The first story reminded me of neighbours we had years and years ago. An older couple. They had a huge garden and we had apple trees and a large pumpkin patch. She brought over a basket of fresh picked veggies and asked if I wanted them as "we have far too much for the two of us". Stuff like lettuce and other things that are eaten fresh rather than put up for the winter. I said sure and thanked her. The next day she was back at my door asking for money "per pound" of the veggies she brought over the day before. I must have stood there long enough for her to clue in that I didn't realize she wanted money and she said she'd "come back later". I eventually took her the $5 she was asking for. Flash forward to September when the apples and pumpkins are ready. She showed up with boxes asking if she could get some. I said sure. As soon as I saw her with 3 full boxes of apples and 5 pumpkins, I went out there with the weigh scale and said "That would be xx per pound. I'm giving you a dollar off per pound because you picked them yourself." She walked off with NO apples or pumpkins, astonished that I was "so unneighbourly". If she made a living selling her produce, I would have had no issue with paying. If she told me right off the bat that it was xxx per pound, I would have had no problem with paying. But she came across as "Here is some vegetables for you because we're neighbours." Fair game when it comes to the apples and pumpkins, right? The next year? She kept us in lettuce, cucumbers, green onions all summer long - for free - and when the apples and pumpkins were ready? I took her around 60 lbs of apples along with several pumpkins. So she did figure it out and we had a great relationship until we moved.

I can somewhat relate to the mechanic story. Several years ago there was a recall of a faulty part in my car. The replacement of the part could only be made by a local dealer in our city or a car dealer in the neighboring city. I schedule an appointment with the dealer in our city and go in to have the replacement installed. I was told it would take about 20 minutes. An hour later I went to the desk to see what the holdup was. They bring me to my car and have several sheets of paper evidencing problems with my car, and they can fix these things for $1200. So in their presence I phone our regular mechanic and tell him about the recalled part replacement and started reading him the pages of problems and action required to get each particular item repaired or replaced. He told me that there was nothing wrong with anything concerning my car and he asked to speak to the guy making the $1200 repairs and proceeded to rip him a new one. I went home after getting my phone back from the guy.

I took my car in to have the AC regassed and the mechanic told me that I needed a new air filter to help the AC work better. That would have been fair enough if both the cabin and engine air filters hadn’t been changed 2 or 3 weeks prior and he didn’t show me a dirty engine air filter that wasn’t from my car, I have a K & N air filter on my car and it has a sticker that says it’s washable, reusable and looks quite distinctive. I presume he thought I would have no idea of the difference between cabin and engine air filters and used whatever he had lying around to try conning me. Thankfully I had photo proof that it wasn’t my air filter and know that it’s the cabin air filter, not the engine air filter, that keeps dust, pollen etc from circulating through the heating/cooling system.

I have a couple mechanic stories.
      1. Took my Camry in to have the oil changed and they claimed that I had leaks in my power steering pump and some other stuff which made my car too dangerous to drive, and they couldn't let me leave without doing repairs. Well it's illegal for them to do that. I called a friend who was a police officer and he came in to "explain" the law to them. I got my oil change and left. (There wasn't anything wrong with my car)
      2. I needed to get a recall part repaired on my car. Well the service agent was more concerned with looking down my shirt and stroking my arm than actually getting everything ready for the repair. I was getting extremely angry, as was my boyfriend with this guy. I was 20 and I'm petite and this guy was in his 50's, towering over me and LITERALLY stroking my arm and telling me "don't worry your pretty little head, I'll take care of you ". 🤢. I stormed into the service area demanding a manager. The manager 'wasn't available ' so I went into the sales area, where there was a bunch of people and made a scene about their employee sexually harassing me (it was actually assault but whatever) and that I want to speak to a manager now!! The manager came out and I told him what happened, and that I want that man removed from floor until he learns some manners, and off my account/file permanently. I hate that man!!
      3. I went to buy a car, cash only when I was 17. The dealership showed me a 1993 mercury grand marquis ( this was in 2004) saying that he got a deal from the manager where he got it to $6,000. I asked him if he was sure. He kept saying it was a great deal. I then told him, well both NADA and Kelly blue book say this car is worth $600. The look on his face!! He did not expect me to know about either of those! Lol not to mention another car had tapping in the engine, badly. I pulled the dipstick and the oil smelled very clearly burnt. I told the sales guy, but he was adamant that it just needed an oil change. No, that engine got damaged; an oil change won't help it now. 🙄
Apparently it's shocking when a younger petite women knows anything about cars. I'm definitely not an expert, but I do know a little bit and I get weird reactions sometimes when I speak up about something.

