EXTREMELY Corroded Copper Tea Kettle - Perfect Restoration

- ABOUT THE COPPER TEA KETTLE
In this video I will be restoring a copper tea kettle that has been sitting in a barn with a leaky roof longer than I've been alive. I bought this kettle at an estate sale in eastern Idaho, I was immediately awestruck at the thick crystalline green patina it developed. The previous owner was in her late 80's and had unfortunately just passed from covid-19. Her family was selling all of her possession's and that's how I was able to stumble across this beautiful forgotten treasure. I offered her family $10 for it and took it back home with me.
After doing some research on the internet I was able to find out that this tea kettle was manufactured by a company called "Baker Hart & Stuart" who made copper and porcelain cookware and went out of business in the early 1980s.
ABOUT THE RESTORATION
This was my first official restoration ever. The disassembly went along pretty
smoothly, until I noticed exactly how bad the condition of this kettle actually was. The rust pits were a real challenge to sand down, it took over two days to get it perfectly smooth. There were also way more dents and dings than I could see with the patina still attached. After I sand blasted the nuts that hold the handle on I realized that I had to learn how to copper plate quick haha. Overall I'm really proud of the way this restoration turned out considering its initial state. I hope that you and all of the people who watched were entertained. The colours of the corrosion look nice from a distance but up close it looks mouldy af. I found it very satisfying to watch this restoration, which is handy as that's why I came here 😄

So I just discovered I was wrong. Rescue and Restore may even top My Mechanics. Check out the candy roller he restored - amazing!!
I recommend getting yourself an old trailer hitch ball and polish it up. They make for good anvils to reshape rounded things just like this teapot. Best thing is, they fit inside the teapot if you have the right vice or mounting jig! We use these in metalsmithing to form rounded surfaces (and sometimes teapots too!) edit: another method you can use is to mount a hammer into the vice and use that as your inside "anvil" surface, and then use your mallet on the outside to tap it gently. The key is to keep the material (teapot wall in this case) in between both hammer surfaces.

You don't hammer on the dolly hammer just off it
... you stretch the metal directly hammering in and ditch the hitch ball go get autobody hammer and dolly set . Many great videos on here on how it works

If this was not a labor of love, then I do not know what is! Your patience is two fold - first, your attention to every detail of the restoration process and second, your attention to detail with regard to the video process. Such clean shots, excellent close-ups, very helpful descriptions. Well done, sir! If the original coppersmith were to see what you've done I'm sure he'd shed a tear of gratitude!
I cannot get over how magical sandblasting is! Like the piece is shedding it's aged shell to reveal something like new 💙
I used to do sandblasting for a living. Depending on the fineness of the sand it does remove a fair bit of the material. And if there is a hole in your glove and the sand hits your finger, stings like a bastard. :)

@@capers72424 Yes it does, it leaves a less smooth surface, and wears through your gloves a lot quicker as well. :)

And I think it's Dutch. My mom has a few of these, all inherited from my grandmother.
The handle and knob also make it look Dutch.

I also thought it was Dutch. The people who threw it away were really stupid.

When it said "perfect", after hammering the handle back into shape, and it was LITERALLY perfect, I was like 🤩🤩🤩
While I loved the color of that patina, this kettle was still in good enough condition to be restored and put back into use. Thank you very much for giving it another life!

It isn't until you see a video like this that you can come to appreciate just how much work was needed to make something as humble as a kettle in the olden days. In the modern age of mass production and throwing out of sound but old and obsolete items, we've forgotten that often times, something like that kettle might have been a treasured family heirloom and passed down the generations from mother to daughter. And it sheds light on why so many old kitchens hadracks that bright shiny copper pots and pans would hang from!

I would have been hesitant to sandblast soft copper but I have to admit this restoration came out beautifully. Thanks for restoring such a lovely kettle.
You can use a multitude of different mediums with a sandblaster depending on how delicate the piece is. Glass bead medium is ideal for things like copper because the round shape prevents damaging softer surfaces and it also puts a decent shine on the surface minimizing the polishing you have to do later. If you have something extremely delicate, ground walnut shell or corn cob medium is the way to go.

Scrubbing with a plastic bristle brush and a salt and vinegar paste could have worked too, even without metal brushing the oxide off first. But there's no denying that this came out looking beautiful and it seemed the copper was thick enough to withstand the sanding of high spots without developing holes.
Typically the insides of copper kettles are tin plated/clad to avert excessive amounts of copper getting into the water. This would be a good idea for any kettle being put to practical use and would be another guard against developing holes.
Love the way the pot just “floats” and spins in the outro! That’s something I’ve never seen on other restoration videos. Great idea!
Now you can make yourself a nice cup of tea after all that hard work. You deserve it!

Let me first say wow!! What a beautiful copper kettle. I may have been part of the "patina brigade" as another commentor mentioned, but changed my mind once I saw what you restored it to. I love patina on copper, but not when it's on a kettle you drink water out of.

I love these kinds of restorations. A bit of finagling was needed, like the makeshift anvil, but it gives heart to anyone attempting such a job without a fully equipped engineering shop. As always, the majority of the hard work was at the prep stage, where great care was taken. Many thanks.

I noticed that the “Patina Brigade “ didn’t like your work, however I have been restoring things for a few years now and resale of an item rusted or covered in “patina” differs very little, if at all in resale value.
I personally like a clean restoration like you have done as it shows respect to the item and enabling it to be used for another few generations.
Let’s face it, who would make a cup of tea in that kettle before you restored it?

I love your orange mallet. It reminds me of a little yellow hammer my baby brother had. He was just learning to pull himself up to standing, while holding tight to the playpen rail. I took one of his crib sheets that was in the laundry basket, put it over my head like a ghost, snuck up to his playpen while he was standing & said, "Boo!" Without batting an eye, he proceeded to hit be over the head with his tiny, yellow, plastic hammer... Like, "Phff! Ain't no ghost making me scared!"

Beautiful job. I love it. I love antiques. I resfored an old dresser & it was an amazing feeling & site. Old things are made of stronger materials, kind of like the old "steel" cars compared to the "cardboard & plastic" cars of today. 👍😁
The "cardboard and plastic" cars are made to go crunch and absorb impact so that the passengers don't. O.o

I'm in way better shape if I get into an accident in the 78 over the 2017. Those steel bodies aren't as flimsy.

Well, you can't preserve it, but it should be possible to take a flake in to the hardware store and color-match some paint.

As for the "patina brigade".... I do think that some RARE or exceptional pieces suffer from a reduction in value if their age-generated patina is removed. But most old, corroded items are much better served with the restoration that you have done -- bringing them back to their original, utilitarian beauty and function.

True, I like patina as much as the next but patina on a 500 yr old weathervane is not the same as this level of crust on a kettle that is relatively new.

I like the simple, everyday objects best sometimes. Things that you just know were part of a family’s life for ages before they got in the shape they’re in. They tell stories better than the unusual objects sometimes.

The corrosion is so beautiful I’d rather just cover it in a thick layer of clear epoxy or ofhe resin.

Turquoise is a gemstone, it is also just copper oxide. Malachite it also a beer pretty stone but again it's color comes from copper oxide.
