011 FLHTK no warranty issues have both. did extended since all is covered for 7 years most out of pocket $50 bucks. But I agree with you on the tuner and pipe restrictions but SE pipes do sound good with stage III. hopefully I made the correct decision but so far love the 18 RGU.

Not completely accurate. As stated in the video, if within the first 60 days of your new Harley purchase
you purchase HD Screaming Eagle parts, yes even stage 3, 4 etc, and have the dealership mechanics install them, it is as if the bike was manufactured that way and the parts and labor are covered for the life of the ESP. After the 60 day window, it's different as stated in the video.

Yeah, I'm not a hater on HD, but the way these sales pitches seem to become conventional wisdom in the HD crowd is incredible. Some of Matt Laidlaw's points seem good on the surface, but the simple fact is that people are being told that all aftermarket parts void their warranty/esp when the EPA only demanded aftermarket tuners meet standards. And, the reason the decision came about was HD's malfeasance in selling these parts themselves as an end run around regulations on them as a manufacturer. If they hadn't been doing that, individuals would still have the ability to choose their own tuners without voiding their warranties.
HD makes an arguably fine product, but they have also earned every bit of their business side troubles.