Story 2, I totally get how she was treated. I am a 60yr old female, 5ft even, so yeah I am “ the little old lady” I had been having issues with my breaks, pedal to the floor kinda issues. I KNEW I needed a new master cylinder and I also knew that there are 2 ways to bleed the master cylinder. 1 is bench bleeding( filling it with brake fluid and bleeding out the air) and 2. Putting it on the vehicle, fill it, and then bleed it. The second way takes 2 people. One to pump the breaks and hold pressure while the other opens a valve to let air out. So I took it to the dealer and told them, I need a new master cylinder. This guy gave me a “you poor female” look and said, let us look at it, we will let you know. So I left, they gave me a loaner vehicle, and was to come back the next day. When I went back in, the young man asked me why I thought I needed a master cylinder. I told him my pedal goes almost straight to the floor. He looked at me, with a straight face and said, “ You need new calipers on the back. Whoever put those on, put them on backwards, and instead of it giving resistance when I hit the brakes it now pulls the pedal to the floor. I looked at him, blinked a few times then I told him, “DoI look like an idiot? Those calipers CAN NOT be put in backwards, they only fit in there one way. I do not need calipers, I told you I needed a master cylinder, however, do not start with ANYTHING on my car, I will just take it somewhere else, before you try to tell me I am low on blinker fluid” his face got really red, and I walked off, waiting for my keys.

About the story about the mechanic, I was a mechanic for 20+ years so I know my stuff. I lived in Nevada for a while and needed to get my car emissions tested so I took it to the shop. When the guy came out he told me that I failed. Problem was I knew what he did. He disconnected the battery which resets the computer so of course the car runs rough and will fail. I promptly called enforcement and reported them. Within two weeks they were closed

Was always mechanically inclined but by the automotive standards had left me in the dirt. Forget if this happened during our just friends stage, dating or early marriage but my late wife and I were out and about running some errands and part of those errands was to get an oil change on my car. Of course mechanic comes in all breathless telling me he cannot let me leave the shop with my car in that condition and proceeds to list 3k worth of needed repairs. Tell him I'd like him to close up my car and I'll get a couple of other options on the needed repairs. Mechanic then tells me he can't legally give me my keys with my car in it's present condition. At that moment my wife steps in and asks to see the list of horribles and after a bit of patronizing she got the dude you really don't want to F with me tone to her voice and I just stood back with a may God have mercy on your soul because she won't look and wished I had some popcorn.
You see my wife was the youngest of 7 siblings 3 of those 7 were mechanics so considering she brought her own tools and car ramps into the relationship and had no issues with popping a hood and getting grease under her nails she made quick work of his list of very expensive repairs and when she finished I stepped up and told him he would be giving me my car and keys back NOW or maybe he'd like to discuss grand theft auto with local law enforcement instead. I did have one of her brothers give the car the once over and certified the car was in perfect working order so with the copy of the estimated repairs my vehicle needed, her brother's inspection and mine and here's testimony to events and the threat of vehicle confiscation until we agreed to repairs an auto repair chain of of several shops in our region that advertised in the Sunday color section ended up going out of business. Can't speak for their other locations but the one that pulled that crap on me has been a kitchen cabinet showroom for the last 28 or so years.

I had a mechanic try to scam me on an older Chevette once. It just needed brakes. Me and my friend were able to do the work, but it would take the entire weekend, and if it wasn't too expensive we were going to have someone do it to save time. I just wanted a quote. I watched them as they pulled it in, they poured 10W-40 motor oil on my rear differential and told me the axle seal was leaking and the car would need a new rear end. My friend didn't see it. Needless to say, I took the car back immediately and we did the brakes ourselves.

The best was when I was in high school. One of the librarians had an issue with her car. She'd taken it to the mechanic several times and, even after paying them far too much money, the issue never seemed to be fixed or something else went wrong. I told her to take her two small kids and some other young kids. Give them permission to be brats while there. Turn them loose in the waiting room and wait for the car to be done. She was skeptical but did it. Car was "fixed" for no cost and never had another problem. She switched mechanics.

