  • Jambo the Gorilla shot to international fame in 1986 when a five-year-old boy fell into the gorilla enclosure at the Jersey Zoo and lost consciousness. Jambo stood guard over the boy while he was unconscious, placing himself between the boy and other gorillas.
    bit.ly/2ykEYHf
He later stroked the unconscious boy. When the boy regained consciousness and started to cry, Jambo and the other gorillas retreated, and an ambulance man and two keepers rescued the boy.
This film tells us the full story of the Jersey Zoo gorilla family, including dramatic pictures of Jambo guarding the boy and how he was rescued.

Your out of your mind if you think this is true. People think animals are friendly because you see cases of this from time to time, an animal helping a human. Go spend some time walking around, minding your own business, in any area that has “supposedly dangerous animals” and see how long you last. If a wild gorilla feels threatened it will kill you. They don’t even eat meat and they will kill you. This captive gorilla has a bunch of ladies and babies and all the food he could ever want. Why would he hurt a tiny lifeless child that in no way could hurt him? Why do wild gorillas interact with humans in the wild without ripping them apart? It’s because they are King Shit of Turd Mountain.

    • @shawn6970

Jason Blaha Are you kidding? Many wild animals do not kill for fun. Either to sharpen their skills or for sustenance. Nature is hardly personal, everything’s just doing what they think they gotta do to survive. However, that’s not to say nature is as friendly folks make it out to be. Part of the reason people like nature so much is because we cleared out most of the dangerous animals that’d take pleasure tearing us a new asshole which why people can enjoy those hiking and skiing trips.

jessie james Unfortunately, he was putting the boy in danger, whether he meant to or not.
I doubt he had any intention of hurting the child (it would have been over real quick if he had), but he didn't know his own strength. He was also defensive and getting agitated by the crowd screaming at him, which is why he dragged the kid around, and why it ended that way.
In this video, the crowd is much quieter, so Jambo was calm. It would have taken too long to sedate Harambe, and also may have agitated him even more.

jessie james He most certainly was not "protecting" the boy as Jambo was. He could clearly be seen dragging the child throughout the enclosure and the zookeepers were worried it could have led to serious injuries. Whether or not Harambe would have significantly injured the child or posed a serious risk is hypothetical, but the chance could not be taken.

While Jambo is good ambassador for his species, to credit this event with dispelling gorilla myths is to completely ignore the amazing work of Dian Fossey decades prior with gorillas in their natural habitat.

Peace loving gorillas are not a threat unless you are attacking thier harem or child. They don't eat meat they just graze all day and want to be kept alone.

I don't think the gorilla particularly cared about the boy, but was rather trying to ensure the safety of his troop in this unprecedented situation. A human falling into his habitat was clearly something he hadn't experienced and thus he wanted the rest of his troop to keep their distance. At the same time he was also clearly curious as gorillas tend to be interested in humans.

I think it goes both ways, We will never know Jambo's real reason of doing it, but I think he knew the kid was small and helpless, and he wanted to make sure it was ok but also being cautious like you said.

  • @johnmacauley6391

They don't like to make direct eye contact for long, unlike a lion who's stairs down its prey before it attack's. Totally different behavior.
