      yes in terms of narrative. under the shadow of his master morgoth he is not the biggest deal. and morgoth´s shadow is large. however. he was i think physically stronger, a nearly unstopable shapeshifter. Huan the hound is so badass. if he attacked Morgoth when he was buisy fighting fingolfin the dark lord would have some major hadacke. i think Huan is a bigger deal than both gil galad and elendil together. not to mention when Sauron opened his guard after Luthien spell and Huan had the chance to attack beside being ( scared ). i think this video should had enphasised it. Sauron was possibly at his maximun by the time of this events i think. but just as morgoth paradoxically increased his hypnotic influence much more later than before, i understand a relatively physically weaker Sauron having much more potent hypnotic long distance influence later. and after the last alliance... thats when his paralels with Morgoth get really visible. you agree ?

    "I never called Edith Lúthien - but she was the source of the story that in time became the chief part of the Silmarillion. It was first conceived in a small woodland glade filled with hemlocks at Roos in Yorkshire (where I was for a brief time in command of an outpost of the Humber Garrison in 1917, and she was able to live with me for a while). In those days her hair was raven, her skin clear, her eyes brighter than you have seen them, and she could sing - and dance. But the story has gone crooked, and I am left, and I can't plead before the inexorable Mandos."

    Beren's response to Thingol's request for a Silmaril is one of my favorite parts of the entire series. "For little price do Elven-kings sell their daughters: for gems, and things made by craft." It really puts the entirety of the story into perspective. The oath, the 3 Elven kin-slayings and even Gimli's encounter with Galadriel. The world is ruled by greed for material things of little importance but the most valuable things are family and friends.

    • @Caledoniadream
      @Caledoniadream ปีที่แล้ว +21

      You're right. But I suppose it wasn't only the Silmarill he wanted to have but also Beren's death. It is quite a common plot in (at least) european mythologies when an "ordinary" man and a princess fall in love and the king father has no intention to bless them. So he gives the man an impossible task or a mission which technically means "get lost and never come back".

      I agree this is the most available storyline of the Silmarilion, and honestly i think you would need about three movies, the first goes up to when Beren meets Luthien, the second is the struggle up until they reach Angband, and the Third would be the up until they are reincarnated and reunited, leaving the "aftermath" since it is more bitter sweet, and also less fleshed out of the whole storyline.

The Tale is actually quite long but since Tolkien never novelized it, there isn't much in the way of connective tissue between the events and precious little dialogue to adapt. Doesn’t it drive you a little bit crazy in the Fellowship movie when Frodo asks about Luthien when Aragorn is singing about her, and his response to Frodo’s question of “What happened to her?” is just “She died”? Thousands of elves “died”-she basically gave up the immortality of her spirit to be with Beren. Instead of going back to the halls of Mandos and eventually living again, her spirit was doomed to go to the unknown place where men’s spirits go. You can really feel the weight of this decision when you read Melian her mother’s reaction when she meets Luthien again after she returns from Valinor. Loved the video, thanks!

      well no, elves don't die, they lose their body for a time, but their spirit are linked to the fate of world, and are stuck there.
      Luthien, is the only elf in existence, to have actually died, and thus leave the world, along with all man.
      Many other elves envy the gift of man, but they can't choose to die. Luthien was given a second life, and the fate of man, by Eru Illuvatar.

    Luthien singing to Mandos and Mandos allowing them to return to Middle-Earth is likely (I'd say most likely, but I haven't ever seen it explicitly attributed) drawn from a Middle-English adaptation of the Greek myth of Orpheus. In this Middle-English version, Sir/King Orfeo goes to the fairy king to reclaim his lost wife (abduction by fairies in Celtic/English folklore is very similar to death). He played for the fairy court and was granted one wish, which of course he used to take his wife back. But for some reason (it's a long poem and I haven't read it in a while) they're not allowed to go back to Orfeo's old kingdom, so instead they set up on an island in a river and may or may not still be living there. Tolkien basically gender-swapped who rescued whom (classic Respect Women Juice Tolkien) and kept the rest of the plot the same. More fun bits about that poem and Tolkien's connection to it: there were only a handful of extant manuscripts of it, but because Tolkien is the world's biggest language nerd he decided that none of them were the correct original dialect, so he took these different translations and whipped up a new one in the correct 400- to 800-year-old dead language while keeping meter, rhyme, tone, and everything else that makes it a poem. And later he decided to translate it to modern English.

Edith is a Half Angel/Half-Elf who took on two dark lords, while I am on a quest to make sure I can marry her, by getting this Jewel." And It's so cute, Tolkien put himself and Edith in his works!!!
    Currently, I am single, But this is a relationship, I will love to have. And whenever I reread it, I love it. Tolkien, I feel is one of the few authors I read, who doesn't write strange *Cringe related* love stories, (or if out of nowhere) No Tolkien writes love stories based on experience, and it really has that personal touch!!!

    Just wanna say thank for doing this. Its been a few years since Ive read “The Hobbit”, “LOTR”, & “The Silmarillion”. Your videos help fill in some gaps.