I have a fun story about dealership shenanigans as well. I work during the day and my AC was having problems. I have a Jeep dealership like 5 minutes from me so I scheduled an appointment and asked my old man to drop it off for me.
There were a few things wrong with it (auto start/stop not working, AC, etc) so I put in for all of it to get checked because it was still under warranty. They quoted 4 days to take a look at/fix issues. I was out of town for work that week as well, so I got updates from my old man that they literally hadn't heard jack from them until late Friday, when I was on my way home. I got home to my car being in its usual spot and asked if everything was fixed. Apparently not. They had to order new parts for the AC issue so it would take a while.
Fast forward a month. Yes, a whole freaking month to get a part. Not their fault with shortages and whatever, but still annoying. Took the car in, again they said it was going to be 4 days. Gave us a loaner for 4 days. My old man was initially told that there were 7 cars ahead of ours. The next day, they called with an "update" and said they hadn't even started and now the total number of cars ahead of us was 10. Then it was literally radio silence for a week. The loaner was dropped off and we didn't have a car (my old man uses my car because his tags are expired and he needs to get a little work done to get them current). After that week of radio silence, they text an update that they were working on it and it would be ready by Thurs. My mom was done playing their games and called the GM of the dealership and said it was BS that we were told 4 days and it had already been over a week and a half. She asked how the hell 3 additional cars were suddenly in front of us after they told us there were 7 initially and then it went up to 10.
So they admitted that they service and check vehicles that just get delivered off the truck before they do warranty work. By the end of the first week, my parents were both pissed and rented a car just to have one to use for things like grocery shopping/outings. So once again, it was delayed. And then delayed again. We finally got my car back 17 days after we took it in. After being lied to and yelled at. They apparently "couldn't find" the loaner car that was left at their own f--king dealership for "days" so they assumed we still had it. Then when they found it, they blamed US saying it wasn't "easy to find" even though my old man said he left it right where they gave it to him.
Never going to that place again. Ever. I left a 1 star review on Google and the owner responded with "contact the GM and we'll make this right." Yea the f--k right. He was one of the people who was causing problems, like hell he would try to make anything right. After browsing the Google reviews, I find out that while the car selling service there may be amazing, the repair/shop service absolutely blows. There are TONS of 1 star reviews about them all being assholes.

I didn't let them do the brakes. Instead, I took it to my regular mechanic for some long overdue maintenance and asked them to check the brakes. There was nothing wrong with them.
I have gotten a lot of firewood out of the woods next to me. But, there's a difference. I not only have the owners permission, I'm also only taking dead trees.

The father is the Karen in that story. It's amazing to me how there's so many people in the comments section who are totally on the father's side. It's also amazing to me how when you tell the story from the perspective of the Karen (As The Hero), people all of a sudden take the Karen side.
It makes me sad to see anybody defending the father's actions & defending the father teaching the kid this lesson, raising another Karen into the world.

It's not just mechanics. It goes for anyone who has knowledge of something that other people don't. There's a level of trust required for society to work when you're incapable of doing everything yourself. AC repairs, PC building, contracting jobs, anything where you can say "this thing is wrong" and the other person doesn't know enough about the subject to dispute it is ripe for scamming.

I don't invite habitually late friends or family to events where time is a factor. When they ask why they were not invited I tell them truthfully. They think they are retaliating by then not inviting me to their events (of any type) - but the joke is on them because part of my goal was that they stop inviting me to their events. As you may already well know, people who are late for events they have been invited to usually don't start their own events on time either. Nothing worse than sitting around still waiting for the hosts to pick up and serve the food and drinks at 6:30 pm for a party that was supposed to start at 4:30 pm (and yes, this had actually happened many times - so much in fact that my family and I would make sure to eat before going to certain parties).

Story 5: Ehh. I don't think the response to the friend was quite equitable. Making you late for a birthday party was a crap thing to do, yeah. But the retaliation was a bit more than just an "inconvenience". If you'd offered to take her out for dinner and then made her wait an hour before you came, or something similar, that would've been appropriate. Involving money just escalated it.

I’ve got a story about mechanics. My husband owned his own mechanic shop and was very well know for his honesty. His mechanics were reliable..Our daughter worked for her dad as his bookkeeper, and the guys decided she needed to learn some basics about fixing cars. Checking oil, air filter, brakes and even changing her own flats. NOW my daughter decided she wanted to get a newer car so she went to a used car dealership and found a car she liked. She told the mechanic she wanted to take it to her mechanic to have them check it out. The salesman said yes but he would have to go with her. So the car comes the shop and up on the lift goes the, there were 3 mechanics plus her daddy looking this car over. These guys checked this car from bumper to bumper. The whole time this salesman was waiting in the showroom, he could see what they were doing, they said he was so nervous every time they found something wrong. Needless to say the car was condemned the salesman got a tongue lashing from ALL of the mechanics. Saying things like how dare you say this car is in good working order.
NOTE the salesman didn’t know this shop was owned by her dad nor did he know that one of the mechanics was her BIG BROTHER.
THAT SALESMAN WAS MORE THAN HAPPY TO GET OUT OF THE SHOP.

That last story, the revenge feels a bit overkill. I hate being late, but there are very few instances where being late leads to the same sort of humiliation and difficulty that comes from not having enough $ to pay your bill at a restaurant. Also, OP stated that they knew this person was always late. If they knew it would be a problem, why agree to drive the friend in the first place? A better "revenge" is just to be firm about when you're leaving. Its 5:30pm, where are you? You haven't even left yet? Best find your own ride then; I'm heading out.
On that first story, I don't think that being a bad host justifies theft. The Uncle didn't learn anything from it, and I'm pretty sure revealing who took the peaches wouldn't have made the uncle change his ways. If anything, it would have just made him demand compensation and be even less pleasant to deal with.

I always start my conversation with mechanics by saying (truthfully) "I normally do my own mechanic work, but I just done have the time for this particular project". And then I proceed to tell them all the work I've done. And I watch their face to see if they are a 'kindred spirit' or if they get annoyed that they can't get away with anything with me.
The best is when I needed a new tailshaft installed and I mentioned that over the last two years I've been fixing up my beater work van and I had replaced the rear differential, front differential, front axles, carrier bearings, wheel bearings, brake calipers, rotors, brake lines, starter, fuel pump and fuel lines, A/C delete, upgraded rear springs and shocks, upgraded front shocks, and a list of little things. I really enjoy working on my own vehicle. The mechanic looked me in the eye and goes "so what you're telling me is nobody is going to fool you by claiming you need work that you don't need? Oh and...do you want a job?" It was great 😁
He's a great mechanic and he always tries to do me right but also when he gets really busy he asks me to do my own maintenance so he can take care of his other customers. "When I get too many jobs, you're the only person I can ask to do it yourself that won't take it as being rude." We get along great.

I stopped taking my car to the Kia dealership I bought my car from. I would take it in for a simple oil change and tire rotation and it never failed one of the workers would come to me with a list of things that needed to be done that ranged from $1500.00 to $2000.00. The man would sit there with this expectant look on his face that I would panic and tell him to have it all done. It never worked for him. Finally the last time I took it in and yet another dude came with yet another list, I told him I brought my car in for a couple specific things and that was ALL I wanted done. I don't know how they think the average person would have a spare 2K just laying around. Oh, and those things I was told was in dire need of being replaced are still working perfectly. I now take my car to a very reliable mechanic that's actually honest. I really think the people that work in the service department at Kia got a commission off of every customer they cheated.

Yeah, I thought the same thing, I rarely come into the comment section. However I really wanted to see if anybody was talking about story #1 in the context of the father being the Karen.
The Uncle may have been stingy, but those sodas were the Uncle's property & his inventory that he was selling. The father felt entitled to a free soda (On Behalf Of His Son) from the Uncle & felt so entitled that he trespassed & stole from the Uncle.
The father is the Karen in that story. It's amazing to me how there's some people in the comments section who are totally on the father's side. It's also amazing to me how when you tell the story from the perspective of the Karen, people all of a sudden take the Karen side.
It makes me sad to see anybody defending the father's actions & defending the father teaching the kid this lesson, raising another Karen into the world.
It shows me that a lot of people who tend to be on the Karen hate train are simply Karen's themselves if given the right scenario.

One girl and one guy. The girls issue to being late is that she is never happy with clothes, what handbag to use, make-up, all that shit. We all know this. So what we started doing was that we left without her and she could take the bus after us. Worked very well.
She has many other very good qualities so we actually did think it was quirky and nice. That is actually what I would have suggested to op in that story. If you are late, I am leaving. Get there yourself. Not my problem you are bad a planing time.
While the male friend, that is a competely different story. Changes plans, can't decide what to do, always trying to find an excuse to with very short notice to change plans. Either he is joining or not joining. We never know until it is less than 1hour before anything happens. It does not matter if it is a trip, a cruise, going out for a beer, anything.

The air filter scam is common enough and I've seen mechanics pull that, use a hose to blow off some of the dirt, and put it back into place. The oil change guy gets a bonus when he finds something wrong, so they always check the filter every change (though not needed except every 25K miles). Worse, on my car, it's easy to dump debris from the outside of the filter into the clean side... sucking all those bits of dirt and straw thru the turbo and into the engine, if you aren't careful. When I saw they oil change guy had done this, I had a red/white sign made saying "do not open this filter" and bonded plastic caps over the filter access screws. On the next oil change they still removed the filter, possibly dumping more debris into the engine.

Took my mountain bike in to a major west coast based outdoor retailer for a tune up , they were super busy so when I dropped it off they could only do an acceptance inspection. The female tech told me I needed my derailleur replaced and I authorized it. The guy who actually did the work decided he could save me some money or else was just lazy , adjusted it and calls me to tell me it was ready tells me that it didn’t need to be replaced , me not knowing better took his word and three weeks later the derailleur failed catastrophically destroying the chain and the front gear set costing me much more than just the derailleur and associated labor.
